Colorful Daegu, City of Hope Daegu has long been a time honored city of the southeastern Yeongnam area where the upright sprit of Korean gentlemen continues. Daegu, a city of great potential and tradition, played a crucial role in leading the modernization effort of Korea. Now 2.6 million Daegu citizens have become one to cope with today's economic challenges and shift them into opportunity. A sprouting new hope of life in the ancient Dalgubeol
대구의 옛 이름은‘달구벌’ ,‘달구불’ ,‘달불’ . 대구라는 이름은 757년부터 쓰이기 시작했으며, 처음에는‘大丘’ 였으나 조선시대인 1778년에‘大邱’ 로 바뀌었습니다. 금호강과 신천으로 둘러싸인 기름진 들판을 중심으로 아득한 옛날부터 사람이 살기 시작하면서 찬란한 문화를 꽃피웠습니다.
Daegu was called“Dalgubeol,” “Dalgubul,”&“Dalbul,”in the past. The name Daegu started to be used from 757. It was renamed from“大丘 (Grand Hill)”to“大邱(Grand Land)”in 1778 during the Joseon Dynasty. Daegu, where people started 대구는 청동기 문화의 寶庫 북방계 청동기문화를 고유의 양식에 흡수하여 독특한 문명을 꽃피웠다. 지금도 대구의 강가나 구릉지대에서는 고대 유물이 다량 발견되고 있다.
Daegu is a treasury of the Bronze Age culture. It bloomed its unique culture, absorbing a northern Bronze Age culture and applying it to its own style. Even now, the remains of ancient times are found at riverside or hills.

A Central city of southeast Korea
신라와 고려의 역사속에서 다져온 대구의 힘은 조선시대에 접어들어 빛을 발하였으며, 1601년 경상감영이 설치되면서 비약적인 발전의 계기가 되어 오늘날 영남의 중심도시로 성장하는 기틀을 마련하게 되었습니다. 국채보상운동, 2.28학생의거 등 나라가 어려울 때 올곧은 선비정신으로 국난 극복과 조국 근대화를 주도했던 긍지 높은 인재의 고장입니다.
The potential that Daegu had built up in the Silla and Goryeo Dynasties started to be demonstrated splendidly in the Joseon Dynasty. In 1601, it attained a remarkable development with the introduction of Gyeongsang-gamyeong which paved the way for its growth into a hub of southeastern part of Korea today. Daegu is a proud hometown of talented people who spearheaded the effort to overcome the difficulties and crises of the country, like leading the movement to repay the country's debt and the Feb. 28 Students' Movement, and stood in the forefront of modernization of the country, based on the sublime and decent Confucian Gentlemen spirit.

This temple, built in the Silla Dynasty, housed the commander's room of Buddhist monk warriors during the Japanese invasion in the Joseon Dynasty. Unified Great Yaksa Buddha's Image, the largest in the world, is a tourist attraction drawing Buddhists wishing for the reunification of the country.

조선5현의 수장(首長)인 한훤당 김굉필 선생을 배향하는 서 원으로 수령400년의 고풍스런 은행나무 외에도 서원을 둘러 싸고 있는 토담이 걸작입니다.
This is a confucian academy which pays tribute to Hanhwondang Kim Goeng-pil who was the head of the Joseon 5 hyeon. Its earthen wall surrounding the auditorium is impressive, besides the 400-year-old ginkgo tree.

A Community of Azaleas
해발 1000미터 이상 고지의 약 30만평에 펼 쳐지는 전국 유일의 참꽃 군락지. 매년 4~5 월경 참꽃이 만개한 가운데 다채로운 행사와 함께 참꽃축제가 열립니다.
This is the only community of azaleas in the country on approximately 300,000 pyeong of land over 1000 meters high above the sea level. A variety of colorful events and 'full-blown community of azaleas’festivals are held in April to May every year.
