Days Out and Other Events We did it! NEPHRA is pleased to announce we are now a registered charity! We took this bold step to ensure our plans for a new building have the best chance of success. Charities are widely recognised as existing for social good. We are already recognised locally, but we hope our newly achieved charitable status will help us move forward, raise our profile and reach our goals! Charitable status can also assist with fundraising. As well as exemption from corporation tax on profits from trading undertaken for charitable provision, there is also an 80 per cent mandatory, and 20 per cent discretionary relief from business rates. In addition we can benefit from Gift Aid and other reliefs on donations from individuals, stamp duty and land tax relief on freehold property and leases acquired for charitable purposes. In the past we have lost out on certain sources of grant funding which have only been open to organisations with charitable status.

Transport NEPHRA Good Neighbours has for some time now been concerned at the lack of bus stops within parts of New Moston. If you want to travel from New Moston to the rest of the Moston ward, you’ll find yourself taking a long walk to the bus stop! Way back in 2013 when meetings were taking place about the closure of New Moston Library & Broadway baths, officers from the city council suggested we all could take a bus to the college library on the corner of Moston Lane\Rochdale Road, and the Family Fitness Centre opposite. Even then we informed officers who were handling the cutbacks, there wasn’t a bus service connecting New Moston to the rest of the Moston ward. Since that time the service has deteriorated further, in fact in order to reach facilities within our own ward, residents must now walk 16 Minutes and then sit on a bus for 14 Minutes! (Journey planned on Transport for Greater Manchester -TfGM website, 9th June 2015). Noticeably, if you are infirm or elderly, or have young children walking with you, it will take much, much longer to walk the required distance!! Residents' who are unable to walk the required 16 minutes - can no longer access a wide range of much needed services such as Barclays & Lloyds Bank both situated on Moston Lane; the Doctors Surgery at the Simpson Memorial; the Breast Screening Service at Asda Harpurhey Car Park; Podiatry at Harpurhey & Charlestown Health Centres; Out Patients at North Manchester General Hospital; North City Family & Fitness Centre; The Youth Zone on Rochdale Road; Social Services; St Dunstan’s Church & Parish Hall, the latter is where the Moston & New Moston Strategic Forum meet & St Dunstan’s AODS, not forgetting to mention a host of other churches from different faiths.. In the past NGN have spoken to our local councillors, TfGM and officers at the city council about this problem. Unfortunately, they too have had little influence in helping NGN negotiate an adequate bus service. More recently - 12th February Local Link was withdrawn from our area and Ring & Ride reduced the number of miles it would take disabled passengers to a 6 mile radius. All of which has made the situation worse! We now need your help...please drop us a line and tell us about any problems YOU may have experienced when travelling around the ward by bus or by Ring & Ride. All information will be treated in utmost confidence, but will be used anonymously to negotiate an improved bus service, and Ring & Ride, with TfGM for our area. Please send your comments to Post Bag, NEPHRA HQ, 27 Parkfield Road North, M40 3TB or by email info@nephra.org.uk. All participants will be entered into a prize draw for a £10 Morrisons shopping voucher. 6

NEPHRA’s Organic Allotment

Local Councillors NGN is proud to announce Councillor Paul Murphy OBE has been elected as the Lord Mayor of Manchester 2015/16. Paul is one of our local councillors and has always been a keen supporter of our work. Over the years Paul has played a key role ensuring officers at the city council were made aware of the important work NGN do in the community. He was instrumental in securing the funding for our drop in facility on Parkfield Road North.

Sadly in the past 18months little has change at our allotment site. Our entire growing operation has been hampered by poor management of the Building and land that used to be the Northfield Centre.

Water from a leak at the empty centre is leeching into the allotment and weeds from the land around the building are also spreading to our plot. Dena Murphy, who manages our allotment, is distressed at the amount of problems the closure of the building has caused. The city council is in the process of organising a compost toilet & portable cabin for our site, and we look forward to these being materialised - soon! In the meantime the Council have provided us with 2 portable toilets… and we remain hopeful that Dena can continue doing what she does best, which is providing delicious organic fruit and produce for local folk who regularly attend our Luncheon Club.

Do You Need Help? Drop in Advice Sessions and Surgeries are attended by Councillors Appleby and Dar on a rotational basis.

When: 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month (excluding Bank Holidays and the month of August) - 6:00pm to 6:45pm Where: NEPHRA HQ 27 Parkfield Road North, New Moston, Manchester M40

Councillor Appleby End of Term 2019

Councillor Dar End of Term 2018

Cllr Appleby serves on the Economy Scrutiny Committee

Cllr Dar is Assistant Executive Member for Neighbour Services. She also serves on the Executive Standing Consultative Panel

Don’t forget your local councillors are here to help, no problem is too big or too small. If you are unable to make one of the drop in sessions you can contact them via email or telephone - details below Town Hall contact number for both councillors is 0161 234 3235 Email: cllr.p.appleby@manchester.gov.uk or call 07908 777 691 Email: cllr.y.dar@manchester.gov.uk or call 07852 198 494 10

Can you be a friend? Here at NGN we do truly believe the saying ‘volunteers are a gift to the community’. This is because every day of the week we witness lots of volunteers making a big difference to so many people’s lives. Volunteers - who give up some of their free time to: shop, peel, chop, cook, serve, wash up, chat & have a laugh at our luncheon club - who serve tea & coffee and biscuits at our classes - who show films, make afternoon tea and open the tuck shop at our film clubs - who become a friend to some of our more isolated lonely people - who help out at events - who help set up tables & gazebos at our fundraising events who plant flowers in communal areas - who plant vegetables, weed and mow the lawn at our allotment etc etc….the list is endless! So this Summer if you have time on your hands, don’t stay indoors and be miserable… promise yourself you will get involved in something in your community. We have lots of volunteering opportunities, just waiting for you!
