WELCOME TO 7 SPRINGS

7 Springs This 230-acre property is located in Westchester, New York, and was acquired by the Trump Organization in 1996. The mansion itself was built in 1919 by Eugene Meyer, who was publisher of the Washington Post and a chairman of the Federal Reserve. Artisans from Italy were hired to make sure the 60 rooms and15 bedrooms were opulently designed. The mansion is 50,000 square feet, has three pools, carriage houses, and is surrounded by nature preserves. H.J. Heinz of Heinz Ketchup, who was a friend of Meyer’s, built a Tudor-style home on the property, also in 1919. Today, Seven Springs is used as a retreat for the Trump family.

History The main house was built and completed in 1919 by Eugene Isaac Meyer and his wife, Agnes. This Charles A. Platt design was inspired by a French chateau the Meyers had admired in France. It is said to have taken nearly 5 years and 500 Italian masons, craftsmen and Artisans from around the world to ensure that the house was opulently designed and meticulously built. The stone, with which the main house was built, was quarried directly from Armonk. A small quarry once existed in the town of North Castle, about a mile northeast of Silver Lake, and was known as the Collins Quarry. Production was restricted to local needs only and closed shortly after the Meyer house was completed in the early 1900’s. Eugene Meyer was an American financier, public official and publisher of The Washington Post from 1933 to 1946. Mr. Meyer served as Chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1930 to 1933 and was named the first President of the World Bank Group in 1946. The Washington Post remained in his family throughout the 20th century. His daughter, Katharine Graham, led the Washington Post from 1963 to 1991. She was the first 20th century female publisher of a major American newspaper. Her memoir, ‘Personal History’, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1998. Photographs of their home and life on Seven Springs can be found in her book.

The Main House

The Meyer’s main house is 32,831 square feet, has three swimming pools, 2 fountains, 3 kitchens including a walk-in safe, multiple stone fireplaces, an elevator and 18 bedrooms. The first floor flows impeccably for entertaining and includes a banquet dining room, formal living room, a winter garden room, a morning room, a study, an original wood crafted library and crystal chandeliers throughout.

The interior retains the architectural grandeur of the marble floors, stone staircases and handforged iron railings - some of which shroud the initials, “E.M.”. An orangery, originally built to protect fruit trees during winter, still stands majestically adjacent to the main exterior swimming pool and is adorned with custom mirrors and chandeliers over its marble floor. The indoor swimming pool can also be found on the first floor off a private wing of the home. A private, hidden, marble staircase leads directly from the master bedroom to the indoor pool. The pool is surrounded by fine white marble from which the custom radiators were carefully carved. A wine cellar is located on the lowest level of the home where a bowling alley once provided hours of entertainment for the Meyer family.

The property has staff and guest cottages, barns, stables, carriage houses, root cellars and garages and is surrounded by nature preserves, wooded hiking trails, a pond, streams and springs. Multiple, vast, flat, grassed fields provide lush green ambiance as well as safe footing for equestrians. The Bedford Riding Lanes Association maintains more than 100 linear miles of historic horseback riding and hiking trails, which run along the fringe of the estate and are easily accessible. A Guardhouse protects access to the long, winding, driveway leading to the circular entranceway to the main house. A stone water tower peeks over the tree -tops at the highest point on the property. The main house has a hidden parking lot for staff and drivers as well as a 150-kilowatt generator with an automatic transfer switch.

When Mrs. Meyer passed away in 1970, in accordance with her will, she left the Seven Springs Estate to Yale University. Yale gained possession in 1973 and as the “Seven Springs Farm Center” it became a conference center and place of study. In 1995 the property was purchased by the Trump family.
