Shopping experience Truro has an eclectic mix of well-known high street names and independent, specialist shops. Pydar Mews is the place to go if you’re looking for unusual gifts and jewellery whilst the shops around Victoria Square and Little Castle Street sell original clothing and homeware. Truro’s two undercover markets house a multitude of innovative small businesses. The Pannier Market, off Lemon Quay, has over 40 stalls selling handcrafted gifts and a wide range of local produce whilst Lemon Street Market has a gallery and café as well as an artisan bakery and a speciality Cornish food shop. There is a Flea Market in City Hall; and on Wednesdays and Saturdays, the Farmers’ Market sets up on Lemon Quay, showcasing fantastic Cornish food.

No visit to Truro is complete without taking in the magnificence of the cathedral, with its three soaring spires forming an iconic part of the city’s skyline. Standing serenely amid the bustle of the city centre, the cathedral holds daily services throughout the week and offers guided tours

The Drummer In June 2011, on Lemon Quay, Queen drummer Roger Taylor, who grew up in Truro and still has a home in Cornwall, unveiled the city’s newest piece of art. Standing 15ft tall and weighing two-and-a-half tonnes, the Tim Shaw designed sculpture was created as a symbol and celebration of Cornish culture. Shaw described his adopted county, Cornwall, as a place whose drum beats differently to anywhere else. He said of the sculpture: The ball on which the figure balances relates to the sea, earth and the bright moon that shines across expansive night skies. The decision to use the ball was inspired by the quay’s circular paving design, which refers to the tidal water beneath it. The ball suggests both a sea buoy and the globe across which a great many Cornish people migrated to find work.”

Royal Cornwall Museum

If you want to see a real life unwrapped Egyptian mummy, beautiful Bronze Age gold jewellery or some 2,000 year old Roman pottery, then head for the Royal Cornwall Museum. There is a diverse range of displays from Cornish history and archaeology, the Rashleigh collection of minerals and over 60,000 botanical and zoological specimens. The museum

also hosts some fine art by renowned Cornish artists of the St Ives and Newlyn schools plus works by other artists such as Constable, Turner and Gainsborough. Truro’s Victoria Gardens were created to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1898. Hidden amongst the exotic shrubs, flowers and trees are waterfalls, picnic areas and playgrounds. The band stand plays host to a brass band on Sunday afternoons during the summer months. Sports fans will love Boscawen Park with its eight tennis courts, three football pitches and a cricket pitch. There is also a large play area for children consisting of climbing frames, trails, swings and slides. In the summer months visit Daubuz Moors for guided tours and walks. The city of Truro is located at the confluence of the rivers Kenwyn and Allen which join to form the Truro River at the Town Quay and then later the Fal River which leads to the sea. It is this inland position at the head of the river that made Truro one of the key ports in Cornwall from the 14th century onwards and despite a decline in size and trade the port is still active. Today however leisure

is the main activity on the Fal River and each year thousands of visitors flock to explore what is now Cornwall’s most popular visitor destination. Regular boat services depart from Truro to a number of locations on the river including Trelissick Gardens (NT), Smugglers Cottage, Falmouth & St Mawes. Cafe culture Although the larger franchised coffee shops can be found in Truro it is worth looking out for the smaller, independent businesses dotted throughout the city. Step back in time and try Charlotte’s Tea House where you’ll be greeted by chandeliers and Victorian tranquillity. Charlotte’s sells tea from the nearby Tregothnan Estate – the first ever tea grown in the

UK. If you fancy a latte whilst enjoying fine art pieces, be sure to visit the Gallery Café in Lemon Street Market. Try something new on Kenwyn Street at 108 Coffee Shop which introduced contemporary brewing methods and an ever-changing coffee range to Truro without forgetting the mainstay of a good coffee shop, delicious homemade cakes (and free Wi-Fi)!

Clean city/ Truro in Bloom Truro is proud of the many awards gracing the trophy cabinet for its outside spaces, as the city is a regular entrant in the South West in Bloom contest. The competition aims to find the most attractive towns and cities; and businesses in Truro are encouraged to give backing to colourful hanging basket and bedding displays. Truro has even represented the South West on two occasions in the national finals of the contest. In 2011 the city was also awarded the coveted Gold award in the cities category of the Clean Britain Awards promoted by the British Cleaning Council.

History and Heritage Cornwallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s capital city has a fascinating past. Steeped in history, Truro made its mark on the map in medieval times gaining prosperity as a leading Stannary town producing and shipping out locally produced tin and copper. The (then) town attracted wealthy inhabitants who built fine houses, and elegant examples of Georgian architecture can still be seen here today. The once bustling port was originally situated where Victoria Square is today, moving to Lemon Quay (named after the leading merchants, the Lemon family) before relocating to Boscawen Park where it remains. In 1877 Queen Victoria granted city status and to this day Truro remains the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only city, continuing to flourish into the 21st Century as the lively administrative and retail centre of Cornwall.

Events/Festivals Throughout the year Truro enjoys a range of different events and festivals showcasing the diversity and artistic talent that can be found within Cornwall. Autumn is the busiest festival season and a fantastic time to visit. Autumn events include Truro City Carnival celebrating the city’s heritage and people with a lively street festival, and the 3-day Cornwall Food & Drink Festival celebrating Cornish produce with live performances, exhibitors and plenty of opportunity to taste

Skinner’s local delights! In November The City of Lights illuminates Truro with a dazzling procession of tissue lanterns floating through the streets. Youth groups, professional artists and local schoolchildren carry the lanterns and during the evening Christmas lights are turned on making for a magical ambience. Spring kicks off the festival calendar with Art in the City, drawing together artsbased organisations to celebrate local artists and galleries, and offering a variety of workshops to the public.

Truro is home to the unmissable Skinner’s Brewery. Tours are run for groups or individuals during the afternoon and evenings Monday to Friday, from Easter until October. The brewery itself is just a short walk from the main shopping area. During the tour you can relax in the atmospheric visitors centre whilst sampling Skinner’s award winning range of famous Cornish caskconditioned ales. Each brew is named after characters from Cornish folklore and one to look out for is Betty Stogs, which has won more awards nationally and locally than any other Cornish beer. If you are more of a lager fan be sure to try Skindog Cornish lager, named after the chief executive’s professional surfer son, Ben ‘Skindog’ Skinner.

Parks & Gardens While the stunning floral displays and hanging baskets are at their prime during Spring and Summer, an army of 18 green-fingered members of staff work solidly all year round to ensure the city is clean and colourful. Alongside Truro’s main open displays are the city centre’s 1,000 hanging baskets and planters. Add to this two cemeteries, four allotment sites and a number of playing fields, Truro has a significant amount of green space, much of it tucked away, for both residents and visitors to enjoy.

Boscawen Park, around a mile outside of the city centre, is Truro’s largest open space. It offers tennis courts, cricket and football pitches, a duck pond, river walk with exercise equipment and children’s play equipment. It also boasts landscaped gardens with attractive floral bedding displays.

A short walk from the city centre is Truro’s hidden gem – Victoria Gardens. In the shadow of the magnificent viaduct, they were created to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. At the centre of the gardens is a bandstand, gifted by a former Truro City Councillor, and a fountain, surrounded by beautiful landscaped gardens. The gardens host free entertainment every day during August.

The fountain at Victoria Gardens was originally stationed in Boscawen Street outside Coinage Hall, where the war memorial now stands, where it was used to chain horses. A short walk from Victoria Gardens is Waterfall Gardens near St Georges Church and Hendra Park, which is home to the hugely popular skate park.

Head of Truro’s parks department. I love looking down Tregolls Road, especially during Spring when the cherry blossom is in full bloom. I also like Furniss Island, which is a quiet spot in a very busy part of town where you can take five minutes to enjoy a sit down or a sandwich at lunchtime.”

It’s just over a mile to the Heron Inn and onwards you can walk to the beautiful village of St Clement. There is also a flat, riverside walk starting from St Clement to Tresillian of around 1.5 miles. City-based business Treasure Trails offers a guided walking route around Truro, which is great for families and is available to buy from the Tourist Information Centre.

Truro Green Walks is a project which holds organised walks for people to get together, socialise and enjoy green space. Truro is part of two national cycle routes – routes 3 and 32. Truro Green Walks: One green space I love is Furniss Island. This hidden gem of a park, nestled between Quay Street and Morlaix Avenue gets its name from Furniss biscuits whos factory once occupied the site. As well as history this little park is full of flowers, trees with swans and the occasional kingfisher to be spotted on the River Allen which flows around it. A lovely place in the heart of the city to enjoy a sandwich over lunch.”

The Real Betty Stogs Betty Stogs is an old Cornish folklore character who lived in West Cornwall near Land’s End. She was unkempt and lazy, could never mend her stockings, couldn’t knit or cook but did like a drop of ale. Due to this neglect, the ‘Small People’ took Betty’s child from her and washed the baby in the morning dew before returning it. The shock of having her baby taken turned Betty into a reformed character and model mother. Today you’ll see Betty Stogs at a range of Cornish events, played by local man Fred Thomas. You’ll see the trusty fundraising bucket always with her – over the last five years Betty has raised a colossal £30,000 for local charities.
