For Remembrance by Laurence Binyon They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Solemn the drums thrill: Death, august and royal, Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres. There is music in the midst of desolation And a glory that shines upon our tears. As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust, Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain, As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness, To the end, to the end, they remain.

The Guy Dodd Bursary Appeal To honour the passion and vision of this inspirational educator, wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend and wise counsel to countless others – we launch the Guy Dodd Bursary Appeal.
Guy Dodd was Headmaster of Truro School from 1993 – 2001. During that time Guy raised funds to establish the Truro School Endowment Fund. In 2015, former Headmaster, Andrew Gordon-Brown, approached Guy asking for his guidance and wisdom to help find a group of passionate individuals who together could form a Board of Trustees and raise funds for transformational bursaries. From their vision the Truro School Foundation was created and today over 100 children at Truro School receive bursary assistance, supported by the School and Truro School Foundation. Donations can be made online on the Truro School Foundation CAF webpage. Click here for a direct link. You may download a donation form directly from the Bursary Appeal webpage. Graham Hooper, Chairman - Truro School Foundation
It almost goes without saying that we all miss Guy a great deal, and going on the journey of conceiving and launching Guy’s Appeal has been emotional for many of us. Guy, to this day, casts a long shadow. Helen Dodd and Guy’s children and siblings have been hugely supportive and one of our main drivers was ‘to do Guy and his
family proud’…as the saying goes. We believe that it also reflects Guy’s commitment to Truro School and his vision of open accessibility to education for the widest possible community. As Helen Dodd said; “Guy believed in the potential of young people. He believed in the power of great teachers and great education to unlock that potential. And he was deeply committed to the role of Truro School in the wider community of Cornwall.” So please, if you have not already contributed, can I urge you to consider making a donation? Every single gift is important to us, no matter how large or small. Please help us to make a difference; help us to create more transformational bursaries. Sixth Form student Finn becomes World Champion windsurfer The IQFoil International Games took place from 19th-24th October in Lake Garda, Italy. One of the 118 competitors attending was Sixth Form student Finn. Finn triumphed and became the first ever U19 World Champion. The young windsurfer also won 2nd place in the U21s and 14th overall against the seniors. Finn said: “It was an amazing event with some intense and exciting racing, I’m very happy to be the best in my age category but more excited for my progress in the senior fleet as I’m getting closer to my end goal of winning a medal at the Olympics.” Director of Sport, Mr Sanderson added: “What a fantastic way to start the new half term, welcoming a new world champion back to Truro School. Finn has achieved something remarkable and we are extremely proud to have him with us at Truro School. To win the U19s, place 2nd in the U21s and to compete strongly in the seniors shows what an incredible talent Finn has. We wish him continued success and he deserves everything he achieves, as Finn works incredibly hard to attain such a high standard.” The IQFoil is a new windsurf product design that has recently won the campaign to be the official equipment used in the Paris Olympics 2024. Thanks to Ian Gallehawk CO77 who found this photo of Treliske Prep School on eBay. We think it’s from the 1960s. Does anyone recognise themself in it? What made the young chap in the front row look away from the camera?

Responses to Keeping Connected 16 Nicholas Schulkins CO72
I see that my name was on the cross-country team list in the latest Keeping Connected, although I’m not quite sure why it was titled 1973 because Lloyd Pengilly CO72, myself, Ian Liddiard CO72, Mike Shrives CO72 and co all left in 1972. I used to hate crosscountry, but was unfortunate to be just good enough to be in the School team! Lloyd was good and much more suited in build for running than me. His father was the boss of the South Crofty Mine at the time he was at school. Here’s the motley crew. I can remember a few names on the front row. Forth from the left is Ian Liddiard, then Lloyd Pengilly, myself TRURO SCHOOL ASSOCIATION | TRURO SCHOOL FOUNDATION

and Mike Shrives. Mike is now the boss of the Royal Naval Sailing Association (RNSA) based in Gosport after a full career in the RN; I caught up with him a few years ago. I’m not in touch with Lloyd, although we were quite good chums and it would be good to know how he is if anyone can find out. I suspect he might have gone into the mining industry following his father, so perhaps he’s overseas somewhere? Nick kindly sent in further copies of photos from his time at School. Does anyone recognise themself in them? 2nd XV 1971-72

In the “Where Are They Now?” section you mention missing photos of the cross country teams in the 1970’s and I have attached a copy of the photo of the 1971 team. I cannot recall all the names but I believe those sitting are; Nick Schulkins CO72, myself, Pengilly?, Dick Stockley CO71, Tim Hicks CO71 and Tony Cheshire CO71. I hope this helps fill the gap in your collection!

Keeping Connected NOVEMBER 2020: VIEW FROM THE CHAMBER
View from the Chamber I can’t believe we will soon be celebrating Christmas and the start of a new year. Like most of you I’m sure, I just don’t know where the year has gone – it’s been a right off! At Cornwall Chamber, we all breathed a sigh of relief at the beginning of November when the furlough extension was announced. I was desperately worried about the impact on Cornish businesses if the extension was not given. Sadly though, the good news came with the caveat of a second lockdown, which is affecting some businesses far more catastrophically than the furlough withdrawal would have done. The businesses I am referring to are the independents who don’t sell food or essentials and therefore cannot remain open over lockdown. These shops are missing out on the biggest revenue boost of the year that
they rely upon so heavily. In a world where we can order a Christmas present online cheaper than anywhere locally, to be delivered free to our door within a few days, there is little incentive to use local independents who might take a couple of weeks to make an item and have to charge £4 postage to get it to you. However, by shopping with independents you are not only supporting their families and
TRURO SCHOOL ASSOCIATION | TRURO SCHOOL FOUNDATION
Keeping Connected NOVEMBER 2020: VIEW FROM THE CHAMBER
livelihoods, you are giving money to a company that is putting it straight back into Cornwall, creating jobs, sustaining businesses, and helping the Duchy thrive. Many independents source their materials locally creating a domino effect of businesses supporting businesses and keeping the Cornish economy buoyant. In the run up to Christmas the Cornish are doing what they do so well; rallying to set up various selling platforms and online markets to make it as easy as possible for us to source presents and Christmas supplies locally. A new Facebook group, ‘Cornwall Christmas Buy Local – Nadelik Lowen’ has 12,000 followers already (probably double by the time you read this) and is
a hive of activity with people posting their requirements for Christmas and local sellers responding with details of their products. Last weekend, the Etsy Makers Cornwall organisation took its Makers event online. The website is still live and it’s extremely easy to search for a category and find a local seller that makes the product you need. Sourcing a product locally is not something that comes naturally to many of us, but the message this year is clear; before asking Amazon, see if you can find what you need from a local seller, and help our Cornish businesses get through this critical time. Choose Cornish wherever possible and keep your money in your pocket until 2nd December when local businesses will be open – or seek out Click & Collect from local independent businesses now! Keeping Connected NOVEMBER 2020: MARIA’S RECIPE
Baked Camembert with Christmas Wreath Method Preheat oven to 190°. Grease and flour a baking sheet. Put the flour and salt in a bowl and mix. Rub in the butter to resemble fine breadcrumbs.
Ingredients (serves 4) 300g strong bread flour ½ tsp salt 1 packet yeast 25g butter 150-200ml warm water 100g walnuts, chopped 70g dried apricots, chopped 50g dried cranberries 1 camembert (young if possible) Egg to glaze
Stir in the yeast and then gradually add the water and mix it in with a knife until a soft dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 10-15 mins until the dough is soft, smooth and elastic. Add in the walnuts, apricots and cranberries, the dough will become a bit sticky now. Place the camembert in the middle of the prepared tray in just the paper wrapping

(peel away the plastic layer and discard). Then roll the bread dough out into a sausage long enough to wrap around the camembert and seal the two ends together by pinching. Lightly cover the wreath with cling film and leave in a warm area of the kitchen to prove. Once the dough has doubled in size, glaze it with the egg wash then slash it or cut through to form the ‘leaves’. Bake it in the oven for about 30mins until it has cooked through and has a nice golden brown colour and the camembert is very soft and liquid.
For all mince pie fans! As an extra Christmas treat from Maria to Old Truronians, you can now have a go at baking Maria’s special mince pies. Her delicious mince pie meat is even available to buy on the Cookery School website. Special recipe link: www.truroschool.com/ oldtruronians/mariasrecipe
