Celebrating our 50 UK foodbank! Llanelli’s foodbank launch sparked major celebrations at The Trussell Trust recently as the goal of 50 UK foodbanks was reached ahead of our 2010 target. Every new foodbank launched means that more and more people in crisis receive the emergency food that they need to get back on their feet. A simple gift of food and support really does transform lives - lives of people like Jamie... 50 is a landmark for the foodbank network but there are thousands of UK towns and cities without foodbanks so there is a long way to go. Our vision is for every UK town to have a foodbank. Growing new foodbanks is so important, especially as recession continues to bite, but it is really stretching our resources. We hardly ever see Jeremy, our very busy foodbank network manager, as he speeds around the UK setting up new foodbanks. To keep on helping local people to feed those in crisis in their communities we urgently need more resources... If you can help please get in touch.

New Bulgaria Film launched – Sean walks! – Chris completes 5 at 50 - Join Trek Bulgaria

Snapshots...

‘Any and Mimi put you in the Picture...’ There’s excitement in the air at the Trust as we unveil our new Bulgaria film made by award-winning former BBC TV producer Derek Butler. Tackling issues such as Roma poverty, human trafficking, abandonment and prostitution, ‘Any and Mimi put you in the Picture’ gives an insight into the realities of life for Bulgaria’s poor as well as showing how The House of Opportunity Programme brings hope for brighter futures. We asked Mimi, our 22-year-old Bulgarian Projects Assistant who narrates the film, what it was like to make and what she thinks of the final piece: ‘Making the film was very exciting, I’d never done anything like it before. Derek was amazing – he initially came to Bulgaria to see what the situation was like and was so moved that we ended up making the whole film there and then! The finished film is great, in just 17 minutes Derek has captured the essence of the problem in Bulgaria and what The Trussell Trust is doing to help. The film also captures my reaction to seeing large scale poverty in Bulgaria. I had never been to such a large Roma community before, so visiting Stara Zagora Roma Community really shocked me. The film shows what is really happening behind the scenes in Bulgaria. I hope it will move people’s hearts and make them want to make a difference in whatever way they can.’ To see the film or order a copy to show at a school, business, dinner or fundraising event call 01722 411244 or email richard.parsons@trusselltrust.org

Young mother saved from TB thanks to new Roma community health outreach programme Too poor to see a doctor, Smilena, a 28-yearold Roma mother of two appeared to be eight months pregnant and had not had any medical check-ups at all. World Without Borders, a Roma NGO part-funded by the Trust, had just set up a health clinic offering all pregnant mothers free medical check-ups in Stara Zagora, one of Bulgaria’s biggest Roma shanty towns. At Smilena’s check up the doctor could not detect the baby’s heartbeat. Worried by this he urgently took Smilena to hospital for an ultrasound and discovered that she was not

pregnant at all but suffering from tuberculosis hydroperitoneum. Thanks to this check-up Smilena spent two months in a tuberculosis clinic and is now being successfully treated. ‘World Without Borders’ (WWB) is a small Roma NGO working to provide essential healthcare, family planning advice and sex education to Stara Zagora Roma Community. Many of WWB’s workers like Toni (left) grew up in the Roma community and are determined to help improve conditions there, giving the next generation a better future.

We urgently need your help to continue meeting people at their point of need... Could you donate the cost of a coffee, cake or pint each month to help transform the lives of people like Jamie and Smilena?

Chris beats lashing rain and howling gales to finish challenge of a lifetime A huge round of applause to Trussell Trust Director Chris Mould for completing his 5 at 50 Challenge! Back in May Chris embarked on an extraordinary venture: to complete 5 runs, ranging from a 5k fun run to a Lake District Mountain Run, before reaching his 51st birthday in a bid to raise £50,000 for The Trussell Trust. Thanks to sheer determination, a network of support, a great deal of prayer and the encouragement of fellow runner Mark Elling, Chris overcame injury, ran over 100km and reached his goal. In the final and toughest challenge, Chris battled driving rain and howling gales to run up and down several Lake District peaks. Fortunately, Chris has done all the hard work so you don’t have to! All we’re asking is that you would sponsor Chris to help him to reach his fundraising target of £50,000 and make all his battles with the elements and injuries worthwhile.

ReStore revolutionises thinking on charity shops, now everyone wants one! Following our Salisbury charity shop ReStore’s success winning ‘UK Shop Team of the Year’ calls have been coming in from churches and charities keen to see more ReStore’s reaching out to communities across the country. People are catching our vision for a new kind of charity shop where everyone is welcome and anyone can help. ReStore won the prestigious award in July because it has a policy of including people even when that means staff spending extra time with a disabled volunteer or taking the time to talk to a customer in crisis. Our volunteer Sean is a great testament to the difference it makes to give people a chance. Sean helps with our online books project and joined us in a wheelchair a year ago. Sean had not walked for 12 years and could barely talk. In the last few weeks Sean has started walking with sticks from the Amazon office to the lunch room as well as talking more. He says ‘Working at the Trust inspired me to get off my backside! It has broadened my horizons, taught me how to be unselfish and showed me that I can be part of something.’

Sean walks!

Welsh foodbanks empower youth to change the future Foodbanks in Wales have been given £10,000 from the Welsh Assembly to launch a new youth volunteering programme, providing 50 placements for 16-25 year olds. The scheme aims to involve young people in combating local poverty and to promote inclusion. 50% of the places will go to marginalised or disabled young people. The project will be led by young people in partnership with our Welsh Foodbank Development Manager.

In January The Trussell Trust will open a further three ReStore charity shops in the Dorset area, helping to generate funds for our rapidly expanding projects as well as providing more opportunities for supported volunteers and creating more places where people in crisis can talk to someone who cares.

‘I love ReCreate, I look forward to it each week...’ Every Thursday at 2pm ReStore Salisbury becomes a hive of bead-making activity as people from all walks of life join us for ReCreate, a free bead-jewellery workshop. Launched in partnership with local police, Kim and Gemma explain that ‘the idea is to reach out to different strands of diversity – ranging from people with disabilities through to ethnic minority groups. It’s open to anyone and everyone and helps people who often feel excluded to know that they are worth something.’ The class is already a success. Claire (right) one of our supported volunteers and a ReCreate regular, told us that ReCreate has ‘taught me that I can succeed. It makes me proud of what I can do.’ For more information call 01722 427111
