HELPING PEOPLE LEARN TO LAUGH AGAIN

‘I often work with volunteers who are in very difficult situations: people with long term illness, family breakdown, mental illness and bereavement. Seeing these volunteers begin to regain a sense of purpose, feel valued and start to laugh again is an incredible privilege. It’s amazing to see a lady who has spent years in an abusive, lonely marriage cry with laughter amongst friends.’

FOODBANKS TRANSFORM CHRISTMAS FOR FAMILIES

Amber, Sara and Krystyna, three volunteers from our Dorset shops, have successfully applied for part-time shop positions. As well as raising funds, our community shops continue to give volunteers of all backgrounds the opportunity to realise their full potential.

NEW UK FOODBANK OPENING EVERY WEEK! Over 150 foodbanks nationwide

Since January 2011 we’ve launched more than one foodbank a week! As the financial crisis continues, demand for foodbanks is growing. Recently we launched our first Northern Irish foodbank in Newtownards and our first foodbank in north Wales. We desperately want to meet the increasing need but to do this we urgently need more funds... Can you help? >> Fill out the response form inside, thanks!

POLICE TAKE DESPERATE SHOPLIFTER TO FOODBANK Adam had not eaten for four days when he resorted to stealing bread and eggs. After experiencing 23 days benefit delay Adam had tried begging for food and was desperate. Arrested by plain clothes officers, he was distraught at having got into trouble with the authorities. Fortunately, the police officers were so moved by his plight that they took him to Islington Foodbank. Adam cried with gratitude when he saw the bags of food and the police were so impressed that they asked to become foodbank voucher holders.

AGED 19 AND NEVER BEEN TAUGHT TO READ OR WRITE... Orphanage leavers Niki,19, and Marian, 23, joined our House of Opportunity in Botevgrad unable to read, write, calculate or even recognise money. Neither has learning difficulties, they simply hadn’t been taught.

Niki and Marian are both very hardworking and hope to get good jobs

The problem was discovered when the boys were given a football shirt by the House of Opportunity’s centre manager and they couldn’t read the numbers on the back. Niki says that his teacher asked him to go to sleep in class because he was less trouble like that. As a result both Marian and

Meanwhile, houseparent and former teacher Veneta has begun devoted work on improving their literacy. Thanks to the House of Opportunity programme, Niki and Marian now have the chance to overcome their neglect and build successful futures, but their story highlights the urgent need for more houses right across Bulgaria.
