Auction Night Information 3

Auction Night Information Thank you for following The Barons’ Charter Trails in Salisbury and Lincoln this summer. Now it is your chance to own one of these unique, one-off decorated Barons on Thursday 1st October 2015. Two auctions will take place simultaneously, one in Salisbury and one in Lincoln, and both will commence with a drinks and canapés reception at 6.30pm. They are both ticketed events and will be held at:

The Salisbury Auction

The Lincoln Auction

inside Salisbury Cathedral

The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel on the Brayford Waterfront

Bidding for Barons! On the night you will be able to bid for a Baron at either location and this catalogue sets out the lots in the order they are due to go under the hammer. We will endeavour to keep the two auctions running simultaneously so that Lot S1 in Salisbury will be auctioned at approximately the same time as Lot L1 in Lincoln. If you’d like to bid for a Baron in ‘the other city’, it will be explained on the night how to do a telephone bid.

Pre-bid forms – you can place a bid on any of the barons before the auctions by visiting www.thebaronscharter.org.uk. You will be required to fill in a pre-bid form stating the amount you wish to bid. Buying a plinth – if you become the proud owner of one of the Barons and plan on siting it outside, you may wish to buy the concrete plinth to accompany it. Please enquire about this on the night. Collection and delivery of barons and plinths are the buyers responsibility and cost.

Good luck and please dig deep – these one-off pieces of art have been crafted with love and will raise funds for a very good cause.

4 Introduction

Introduction to The Barons’ Charter This summer, The Trussell Trust launched The Barons’ Charter 2015 to celebrate the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta and to help raise funds for the charity. Working together with Wild in Art and Lincoln BIG, unique art trails were created in Salisbury and Lincoln, each displaying 25 life-sized individually decorated, medieval Baron Sculptures for all to enjoy. A vivid and vibrant parade of superb creative talent was displayed in each city. The Barons were expertly decorated by local and regional artists and community groups, and kindly sponsored by a variety of businesses, organisations and individuals. You will have seen the Barons on the streets of Salisbury and Lincoln for over 12 weeks, bringing colour and happiness to thousands and increasing footfall and tourism to both cities. This is the biggest project The Trussell Trust has ever undertaken and we are delighted at how successful it has been. However none of this would have been possible without the support of so many people - logistics, design work, photography, media and venues facilitating the auctions. The list is endless. Thank you all! The auction night is when all the hard work is realised and I hope you will dig deep to raise a significant amount of money to help The Trussell Trust continue its valuable work.

About Our Charity 5

The Barons’ Charter 2015

About Our Charity The Trussell Trust The Trussell Trust runs the largest network of foodbanks in the UK, helping communities work together to stop UK hunger.

“...it’s been a rocky ride, but the foodbank has helped me through it.”

Thirteen million people in the UK live below the poverty line, with people going hungry every day for a range of reasons, from benefit delays to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. In 2014/15, the Trussell Trust’s 400-strong network of foodbanks made 1,084,604 emergency food interventions, providing a minimum of three days’ emergency food and other support to people in crisis.

Jay

The Trussell Trust’s More Than Food programme is encouraging foodbanks to extend the help offered to clients, in order to address the underlying cause of their crisis and help them break the cycle of poverty. Working in partnership with existing advisory agencies, foodbanks will act as community hubs, providing people with emergency food and support, all in one location. Money raised from the Barons’ auctions in Salisbury and Lincoln will go to The Trussell Trust supporting their work to stop UK hunger. Like Magna Carta, The Trussell Trust aims to promote social justice for all whilst combating poverty and exclusion. Find out more at www.trusselltrust.org

6 Lincoln BIG and Visit Lincoln

The Barons’ Charter 2015

Lincoln BIG and Visit Lincoln The Lincoln Barons’ Charter Trail is a Wild in Art event brought to Lincoln by The Trussell Trust and Lincoln BIG, and has been part of our contribution to the celebration of Magna Carta 800 in Lincoln. We’re delighted the Trail has been such a success, and has been enjoyed by thousands of locals and visitors to the city. Lincoln BIG is delighted to support The Trussell Trust in this project and we hope significant funds are raised at the auction to help the vital work of this national charity, a proportion of which will support Trussell Trust foodbanks in Lincolnshire. The Lincoln Business Improvement Group (Lincoln BIG) and its sister organisation Visit Lincoln aim to put Lincoln on the map as a retail and tourist destination, and improve the experience of the city centre in Lincoln for those who visit, live and work there. During the last five years Lincoln BIG’s total investment in Lincoln City Centre has amounted to £7 million, underwritten though a levy on commercial property rates agreed by city centre businesses. Our philosophy is simple, if the city centre is clean, bright and welcoming with lots of activity and events taking place, then more people will visit, and when they do visit they will stay longer! Our work also ensures that that the City Centre is a great place in which to operate a business and a better environment for staff to work in.

Magna Carta Cities and Wild in Art 7

Magna Carta Cities Magna Carta is one of the world’s most influential documents – an agreement in 1215 between King John and 25 Barons as a practical solution to a political crisis, which in the centuries since has become a potent symbol of liberty and the rule of law. The cathedral cities of Salisbury and Lincoln are proud to house original copies of the 1215 Magna Carta. Only four surviving copies exist, the other two are in the national collection at the British Library. This summer, The Trussell Trust together with Lincoln BIG celebrated the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta through unique art trails in Salisbury and Lincoln, each displaying 25 individually decorated medieval Barons for all to enjoy.

Wild in Art Congratulations to The Trussell Trust, Lincoln BIG, and all the sponsors and artists who have worked together to bring history to life in Salisbury and Lincoln through two unique art trails. Designed and created by Wild in Art’s Creative Director Chris Wilkinson, the Barons have proved to be the perfect canvas through which to unite visual art and the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta. Wild in Art is the leading creative producer of mass-appeal public art events and since 2007, our events have been enjoyed by millions of people worldwide. We are delighted that the Barons have captured the imagination of both cities and we hope they will raise significant funds at auction for The Trussell Trust. Find out more at www.wildinart.co.uk
