History The pastor, trustees, and church members of Midway Baptist Church founded Midway Baptist Schools in the fall of 1977. Midway Baptist Schools opened that year as a full kindergarten through 12th grade serving mostly church families. As the school grew, it became a ministry to the larger community. In 2010, the members of Midway Baptist Church voted to change the name from Midway Baptist Church to Ocean View Church. In light of this change, Midway Baptist Schools became Ocean View Christian Academy.

School Facts The Patriot is the school mascot. The school colors are red, white, and navy blue. 1

Campus Hours School begins each day at 8:00am and concludes at 2:35pm for elementary, and 2:45pm for secondary school. Students are not monitored on campus prior to 7:45am, nor after 3:00pm, and are to vacate the property unless they are directly supervised by an OVCA staff member. The school is not responsible for students who are on campus outside of these stated hours. Before and after-school care is available for K-8 students at an additional cost. Once students have been dropped off at our campus, they are not allowed to leave campus during the school day unless a parent or guardian has signed them out in the school office.

Chapel All students attend chapel regularly. Chapel participation is required for all students.

Curriculum OVCA offers biblically-based curriculum from preschool through 12th grade. At the secondary level, we also utilize additional curriculum resources for science and math. Our versatile programs of study make it possible for us to offer both honors and advanced placement courses in 9th-12th grades.

School Personnel OVCA is a part of Ocean View Church and is one of the ministries of that church. The pastor, as the leader of all church ministries, is the superintendent of the school, the church trustees, and the school board. The principal, or chief administrator, is accountable to the superintendent, the school board, and all stakeholders in order to organize the program and oversee the school’s day-to-day activities in a manner that aligns with our foundational statements. The ultimate goal is to help students make progress on our school-wide goals, improve achievement in all foundational areas, and be prepared for the calling God has for each student. The teacher works directly under the supervision of the principal and administration. The teacher is responsible to effectively communicate and biblically integrate the subject matter of the class. The teacher is to serve as a model of Christ-like living, as well as teach good citizenship and respect for our American heritage. The teacher will maintain effective classroom discipline in accordance with the philosophy of Ocean View Christian Academy. A teacher is one who communicates truth to learners; therefore, teachers in a Christian school must personally know the truth and live the truth so that they can honestly present the truth to students. God uses the examples of teachers and parents as a living curriculum in the lives of students.

FOUNDATIONAL STATEMENTS Philosophy Statement At OVCA, we believe that every realm of life belongs to God, and there is nothing outside His jurisdiction. ”For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.” (Romans 11:36, NKJV). There 2

fore, in every area, we seek to align ourselves with God’s purpose as taught in His Word. It is our goal to follow the instruction given in Colossians 3:17: “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” Ocean View Christian Academy provides a setting where students can thrive spiritually, academically, socially, and physically. Spiritually, students can thrive at OVCA because we seek to build up the believer and present the good news of Jesus Christ to the unbeliever. We systematically instruct our students in the Word (the Bible) so they will come to know God and then grow in Christ and in fellowship with other believers. Our prayer for every believer at OVCA is like the Apostle Paul’s in Colossians 1:9-12, which begins by asking that the Colossians “would be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.” Our school is a place where we teach students to live with our heavenly future in mind. Philippians 3:20-21 reminds us: “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.” Academically, we provide an atmosphere where God-given gifts are nurtured, excellence and self-discipline are cultivated, and future goals are nourished. We view academic studies and professional preparation as privileges granted to us by God, who, according to I Timothy 6:17, “gives us richly all things to enjoy.” In response, we foster a love of learning and enthusiasm for subjects such as literature, writing, history, science, math, and the arts. We also promote student interest and independence in the belief that internal motivation to work hard will serve students throughout their lives. We support our students as they learn to make the most of the opportunities God has given. In our curriculum program, student mastery of essential knowledge and skills is foundational as we provide opportunities for students to grow into clear, creative thinkers. Our faculty recognizes fluent speech and writing as expressions of clear thinking. They inspire students to deepen their thinking through wide reading and experience. Furthermore, since by Christ “all things were created” (Colossians 1:16), our instruction is framed by a Christian worldview. Although we do want our students to take joy in the gift of academics, mature into disciplined scholars, and prepare for fulfilling career opportunities, there is more. Ultimately, we want our students to recognize God’s plan and His sovereignty in all things. Socially, students will grow at our school because we teach them that spiritual growth is revealed in their relationships with one another and in the respect they exhibit toward others. We show them how to be “tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32). And we demonstrate how we “keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3). We also teach our students to treasure home and church families, and to be responsible for their own behavior. Furthermore, we equip them with a biblical, confident approach to the unbelieving world. In view of that, our instruction guides students to become articulate and form strong views on social issues. We urge them to act on those views by embracing their roles as God-honoring citizens of their countries. Physically, we prepare our students to live productive Christian lives by teaching them that they do not belong to themselves, but to God. We instruct students that God desires for them to glorify Him in body and spirit (I Corinthians 6:20). This means students will understand that their physical choices impact their total wellbeing. Therefore, our program is designed to foster a healthy lifestyle that leads to longevity and improved quality of life. In order to provide an environment where our students can thrive spiritually, academically, socially, and physically, our faculty and staff are examples to the students—they are maturing believers with a growing grasp of God’s Word; they have a passion for learning; they display the fruit of the Spirit in their relationships with others (Galatians 5:22-23); and they glorify God in body and spirit. Teachers at Ocean View model good communication skills, 3

both in speech and in writing. They are loving disciplinarians who understand that only God’s work can make lasting change in an individual’s life. Faculty and staff at Ocean View live out the belief that we exist to work in partnership with parents to nurture students spiritually, academically, socially, and physically. We communicate to parents the belief that they are ultimately responsible for the training and upbringing of their child, and that Ocean View is working with them. This means that in order for their child to thrive in our program, we need their full support. Their constant communication with the school and involvement in their child’s training is a must if our partnership with parents is to work. We expect that students will accept teachers’ help by working hard and responding positively to loving correction. We provide resources to ensure that students not only formulate future goals for themselves, but also work toward achieving those goals. (Bible verse quotations are from the New King James version.)

Mission Statement At OVCA our mission is to purpose the hearts and minds of the students that the Lord has entrusted to us. We seek to accomplish this, and bring glory to God, by equipping students spiritually, academically, socially, and physically.

Vision Statement Our graduates are… Purposed to live as citizens of Heaven; Primed to thrive in competitive environments; Prepared to cooperate in responsible relationships; Practiced in principles of healthy living.

School Wide Goals Our graduates are purposed to live as citizens of Heaven: they submit to God’s plan because of their knowledge of Scripture, producing the fruit of the Spirit in their lives and using their spiritual gifts to edify other believers. Our graduates are primed to thrive in competitive environments: they master core subject knowledge and are skilled in reading, writing, speaking, listening, researching, thinking, computing, and employing technology. Our graduates are prepared to cooperate in responsible relationships: they have a grasp of other cultures and viewpoints, an ability to work with others, and an understanding of how to have loving relationships with home and church families. Our graduates are practiced in principles of healthy living: they believe that their bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit and understand how to live healthy, biblically moral lives.

4

Core Values Faith: We believe in God’s Word, and in the sufficiency of what He has provided for salvation and for living the Christian life. Family: We facilitate the biblical relationships of home and church. Faculty: We expect that each staff member is a maturing believer with a growing grasp of God’s Word. Future: We help prepare students for their heavenly hope as well as for their earthly vocations.

ADMISSIONS Enrollment Our enrollment process is explained on our website under “Admissions”. Additional enrollment information is also available in the school office.

General Admissions Information As a private, Christian school, our curriculum is centered on the Word of God, the Bible. Our school standards and student expectations are also based on biblical principles. These standards are higher than expectations one would find at a public school, and include apply both off-campus and outside of the school day. We also believe that no school can be effective in its mission without parental support. Although our parents support us by paying tuition, we rely on parents to support the expectations we have for our students. We exist to glorify God by being a support to the Christian home as an alternative to publicly funded local schools, which are not governed by Biblical principles. We do ask our students to adhere to the moral standards the Bible prescribes for our time. Oftentimes this includes explaining to students what the Bible says about current, and sometimes sensitive, social issues as it applies to a particular school subject, Bible class, or topical discussion. Our objective is not to confuse or offend a student who is being taught differently at home regarding these topics, but to teach students to seek repentance and joy in living how God desires. Therefore, questions or statements made by students contrary to Biblical teachings will be addressed with a Biblical response, and must be respected by the student to ensure a positive classroom atmosphere. Criticism of a teacher’s Biblically-based statement or school policy should not be addressed in a classroom or public forum; instead, a private meeting should be requested. Occasionally, differences may exist between the position of the school and that of student or parent in regard to various issues. We do our best to discuss these matters thoroughly, reconcile with families, and guide students in the Truth of God’s Word. Certain circumstances require a student to admit failures, agree to a path to restore their relationship with God and with the school, and show personal growth. On rare occasions consensus may not be reached between the parties. In these cases, we understand that Ocean View may not the best fit for every student. It may be beneficial to the family to find an institution in which they can participate that aligns with their views.

5

Non-Discrimination Policy Ocean View Christian Academy admits students of any race or ethnic origin, and offers to them all rights, privileges, responsibilities, programs, and activities generally afforded to or made available to students at the school, provided such meet our academic entrance requirements, are aligned with our school philosophy, and agree to abide by all policies of the school. The school does not discriminate on the basis of race or ethnic origin in administration of its admission policies, educational policies, athletic program, or other school-administered programs.

ACADEMIC STANDARDS Homework/Class Assignments Assignments in each grade become more demanding every year. Students can expect a certain amount of homework/assignments on a regular basis, and they are expected to complete all work by the due date. Parents are encouraged to share in the responsibility of seeing that this work is completed, and may monitor their student’s grades using a school-provided account on HeadMaster Online. More information on HeadMaster Online is available on the school’s website. Elementary parents (K-5th) are required to sign their student’s planner nightly agreeing that they have seen the homework and their child has completed the assignment/s. In the event that a student’s homework or class assignment is late or not completed, 10% may be deducted each school day the work is overdue. Additionally, no credit may be given for late work in some cases. No credit will be given for work more than five school days overdue, or work received after the final day of a grading period. Poor performance in this area will affect a student’s grade and may warrant disciplinary action. Please review the syllabus/orientation letter for each class for specific grading policies.

Honor Roll Students at OVCA may achieve Honor Roll status at one of the following grade point average levels: 1.

4.0 Principal’s Honor Roll: 4.00 GPA or higher

2.

Principal’s Honor Roll: 3.60 – 3.99 GPA

3.

Honor Roll: 3.20 – 3.59 GPA

Valedictorian / Salutatorian Distinction is given to the top two graduates in each graduating class. Based on the following criteria, the student earning the highest grade point average (GPA) is distinguished as the valedictorian. Additionally, the student earning the second highest grade point average (GPA), based on the following criteria, is distinguished as the salutatorian.

Requirements: 1.

Must complete a minimum of four years of high school mathematics (including Advanced Math) and 6

1.

three years of high school science (including Chemistry).

2.

Must attend OVCA from the 10th—12th grade.

3.

In the event of a tie, the rigor of the students’ coursework, as well as college SAT scores, will be determining factors.

Incomplete Grades An incomplete grade, indicated by an “I” on the report card or transcript, may be given for attendance, financial, or academic reasons. In the event an “I” is given and an extension is granted, the student must contact the administration within two weeks of report cards being issued to rectify the situation. If no correction is made, no credit will be given for any missing or incomplete work, and the resulting grade will be permanent. Credit recovery by retaking the course may be necessary to correct the grade.

Interscholastic Opportunities Students are encouraged to get involved in activities that interest them. However, many of these activities are time-consuming and demanding; therefore, students desiring to participate in more than one major activity at any given time must receive approval from their parents, administration, and instructor or coach. Note: A Multi-Activity Participation Form can be picked up in the school office.

Make-up Work Students will be expected to make up all missed work. Normally, this grace period will be equal to the number of days missed (i.e., two days absent may warrant two days to make up work missed); however, the grace period should not exceed three days. If a previously announced quiz, test or project is scheduled for when a student returns to school, the student should be prepared and may only be excused if new material was introduced during the absence and is on the test or quiz.

Passing/Failing a Grade In the event students do not satisfactorily meet OVCA academic standards, they may not be promoted to the next grade level or may not receive credit for a particular course. The school principal, administration, and the teacher decide whether to allow a student to advance. Excessive absenteeism may also affect a student’s grade promotion or course credit. (Please see attendance policy.)

Probation-Academic If a student earns less than a 2.0 GPA or earned one or more failing grades (“F”) at the end of a nine-week grading period, that student will automatically be placed on academic probation. Notification in writing does not need to be given. Students and parents should utilize HeadMaster Online, verbal and email communication with teachers, progress reports, and/or report cards to track student progress and standing. Help Class or tutoring can be a valuable tool in fostering academic progress. 7

If a student on academic probation earns less than a 2.0 GPA at the end of a semester, at the discretion of the administration, they may not be invited back for the following semester. All new students are admitted on probationary status for a minimum of one semester and should maintain a 2.5 GPA.

Program of Study 1.

Credits a.

OVCA reserves the right to accept or deny credits from other schools. A minimum of 52 semester credits should be accumulated for high school graduation, as well as the required community service hours.

b. Independent studies, ACE, or non-accredited home-school coursework will be verified by completion of one year of similar OVCA course work with at least a C grade level. c. 2.

Credit may not be given for a class in which the student has been absent 15 or more days a semester.

Grades a.

Computing Grade Point Average (GPA): The grades from every class figure into the GPA for grades 7-12. Only “core” classes, such as math, language, reading, and others, figure into elementary GPA and are noted on report cards with an asterisk “*.”

b. Each semester is a unit. Points are earned as follows: A = 4 points

Excellent………………….90-100%

B = 3 points

Good…………………………80-89%

C = 2 points

Average…………………….70-79%

D = 1 point

Poor…………….…………...60-69%

F = 0 points

Failing.……………......Below 60%

3.

Honors Classes: The value for grades A to D is increased by 0.5 of a point.

4.

Advanced Placement Classes: The value for grades A to D is increased by 1.0 point.

Report Cards Report cards are issued after each quarter. Report cards for grades 7-12 are sent home or mailed to the address on file. Parents should keep their address current with the school office. Updating family contact information should be completed through HeadMaster Online or in person in the school office. Elementary report cards are sent home with the student shortly after each grading period. Grade reporting is available continuously through Headmaster Online and serves as official notice of student academic performance.

8

ATTENDANCE POLICIES Absences Regular school attendance is required by law and is necessary for good scholarship (Education Code 48200). The faculty at OVCA recognizes the relationship between student attendance in class and academic success. In order to reinforce student recognition of this relationship, the administration may use a student’s attendance record in determining continued enrollment, credit for a class, or promotion to the next grade. OVCA asks that parents notify the office the day of absence by phone. This allows the teachers to prepare for the student’s return, and ensures that the school should not be expecting your student.

Returning After an Absence When a student returns to school after being absent, the student must report to the office with a signed excuse if the office has not already been notified. If the office was previously notified, the student may report to class to begin the next day.

Missed Class Time Once a student arrives on school campus he may not leave without proper clearance through the school office. Leaving campus or unexcused class absence will be considered truancy and will be handled as such. All students must be signed out through the school office by a parent or guardian. Please refer to section on truancy for further details on truancy. In order to participate in extracurricular activities, students must be in school no later than 10:00am. (Note: students with a doctor’s note, or prior clearance from the administration, may be allowed to participate upon approval from the athletic director and the administration.)

Excessive Absences In adherence to the California Education Code (Education Code 48200), OVCA has designed guidelines for excessive absenteeism. Students who are absent fifteen (15) or more days in a class per semester may not receive credit for that course, or be promoted to the next grade level. All non-school-related absences count toward the total, and for this purpose there is no differentiation between excused/unexcused absences other than school-related business, or college visits.

Consequences for absences are as follows (7th-12th grades):

5 Absences

10 absences/semester

Warning Letter

Attendance probation and attendance school assignment

9

15 absences/semester

Attendance probation

and/or in-school suspension

and/or 2nd attendance school assignment and/or possible loss of academic credit

20 absences/semester

Possible loss of academic credit and/or extended school suspension and/or possible dismissal from OVCA

Continued absenteeism will lead to “Attendance Probation.” Attendance Probation may affect participation points in study skills, exclude students from awards eligibility, and could affect enrollment decisions.

Tardiness In order to minimize distractions to the learning environment, it is imperative for students to be on time for school and classes throughout the school day. Tardiness occurs when a student is not in his assigned seat when school or class begins. “Tardies” are accumulated per semester and may lead to certain consequences. Tardiness is divided into two types: arrival after 8:00am (K-12th), and arrival to subsequent classes after the tardy bell rings (7th-12th). All tardiness will be tracked to monitor student responsibility and punctuality, and is classified as follows: Excused Tardy - Traffic accidents and personal emergencies (as approved by administration); staff members causing a student to be late for class. Unexcused Tardy - Late car pools, running out of gas, oversleeping, traffic in general, missing school supplies, distance between classrooms, PE, etc.

Consequences for all unexcused tardiness will be as follows:

10 tardies/semester

Warning Letter

15 tardies/semester

Attendance probation

and/or in-school suspension

and/or attendance school assignment and/or possible loss of academic credit

20+ tardies/semester

Possible loss of academic credit

and/or Extended suspension

and/or possible dismissal from OVCA

10

Truancy Truancy is a serious matter resulting in consequences, as well as affecting a student’s enrollment at OVCA. OVCA description of student truancy: 1.

Absent for reasons that are neither acceptable to the school nor approved by the parents (this includes skipping one or more classes and/or school).

2.

Absent and shown to misrepresent facts in order to make it appear that the student attended school as required by law.

3.

Late ten (10) minutes or more to a class without a pass.

The California Education Code requires that after a student has been reported as truant three or more times in one school year, the student will be deemed a habitual truant (EC Section 48260). Truancy must be cleared within 3 days to remove truancy from the attendance record. In cases of excessive truancy, OVCA may be required by law to report truancy to local governing authorities.

DRESS CODE Overview The purpose of the OVCA dress code is two-fold: to create an atmosphere of higher achievement by higher standards, and to minimize distractions on campus and in the classroom. As part of our mission to equip students socially, a dress code helps train students to see that our appearance is often the first impression others get of us. Adult employees in many professional, military, and service occupations are required to meet expectations or standards for attire. For a student, proper attire is an indication to his teacher that he is prepared to meet the expectations of the school day. A well-dressed student body also creates an atmosphere of unity and purpose. Through school standards for dress, we avoid issues with immodest or distracting styles or content. At OVCA, each student is expected to be modestly and appropriately attired and groomed at all times. Although modesty is a relative term, for our standards, modesty can be described as avoiding the following:

● Tight-fitting clothing ● Revealing clothing ● Visible undergarments ● Pants/shorts that are too baggy or sag ● Garments landing well above the knee OVCA Student Dress Code Clothes may be purchased from our approved vendor, Educational Outfitters. You may also choose to purchase clothes of the same design, color, material, and style from a department store of your choice. Items purchased at vendors other than OVCA approved vendors must be free of writing and graphics. 11

The approved options and broad variety of colors and styles permitted by our dress code allow for personal expression on campus, while still showing our students that what they wear or how they dress are not as important as the welfare of their mind, body, and spirit. Our guidelines take the focus off how one dresses, lessen distractions, and showcase whom the student really is. Note: All clothing should be in new or “like-new” condition. Clothing should be free of holes or tears and should fit properly. Tops

● Students should wear plain, solid color polo-style shirts. ● Shirts should have a collar, and be free of logos. ● Shirts can be long or short-sleeved. ● Undershirts should have no visible writing or graphics. ● OVCA school colors are red, white, and navy blue. Other colors are acceptable as well. Bottoms

● Students should wear standard school uniform style pants or shorts without cargo style pockets (This does not include denim/jeans material). Dockers/Dickies style school uniform pants and shorts are acceptable.

● Girls can also wear capris, skirts, skorts, and jumpers of a modest length. ● Acceptable colors for all bottoms are navy, tan/khaki, grey, and black. ● OVCA school plaid is available through Educational Outfitters. Outerwear Coats, jackets, sweatshirts, and sweaters should be free of writing and graphics (unless purchased from or issued by OVCA). Accessories/Other

● Hairstyles should not be a distraction due to style or color. Please avoid unnatural hair coloring; it is considered extreme and a distraction.

● Facial hair should be neatly trimmed. ● Shoes should be closed-toed and closed-heeled, and be appropriate for the activities of the day (i.e. recess and/or Physical Education). No sandals, flip-flops, or Croc-style shoes.

● Hats or caps (including hoods) are allowed outdoors. They should be free of writing and graphics (unless purchased from or issued by OVCA).

● Additional accessories or wearable items at school should be free of inappropriate or questionable writing or graphics.

The administration reserves the right to determine whether or not a student is in compliance with the dress code. Clothing associated with particular groups, or of an extreme style is not permitted. Piercings on boys, piercings 12

other than on the ear for girls, and tattoos are discouraged. Students must understand and agree to comply with dress code standards before they are allowed to attend class. If a dress code issue can be corrected on campus, it will be accomplished without parent involvement. However, OVCA may notify parents of dress code concerns if necessary. To download a Dress Code Reference Guide, please visit our website. Spirit Wear As an alternative to our daily dress code, students may be permitted to wear school-issued spirit wear t-shirts on designated Fridays throughout the school year. In addition to dress code style pant/short options, students are permitted to wear blue or black full-length jeans or capris on spirit wear days only. Jeans should not be baggy, torn or tight fitting. Jean shorts are not permitted.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES A Prerequisite For the privilege of participating in extracurricular activities, students must maintain acceptable grades, citizenship and attendance records. Regulations for Extracurricular Activities The following general rules governing extracurricular activities are applicable to all students, whether they are participants or spectators. 1.

All OVCA activities are under the jurisdiction of the school, and students are expected to be as responsible and cooperative at an activity as they are in the classroom.

2.

In accordance with our OVCA dress code, students must dress appropriately and modestly at all extracurricular activities. Immodest or inappropriate attire at any school activity may result in the removal of the student or exclusion from an activity.

Athletics

Physical Education (PE) Clothing All Junior and Senior High students are required to dress out for physical education in an OVCA-issued PE uniform. One t-shirt and short set is provided through the student fee at no additional cost. Extra sets of PE clothing may be purchased. Clothing should neat and clean at all times, with no holes. Â PE uniforms should be worn only on campus during designated PE times. Spirit wear, team, or other school shorts/shirts will not be allowed without prior approval. Students may wear solid-colored, logo-free, navy blue, black, or gray sweatshirt and/or sweatpants to PE, or purchase sets from OVCA. When practice uniforms are not issued for a sport, a PE uniform will be issued (if not already issued) and is the required attire for practices. If the issued practice uniform is not being worn, the PE uniform should then be worn 13

unless otherwise stated by the head coach. Sports Fees Student participation in the sports program is primarily funded by the student fee, which supports 5th-12th grade organized athletics. The student fee must be paid in full by August 1st of each year, or in two equal payments due prior to the beginning of school. New students beginning after the school year begins must pay the student fee prior to the student beginning school. Note: Cheerleading is excluded from the student fee, and participation will require additional costs as determined by the athletic director. Junior Cheer is a fundraiser for varsity cheerleading, and is not funded by tuition or fees.

Sports Uniforms The school will provide team uniforms and other clothing as funds allow. When possible, uniforms will be school owned. Full replacement costs apply for lost uniform pieces, and for damaged uniform pieces not related to damage incurred through normal in-game use. Any charges related to loss or damaged school property will be added to the student’s FACTS account as an incidental charge. Note: Cheer uniforms are not provided by OVCA.

Standards of Eligibility for Athletic Participation Eligibility will include all aspects of extracurricular activities and responsibility. 1.

Academics/Citizenship a.

Students must maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale with no more than one (1) “F” in any class.

b. Eligibility will be determined at the conclusion of each nine-week grading period, or “quarter”. c.

Any student receiving an “F” in a class may not be allowed to miss that class for any extracurricular activities during his/her probation period.

d. Any class made up will be added to the student’s transcript. The grade earned may be used to determine eligibility for the following quarter.

2.

e.

A two-week practice allowance before a new quarter begins may be granted if an ineligible student improves academically.

f.

Student conduct on and/or off the field or court may be used as a criterion to determine eligibility for participation.

Additional Regulations a.

To participate in any extracurricular activity (including practices), a student should arrive to school by 10:00am that day.

b. In the event a student loses his/her eligibility, it is at the discretion of the faculty advisor or coach and the administration to make final decisions on reinstatement. 14

a.

Commitment to a sport is required before a student will be issued a uniform and allowed to participate in a competition. A student must participate in a minimum of 5 practices (10 for HS football) before they can compete or travel with the team.

b. In the event that the number of willing and eligible players exceeds the allowable number of players, a “travel team” made up of a reduced number of players may be chosen by the head coach and approved by the athletic director, which would travel to away games.

SCHOOL POLICIES Community Service Students in grades 7-12 must annually complete the required amounts of community, school, and church service hours. The service hours must be properly recorded and reported according to semester due dates, and are required for promotion/graduation.

Electronic Devices and Personal Property Research shows that schools with a “no personal electronic device” policy foster higher achieving students than schools with permissive personal electronics policies. OVCA is very pro-digital, seeking to foster wisdom and skill in regard digital media use, creation, and consumption as well as utilizing electronic devices and media in meaningful and productive ways. However, in order to ensure the safety and integrity of all students, to protect personal property, and to make sure the educational process and learning environment are not disrupted, students are not permitted to use personal electronic devices before or during school hours (unless instructed by a teacher). This includes mobile/cellular phones, and watches or other devices with cameras, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth capabilities, including electronic translators. Electronic translators may be used when permitted as long as they are not Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or data capable. Use of electronic devices during the course of the school day will result in the confiscation of the device. Confiscated electronic devices will only be returned to a parent or legal guardian. Any subsequent use of electronic devices during the course of the school day will be handled at the discretion of the administration. Ocean View Christian Academy is not responsible for the loss of personal property.

Gum Chewing Students are not permitted to chew gum on campus.

Help Class Help Class in elementary grades requires teacher approval and is typically offered to students who need additional assistance in core subject areas, primarily English language arts and math. Parents who feel Help Class would be beneficial to their child may schedule a conference with the teacher to obtain approval. Help Class may be held no 15

later than 3:30 pm. At the secondary level, any student may attend a Help Class for additional instruction in a subject as offered according to the teacher’s schedule. 7th through 12th grade teachers establish Help Class schedule for their students and typically have at least two sessions per week.

Illness or Emergency A student requiring care for illness or injury will be sent to the office with a pass from his or her teacher. In some cases, a student should not remain at school and a parent will be contacted to pick up the student. Any child/adolescent with an elevated temperature or vomiting will be sent home and will remain in the office until a parent/ guardian arrives. When a student misses school due to illness, the student must be fever free and not contagious before returning to school. Doctor notes are not required but may be requested depending on the circumstance. Note: To protect others from illness or medical concerns (such as communicable and contagious conditions), Ocean View Christian Academy always reserves the right to deny re-admittance to any student who, in the opinion of OVCA administration or designee, may present a concern to the health and/or well being of others. In an emergency, the principal, or his designee, will act in the best interest and safety of all students. If emergency personnel are deemed necessary, the appropriate first responders will be contacted. All parents/guardians are required to maintain health care coverage for their children while enrolled at OVCA and will serve as the primary health care coverage for all incidents occurring while on campus or off-campus at and during school-related activities.

Language Ocean View Christian Academy has a diverse student population with many languages represented. Although this provides a rich cultural experience, English is the common language that connects all of our students of various nationalities and ethnic backgrounds and which all students should understand. Therefore, out of respect for all, students are strongly encouraged to speak English while on school campus or at school activities unless a subject calls for another language to be spoken or learned.

Lunch/Food All food items should be consumed within the designated eating areas during assigned times and under the supervision of a staff member. No food may be consumed in classrooms or hallways (bottled water is allowed based on teacher discretion). Due to allergies and other concerns, elementary students are not permitted to share food. Junior/senior high students should exercise discernment in sharing food.

Playground Snacks If students need/desire a healthy snack during recess or would like to finish remaining food items from lunch, they must do so sitting out of play time until all food is consumed. At no time are students to be involved in play activities while eating. 16

Commercial Food Policy [Official Statement] Rev. 03/2016 To insure the safety of our students all food items brought on campus for the intention of distribution and consumption among students (parties, class events, etc.) must be commercially purchased or prepared in a commercially approved facility as mandated through the Health Department of San Diego. We are committed to providing a safe consumable food product free from labeled food allergens. Examples of approved food products include baked goods either prepackaged commercially or prepared at a grocer or bakery and other products that are commercially bagged or packaged for sale and intended for consumption. Due to insects, pesticides, and fertilizer, fruit must also be purchased from a grocery or retailer and grown with the intended purpose of consumption. School lunches provided by OVCA are produced in an approved kitchen with known vendors as their purveyors. Student lunches that are brought onto campus do not need to follow these guidelines and are intended for the sole consumption of the student who brought them. For the safety of our students, food not commercially produced should not be shared with others.

Medication To protect all children and to conform to the California Education Code (49423), no child may bring any medication (prescription or nonprescription) to school without prior authorization. Education Code Section 49423 provides statutory authority for assistance with medication in California schools. Education Code Section 49423 states: Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 49422, any student who is required to take, during the regular school day, medication prescribed for him by a physician, may be assisted by the school nurse or other designated school personnel if the school receives (1) a written statement from such physician detailing the method, amount, and time schedules by which such medication is to be taken and (2) a written statement from the parent or guardian of the student indicating the desire that the school assist the student in the matters set forth in the physician’s statement. Medication, whether prescription or nonprescription, must be accompanied by an OVCA Medication Form and delivered by a parent or guardian to the school office in the original labeled container. The parent or guardian of the student must indicate on the Medication Form the intent that the school assist with the administration of medication as set forth by the physician’s statement. Regarding the Administration of Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medications in School, “All over-the-counter (OTC) medications administered in school under CCR Title 5 Article 4.1 shall have a written statement from the authorized health care provider and the parent or guardian” (CCR, Title 5, sections 600 and 601[b]). Note: Before any OTC medication that has not been prescribed by the student’s authorized health care provider will be administered to students by the school, the parent or guardian must provide a written statement following the provisions of Section 49422.

Parking Lot Drivers should follow the 5 mph speed limit on campus. Please be mindful of pedestrians at all times and consider the general flow of traffic. During the drop-off and pick-up time, vehicles should follow designated or general traffic flow patterns.

17

Student Drivers Students who drive to/on campus must have a copy of their driver’s license and valid U.S. insurance card on file in the school office. Students’ vehicles should be parked in the northeastern-most parking lot (east of the gymnasium).

Pets For the safety of all students and personnel, no pets of any kind are allowed on the OVC/OVCA campus or parking lot during school hours or activities unless the administration has given special permission in advance. In the event of any incident involving pets on property, the pet owner will be liable for any expenses incurred. Animal control will be contacted for any and all loose animals on campus.

Pledges and Prayer In recognition of our Christian and American heritage, pledges will be conducted on a daily basis. All students are required to stand in respect of the pledges to the American flag, the Christian flag, and the Bible. Prayer is a foundational part of Christian faith, and therefore, our ministry as a Christian school. It is how we commune with God and make our requests or petitions known to Him. At OVCA we begin all classes with prayer and expect students to participate in this practice out of respect, as well as a means of strengthening their personal spiritual growth.

Public Displays of Affection Morality and responsible, edifying relationships are values we strive to instill in all of our students. While on campus or at school activities, students are required to show restraint and discipline regarding physical contact. Embraces, handholding, kissing, and other similar contact between students is not allowed. This policy is designed to teach students that physical contact is not a necessary element in having positive interaction with others, and that self-control is a valuable and virtuous trait.

School Day Arrival The school day begins at 8:00am each day. Â It is preferred that all students arrive on campus no later than 7:50am to be ready for class on time. Elementary students line up according to class in their designated area, between 7:30am and 7:50am daily and are retrieved by their classroom teacher at 7:50am. Students in grades K-6 are dropped off prior to 7:30am must be signed-in to Patriot Care by a parent or guardian (additional costs apply). Junior and senior high school students must be on the lunch patio if they are on campus before 7:55am. Students are not permitted in the hallways or classrooms prior to morning dismissal at approximately 7:55am unless directly supervised by a teacher. 18

Note: Teachers do not hold before-school conferences unless prearranged and for extenuating circumstances. Dismissal Elementary students are dismissed daily at 2:35pm. Students will not be permitted to cross the parking lot alone or be dismissed to walk by themselves to a waiting car. Please pick up and drop off students in the designated areas. If students are not picked up by 2:45pm, classroom teachers will sign any remaining students into Patriot Care (additional costs apply). Junior and senior high school students are dismissed daily at 2:45pm. Students should be off-campus by 3:00pm and are not permitted in the halls or classrooms after this time unless attending help-classes, meeting with teachers, or working on teacher supervised tasks. Any student on campus after 3:00pm and not involved with an organized afterschool activity must be on the lunch patio while awaiting transportation. Minimum Days OVCA occasionally has “minimum days” to facilitate grading at the end of a school quarter or professional development. On these days, elementary students are dismissed at 11:35am and junior/senior high students are dismissed at 11:45am. Elementary students not picked up by 11:45am will be signed into after-school Patriot Care for an additional charge and all 7th through 12th grade students should be off campus by 12:00pm unless involved in an organized or pre-arranged activity. As with any school day, students are not permitted in hallways or classrooms after school and should be on the lunch patio while awaiting transportation.

Skates, Roller Blades, Bicycles, and Skateboards Skates, skateboards, and rollerblades should not be used or ridden on campus at any time. If one of these items is brought to school, it should be checked into the office during school hours. Bicycles may be ridden to school and should remain locked at all times while on campus. OVCA does not assume any responsibility for these items if brought to campus.

Student Insurance All parents/guardians must maintain primary health insurance for their children during the school year. While the family is primarily responsible for student health insurance, the school does provide a supplemental policy for accidents occurring on school grounds or at activities during normal school hours (7:45am-3:00pm). Students are also covered while participating in school-sponsored activities on or off the OVCA campus after the normal school day. This supplemental coverage takes effect after the primary insurance has been exhausted. Students must report all injuries to the school office. Accident report forms cannot be completed if the proper school personnel do not have record of the injuries.

Visitors OVCA has a closed campus policy regarding visitation between the hours of 7:45am-3:30pm Monday through Friday. Visitors with school business must sign-in at the school office upon arrival to campus and wear a visible school issued badge at all times. Any visitor not displaying a visible school issued badge will be asked to go to the office to sign-in. Visitors should behave and dress in a manner appropriate for our school. Classroom visits are for class 19

parties such as birthdays, holidays, and other occasions as arranged by the classroom teacher. Visitors should signout and return badges to the office prior to departing. Classroom visits for observation are typically not permitted unless extenuating circumstances exist as determined by OVCA administration. At no time should a parent visit a classroom without first checking in at the office. Forgotten items, messages, and other pertinent business should always be facilitated through the school office to ensure safety and to minimize disruption to instructional and teacher preparation time.

Volunteers OVCA values those who are willing to donate their time to help provide a positive and productive environment. Whether serving lunches during one of the four lunch periods on campus, coaching or assistant coaching one of our many athletic teams, keeping stats, taking photos, cutting out parts and pieces for art projects, coordinating and/or assisting with parties, field trips, or helping fulfill many other important roles, our volunteers are vital to the success of our programs. With so many different ways in which volunteers can be involved, OVCA has three volunteer “tiers” to help us ensure that proper due diligence and screening are in place to protect our volunteers, our students, and our school. 3 tiers of volunteering: Tier 1. Occasional Volunteer - This is someone who may assist on campus once in a while without any regularity. An occasional volunteer must complete a Volunteer Packet, but is not required to complete Live Scan screening. Basic Volunteer Packet – No Live Scan Screening Tier 2. Regular Volunteer - This is someone who is planning to volunteer with some regularity, whether it is once a week, or 2-3 times per month, or more. A regular volunteer must complete a volunteer packet and complete Live Scan screening. Basic Volunteer Packet – With Live Scan Screening Tier 3. Cafeteria/Coaching - This is for any person who wishes to volunteer in the kitchen, or coach/ assistant coach in any capacity. A kitchen aid must complete a food handler’s course and a coach must complete a volunteer packet with Live Scan screening in addition to a coaching packet. Basic Volunteer Packet – With Live Scan Screening and additional coaching/cafeteria requirements.

● Coaching Requirements - CIF Code of Ethics - Coaches Form, OVCA Employee/Coach Commitment

● Kitchen Requirements - Successful completion of a state certified food handlers course and a current food handler’s permit card, submitted copy of a current TB test

Who must complete the volunteer packet? Any person who wishes to volunteer at OVCA must complete a volunteer packet. 20

Chaperones on field trips do not need to complete a parent volunteer packet unless they:

● Will be supervising children without a staff member present - Tier 2 Volunteer. ● Will be driving students who are not their own children in their personal vehicle - Tier 2 Volunteer. ● Are attending an overnight field trip - Tier 2 Volunteer. Note: All drivers must have a completed driver’s agreement on file as well as a current copy of both driver’s license and insurance card.

Withdrawals To withdraw a student from school, a parent must complete a withdrawal form in the school office. All financial and administrative obligations must be resolved before a student withdraws from school, as outlined in the Financial Contract. Student grades will be marked as incomplete until all obligations are met.

STANDARDS OF CONDUCT Philosophy of Discipline For moral training to be effective, the school and home must be parallel in disciplinary philosophy. OVCA uses the instruction and truths found in the Word of God, the Bible, to guide its methodology. The following guidelines are the basis for discipline at OVCA:

● The standard of conduct has been set by the life of Christ. (I Peter 1:16) ● The responsibility and authority to discipline comes from God. (Eph. 6:1-4) ● Christian love is at the heart of all discipline. Correction and chastening are as much a part of that love as encouraging and leading. Firmness must be balanced with love. Firmness minus love becomes harsh, whereas love without firmness is sentimentality. (Prov. 3:11-12)

● All discipline is designed to show the child his sinful will, lead them to trust Christ, and help them to become a self-disciplined person who wants to do God’s will. (Gal. 3:19-24)

Attendance at OVCA is a privilege. A student who displays conduct or attitude, in or out of school, that is in opposition, or antagonistic, to the basic principles and purpose of the school may be suspended or expelled from school.

Behavior Code The principal or the principal’s designee has the right to apply disciplinary action that they feel is necessary to maintain an atmosphere in which spiritual, academic, social, and physical growth can take place. The administration depends upon a behavior code in order to ensure consistency and also to ensure that the school community is aware of behavioral expectations. The students can expect the administration to enforce the behavior code in any of the following ways: 21

● Any combination of offenses that occur in any one instance may result in a more serious disciplinary action (i.e., suspension/expulsion).

● A student receiving a suspension will be placed on probation upon return to school for a minimum of one semester.

● A student may receive written notification of the incident on an Office Referral form. Students must get the referral signed by a parent, and return it to the office the following school day or they may not be allowed to return to class. Referrals are retained on file in the school office.

● Communication regarding discipline issues may be through an Office Referral Form, Headmaster, email, or a phone call.

Note: Please refer to the OVCA Discipline Chart for additional guidelines.

Conduct/Citizenship Students may receive a quarterly conduct/citizenship grade based on either one of two scales: the traditional A-F scale, or the OSNU scale. O, S, N, and U marks are given in accordance with the following criteria: O (Outstanding) – A model citizen who obeys school rules and actively participates in class. S (Satisfactory) – Obeys school rules, does what is expected most of the time. N (Needs Improvement) – Occasionally engages in negative behaviors, disrupts learning environment, and/or distracts peers. U (Unsatisfactory) – Routinely engages in negative behaviors, does not follow class rules, parent conference needed.

Campus Discipline OVCA desires and expects the best of our students, however we understand that occasionally students can make poor choices. With this in mind, disciplinary measures or discipleship may be given as a means of corrective action, and would be in alignment with the severity of an offense. When necessary, a restoration process may be implemented in order to achieve desired student growth. 1. Attendance School Assignment Students who receive an Attendance School assignment will be required to attend a 3-hour concentrated work-study class. Attendance School date and time will be determined by the administration. Notification will be sent home outlining the causes of the assignment, as well as other details. (See Attendance Policies for parameters.) 2. Detention Detention may be assigned by school personnel for minor infractions. Detention is generally held after school from 2:50pm to 3:30pm. Students assigned detention must arrive on time, be prepared with material on which to work, and return the detention slip signed by a parent/guardian. 22

1. Disciplinary Probation If a student repeatedly fails to respond to discipline, earns poor citizenship marks, or is involved in a particular incident that requires more intensive corrective action. The student will be placed on behavioral probation. The administration will review teacher evaluations and the student’s behavioral file to determine whether the student will be allowed to continue attending OVCA based on the terms of the probationary contract. 2. Suspensions Any student may be suspended from attending classes for non-compliance to the OVCA Standards of Conduct, or when other means of correction fail to bring about proper behavior for a more severe or repeated/cumulative offense(s). A student that has been suspended may not receive credit for the class work or homework missed. However, the student will be responsible for the material missed on future quizzes and tests. If allowed, the day the student returns is the only opportunity to turn in any work missed, and to take any quizzes/tests administered while he or she was suspended. Following the suspension period, the administration will decide to what extent the student will be able to participate in school activities. a.

Class/In-School Suspension When suspended from class, a student reports to the office in lieu of attending class. The student will still be responsible for any classwork, quiz or test.

b. Full-Day/Out-of-School Suspension When a student is to be removed from class(es) for an entire day. The student will either complete classwork in the office, or will not be allowed to attend school for the day. c.

Extended Suspension When an infraction warrants, an extended suspension may be imposed. The severity of the infraction, previous history, and student response to correction, are variables in determining length of suspension.

3. Expulsion Expulsion from school is serious and is applied with prudence and restraint after careful investigation and administrative review. An expulsion is a consequence for serious or repeated noncompliance to the Standards of Conduct. Terms of Expulsion: a.

Students expelled from school may not attend any school activity or school-sponsored event without prior administrative approval.

b. Expelled students may not receive academic credit for the current 9-week grading period’s coursework. c.

The administration will determine expulsion length. Generally, expulsions will last from 1 semester to a full school year. Students that have been expelled may petition to be reinstated at the end of that time period.

d. Upon administrative review of the incident(s) leading to expulsion, the principal will then de23

cide whether the student will be allowed to re-enroll on a probationary status.

Student Social Media Use First and foremost, students are encouraged to always exercise the utmost caution when participating in any form of social media or online communications, both within the OVCA community and beyond. Realize and Recognize Students must recognize that information posted on the Internet is public and permanent, and can have a longterm impact on an individual’s life and career. Even those posts made in a private forum, on a private account, or through various messaging apps can end up being shared and re-shared publicly. Students must realize that the public and/or private digital presence through social media platforms and applications are a reflection of the student’s heart (Proverbs 4:23) and indicate thoughts and intents. School Community Involvement It is not the objective of OVCA to monitor and govern students’ social media/digital presence. However, when a parent or student expresses concern for the safety, emotional, mental, and/or spiritual health of a peer/student, it may be brought to the attention of OVCA. In which case, OVCA has an obligation, first to the parents of the student in question, as well as that student, and second, to the health and wellbeing of the school culture and climate, which impacts the student body and their families. OVCA will review these concerns with students and parents based on the goal of understanding, grace, love, restoration, and accountability. Expectations Therefore, expectations for student behavior online are no different than on campus interactions. Students who participate in online communities must remember that their online behavior impacts and affects the entire OVCA community, and as such, is subject to the same behavioral expectations as set forth in the Student Handbook. Students are encouraged to use the following biblical principles to guide their digital presence: ●

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person (Col. 4:6).

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear (Eph. 4:29).

A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit (Prov. 15:4).

Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels (2 Tim. 2:23).

Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s. (1 Corinthians 6:18-20)

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. (1 Cor. 10:31)

Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matt 5:16)

Failure to abide by this policy, as with other policies at OVCA, may result in disciplinary action by administration, which may include parental involvement, suspension, or removal from school based on the severity of the offense.

STATEMENT OF COOPERATION Parent Statement of Cooperation Ocean View Christian Academy is founded on the Biblical principle that ultimately parents, not the school, are responsible before God to train up their children. The faculty and staff of OVCA desire to come alongside the parents and help them in fulfilling their God-given responsibility. Parents must understand that in order for their child to thrive in our program, we need their full support. The school is to be an extension of the Christian home, to reinforce moral and ethical standings in the light of God’s Word. As a sign of agreement, Ocean View Christian Academy asks for acceptance of the following statements for admission.

25

We, as parents accepting the challenge to “train up a child in the way he should go,” do state that this training will be carried on in the home. We place our trust in Ocean View Christian Academy to extend that training more completely. (Proverbs 22:6)

We recognize that it is a privilege for our child to attend this school and that the school reserves the right to dismiss any student who does not cooperate with the ideals and educational process of the school. (Ephesians 5:15-16)

We will provide spiritual guidance through activities such as church attendance, prayer, and Bible reading. (Proverbs 22:6)

We realize that building a strong relationship with our child’s teacher to aid in the training of our child is as much our responsibility as it is the school’s responsibility. We will endeavor to maintain open communication with the teacher. We will be faithful to read and follow through with all correspondence sent from the teacher. (i.e. Headmaster, student planner, e-mail, etc.) (Ephesians 4:3)

We will cooperate fully with the school. We will be careful to support teachers, school, and church policies in front of our children and others. We will bring any and all questions and criticisms directly to the appropriate staff member so that they may be properly resolved with discretion. (Matthew 18:15-20)

We will support the school’s discipline plan and give the teachers and administrators full discretion in the discipline of our child at school. (Proverbs 3:11-12)

We will make sure that our child attends school daily and is on time. (Proverbs 13:4)

We will maintain primary health insurance for our child during the school year.

We give permission for our child to take part in all school-related activities including school-sponsored field trips away from school premises. We absolve the school from any liability toward us, or our child, while at school, during any school activity, and/or during athletic practices or sporting events.

We agree to uphold and support high academic standards by providing a place at home to study and to encourage the completion of homework assignments.

We agree to pay reasonable assessments to cover damage to the school or personal property of others caused by our child.

We agree to attend school orientation and other school meetings related to our child.

We agree to follow the OVCA Parent-Student Handbook and abide by the stated guidelines.

We agree to forfeit the privilege of our child attending school should we fail to comply with the established regulations, discipline, and financial obligation of Ocean View Christian Academy.

Based on the scriptural mandate that Christians are not to sue one another (I Cor.6:1-8), we understand that we choose binding arbitration instead of litigation to resolve any disputes between us. OVCA agrees the same.

Student Statement of Cooperation [5th through 12th Grade Students] One of the goals of Ocean View Christian Academy is to teach students to treasure home and church families, and to be responsible for their own behavior. Also, our faculty and staff desire to equip students to deal biblically and confidently with the unbelieving world, as well as help them to become articulate, God-honoring citizens of their countries. Our students accept teachers’ help by working hard and responding positively to loving correction. In that light, Ocean View Christian Academy asks for our 5th through 12th grade students’ agreement with the following statements for enrollment. ●

I recognize that it is a privilege for me to attend OVCA and that the school reserves the right to dismiss any student who does not cooperate with the ideals and educational process of the school. (Ephesians 5:15-16)

I will develop my spiritual life through activities such as church attendance, prayer, and Bible reading. (Proverbs 22:6)

I will endeavor to maintain open communication with the teacher. I will be faithful to read and follow through with all correspondence sent from the teacher. (i.e., student planner, e-mail, etc.) (Ephesians 4:3)

I will cooperate fully with the school. I will be careful to support teachers, school, and church policies in front of others. I will bring any and all questions and criticisms directly to the appropriate staff member so that they may be properly resolved with discretion. (Matthew 18:15-20)

I will support the school’s discipline plan and give the teachers and administrators full discretion in matters of discipline. I realize that detention may be used for various offenses and non-completion of work at home and school. (Proverbs 3:11-12)

I will endeavor to attend school daily and arrive on time. (Proverbs 13:4)

I agree to uphold and support high academic standards by studying at home if necessary and completing homework assignments.

I agree to pay reasonable assessments to cover any damage I cause to the school or personal property of others.

I agree to attend school orientation and other school meetings related to my education.

I agree to follow the OVCA handbook and abide by the stated guidelines.

I agree to forfeit the privilege of attending OVCA should I fail to comply with the established regulations, or discipline of Ocean View Christian Academy.

26

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS The Bible teaches that our behavior and attitude are issues of the heart (Proverbs 4:23). At OVCA we seek to purpose hearts and minds as we correct students in these important areas. No student is perfect and our standard is not perfection, but rather humility and progress. When a student displays conduct or an attitude that indicates a deeper heart issue, it is the school’s obligation to address the issue in an appropriate, loving, and biblical manner reflecting both what is in the best interest of the individual student for growth in Christ-likeness as well as the good of edification of the corporate student body. Therefore, the following student expectations reinforce our Standards of Conduct, apply to all students, and serve as a guide if corrective action becomes necessary. This is not an exhaustive list as we recognize that every situation is unique. We continually strive to serve students with empathy through principle and grace.

Campus/Classroom Disruptions Students are expected to follow the guidelines established by the administration and teachers for acceptable campus/classroom behavior and interaction.

Cheating/Attempting to Cheat/Plagiarism We expect students to do their own work on all school assignments and tests. Cheating/Plagiarism is considered theft and a misrepresentation of work in an attempt to deceive.

Deception Deception is the act of, but not limited to, lying, misleading, committing a dishonest act, falsifying or altering school documents or failing to provide accurate, truthful information.

Defiance of Authority Defiance refers to the refusal of the student to follow the directions of any school employee. This includes, but is not limited to, refusal to give legal name, accompany the staff member to the office or hallway, or any other non-compliance regarding a specific instruction.

Destruction of Property/Vandalism Vandalism is the damaging or destruction of school, church, fellow student, or public property. This includes but is not limited to breaking of windows, damaging restroom/plumbing fixtures, graffiti or tagging, writing in or on textbooks, desks, counters, tabletops, etc.

Dress Code 27

OVCA is a place of learning and business. Student dress and appearance should reflect this image. Students are expected to exercise good judgment regarding their attire and grooming so as not to disrupt the educational environment and to establish a healthy school climate. OVCA has developed a dress code with the goals of helping students to practice biblical principles of modesty and moderation while avoiding extreme styles. OVCA does not allow students to convey, through their dress or conduct, immoral or inappropriate lifestyles or group affiliation. (See dress code section of this handbook for a detailed listing of dress guidelines.)

Drugs/Alcohol Possession, Use, Selling, Buying Prohibited substances include prescriptions, narcotics, marijuana, hallucinogens, amphetamines, or substitutes of any kind (i.e. aerosol cans, glues, etc.). California law states that for the protection of other students, the governing board of any school/district may suspend or expel a student whenever it is established to the satisfaction of the board, superintendent, or the principal (or designee), respectively, that the student has, on school grounds or elsewhere, used, sold, or been in possession of narcotics or other hallucinogenic drugs, substances or paraphernalia. Alcohol use refers to the drinking of alcohol by a student. Alcohol possession refers to a student having a consumable alcoholic substance of any kind within his/her custody or control on school grounds or elsewhere. Substance possession, use, or distribution on or off campus is grounds for suspension or dismissal from OVCA.

Explosives/Weapons Explosives: In San Diego county, the possession or lighting of an explosive device is illegal without an official permit. The use or possession of any explosive device, regardless of size, on campus or at a school-sponsored activity will not be tolerated. The threat to use materials to construct an explosive device is considered to be just as serious an offense as the actual use. Weapons: It is a misdemeanor to have weapons on a school campus or at a school-sponsored activity. OVCA considers any item classified as a weapon by a law enforcement agency to be a weapon. This also includes any items that have the appearance of a weapon and/or the use of any object as a weapon.

Fighting Fighting includes the use of physical force against another person or threatening to cause injury to another person. Fighting is not tolerated at OVCA.

Hazing/Intimidation Hazing refers to any action by a person or persons that results in physical or psychological injury to another. Hazing is illegal and will not be permitted. Intimidation involves threat of mental or physical harm or pressure. Examples of this behavior include, but are not limited to, bullying, domineering, extorting or otherwise attempting to influence someone with the use of frightening actions and/or words. OVCA will immediately work to eliminate any perceived bullying. Severe cases of intimidation are classified as assault. In an assault no physical contact needs to occur, merely the fact that contact is threatened may constitute a criminal act.

28

Internet/Computer/Social Media Use Although the internet can be a useful resource, if used improperly, it can be very harmful. For safety and reputation’s sake, students must refrain from accessing, visiting, sending, or posting inappropriate material on the internet (including social networking sites), both on and off campus.

Profane/Vulgar/Lewd Language or Actions Vulgar means offensive, lewd, uncultured and generally unacceptable. Certain words and gestures fit the description of vulgar, and their use on campus will not be tolerated.

Public Display of Affection Students are reminded that their actions reflect on them personally. Public display of affection includes any sensual or sexual physical contact or gestures between students, such as holding hands, kissing, hugging, etc. Any physical display of affection is inappropriate on school grounds or at a school sponsored activity.

Personal Property To maintain the safety of all students, to protect personal property, and to ensure the educational process is not disrupted, skates, skate-boards, cameras, music players, recording devices, cellular phones/devices, may not be used or visible during school hours. In addition, the state law prohibits any paging devices and signaling equipment without the prior permission of an administrator. OVCA does not assume responsibility for loss or damage to personal property while on campus or on school sponsored events and/or activities. Please see additional sections in this handbook for further descriptions.

Rough Play/Rough Housing Play that is overly physical in nature such as wrestling, shadow-boxing, pushing and shoving are usually not welcomed by all participants, and can lead to injury or worse. This type of interaction on school grounds is not acceptable and may result in disciplinary action. Students should keep their hands to themselves at all times.

Search and Seizure Lockers, desks, and parking areas are school property, which students are allowed to use as a matter of privilege, not right. Lockers, automobiles, and other personal items are subject to search. The school has the right to perform unannounced searches and to seize any suspect contraband.

Sexual Immorality OVCA students should maintain a morally pure lifestyle.

Smoking, Use or Possession of Tobacco Use or possession of tobacco in any form is against school policy.

Social Media This refers to all social media platforms, applications, and services. See Social Media Policy.

Stealing/Theft, Possession of Stolen Property Theft is defined as taking or possessing anything that belongs to another person or the school. It does not matter whose property or what the property is; it is classified as theft. Also, it does not matter if the property is ultimately returned. The initial act constitutes stealing or theft. Additionally, knowingly receiving stolen property is considered to be theft.

Truancy See Truancy section of Attendance Policies for details regarding truancy. Once a student arrives on campus to attend classes they are not permitted to leave campus without approval until the school day ends. Leaving campus during school hours without permission will result in a serious consequence.

Verbal/Sexual Harassment Students will not engage in conduct constituting harassment such as, but not limited to: unwelcome verbal/sexual comments or advances; disrespectful remarks which may be related to gender, culture, physical characteristic, or ethnic background; or other expressions of intolerance. Any instance of harassment should be immediately reported to the administration.

Violation of Academic, Attendance, or Behavioral Probation Students are placed on a Probation Contract only after careful administrative review along with parent/student notification and/or conference. Terms of the probation, and the expectations, will be clearly stated in the contract. Any violation of these terms will result in possible suspension or dismissal from OVCA.
