Edneys enjoy special tour of White House by Samantha Hurst
Barbara Edney talks fondly of rubbing the curly head of a black and white Portugese water dog on a recent impromptu vacation with her husband, Carl, and their daughter Julie’s family. She then points out, “We had never seen anything like this – we even got to see Bo, the Obama’s dog.” The Edneys’ daughter, Julia Tulloch, is an optometrist in Arden who went to high school and college with Sandy Kuhlman, wife of presidential doctor Jeffery Kuhlman. Dr. Jeffrey Kuhlman is one of several doctors dedicated to the health of President Barack Obama. He was also on hand as a doctor for the Bush administration. Columbus to spend $23k to clear discolored water from Woods well by Leah Justice
Town of Columbus officials said they have exhausted all internal options in efforts to clear up discolored water being produced from the town’s Woods well. Columbus Town Council met Thursday, Sept. 15 and agreed to spend
$23,250 for an iron and manganese sequestration project at the well to clear up discoloration of the water. The work will be done by the town’s public works department. Estimates of costs for hiring a contractor to do the

Greenville sheriff arrests three in Landrum meth bust Family takes custody of 6-monthold in meth home by Samantha Hurst
The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office arrested two females and a male in connection with a meth lab at 106 Turner Barton Road in Landrum on Wednesday, Sept. 21. Lt. Michael Hilderbrand said the sheriff’s office received a tip from the Department of Social Services that the home possibly had children inside where a meth lab was being operated. When deputies arrived, they found a 6-month-old and remnants of a meth lab, according to the sheriff’s office. The sheriff’s office said the child was checked out by EMS on the scene and turned over to

a family member. Officers took into custody 18-year-old Kathleen Ann Gerich of 2666 Mt. Lebanon Church Road in Campobello, 26-year-old Brook Amber Blue of 106 Turner Barton Road in Landrum and Ricci Todd Allen
Jr., also of 106 Turner Barton Road in Landrum. The three suspects have all been charged with manufacture of methamphetamine,the sheriff’s office said. In addition, the parents of the child, Allen and Blue, were charged
with unlawful manufacture of meth in the presence of a minor child and unlawful neglect of a child. Gerich is currently in jail on a $20,000 bond, while Blue and Allen are currently in jail on a $45,000 bond.

Landrum carriage ride, Halloween Stroll The Landrum Area Business Association (LABA) carriage rides on Oct. 14 will feature Charles Harold to talk about who lives where and to tell catchy stories of Landrum. The LABA may also videotape him telling the stories to play on a loop at the library. On Oct. 29, the Landrum Halloween Stroll and Children’s Day will be held from 5-7 p.m. There will be a children’s art show with drawings submitted from local elementary schools from kindergarten through fifth grade. First Baptist Church will host trunk or treat – bounce house, hotdogs and games. The fire department will host a costume contest for kids. Face painting will be offered on N. Trade Ave.

The Polk County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 19 approved applying for rural operating assistance program (ROAP) funding. The county held a public hearing prior to approving the $109,625 in transportation funding.
Polk joins new transportation vehicle maintenance program The Polk County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 19 approved a memorandum of understanding to join a new program mandated by the state using software to monitor and maintain transportation department vehicles used for public transportation. The state will pay for the first two years of the software and Polk County will have to pay the costs from the third year on. The costs to the county after the first two years will be $213/month/user and $24.82 per vehicle.
Polk appoints volunteers to boards The Polk County Board of Commissioners appointed several residents to volunteer boards on Sept. 19. Paul Nelson was appointed to the Polk County Council on Aging, Pat Dockendorf and Cheryl Wright were appointed to the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (JCPC) and William Boyd Jr. was appointed to the nursing home community advisory committee.

PAC kicks off its fall hiking series Friday, Sept. 30 Pacolet Area Conservancy (PAC) will start its series of five area hikes this fall on Sept. 30. PAC’s first hike will head to Bent Creek experimental forest for a six-mile, easy-to-moderate hike on the Hardtimes Loop. On Oct. 14, hikers will head to Lookout Rock, located on the grounds of Montreat College near Asheville, N.C. Here, hikers will conquer a 4.7-mile, moderate-tostrenuous hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains. On Oct. 28, hikers venture to John Rock, in Pisgah National Forest, for a five-mile strenuous hike with views of Looking Glass Rock. On Nov. 2, PAC offers a 1.2mile easy-to-moderate, interpretive hike at the PAC Protected Weaverbarton Shuford Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary located near Columbus. The finale of the fall hiking series, Nov. 11, takes hikers to PAC

Saluda holds Charlie Ward Memorial Pig Out
Saluda residents enjoyed music, barbecue and community at the annual Charlie Ward Memorial Pig Out at McCreery Park, Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011. The barbecue event was started by Charlie Ward many years ago to thank the residents of Saluda for patronizing his store. Polk school bus flips after Burgess Road gives way No injuries reported by Leah Justice
A Polk County School bus flipped down an embankment early this morning after the road gave way, according to Polk County School officials. The accident occurred just after 6:30 a.m. on Burgess Road off Coopers Gap Road in the Sunny View community. Officials with the Polk County Schools Administrative office said the bus was early on the route and had four students onboard; two Polk County Middle School students and two Polk County High School students. The driver, whose name has not been released, pulled over to let a vehicle pass on the gravel road and the bus overturned. Polk County School Superintendent Bill Miller said it is uncommon for a bus to meet another vehicle on Burgess Road
and that is what happened in this case. The bus pulled over to let another car by and the road gave way underneath, causing the bus to overturn and flip down an embankment. School officials said the driver performed calmly and admirably and got all the students off the bus safely. All students were taken to the hospital for observation, but no major injuries were reported. The bus driver did not seek medical attention, according to Miller. “We’re so fortunate no one was hurt,” Miller said. Miller said he would describe the students’ injuries as bumps and bruises. All students were released to their parents. The last school bus accident in Polk County occurred in the 2004-2005 school year when a bus hit a rock that was sticking out of an embankment in the Holbert’s Cove Road area. No one was injured in that accident.

TBFC holds its monthly luncheon Thermal Belt Friendship Council (TBFC) will hold its monthly luncheon this Saturday, Sept. 24 at 11:45 a.m. at El Sureno in Columbus. All are invited. Sometimes I’m asked what “Mind Body Connection” means. I’ve begun to explain it this way: the brain is an organ in our body with its own tasks to perform, just as the rest of our organs do. The heart pumps blood throughout the body to deliver oxygen to our cells. The stomach and gut absorbs our meals to deliver food to our cells. Our kidneys filter out some of the left over waste after our food is used up … and so on. The brain’s job is, in very simple terms, three part: to run our automatic systems (heart, lungs and the like), to produce and process our emotions, and to think. In these terms, the mind is not just “connected” to the body: it is one part of the living body. The thinking part thinks in pictures, in words and in feelings. The thinking pathways are through the nerves, with which our brains are packed, and which connect to everything else in our bodies. And in some ways, over time, our thinking wears ruts in our neural pathways so the thoughts we produce happen automatically. Over the 15 plus years I’ve been a practicing therapist, I’ve noticed that what happens very early in our lives affects the neural pathways we use automatically and the way we think automatically for the rest of our lives, for good and for ill, until we become consciously aware of it and are able to change it. There is extensive literature about the branch of developmental trauma that examines

what goes wrong, when it goes wrong - sometimes even before birth, and the long term effects of those events that were traumatic. Psychotherapy can often help us make the changes we want to make, from more straightforward problems such as being able to pass trucks on a winding highway without anxiety or panic, to more complicated problems such as learning how to trust our own good judgment about other people in our lives and in our close relationships. Just one intervention that I and my clients find very useful is guided imagery using pictures, words and physical feelings in order to experience sensations of safety and comfort in the body. Then we can connect the new positive sensations to the old problems and difficulties, changing them by eliminating the fear, anger and/or sadness that we felt. There are many other ways of changing the negative pathways in our brain. Most of the time people I work with find this kind of approach, when it’s appropriate, is very subtle, bringing about desired changes without great effort or angst. Best of all, the changes last over time because the brain has learned to use new neural pathways that lead to positive emotions, thoughts and feelings.

It seems Elaine had called the very people who had contacted me a few weeks ago and they came in and adopted the sweet little girl on the spot. I looked up to the heavens with a big smile on my face and whispered a silent prayer of thanks. “I should have known better. I may fall down on the job now and then, but You never do,” I said. For those of you who read last week’s column, a quick update. Jewel is now running around and playing with a whole group of dogs at Dogwood Farms. I literally wept with joy when I saw her playfully interacting for the first time.
It seems all who meet her just love her, even the other dogs. Her problems remain but there has been noticeable improvement. Thanks again to my angel who is still paying for her meds and to Dr. Jones who is paying for her special vitamins and who left a nice donation for her care at Dogwood Farms. He also supports Lennie’s kids every chance he gets. Bless them all. Blossom, the beautiful AmStaff, has found a home, much thanks to Josh. Muffin is doing okay but prefers women to men. She ignores Josh and even myself but sits and looks up with loving attention when Astrid (Josh’s lovely wife) tends to her. Bojangles had his leg removed and the operation went beautifully, the leg is gone but the purr machine remains in tact. Bo also has a home and will be joining two other little white tripods as soon as he heals up. Elaine also had a hand in this adoption, she’s on a roll. Fresh off last week’s dominating win over Madison, Polk County will take their perfect conference record on the road this evening, heading up the mountain to Yancey County for a showdown with the Cougars of Mountain Heritage High School. Although the Cougars were shut out 27-0 in their conference opener at Hendersonville last week, Polk head coach Bruce Ollis is quick to note that a road trip to Burnsville is rarely a cakewalk. “All conference games are huge, but the Mountain Heritage game seems to have morphed into something bigger,” said Polk head coach Bruce Ollis. “We feel like we should be in the hunt for a conference title most seasons, and Coach Robinson has their program where they are a force to be reckoned with in the WHC every year.” The Wolverines and Cougars have shared the last two Western Highlands Conference titles. Mountain Heritage runs a Wing-T attack out of the shotgun, an offense that can be very deceptive because of all the faking and misdirection. Even though the Cougars are primarily a ground-based team, with a 3-1 run to pass ratio, Ol-
lis notes that the effectiveness of their run game sets up the potential for home run passes off play action. “They run a multitude of formations offensively, so we have put in a lot of preparation time on defense as a result,” said Ollis. The Cougars will be led by middle linebacker Austin Rice, the Western Highlands Conference defensive player of the year. Rice and his teammates will have their hands full attempting to contain an explosive Polk County offense that has already found the end zone 19 times. Wolverine quarterback Alec Philpott (19 for 31, 436 yards, 3 TDs) will have a multitude of offensive weapons at his disposal, including Cary Littlejohn (64 carries for 453 yards and 9 TDs), Jay Sutton (30 carries for 147 yards and 2 TDs) and Joel Booker (16 catches for 335 yards and 3 TDs). “This [MHHS] is a program that is just two seasons removed from playing for a state championship, so we will get their best effort, and we will have to play as well as possible to come back to Columbus with a victory.” The action begins tonight at 7:30 under the lights at Mountain Heritage High School in Burnsville.

This little piggy went to storytime Preschoolers had fun at a piggy storytime recently at the Polk County Public Library in Columbus. After reading lots of pig stories, reciting lots of pig rhymes and fingerplays, kids created their own pudgy porker using shiny red apples and gumdrops. Preschool storytime is held each Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the Columbus library and at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday in the Saluda Library. (article and photos submitted by Joy Sharp)
