Wolverines aim to build on past success by Daniel Hecht

Last season, Polk County head football coach Bruce Ollis’ challenge to his team was clear – to advance beyond the second round of the state playoffs – and the talent-rich Wolverines, led by senior quarterback Andre Overholt, answered the bell, upending East Rutherford and advancing to the third round for the first time in the school’s history. When asked what goals he has laid out for this year ’s squad, and how he intended to top 2010, Ollis replied that the objective was very simple – to still be playing football in December. “I’ve told the team, ‘let’s play for two more weeks. We had an incredible season last year, winning 12 games, and making it to the third round of the playoffs,” said Ollis. “Our guys have had a taste of that success, and they want to get back to that level, and even go beyond that level.” This season’s mantra is “Wolverine Way” – an acknowledgement of the price paid, and the groundwork laid, by those young men that have come before the current crop of athletes. “I’ve told our guys that Wolverine Way is a tradition that was started by young men long before them, a tradition that is to be carried on by them – that the torch has been passed,” explained Ollis. “I remind these young men that they represent the Wo l v e r i n e s i n e v e r y t h i n g they do.” According to Ollis, junior Alec Philpott is the frontrunner to take over for Overholt at quarterback, with backup provided by sophomore Reece Schlabach. “I feel very confident that we have two good players in Alec and Reece,” said Ollis.

“They are both very talented athletes and I am confident that they will come through for us.” Ollis expects that Schlabach will see significant playing time at both receiver and defensive back, while Philpott commands the offense. Philpott will spearhead an offensive attack that will likely be more ground focused than in recent years, owing in large part to the blazing speed of the Wolver-

ine backfield. “I really think we’ve got the three fastest players in the conference in Cary Littlejohn, Joel Booker and Tyler Ridings,” said Ollis. “When we timed our forties, Cary ran a 4.34, Joel a 4.39, and Tyler a 4.44. Normally you’re fortunate to have one guy that quick, and we’ve got three.” The offensive line will again be anchored by all-conference senior Caleb Wilson, who will start at center for the third consecutive year.

“Caleb is going to be one of the best offensive linemen in the conference this season,” said Ollis. “He’s the biggest and strongest he’s ever been – he power cleans 280 and runs a 4.79.” Wi l s o n , c o m i n g o f f o f shoulder surgery, is expected to emerge as a team leader for the Wolverines. “Caleb has really stepped up from a leadership standpoint,” said Ollis. “He sees (Continued on page 6)

himself in that role, and that’s very important.” J a c o b P a i n t e r, G a b r i e l Mingorance, Chase McMurray and Todd Yoder will flank Wilson, with backup by Chase Harris and Tyler Johnson. D e f e n s i v e l y, e x p e c t a t i o n s are high, especially on the front line. “I think we’ve got the opportunity to have the best defensive front around,” remarked Ollis. “Markece Cunningham may be the best contain tackle in the area and Jacob Painter will replace Tyler Philpott at anchor tackle.” All conference senior Jay Sutton, widely regarded as the best nose guard in the conference, may move to linebacker to address a lack of depth caused by the departure of Juan Hicks and JJ

Maxwell, but Ollis is quick to note that the jury is still out on that decision. “ We ’ v e g o t s o m e o t h e r guys – Lucas Williams, Jaylon Twitty – that can play well for us there, and we’re taking a look at a couple of true freshman at linebacker, Tyler Jackson and Damion Cantrell, who will have an opportunity to be varsity football players.” The defensive backfield will be anchored by the fleet-footed quartet of Ridings, Booker, Philpott and Anthony Carson. One thing seems certain – no team will have outworked, or out-prepared, the 2011 Wolverines. “We have had a great summ e r, ” s a i d O l l i s . “ We ’ v e worked awfully hard, the kids have gotten in great shape, we’ve gotten stronger, we’ve been very productive in our (Continued on page 7)

passing league experiences, and we’ve built a lot of confidence as a result of that.” Ollis and his coaching staff look forward to taking the next step on Aug. 19 versus Tuscola under the lights at home. “Tuscola is a very talented team, a 3A school that we’ve

been fortunate to beat twice,” said Ollis. “I’m sure that they’ve circled this one on their calendar, and they’ll be looking to return the favor.”

Good luck Wolverines and Tigers!

PCHS Cadets take this year's show to the Vegas strip The Polk County Cadets are hitting the Vegas casinos this year. Parents don’t need to worry, though – band students won’t be gambling, although they will have a chance to bring home some prizes. The band competition show this year is titled, “Viva Las Vegas.” Musical selections include “Viva Las Vegas Fanfare,” “Luck Be a Lady,” “Poker Face,” “Shape of My Heart” and “Viva Las Vegas.” The musical arrangements and drill were created by Matt Putnam. “I am very excited about this year’s show,” band director Cindy Gilbert said. “The students think this Las Vegas theme and the music are fun and they are excited about playing the show.” The Cadets will take “Viva Las Vegas” to two competitions: • Low Country Invitational in Charleston on Oct. 1 (a three-day competition) • Marching competition at Mooresville High School on Oct. 15 “This is a very young group this year, but they are very talented, hard working and dedicated,” Gilbert said. “It takes a great deal of energy, drive and dedication to be able to get out in the sun five to eight hours a day for three weeks of band camp. I just wish the people could understand just

how nervous these students get when they go on the field to perform for them at a ball game or any other performance. They just want everyone to love the music and performance the way they love to perform it.” Jill Bennett is assistant director of the Cadets. Other staff members include Jody McCarn, guard; Joey and Benny Pullara, brass; Fred and Beryl Lemmons, woodwinds and Norman Moore, percussion.

This is going to be a wonderful season for all of us.”

Landrum Cardinals discover speed on offense by Joey Millwood

If there’s one thing a spread offense needs, it's lots of speed. A s p r e a d o ff e n s e i s d e signed to keep opposing defenses unsettled, stretched and just moving up and down the field quickly. Landrum football head coach Russell Mahaffey thinks he may have just that recipe this season. Defenses staring down the barrel of the Cardinal offense will see plenty of speed. That speed will begin with elusive senior quarterback Brandon Cannon. The senior has manned the Cardinal offense for the last four years and has a firm grasp of what he needs to do, Mahaffey said. “It’s a blessing to have a quarterback that knows what’s going on and is a good leader for our offense,” Mahaffey said. Cannon broke down defenses last season with his speed and ability to make tacklers miss. At one point he was even flagged for jumping a defender. Last season, Cannon threw for 2,008 yards and ran for 777. He’s a consistent dual threat that will keep opposing defenses honest. This season, it’s not just about his speed and his running ability, Cannon said. He wants to stay in the pocket more. And whether he’s in or out of the pocket, he likes the way the offense will look this season. “I feel like (the offense) is gonna look really well,” the senior said. The speed, however, doesn’t end with Cannon. The Cardinals have one of the deepest backfields that Mahaffey can remember. Cole McDowell returns after running for 1,004 yards last season and will anchor the

deep backfield that will include speedster Jojo Wilkins, Aaron Bryant and Jacob Gibson. At wide receiver the Cardinals will return Peyton McC a r t e r, w h o h a d 4 0 0 y a r d s rushing last season and 380 yards receiving. Jacob Lindsey, Clark Edmonds and transfer T.J. Fincher will round out a strong wide receiver corps. Alex Bryant will play tight end. “We have some very quick, skilled athletes (this season),”

“I think (this offense) has great potential. We definitely have the people for this to be our best offensive year. We have that potential.” -- Coach Russell Mahaffey

Mahaffey said. The offensive line will have a lot to protect this season. Landrum is returning the interior of its offensive line with Gus Wofford, Austin Howell and Matt Pace. Mahaffey felt

that the offensive line took steps forward in the team’s last scrimmage. “We’re going to continue to work hard on our offensive (Continued on page 16)

line,” Mahaffey said. “I think (this offense) has great potential. We definitely have the people for this to be our best offensive year. We have that potential.” When opposing offenses line up against Landrum this season, they’re going to be staring at a big defensive front. Alex Bryant, Nick Logan, J.P. Henderson and Chasten are all 220 lbs. and bigger and should give the defense a nice push. “They’re pretty strong up front,” Mahaffey said. While the defensive front might be the strongest part of the defense, the leader of the defense will be Kaleb Kuykendall. The senior is a coach on the field, Mahaffey said. In addition to being a leader, Kuykendall also brings one

other aspect he brings to the game that makes Mahaffey smile. “Kaleb is our hitter,” Mahaffey said. “He will hit you hard.” “I just keep looking for the big hit,” Kuykendall said. “I have good instincts for where the ball is gonna go.” On the other side of Kuykendall in the secondary will be Cannon. Alex Bryant will also be key personnel in the secondary. And while this defense has the potential to be a good one, Mahaffey said it’s going to take some constant growth. “We’re young on defense,” he said. “We have to continue to work. We’ve got the opportunity to be a pretty strong defense.” On special teams this year, Matt Pace will be handling the place-kicking duties and Cannon will be triple-timing as the punter.

Landrum band presents ‘A Boy and His Tiger’ by Barbara Tilly

The Landrum High School Cardinal Pride Band will take the field this year with “The Art of Friendship: A Boy and His Tiger,” a take-off on the well-known Calvin & Hobbes cartoon. According to band director Barry Bridwell, the show is a drama with a story line played out on the field between “Alvin” and “Dobbs,” his tiger. A recorded dialogue helps tell the story between musical numbers, which include: • “Critical Mass,” by Todd Stalter • An arrangement of “Into the West,” from the “Lord of the Rings” movies • An arrangement of the popular Owl City song “Fireflies” • “Pieces of Eight,” by Carolyn Bremer During the band’s two-week band camp, the group is divided into four teams that compete to see which team can accumulate the most points per day. The teams spend 20 minutes a day on team-building activities. “Their favorite is a version of four-way dodge ball played with water balloons,” Bridwell said. “The team with the most points each day gets to leave practice first. The last-place team has to pick up the trash.” Bridwell, who has been at Landrum High for 20 years and is a native of Spartanburg County,

writes the musical arrangements, the marching drill and the script for the band’s competition shows himself. He is assisted during afterschool marching band rehearsals by Natasha Mills, an adjunct staff member. Mills was a beginner band student during Bridwell’s first years at Landrum. She joined the marching band the following year and has been with the band

ever since, six years as a member, seven years as a volunteer staffer and six years as a paid assistant. Jessica Pym, who teaches at another District One school, also helps with the band on a part-time basis. This is her first year with the Cardinal Pride. This year’s band has 44 members plus two actors, who play Alvin and Dobbs in the show. “This is a big increase for

us,” said Bridwell. “We’re really excited about that.” The band includes 25 first-year marchers and many second-year members, Bridwell said; only 11 students have been in the band for more than two years. The group also includes 16 middle school students. “It’s a young band,” Bridwell said, “but it’s got a good sound. We should be in good shape.”

Young team ready to serve up offensive strength by Samantha Hurst

Just days before the Wolverine’s first serve in a scrimmage match against King’s Mountain Aug. 6, PCHS volleyball Coach Heather Clausen spoke to us about her excitement over helping a young team grow in a new season. T h i s w i l l b e C l a u s e n ’s fourth year leading the Lady Wolverines over the net. “We have no seniors this year but three returning juniors who played on varsity last year, along with three more juniors who will also join our team this year,” Clausen said. “We always hope to improve every year, and I think this year’s team is willing to work hard to make it their best season yet.” Clausen said offensively

this team will be the smallest she’s coached, but she believes a few key players will make up for what the team lacks in size. One of those players is junior Savannah Deaver. Deaver will play middle for the team. “Savannah is quick, smart and willing to do whatever it takes to dominate her position,” Clausen said. “We have a lot of positions we’re still working on figuring out yet. “I feel we will be very strong defensively and get some balls up we haven’t in past years.” Clausen said it is hard to say who the team’s strongest competition will be this year, as the Wolverines will play a lot of new (Continued on page 29)

Brighter future for young Landrum volleyball team by Leah Justice

Finishing third in the conference last year, the Landrum varsity volleyball team is looking for a brighter future this season despite having a young team. Coach Denise Riske, entering her sixth year of coaching the Lady Cardinals, said she has four seniors returning this year, but her leading setter is eighth grader Aubree Denton. This is Denton’s first year playing varsity, and Coach Riske said she is very capable. “She is more than capable of stepping in. She’s very coachable, smart and is court savvy,” Riske said. Denton is not the only younger player the coach is looking to be a leader for the Cardinals this year. Carla Bruce and Holly Rickett, both sophomores, are the (Continued on page 32)

lead hitters. Rickett started last year as a freshman. Becca Burress, a junior, has stepped up as the voice on the court, Riske said. The Lady Cardinals showed promise against several, much larger schools last Thursday, Aug. 11 in a scrimmage. Riske said she was pleased with her players’ effort against some powerhouse teams such as Hillcrest, Daniel, Wade Hampton, Pickens and Boiling Springs. “I was pleased overall,” Riske said. “We did very well considering the size of the schools.” This year’s team is looking to go further this year than last despite losing nationally ranked setter Lydia Givens. Givens is attending the S.C. Governor’s School this year. Givens was the team captain as a sophomore at Landrum.

“Everyone’s stepped up and worked hard,” Riske said. “We’ve already exceeded where we were last year.” Riske said one reason she feels this year will be more successful is because of how well the players get along on and off the court. They attended camp together this summer as well as participating in lock-ins. “More talented teams have been beaten by harder working teams,” said Riske. “These girls have a lot of heart and support each other.” This year’s team consists of seniors Kelsey Spicer, Rebecca Hardin, Haley Burns, Brandy Pace; juniors Burress, Meagin Painter and Gabby Griggs; sophomores Bruce and Rickett and eighth-grader Denton. Landrum will scrimmage against Hillcrest Thursday, Aug. 25 at Hillcrest and at Dorman on Aug. 25. The Lady Cardinals are scheduled for a tournament at Byrnes High School on Aug. 27.

Polk County soccer looks to retake top spot in WHC It is said that in sports, as with any worthwhile pursuit, the only thing harder than making it to the top is staying there. In the world of high school athletics, maintaining a top-ranked program year after year is even more of a challenge, given a raw and ever-changing pool of talent. Despite these long odds, the Polk County men’s soccer program has, for the better part of the past decade, dominated the Western Highlands Conference, posting seven consecutive seasons with at least a share of the 2A/1A conference championship.

So when the team finished last season in third place with a winning, though less than stellar, 10-8-3 overall record, and were treated to an early exit in the first round of the playoffs, some questioned if the magic had disappeared from the Wolverines soccer program. According to head coach Lennox Charles, nothing could be further from the truth. “I just think that other teams last season may have caught up with us in terms of talent,” said Charles. “When we started, we had more guys (Continued on page 35)

Now that Owen and Hendersonville have a bunch of kids playing club soccer, they have caught up somewhat.” Charles also points out that the Wolverines schedule included an abundance of ultra-tough non-conference opponents, including TC Roberson, Asheville, Highlands and last year ’s state champion Shelby. Indeed, though the Wolverines finished just above .500 overall, the team posted a strong 9-3-2 conference record, with just one loss to Owen and two losses to a top-notch Hendersonville squad that finished undefeated in conference play. According to Charles, Abril and Arrington, both all-conference and allregion players, are a force to be reckoned with. “Lee and Davie should be the most dangerous combination we have going into the season,” said Charles, adding that he hopes to use Arrington, traditionally a defender, in a forward position complementing Abril. Expectations sky high for Polk County tennis this fall by Daniel Hecht

Polk County Head Coach Joel Picher is undeniably bullish about the prospects for his Lady Wolverines tennis team this year And why not? With as many as 16 players expected to turn out for the team this season, many of whom will be playing in their third consecutive campaign, Picher’s optimism is clearly justified. While Polk County’s program may have been considered second tier in seasons past, Picher believes his 2011 squad matches up favorably with any team in the conference, and perhaps any team in the mountains. “We‘re finally moving up in our ability level,” said Picher. “I have three strong seniors that are definitely going to be holding the team up on their shoulders,

plus a couple of new girls from middle school that are surprising me, ones that I think will add a lot of strength to the team.” Senior Natalie Hilbig returns to the team this year and, according to Picher, will likely assume the No. 1 spot, with senior Jessica Pullara and sophomore Hannah High rounding out a strong top three. Alli Halbkat, a much-improved sophomore with strong potential, is back as well, as are juniors Naomi Bentley and Alison Hunter and seniors Emily Antonio and Rachel Vining. Newcomer Bekka Woodaman, a sophomore, figures to add an extra dimension of talent as well. “It’s going to be interesting – I think this season is probably going to be our best season,

“This is one season I am really pumped about. It will be really interesting to see where it goes.” -- Coach Joel Picher

that’s my prediction – and I feel comfortable saying that, based on what I have seen this summer and knowing what I am up against with some of the other teams that we are going to play.” Sophomores Mackenzie McCool, Jamie Greene, Kimberly Russell, Stephanie Pace, Shyanne Dennison and Kristen Wade, along with freshmen Genevieve Gary and Alivia Livesay, round out the squad. “This is one season I am really pumped about,” said Picher. “It will be really interesting to see where it goes.”

New tennis coach all too familiar with Cardinal tennis by Joey Millwood

Savannah Martin was one half of the Raaum Sisters. She and her sister, Sierra, were the No. 1 doubles team for the Lady Cardinals. The two played together in Martin’s last two years of high school. Martin, however, played on the tennis team from 1998 until 2002. She was on the team as an eighth grader. Martin knows what it takes to have a successful season and in her first year as Landrum’s coach, she’s working her team out in the preseason and is appreciating what she’s seeing. “I feel that we will have an awesome team, who has been conditioning and running three days out of the week and also still playing tennis after conditioning,” Martin said. “I am very proud of these girls. They have worked hard over the past couple of weeks and I look for a winning season.” This year the Cardinals will have a mix of young and veteran players. Emily Dill and Mireyas Campuzano

will be playing this season as seventh graders. The two are CampobelloGramling School students. Rina Davenport and Megan Barnwell are both ninth graders. Katherine Carruth is a sophomore. Sierra Wiley and Sherly Kaur are both seniors. Dill, Campuzano and Davenport are all new to the team this season. The Cardinals had two graduates from last season, including No. 2 seed Emily Gowan. However, sophomore Lindsay Wilson will be returning. Wilson played No. 1 seed last season. “I’m very thrilled and excited to be working with this group of girls,” Martin said. “I hope for a wonderful season of tennis if the hot weather would calm down.” Members of the team include: eventh-graders Emily Dill and Mireyas Campuzano; ninth-grader Megan Barnwell; sophomores Katherine Carruth, Lindsay Wilson and Rina Davenport; and seniors Sierra Wiley and Sheryl Kaur.

Wolverines running after conference championship Coach anticipates strong showing from seasoned girls by Samantha Hurst

With seven seniors returning for the 2011 season, Polk County cross-country coach Alan Peoples anticipates a strong showing. “Most of our top seven girls will be seasoned runners and we intend to make a run for the conference championship and qualify for state,” Peoples said. “On the boys side we are also shooting for the conference; the possible problem here could be inexperience. Most of our team will be underclassmen; however, we still expect to make a run to qualify for state.” In 2010 the Wolverine boys were third in the conference,

while the girls came in fourth. Ricky Mozqueda won the conference, was the conference runner of the year, and qualified for state. Rebecca Elliot was thirteenth in the conference, and she was a state qualifier. While Mozqueda graduated this past May, Elliot will return along with other senior runners Andy Conner, Jamie Hrobak, Anna Koenig, Casey McDowell, William Morse and Sam Vining. Peoples said Elliot will lead the female Wolverines after coming off of a win for the women’s 4x400 relay win at the state outdoor track competition and a personal third place finish in the 800-meter. “Her strength is that she has trained hard all summer and is in better shape now than she was at the end of last season,” Peoples said. “In the words of another

coach, 'Becca is hungry!'" Other girls to look for, People said, are Casey McDowell, Mary Christiansen and Nancy Silva. Meanwhile, on the boys side, Andy Conner is the early pick to be a state qualifier. Conner had a strong outdoor season last spring, running a 51.1 400 meter and a 2:01 4 x 800 relay leg. There are several boys that could move up in the mix as well, Peoples said. Those include Bruce Butler, Jacob Collins and Kelby Orr. Assistant coaches Cathy Elliott, Jenny Wolfe and DeWayne

Elliott met with students the entire summer on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday each week for voluntary running at Harmon Field, Stearns and Screven’s Bottom. Peoples also took six of the team members to a running camp at Brevard College. “We ran or exercised twice a day. The runs were mostly in the Pisgah Forest and Dupont Forest,” Peoples said. “While there they learned diet, racing strategy, goal setting, off season training, leadership and how to stay healthy while running long miles in the heat.”

Cardinals set off running after further success by Joey Millwood

The Landrum boys’ cross country team can safely be called a dynasty now. Head coach Jeremy Darby and his assistants have built a 1A powerhouse and the girls’ team is hoping to start a dynasty of their own. The Cardinals have won three straight cross country state championships and Darby is excited about the prospects of a fourth this season. On the girls’ side, the Lady Cardinals won their first state championship last season under Darby. The boys are returning key runners Danny Bruce, Phil Salle and Mick Prather. All three placed in the top 20 last season at the state finals. Bruce finished 12 th and is recovering from an offseason knee injury, but Darby expects him to bounce back in time.

Troy Hodge will make his debut for the Cardinals this season and Darby sees a lot of potential in his youngest runner. The Cardinals will have to reload after losing key runners Kenneth Human, J.J. Carruth, Chris Downey, Levi Wedde and Jacob Smith. “The boys are definitely a younger team with many who will be running varsity for the first time,” Darby said. “However, I think our depth and our new talent will keep us in the title hunt.” The Lady Cardinals are in prime shape to repeat as state champions. The Lady Cardinals didn’t lose a runner from last year’s team. Samantha Waters finished second in the state meet last year and will return to anchor the team. Sarah Cash finished third last season in the

state meet. Elizabeth Walter finished 10th in the state finals and has logged more miles of running this offseason than anyone else. “The girls definitely have the talent to win state,” Darby said. “For the girls’ team to be the complete package, I need a leader to arise from the group. My girls' teams have always lacked in leadership and the coach can’t be the only leader. I need one or two of my girls to take charge of their destiny.” For the boys’ team to win a fourth straight, Darby points to one particular thing. “I think the guys are going to need to buy into their own

hype,” he said. “They have worked hard over the summer through our conditioning program and have the mileage base. Now they just need to realize how good they can be. I’m not sure if they realize how much potential they have even though I tell them daily.” Darby was named the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year in all classifications last season, but he deflects all recognition to his teams. “I’m excited about the season and very blessed with two good teams that are very likely to enjoy a lot of success this season,” he said.

Everybody’s Talking… When hip pain forced the former Cincinnati Bengals and Pickens High School football Coach Sam Wyche off the sidelines, the football legend was scheduled for surgery in a large teaching hospital with “leading” surgeons. But he felt lost in the system. “Those surgeons never communicated with me and it was making me a little nervous. I checked around, heard about Dr. Rosenberg and his anterior approach to hip surgery so I made the trip to Polk County. I’d never heard of St. Luke’s Hospital, but I had a firstrate experience. I can’t say enough good stuff about it.” Now he’s telling everyone he knows. Whether he’s coaching the quarterback or signing autographs, Sam Wyche is back in the game of life.
