Davis completes zoning certification course Joey Davis, fire chief and Code Enforcement Officer for the Town of Tryon, has successfully completed the zoning certification course offered by the N.C. Association of Zoning Officials and the UNC School of Government. This course is designed for local zoning officials in the planning and zoning field who are involved in interpreting and enforcing local zoning ordinances. Participation in the course promotes continuing professional development and enhances the stature of the zoning official’s performance and professional image, according to the state association. Zoning officers may apply for the certification exam after on-the-job experience as a zoning official and must complete the Introduction to Zoning Course before they can sit for

the class. Certification involves 30 hours of instruction spread over two weeks of in-class training. At the end of the course, the student must pass an exam involving 30 questions, scenarios or multiple choice options. Davis passed the exam, which requires a passing score of at least 21 out of the 30 questions to receive certification as a North Carolina Certified Zoning Official. After the initial five years of certification, eight hours of credit must be earned every two years to maintain certification. “This is not an easy certification to obtain. Joey certainly put forth a great deal of time and effort. We are very proud of his accomplishment,” said Justin Hembree, Tryon’s town manager. – article submitted by Meg Rogers

county’s bottom line. The report also states that the county withheld $6,900 in liquidated damages because the building was not completed on time. Contractors were fined $300 per day for every day past Nov. 14, the contract end date that a certificate of occupancy was not obtained. P o l k C o u n t y ’s o r i g i n a l construction contract was $1,590,755. The contract amount was reduced to $1,529,609 due to change orders, according to Cannon’s report. Total change orders reduced the contract amount by $9,474 and the project only used $4,073 out of the allowed $48,845 contingency. The new building, located off Wolverine Trail on county-owned property in Mill Spring is 11,971 square feet. The final reduced contract amount of $1,529,609 results in a final building cost per square feet of $127.78, according

to Cannon’s report. The final cost per square foot is $5.10 per square foot less than the original contract building cost of $132.88 per square foot, which equates to a 3.83 percent reduction in the cost of the work, Cannon said. Polk County’s contractors were Able Constructors. Including construction costs and other expenses, such as grading and architectural work, the total project was originally estimated at $1,914,052. Polk approved financing up to $1.8 million to help pay for the building. The county will receive state and federal reimbursements for the building, with more than $95,000 expected back this fiscal year. State and federal reimbursements will be received over the building’s expected life of 45 years at a 61 percent reimbursement rate. Early estimates were that the county over the long run would have spent $750,000 for the building after 45 years of reimbursements.

Polk extension taking orders for small fruit plant sale The Polk County Extension Center will begin taking orders in its annual small fruit plant sale on Tuesday, Jan. 3. This sale is a fundraiser that supports programs of the local extension center. “Small fruits are a welcome addition to any sunny home garden,” Polk extension director John Vining said. “They are relatively easy to grow and offer top quality fresh fruit over a long period.” The most popular of all small fruits grown at home is blueberries, Vining said, with strawberries falling close behind. Rabbiteye blueberries are the best adapted type of blueberry for Polk County, Vining said. They are more tolerant of different soil types, plus they

are more drought and heat resistant. Ten plants should furnish enough fruit for a family of four. Climax, Premier, Tifblue, Powder Blue, Brightwell and Columbus are the varieties available for sale. Vining reminds gardeners that at least two different varieties are needed to ensure adequate pollination. Vining recommends setting your blueberries 6 feet apart when transplanting. The type of strawberries available are considered matted-row plants. These plants are not grown on plastic like lots of commercial berries today. Matted-row strawberries are planted 2 feet apart in rows 4 feet apart. Normally 100 plants are enough to supply the typical family with fruit.

Available in 2012 are Earliglow and Galletta strawberries. Both are flavorful, perfect for the home garden, Vining said. Galletta is a new release from N.C. State University. The extension center will offer for the second year red raspberry plants for local gardeners. The two varieties chosen are Josephine and Nantahala, two cultivars selected for this area. Both are everbearing raspberries, meaning they will bear fruit at two different times (June and September) during the growing season. Nantahala is a brand new release from N.C. State University. These plants will come bareroot so prepare your planting area before the plants are delivered in March. For more information, con-

Cardinals narrowly lose to Byrnes in Battle at the Border by Joey Millwood

Landrum roared back in the second half of the Battle at the Border championship, but it wasn’t quite enough to win. The showdown with 4A Byrnes started off a little slow for the Cardinals as they fell behind by 10 early on. After a long struggle, Landrum found its stride, and with 5.2 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Cole McDowell darted down the court, ditched his defender and hit a layup to tie the game at 59-59. After a time out, Byrnes guard Shy Williams took the ball, streaked up the court and as the buzzer sound, the senior released a running jump shot in the paint that sunk the Cardinals’ hopes of winning their first tournament championship since the very first one 12 years ago. Byrnes won a dramatic 61-59 victory. “He hit a tough shot,” Landrum coach Lyn Smith said. “I felt like we defended it well.” For Williams, it all went by so fast that all he could remember was the emotion after. “I was joyful, happy that we won,” Williams said. Williams finished the game with a team-high ten points. The last-second shot was needed because Landrum had just com-

pleted a comeback from ten points down at the half. The Rebels maintained a 10-point lead throughout the game before the Cardinals began chipping away at it. The rebels were balanced on offense across the board. Williams was the only Rebel in double-digits. Malik Brewton, Keith Anderson and Syverio Jones all had nine points. With just under a minute to play, Mark Wilson hit a three-pointer to pull the Cardinals within two points at 59-57. The Rebels missed two free throws on the other end. That set up McDowell’s layup with 5.2 seconds left on the clock. It was a strong run by the Cardinals, but Byrnes coach Fowler saw something different in his team on Friday night. The Rebels haven’t had a lot of leads this season, but they protected this one. “They gave us a good punch in the second half,” Fowler said. “We withstood it.” For Smith, it was just a matter of his team stepping up and going toe-to-toe with Byrnes. “They were bigger,” Smith said. “They were more physical. We never folded. We didn’t run from anybody.” The Cardinals were led by McDowell and Daniel Bridges. Both had 14 points.

Landrum girls make comeback in second round of Battle by Joey Millwood

On Wednesday, Dec. 28, Landrum coach Deon Brice talked about his team’s inability to put four quarters together. On Thursday, the Lady Cardinals answered the call, beating Spartanburg Christian Academy 44-27. Landrum dominated SCA from start to finish on Wednesday afternoon in the second

round of the Battle at the Border tournament. The Lady Cardinals got it done with a balanced offense. Landrum was led by Lauren Pitts, who hit three 3-pointers for 9 points. Landrum got off to a slow start, but took off in the second quarter. Macy Atkins hit two straight shots and Skylar Henderson followed with two straight baskets to jump out on

an 8-0 run at the start of the second quarter. The Lady Cardinals were up 10 at the half 25-15. Henderson and Atkins finished the game with 8 points each. Landrum got it started on the defensive side of the ball. The perimeter defenders stepped up and put pressure on the SCA guards. Taylor Jenkins stepped up on defense in the paint.

“I think our defense helped get our offense going,” Brice said. “That loosened us up enough to get us in our half court set.” Brice said he is hoping his team can build momentum on this win for the rest of the tournament and the upcoming region schedule. “It just came together today,” he said. Landrum will play Chapman at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6.

Polk faces disappointing loss to Chesnee in Battle by Joey Millwood

After Polk County coach Craig Culbreth emerged from the locker rooms on Friday, Dec. 30, the coach could only shake his head. The Lady Wolverines had just lost to Chesnee 61-57 in the final round of the Battle at the Border tournament in Landrum. It wasn’t your usual loss. Polk came out in the first half and dominated the Lady Eagles. In fact, the Lady Wolverines were up by 24 points at the half. That 37-13 lead, however, evaporated as Chesnee came out on fire behind the threepoint arc. Jasia Martin hit six 3-pointers in the second half for Chesnee to lead the Lady Eagles back. “You think you got the game

won,” Culbreth said. “Instead of folding up, they got hot as a firecracker.” Polk County’s offense slowed down in the second half, which allowed the Lady Eagles to avoid the trap from the Lady Wolverines that had been so effective in the first half. Savannah Deaver led the way for Polk County with 13 points. Jamie Hrobak added 12. Both had a strong tournament for the Lady Wolverines. The ending for the Lady Wolverines was disappointing, but there was a lesson to be learned from the loss, Culbreth said. “That [was just one of those games] that I just don’t know what to say,” he said. “It just shows you how you should never quit.”

Also features work by local musician Mark Schweizer Although the musicians will be local, Foothills Music Club’s biennial concert will have an international flavor, featuring music by French, German, Spanish, French-Canadian and American composers. The concert, to be presented at the Polk campus of Isothermal Community College at 3 p.m. on Jan. 12, will begin with an American composition. A women’s chorus composed of club members, led by Rita Stobbe, will perform an original arrangement by Tryon composer Mark Schweizer of “Simple Gifts,” originally written by Shaker elder Joseph Brackett Jr. in 1848. Schweizer, who has a doctorate in vocal music, directed the

Carolina Community Chorus in its recent holiday concert, which featured a number of Schweizer’s arrangements of Christmas music. The title of his collection of arrangements including “Simple Gifts” reflects his sense of humor: “The Sunday Morning Absolutely One Rehearsal Anthem Book for About 10 Panicked Singers.” It provides a church choral director with enough anthems for a whole year. Going overseas to France for the next song will be Ann Morgan and Carole Bartol, playing the piano with four hands in a performance of Gabriel Faure’s “Berceuse” from his Dolly Suite. One of the foremost French composers of his generation (1845-1924), Faure’s harmonic and melodic innovations affected the teaching of harmony for later (Continued on page 21)

Schweizer: Singer, composer/arranger, publisher and author While Schweizer is first and foremost a musician and has sung in operas across America, he is also a publisher. His first book, written in 1986, was a collection of instrumental arrangements of 100 hymns in the public domain for the organ and church orchestra. Each hymn included all the parts, as well as descants for trumpets and flute. While he used new software available to print the musical transcriptions, he still had to enter every note by hand. He had a friend who owned a print shop, who tackled the tricky job of producing this large book. Then Schweizer acquired a list of 25,000 Episcopal, Presbyterian, Lutheran and Methodist churches and sent out a brochure. In the years since that marketing push more than 10,000 copies of the book have been sold – and St. James Music Press was born. Many Polk County fiction readers know that Schweizer is also a novelist. In 2002, he published his first murder mystery, “The Alto Wore Tweed.” Its success encouraged him to write a second, then a third and soon he had 11 titles. After all, he had a marketing machine going in his music business. He does admit, however, “When I recently had to read ‘The Alto Wore Tweed’ for an audio book I wasn’t as happy with it as I was early on. I’m pretty critical of my own stuff and I think I’ve gotten a lot better over the years. And I’ve gotten better editors.”

Tryon area Plein Air Society to hold two paint-outs per month The Tryon Plein Air Society (TAPAS) will hold two paintouts per month in 2012, on both the first and third Saturdays of each month. All area painters are encouraged to attend either or both sessions. January’s Paint-Out events will be held on Saturday, Jan. 7 and Saturday, Jan. 21 in Tryon at 1 p.m. In fair weather, the group will meet on Melrose Avenue at

the Green Corner Park (with the gazebo) and from there choose area scenes for painting. If the weather is not good, TAPAS painters will meet at the Congregational Church on Melrose Ave. for indoor painting. “En plein air” is a French expression that means “in the open air” and is used to describe outdoor painting, which has been in vogue since the time of

the Impressionists. If you are a painter (beginner, advanced, or professional) who would like to paint outdoors, the Tryon Area Plein Air Society is continuing the tradition and welcomes new members. In addition to participating in and promoting plein air painting, TAPAS is intended to connect members with one another as painting companions and to pro-

vide opportunities to paint local landscapes outdoors. The group also promotes community awareness of plein-air painting through exhibits and the organization of paint-outs. a German composer, will be sung by a quartet made up of Pam McNeil, Karen Molnar, Carole Bartol and Jeanette Shackelford. The international theme will continue with Spanish guitarist Francisco Calleja’s composition “Cancion Triste” (“Sad Song”) and French-Canadian composer Marc Belanger’s “Jardin Secret” for classical guitar, both played by guitarist Amy Brucksch. Four sketches from “Cool” in

“West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein and Gordon Jacobs brings the focus to America’s famous musical about two gangs in New York City, as interpreted by Karen Molnar on the bassoon and Carole Bartol on the piano. Cole Porter’s classic “In the Still of the Night,” introduced to American audiences by Nelson Eddy in the 1937 film “Rosalie,” will be sung by Jeri Board, accompanied by Warren Board on

the piano and percussionists Pam McNeil and Carole Bartole. The international flavor then will return with “The Swan,” from the “Carnival of the Animals” by Camille Saint-Saens, a French composer, followed by “Bourree,” by W.H. Squire. Both will be played by Kathleen Foster, cello, accompanied by Mimi Child Traxler, piano. – article submitted by Les Stobbe

Sciacca speaks to Kiwanis Club Kiwanis Club member Janet Sciacca (right), shown here beside Sue Wilson of the Kiwanis Club, recently spoke to the club about the Carolina Foothills Chamber of Commerce. Sciacca is the executive director of the chamber, which helps visitors and residents with local maps, accommodations, phone books and other resources for local information. According to Sciacca, the first chamber in the community was started in 1927, and since that time it has actively promoted local businesses, especially with the “Think Global, Buy Local” campaign in recent years. The chamber also facilitates business leadership training and opportunities by way of seminars in collaboration with Isothermal Community College. Sciacca said joining the chamber helps businesses enhance their chance of success with networking events, a membership directory and promotions such as website listings and ribbon cutting ceremonies. The Chamber Foundation gives grants to area organizations every April. Once a year awards are given to those providing leadership and volunteer service to the goals of the chamber.
