For new construction, alterations to existing buildings, or moving of buildings within the city limits of Columbus, Saluda, Tryon or Tryon’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, a zoning permit is required from the Town Hall within that town. Landowners outside an incorporated town should check with the county Building Inspection Department. SIGN PERMITS

DRIVER’S LICENSES

The Driver’s License Bureau in Columbus is located inside the Polk County Tax and Tag office, located at 51 Walker Street, Columbus on various Thursdays from 9- a.m.-4 p.m. Dates can be found at polknc.org under the license plate agency tab, at ncdot.gov/dmv or by calling 919-715-7000.

Other locations include: Hendersonville: 125 Baystone Dr., Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m.-5 p.m., 828-692-6915. Forest City: 596 Withrow Rd., 828-248-1121.

LICENSE PLATES, REGISTRATION

Newcomers must obtain license plates and title within 45 days of moving to the state. Applicants must fill out a Form 400 and submit it with their current out-of-state title and a paid property tax receipt from the county in which they reside.
