The Gift of Shopping
Local
Contributed by Jenny Clark
Recent years have seen a cultural shift across the country toward shopping local—spending money in “mom and pop” businesses. Aside from a stronger local economy, the benefits realized include strengthened community—more involvement by merchants; increased social activity—and increased diversity in the personality of towns and in goods across the country, as a natural variety of regional favorites is more likely to be preserved. “Shop local!” has become a seasonal slogan in many of America’s small towns, particularly during the consumer hustle to the end of the year after Thanksgiving. While Black Friday is a perennial source of controversy, from disgruntled

employees on strike to good-natured ribbing between friends, the Saturday after Thanksgiving has emerged triumphant from the dust-up as Small Business Saturday. First promoted by American Express in 2010, the spirit of the “holiday” seems to have taken hold, and that public awareness is welcomed by small business owners and supporters. “These merchants are our neighbors,” says John Hastings, President of the Fountain Inn Chamber of Commerce. “Their kids and grandkids play and go to school with ours. It’s our duty to support these local businesses, the ‘backbone of America.’” We can order just about anything online these days or visit big box stores and come out with everything we need, and when convenience is king, those are choices that can make sense. But given the studied and proven benefits and the commonsense ones, it’s a valuable proposition, buying from the mom and pops as much as possible. Doing so puts the consumer in a position to help create local jobs, keep Main Streets alive in our small towns, reduce the environmental toll taken by sprawl, and avoid the “cookie cutter” atmosphere of strip mall companion stores. A personal benefit—this is a great way to get to know what’s going on behind the shop windows we drive past each day and cultivate a sense of rootedness for yourself and your family.

Giving Thanks Chaplain Bud Roberts | City of Simpsonville | Fire/Police Department For, after all, put it as we may to ourselves, we are all of us from birth to death guests at a table which we did not spread. The sun, the earth, love, friends, our very breath are parts of the banquet…. Shall we think of the day as a chance to come nearer to our Host, and to find out something of Him who has fed us so long? -Rebecca Harding Davis In America we celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November, but everyday for us should be a day of thanksgiving. We have so much to be thankful for, but spend so little time acknowledging it. Perhaps it takes a purer faith to praise God for unrealized blessings then
for those we once enjoyed now. -A.W. Tozer So I offer you a challenge this Thanksgiving Day! As you meet with family, friends, or whomever you spend the day with. 1. No smart phone, tablet, laptop, game boy or other such device. 2. Be genuine and caring, as you meet together. (Listen to one another, with love.) 3. Think of and pray for those that are not with you at this time. (Followed by a phone call to them to let them know you are missing, thinking of and praying for them.) Note: I did not say ‘text’ or ‘email’ them - CALL. 4. Don’t forget our military,
Police, Fire, EMS and Hospital staff that will be on duty to keep us all safe. Thank them if you get a chance, as they are always there for us. 5. Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18. Notice it says in ALL circumstances. As one of my favorite old Hymns says, for the God on the mountain is still God in the valley, when things go wrong, He’ll make it right. One last thing. Look around you for others that may be alone, as this time of year we call the “Holiday Season” can be very depressing. Talk with them, invited them for dinner, or

contact someone on their behalf. For reference on this, read Matthew 25:3446. Enough said! Let us pray. Heavenly Father, thank you that we can come before you at anytime, for anything, large or small. And that you hear our request. As we enter this Thanksgiving Day we thank you for this great country in which we live, and ask that you would continue to bless it, and restore it as “One Nation Under God.” Father, guide our leaders, and help them make decisions that would be pleasing to you, give them wisdom and guidance, we pray. Father we ask that you would bring a great awakening, across this land, shaking
even the churches to their foundation, so that we may get back to what our forefathers had envisioned, through your guidance, for this Nation. Father, keep a hedge of protection around those that protect and serve us, be they near or far from home, and we thank you for their service and dedication to us all. Father, bless our loved ones, this day, especially those that are not with us at this time, give them your peace and comfort. Father, we thank you for all that you do, and have in store for us, and we ask this in the name that is above all names, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

“Our Heritage comes from James Cannon, who is 85 years old to date. Mr. Cannon, his dad and grandfather served the community in funeral service dating back to 1879. To have the Cannon family’s experience, and their 135 year funeral service reputation, as a supporting business partner is invaluable. Mr. Cannon’s endorsement confirms, in my mind, that we are doing the business of funeral service the right way. Having Chuck Calvert, Director of Funeral Service, Carol Cannon Hopkins, a fourth generation family member, Ray Brown, Kirby and Thelma Ballew, Larry Couch, Ron and Joan Bridges, Angie Richardson and Jimmy Davis as staff members better positions us to serve local families with respected, long-term residents of this community. These individuals have served and held many positions of responsibility across our community for decades. I appreciate our staff that enable us to be attentive to the needs of families and the details associated with the service that we provide. We appreciate those that have entrusted us to have served their family. We are nearing the completion of our new Chapel. We invite you to come by to see it.”
Andy Byrd
Find comfort in the experience that our Heritage provides and in our promise to treat your family today the way we would want our family treated.

Hand Washing Hygiene
More Holiday Fun in the Works...
From Pelham Medical Center
Beth Kelley Fann Simpsonville business owners are hard at work putting the finishing touches on even more holiday fun. On Friday, December 5 there will be a Downtown Customer Appreciation Stroll with beverages and nibbles for shoppers. Buddy Simpson will debut at the Simpsonville Christmas Parade. He’s new to Simpsonville so an introduction is coming! Follow us at Facebook.com/tsblocal to stay up to date!
Stop what you are doing; think back on your day. Did you pet your cat and then eat a sandwich without washing your hands first? Did you just wash dishes with an old sponge and then touch a doorknob?
Wash your hands:
Diseases are spread through everyday activities and germs. When you flush your toilet without closing it, germs can travel as far as six feet and land on your sink and toothbrush. Your kitchen sink has nearly 100,000 times the germs of that in your bathroom. That sponge you washed last night’s dishes with contains thousands of bacteria, which could include E. coli or salmonella.
• Before and after treating a cut or wound
During cold and flu season, it’s important to know how to practice good hygiene to stay in top health. Washing your hands frequently is the main way to avoid getting sick this winter. Practicing good hygiene leads to better health.

Hand washing can reduce the risk of respiratory infections by 16 percent. It is also estimated that washing hands with soap and water could reduce diarrheal disease-associated deaths by up to 50 percent and routine hand washing could prevent millions of deaths a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A large percentage of foodborne disease outbreaks are spread by contaminated hands. Appropriate hand washing practices can reduce the risk of foodborne illness and other infections, according to the CDC. So how can I stay clean and free of illness?
