The Rams defeated Fort Dorchester 20-0 on Friday, November 28. Photos by Stephen Moore - smooregems.smugmug.com ©2014
Community Stands Behind Rams Jacob Wilson The Hillcrest Rams square off against the Dutch Fork Silver Foxes in the Class AAAA Division I state championship game at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia at 6 pm on Saturday. Hillcrest has produced several NFL players including Jamon Meredith, Travelle Wharton, Thomas Dendy, and the late James Seawright. Excluding the 2013 and 2104 seasons, the Rams’ football program has been lacking in two departments: consistency and championships. One thing that Hillcrest has been able to count on over the years is support from the community. Although Fountain Inn and Simpsonville are two distinct communities, the towns come together to sport their red and black on Friday nights in the fall. That community support was exhibited and Friday’s 20-0 win over Fort Dorchester. Between 300 and 500 fans made the 3 hour plus trek to North Charleston. “The number of fans at game was amazing, but the phone calls, texts, tweets all week was unbelievable,” said Hillcrest Athletic Director Tommy Bell. “Our community support has been tremendous for all sports but I think so many believed football could not achieve this so they want to see it first hand!” “It was emotional for the players and me to see that type of support,” Hillcrest coach Greg Porter said. “We knew parents would be there. We weren’t sure who else would be there because it was Thanksgiving weekend and such a long trip
down to Fort Dorchester. It meant a lot to me to see that type of support. The fans sacrificed time and money to make the trip. It encouraged our players and our coaches to see so many alumni and students. It gave the kids inspiration. We didn’t want to let our fans down.” The Quest for Championships and Consistency When Greg Porter accepted the head coaching position at Hillcrest, he wanted to build a football program that the community could be proud of. He has done just that, but it has not been easy. The Rams struggled in 2011 chalking up a 2-9 record. However, Hillcrest’s c-team squad posted an undefeated record. Almost all of the Rams key contributors on this year’s team played crucial roles in that team’s success. “We saw their talent early on,” said Porter. “If I could hold onto the job, if the athletic department and fans would give us time, we’d be pretty good. I just wanted a chance. At that time, the varsity kids said ‘Coach that is your championship team’. That group of kids has never been afraid. They have always competed and believed they could compete against anyone.” The Rams improved to 5-7 record in 2012 earning a playoff berth. That young group of talented players continued to develop. Over the past two seasons, the c-teamers have turned into the leaders on Hillcrest’s varsity squad. More importantly, the Rams have shown
the consistency that the community has desired for so long. Hillcrest posted a school best 11-2 record last season earning it’s first region championship and advanced to the second round playoffs for the first time in school history in the process. The Rams carried that momentum into this season capturing it’s second consecutive region title in 2014. Hillcrest has a 13-1 record and are just one point away from a perfect season. The Rams have advanced two rounds farther than last season and have posted a school record 630 points this season. Hillcrest has outscored its opponents by 500 Porter said that the chemistry on this year’s team has been excellent. “Our coaching staff gets along very well,” Porter said. “Our defensive coaches Terry Simmons and Adrique Hayward coached the 2011 C-Team. They have been with that group for a long time and really know the players. The players play extremely hard for those guys. Coach Amos Lamb has done a great job offensively and as the head of the strength program. Our kids train harder than any team in the state and I think that has been a huge difference this year. Instead of having one coach call the plays on offense, there are three of us that work together. Our kids have seen our coaches getting along and so they get along. We haven’t always had that type of chemistry.”

Charges Dismissed for Hillpine Bridge Sign Roy & Frances Shelton, Innkeepers
Beth Kelley Fann The Hillpine Drive bridge has been out for over a year now and has been a source of frustration for many Poinsettia residents. In March of this year, Poinsettia homeowner Dixie Nance placed a hand-drawn sign at the bridge with one request: “Chief Grounsell give up back pay to fix our bridge” Keith Grounsell was terminated while still in his probationary period in December 2012, only to be reinstated in February 2014 by a newly elected City Council. The newly elected council members, Sylvia Lockaby, Taylor Graham and Elizabeth Braswell, had based their election campaigns on the issue of Grounsell’s dismissal. Shortly after the sign was placed, newly reinstated Chief Grounsell initiated an investigation into the sign being placed on the bridge. Mrs. Nance upon hearing of this, voluntarily went to the Simpsonville Police Department and admitted placing the sign. She was arrested on March 19 and Mrs. Nance was charged with disorderly conduct under City Ordinance 26-106 and she was released on her own recognizance.
The charge against Mrs. Nance was dismissed this month. Mrs. Nance declined to comment. Chief Grounsell submitted this statement via email: “Dixie Nance agreed to apologize for her wrong doings and to do community service work. On this basis we decided not to pursue the charges against her.” It is unclear if Mrs. Nance actually had to complete community service without a conviction or if she was required to submit a formal apology. It is also unclear to whom she apologized. A follow up email to Chief Grounsell has not been answered at the time of publication. The Hillpine Drive bridge remains blocked off. In a 4-3 vote by City Council, Chief Grounsell was given 14 months back pay and an allowance for other expenses he would have incurred had he not been dismissed. In a 4-2 vote, City Council voted to give Chief Grounsell an additional settlement amount. Council members voting in support of giving the back pay, additional amounts, and the settlement amount were Geneva Lawrence, Sylvia Lockaby, Taylor Graham, and Elizabeth Braswell.

Small Business Saturday: A Huge Success Beth Kelley Fann
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2014
Worried Sick Worried sick is not just an expression, but for many people it is a way of life. This sickness that has infected the highest levels of corporate America, made its way into the comfort and protection of the walls we call home, and wages war on our society. Like many diseases, it starts subtle with little symptoms and cultivates into life altering illnesses.
Thanks to an expanded marketing program by American Express and enthusiastic business owners, Small Business Saturday broke records for some retail shops. In Simpsonville, Chamber staff offered free biscuits and organized a BINGO game with a gift card prize. Stephanie Cox of Emily Elizabeth Paper Boutique organized the event and helped make sure her neighboring business had what they needed.
Stress is a self-inflicted infirmity that, if not treated, can deteriorate your health condition. The immune system is compromised due to compounding stress. With no healthy median for escape, chronic stress can cause sickness more frequently, which can transition into life threatening diseases.
Fountain Inn also did well, with shop owners there also reporting a busy shopping day. Simpsonville will continue the Shop Local fun with a Customer Appreciation Night this Friday until 10 PM. Shops will be open late and refreshments will be served. See pages 2 and 3 for more details on upcoming events.
What’s New in Simpsonville Beth Kelley Fann Residents are abuzz about two new businesses coming to the Kohl’s/Ingles shopping center. Michael’s Arts and Crafts and PetSmart have both placed banners on the exterior of the mall, announcing their future in Simpsonville. Servpro of South Greenville County has opened a new location in downtown Simpsonville, next to Peacock Cottage. The orange door at 212 Servpro guests mingled in Peacock Cottage next door at the Grand Opening. NE Main Street can’t be missed. The company specializes in fire and water cleanup and restoration. A grand opening was held on Monday, December 1. Allen Tate has opened their Simpsonville office at 672-B Fairview Road. The 4,000 square foot space was recently renovated to accommodate up to 35 realtors with wireless technology and video screens for sharing properties with clients. Ahead of the coming Simpsonville branch of the Swamp Rabbit Trail, a new bicycle shop has opened in town. Cycle Haus is located at 3930 Grandview Drive. The shop owners also organize community rides and events. Visit them at cyclehaus.bike for more information. AlignLife Chiropractic and Natural Health Center held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Thursday. The practice is located at 419 SE Main Street, and more information is available at alignlifesimpsonville.com Have a question, or want to submit an update about business growth or openings? Despite our best efforts to prevent stress, we inevitably run into it. The common sources of stress are money (71%), work (69%), and the economy (59%) according to American Psychological Association (APA). Stress management has become a new trend in recent years. Fewer than four out of every 10 Americans report doing a good job in managing there stress levels (APA). Positioning yourself in a better state to handle life’s stresses can change your mental and physical condition. Here are a few tips to help successfully manage stress: Stay active – The best way to combat stress is to maintain a healthy life style. Devoting a few hours a week to exercise strengthens the body and mind. Eat smart – Healthy eating fortifies the immune system. The right changes to your diet will help combat the negativities of stress. Team up – Meet with your primary care physician and your psychologist. This dynamic duo can create a treatment plan to actively and successfully treat stress (APA). A healthy life is not necessarily a stress free life, but a life where stress is appropriately and adequately managed. The goal is to manage stress and not let stress manage you. Every day is an opportunity to accomplish this goal. For more information visit www.spartanburgregional.com/ healthhealing

By way of explanation of the store’s name (aside from its reference to a bit of well-known American Romantic poetry), owner Pete Garrett says, “They just don’t make the items we carry anymore!” A native of Fountain Inn, Pete buys many of Nevermore’s items locally from estate sales, auctions, and private sellers. He also buys online and has acquired items that bring
with them the spirit of places like South Dakota, Illinois, and Las Vegas, and he has shipped to buyers around the world, most recently to Italy and Australia. With everything from gas station and Coca-Cola collectibles to military items, furniture, and jewelry, Nevermore is a sure bet for holiday shopping and year-round browsing. Stop by Nevermore Antiques at 116 North Main Street, follow them on Facebook, and check out the website at www.NevermoreAntiquesSC.com for monthly specials and to see “new” antiques as they come in weekly.

In the Spotlight: Nevermore Antiques A relatively recent addition to the Fountain Inn business district, Nevermore Antiques is not new to the Upstate antiques scene; the shop’s continuous rotation of eye-catching items, each one exactly right for someone, is visible proof. With its wide range of prices and huge variety, Nevermore is one of Main Street’s finest.

Local Spotlight: Whak a Bone Outfitters Brandon Herring From time to time we run across a local business that really stands out from the rest. This particular time it happened completely by chance.

I met Dwayne Wessinger online in a Facebook group dedicated to deer hunting in South Carolina. He seemed like an ordinary guy; loved deer hunting, loved his family, and loved to encourage others to get outside and explore our outdoors. I soon found out that Dwayne was more than just another hunter posting pictures of his latest harvest online for others to gawk at. Dwayne was an innovator. Dwayne and his wife own a small company in the Hopkins area named Whak a Bone Outfitters. It’s their PeeOn a Limb product that caught my attention. I heard the name a few times before, but I wrote it off as another gimmick that the hunting industry is so well known for. After talking with Dwayne and learning more about it, I found his product remarkably simple, but very effective. More than just another way to get into hunter’s pockets, it is a scent dispenser that clips to a tree limb out where the deer can smell it. Imagine that, a hunting product that actually works and doesn’t cost very much at all. Dwayne’s wife, Toni, is a phlebotomist and often brings home these little test tubes from work. He picked up a tube one day and looked it over and decided he could use it for something instead of throwing them away. He made up a couple scent dispensers for himself and used them when he was hunting. Dwayne didn’t set out to find his niche in the market, it came looking for him. PeeOn a Limb became an actual product in a humorous skit in a Facebook video called “Redneck Tech Tip of the Day”. After the video was shown on Facebook, he immediately had folks asking to buy the product he demonstrated in the video. He laughed it off at first, but more and more people began asking to buy the product. He sold a couple to some friends and the requests kept coming in. He realized then he was on to something. Toni secured the business license and PeeOn a Limb was official. From a funny video on Facebook to filling more orders than they can handle, it truly is a perfect example of the American Dream come true.
You can check out PeeOn a Limb on their Facebook page at facebook.com/peeonalimb or online at peeonalimb. com. As a hunter who has used the product, I can tell you that you won’t be disappointed. They have over 14 different scents available that are each uniquely effective in different times of the season. This time of year, I would recommend their sugar beet scent. It’s cold outside and those deer are looking for food. Sugar beet is like a sweet candy for the deer and just like my five old, they’ll go crazy over some candy. The freedom to create and innovate in a free market is what makes this country so great and these homegrown businesses are the backbone of this great nation. In upcoming issues, I will be focusing on companies in our own backyard that are making their mark on a global scale. If you know anyone that is in the hunting industry that is up-and-coming, I’d love to hear about them. Send me an email at brandon@simpsonvillebanner.com and maybe they will end up in our local spotlight.

Whak a Bone Outfitters is a family owned and operated business. Each member of the household has a job in the assembly, packaging, and shipping of the product. The dispensers are loaded and packaged in the family dining room at a table that also serves as the family’s dinner table. It’s a small operation, but Dwayne and his family wouldn’t have it any other way. In fact, Dwayne was approached by a marketing group that wanted to take on the brand and mass market it. Dwayne was excited about the deal until he heard them mention they could have the scent dispensers mass produced in Mexico. As a former Marine who loves God and Country, this was a deal breaker. He turned down the possibility of making a million dollars overnight just to make sure his product was always going to be 100% American made.

“Our Heritage comes from James Cannon, who is 85 years old to date. Mr. Cannon, his dad and grandfather served the community in funeral service dating back to 1879. To have the Cannon family’s experience, and their 135 year funeral service reputation, as a supporting business partner is invaluable. Mr. Cannon’s endorsement confirms, in my mind, that we are doing the business of funeral service the right way. Having Chuck Calvert, Director of Funeral Service, Carol Cannon Hopkins, a fourth generation family member, Ray Brown, Kirby and Thelma Ballew, Larry Couch, Ron and Joan Bridges, Angie Richardson and Jimmy Davis as staff members better positions us to serve local families with respected, long-term residents of this community. These individuals have served and held many positions of responsibility across our community for decades. I appreciate our staff that enable us to be attentive to the needs of families and the details associated with the service that we provide. We appreciate those that have entrusted us to have served their family. We are nearing the completion of our new Chapel. We invite you to come by to see it.”
