I work as a type designer at Justfont, a type foundry in Taiwan. My journey started when I was studying fine arts at college, that's where I found out I really liked layout and design, and it made me want to learn more about these crafts.
After graduating in 2007, I went to Japan to study graphic design. It was there I first got into typography courses. This really sparked my love for typefaces and typography, and I started practicing Kanji hand lettering. A year later, I managed to get Level 3 Proficiency in Japanese Lettering.
I got my MA in Design in 2014 and then moved back to Taiwan to work at Justfont, which is a startup type foundry in Taipei. I got to work as a Chinese type designer and also taught Chinese lettering. Being part of the font design team, I helped create three Chinese font families. These were big projects – each family had over 14,000 characters and came in six or more weights.
I see type design as what I want to do for the rest of my life. So, in 2023, after I had worked for 9 years and had just finished a big two-year project, I decided to take a year o without pay to further enhance my professional skills.
Currently, I am immersed in studying Japanese Kana design in Japan, and I'm also eager to enhance my skills in Latin character design at Type@Cooper. I'm genuinely looking forward to improving my abilities in both Japanese and English type design this year, as I believe it will significantly benefit my future font design work.

Right now, I'm working on a Japanese Kana typeface called Matsu Toshi. I'm lucky to be doing this with the help of Mr. Osamu Torinoumi, who's guiding me in Matsumoto City, Japan.
The process started with me using a brush to write Kana characters. Then, I moved on to using a pencil for lettering. Finally digitizing these designs using Glyphs APP.
At the moment, I have completed light to medium weights for Hiragana and light weight for Katakana. Eventually, I plan to expand to include the heavy weight to fully support Japanese typesetting.

Lanyang Ming is a Traditional Chinese font family with six weights, and each one has 15,622 glyphs. This font family includes Traditional Chinese characters, Latin alphabets, numerals, and symbols.
I was part of a five-person team working on this, and my job was to draw over 5,000 Chinese characters. I also worked on adjusting the Latin alphabets and numerals and setting the kerning.
Plus, I designed and coded combining diacritics for the alphabets. This was important so the font could support the typesetting needs of all the languages spoken in Taiwan, also known as Formosan languages.

Jinxuan was the very first font I worked on after I joined Justfont, back when there were only two type designers in the office.
It's special because it was the first Chinese font to be crowdfunded. We didn't see it coming, but it got a lot of support during the crowdfunding campaign, raising nearly $820,000 USD. This success was a big deal for us. It helped keep the company survive and thrive.
In our team, I took on the task of designing the early Chinese characters for Jinxuan. I also made all the numbers and symbols for the font. This included creating Zhuyin (also known as Bopomofo, ㄅㄆㄇㄈ), which is used for phonetic notation of Chinese. ③ 金萱 Jinxuan

金萱那提
After Jinxuan, we developed Jinxuan Latte, which is a rounded version of Jinxuan.
This time, the design and drawing of all glyphs were handled by a team of five designers. Each of us contributed to more than 4,000 Chinese characters and thousands of other glyphs.
Both Jinxuan and Jinxuan Latte are special because they're the first commercial fonts that fully support Formosan languages. This includes Taiwanese Hokkien, Hakka, and the romanization of all 16 indigenous tribes. I'm really happy to have contributed to promoting local languages through these projects.

In 2022, the Chiayi City Government decided to rebrand its identity system and commissioned IF OFFICE to setting the design direction and coordinates the work. Following this, IF OFFICE made the decision to engage Justfont to design a custom English font specifically for the city.
Chiayi is celebrated for its wood industry and captivating historical charm. For this project, I drew inspiration from Edward Johnston's typeface, aiming to create a font that strikes a balance between traditional and modern aesthetics.
Chiayi City Font is Taiwan's first city-specific font. This font is now available for free download and is featured in the signage of municipal buildings.

In 2020 and 2021, McDonald's Taiwan aimed to engage its audience with entertaining Halloween campaigns on social media, choosing to offer free fonts to the public as part of the festivities.
The 'McNugget' and 'Macdonaldʼs French Fries' fonts were originally illustrated by the artist 柯平, were my responsibility to transform into functional font formats. These two fonts are also my first attempt at creating color fonts in both Apple (SBIX) and Microsoft (COLR) formats.
McNuggets are formed from five distinct shapes. When dipped in sauce, they transform into letters of the alphabet.

My Online Chinese Type Design Course
As a Chinese lettering course instructor, I aim to inspire students' interest in type design. Despite the challenges of creating Chinese fonts (usually take years to complete), it's glad to see some students become independent type designers or join type foundries these years.
