QUEER CLUBHOUSE 2021 DESIGN FOR THE OTHERNESS IN THE CITY

The House of Evangelista will be situated on the Juta street of Braamfontein in Johan nesburg of Gauteng.68 Juta is located on a safe block between a high rise building to the west and a medium rise building to the east. The site spans the whole block to smit street allowing entry on both Juta and Smit streets. The land use on the block is mixed with retail and commercial spaces on the ground floor and residential on the upper floors. The club houses major queer related programmes such as a small health service space, ball room, dance room and reflection room. The concept was derived from a traditional space of worship which offers an open door to all and a place of celebration, historically these buildings are open for the entire community however with regards to queer bodies they have always rejected them. The building is integrated into the urban character, blurring the edges between public and private spaces. The ballroom becomes part of the street with installations on the now pedestrian street enabling queer individuals to claim the part on the urban context.

STRUCTURAL MODEL OF DESIGN @1:50

The project involves designing two public buildings next to each other each encapsulating a symbolic and everyday . My proposal aimed to create spaces for students of the faculty of Art to be able to sell their artwork and it also borrows from subterranean archi tecture. The building is at an angle and its roof is planted to create and illusion of it being part of the landscape. The proposal is explored through a conceptual lense and then later detailed for coucil approval. It uses a frame steel construction and adops sustainble de sign methods.

The proposal in an interdisciplinary project for a local fashion designer.My project looks into creating a fashion house for the designer using her main design aesthetic and princi ples. .She uses alot of geometry maily the hexagon as it is a sacred shape in the basotho tribe .I usedthe idea of a kraal to create a central space in the shop where the main light fixture which takes the shape of bull will be hanged.The luminiare project uses recylable materials which are wire and tubes. Shadows of the pendants create an illusion of a runway which still mainatain the aesthetic of the brand(Mantsho Designs)

Her designs are a perfect balance between functionaslity and aesthetic. Mantsho Design House makes clothes that embody African Finesse and is in spired by a generation of Africans that are global and still embrace their cullture through garments and prints. Her prints are inspired by the Basotho cultural attire worn by young women after the their intiations called the Seshweshwe.
