Amazon Kindle Paperwhite for iPhone
The Paperwhite is Amazon’s best-selling Kindle. The latest version takes some of the best elements of the top-end Kindle Oasis, such as a waterproof design and the ability to listen to audiobooks, and packs them into a more affordable e-reader. The Wi-Fi-only price is £119.99 for 8GB, and there’s a 32GB version for £149.99. If you don’t want to see Amazon’s ‘Special Offers’, you’ll need to spend around £10 more to get rid of them, which we recommend. The Paperwhite doesn’t feel as premium as the Oasis, and the plastic back shows up fingerprints, but it’s easy to grasp. Its bezels are thick, sitting flush with the display for a more high-end look. On the bottom edge, you’ll find the power button as well as a Micro-USB slot for charging. You use the touchscreen to flip through pages, and we found this responsive. The Paperwhite’s 6in display has an impressive density of 300 pixels per inch. The brightness has been slightly improved, though it’s not particularly noticeable. The waterproof design means you can read in the bath, or while lounging by the pool, without worrying about the device getting splashed or dunked. It can survive up to 60 minutes at depths of up to two metres. Using the Paperwhite for roughly one hour a day, it dropped around 30% of its power per week. A charge will typically last around three weeks, depending on use. You should still get a week’s use if reading for a few hours a day with the brightness high. It doesn’t take long to charge either.
Audibly good Another feature of the Paperwhite is audiobooks integration, enabling you to listen to Audible titles on the e-reader using a Bluetooth headphone set or speaker. You can seamlessly switch between ebook and audiobook if you’ve bought both versions.
Obviously, buying both can get expensive, but it’s useful if you’re trying to make your way through a particularly long book. The 8GB storage option is double that of the last Kindle Paperwhite. If you’re not too interested in audiobooks, this still offers lots of space for thousands of ebooks. Still, upping the storage to 32GB is only £30 more… The latest Kindle software allows you to set multiple font preferences so a number of people can use the same device; with a tap at the top right, you’ll get a drop-down of all your profiles so you can easily switch between them. There’s also a useful dark mode to allow you to read white text on a dark page and brightness is easy to control. The new Kindle Paperwhite is a big step up. In fact, there’s now only one real reason to buy the more expensive Kindle Oasis its premium look and feel. The Oasis starts at £229.99 though, so that design element has to be pretty important to you. If you’re happy with the mid-range look and feel of the all-new Paperwhite, you’re more likely to have a bit of cash left to buy some ebooks. best iphone buying guide 2018
