‘We can feel the forest close in around us…’

For a man who died at such a young age, Franz Schubert wrote an astonishing quantity of music. That said, he didn’t get around to finishing it all. In Rendering, Luciano Berio picks up where Schubert left off. An act of homage from one composer to another, Rendering brings to life Schubert’s final sketches as orchestrated by Berio. Fresh yet familiar, the music is otherworldly and alluring. Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony is one of his bestloved works while the Concertstück by Robert Schumann showcases the amazing talents of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra’s horn section.

16 February Saturday 7.30pm Albert Hall, Launceston Marko Letonja conductor William Barton didjeridu DVORˇÁK Symphony No 8 EDWARDS Tyalgum Mantras STRAVINSKY The Firebird – Suite (1919) Marko Letonja teams up with didjeridu virtuoso William Barton for Ross Edwards’ Tyalgum Mantras, a trance-like meditation performed here in a special arrangement for the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Stravinsky’s colourful Firebird Suite and Dvorˇák’s Symphony No 8 draw from Russian and Bohemian folk traditions while at the same time upholding the distinctive sound worlds of their respective composers. As always at our season-opener concerts, complimentary sparkling wine will be served at interval. Join us!

Pete has another, living on a hill in the city. Two boys, in two different parts of Tassie, go to bed one night and accidentally have each other’s dreams! You and your children will be amazed and inspired as the orchestra and performers in Hobart interact live with musicians and performers in Launceston/Burnie. Filmed images, puppets and music will interweave between the spaces in this highly original show directed by Frank Newman. Graeme Koehne’s stunning score complements Finegan Kruckemeyer’s story of mystery and friendship in a magic realist, digital puppetry world first.

Richard Gill is an inspiring musician. A conductor, educator and lively media commentator, he believes strongly in the transformative power of music and the vital importance of music to the lives of us all. Be touched by Richard’s brilliance in this concert of works by Haydn, J S Bach and others. Fall in love with the oboe d’amore (literally, the oboe of love) when David Nuttall performs the solo part in J S Bach’s Concerto for Oboe d’amore BWV 1055.

Each was touched by the music of the other and each discerned in the other the sound of the individual struggling to be heard. Acclaimed Swiss soprano Maya Boog sings Britten’s orchestral song cycle Les illuminations, settings of strange and wonderful poems by Arthur Rimbaud. Britten’s Four Sea Interludes are magnificent tone poems in their own right and Shostakovich’s Symphony No 1 presents a fresh-voiced young composer at the start of a remarkable career. Arvo Pärt’s Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten is a fitting tribute to the English composer in this, his centenary year. TIO

GOUNOD Faust – Ballet Music MOZART Piano Concerto No 27 FRANCK Symphony in D minor

With more than 100 concertos in his repertoire, Howard Shelley knows music for piano and orchestra inside out. In this concert he performs Mozart’s Piano Concerto in B-flat, K595, Mozart’s last ever piano concerto and a strikingly beautiful one at that. Gounod’s opera Faust was a runaway success when it was first performed. Come to know this hugely popular work through the Ballet Music written for it and enjoy César Franck’s romantically charged Symphony in D minor.

MOZART

‘The greatest symphony of modern times’ is how Elgar’s Symphony No 1 was described by Hans Richter, conductor of the first performance. Leading English maestro Mark Wigglesworth makes his debut with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra conducting this landmark English work. Also on the program is Benjamin Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem, a poignant and heartfelt response to the ancient Mass for the Dead. These grand-scale works require a grand-scale orchestra. The TSO will be augmented by musicians from the Australian Youth Orchestra.

Marko Letonja is no stranger to the world of opera, having won acclaim in the great opera houses of Europe including Milan’s illustrious La Scala. Together with soprano Maya Boog and baritone José Carbó, Marko leads this starry line-up of the very best that opera has to offer including Bellini’s ‘Casta diva’ (Norma), Rossini’s ‘Largo al factotum’ (The Barber of Seville) and Verdi’s ‘Sempre libera’ (La traviata). Enjoy the heart-wrenching melodies, the emotionfilled climaxes and the larger-than-life passions of opera at its best. What’s more, the TSO Chorus will be on hand to sing up a storm with some great opera choruses.

SCHUMANN Symphony No 4 MOZART Exsultate, jubilate MOZART Mass in C major, Coronation Music fit for a king! Legend has it that Mozart’s Coronation Mass was performed at the coronation of Habsburg emperor Francis II. A work where choir, orchestra and soloists come together in perfect harmony, the Coronation Mass contains some of Mozart’s most ravishing music. Exsultate, jubilate is a Mozart show-stopper for soprano and orchestra while Schumann’s Symphony No 4 is a powerful and mercurial work by one of music’s great romantics.

The Songs of the Auvergne are as beautiful as the French countryside from which they come and are among the loveliest folksongs ever arranged for soprano and orchestra. Bizet’s L’Arlésienne takes its inspiration from a different region of France – the southern city of Arles – while Poulenc’s witty Sinfonietta offers the sophistication of Paris pure and simple. RACHMANINOV The Rock RACHMANINOV Piano Concerto No 1 BRAHMS Symphony No 4

Sebastian Lang-Lessing returns to Tasmania to conduct the orchestra that he nurtured for eight years. Also making a return visit is USbased pianist Kirill Gerstein, recent recipient of a coveted Gilmore Artist Award. Rachmaninov throws down the gauntlet to all pianists in his brilliant Piano Concerto No 1. At around the same time that he dashed off the concerto, Rachmaninov wrote The Rock, a symphonic poem in the tradition of Tchaikovsky. Brahms’s Symphony No 4 – the composer’s final symphony – is a glorious summing up of a lifetime’s achievements.

Not sure whether she was awake or still dreaming, Cosima Wagner first heard this heavenly music as it drifted through the house on the morning of her 33rd birthday. There was nothing secretive about the first performance of Haydn’s Drumroll Symphony, a work that enjoyed immediate success in London in 1795 and has been a firm favourite ever since. Be part of a first performance yourself as Lloyd Hudson, TSO Principal Piccolo, gives the Tasmanian première of Paul Stanhope’s Piccolo Concerto. *Tasmanian première. Kodály’s Dances of Galanta take their inspiration from the rich and exotic folk music traditions of Hungary while Beethoven’s Symphony No 7 offers the ultimate feel-good symphony from classical music’s ultimate symphonist.

Since winning the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in 2001, violinist Baiba Skride has performed with the world’s leading orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic and London’s Philharmonia Orchestra. In this, her second appearance with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, she performs Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto, a powerful and emotional work from the late 1930s written in response to a world on the brink of war. An important new commission by Andrew Schultz pays homage to Britten while works by Mozart – a favourite overture and a great symphony – bookend a concert of exceptional music and an exceptional artist.

Written in a white heat of activity, Schumann’s Cello Concerto is one of the composer’s most passionate works and a mainstay of the cello repertory. Hear it performed by outstanding soloist Sue-Ellen Paulsen, TSO Principal Cello. Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony and Hebrides Overture offer two contrasting musical snapshots – the sunny Mediterranean on the one hand and mist-shrouded Scotland on the other. Both are the work of one of music’s consummate tone painters. Another great tone painter, Richard Strauss, displays his Mozartean side in the Serenade for Winds.

Few Australian musicians can boast the versatility of internationally renowned composer, performer and conductor Brett Dean. Former Artistic Director of the Australian National Academy of Music, Brett Dean appears with his brother Paul – current Artistic Director of ANAM – as co-soloist in Bruch’s Concerto for Viola and Clarinet. Ariel’s Music, for clarinet and orchestra, was written in memory of Elisabeth Glaser and her daughter Ariel, both of whom died of AIDS-related illnesses. Fittingly, Brahms’s Tragic Overture follows. The concert begins with Brahms’s virtuosic riff on student drinking songs, the Academic Festival Overture.

Argentinean-born Sol Gabetta is one of the most versatile cellists of her generation having performed and recorded works by Vivaldi, Haydn, Elgar and Shostakovich to widespread acclaim. An artist who has appeared with many of the world’s leading orchestras, she makes her debut with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra as soloist in Haydn’s celebrated Cello Concerto in C major. Support the tso into the future – the tso Foundation Donations to the TSO Foundation support the TSO into the future. Launched in 2008, the TSO Foundation is an endowment fund intended to guarantee the longterm financial security of the TSO. The Foundation provides a significant capital base from which 80% of the interest earned by the fund each year is distributed to the TSO. An independent board of directors oversees the Foundation’s financial accountability. In 2011 the Foundation distributed $22,871 to the TSO to help support its ongoing activities. Gifts to the TSO Foundation are tax deductible. One way that you might also consider supporting the Foundation is by leaving a bequest in your will directed to the Foundation in the knowledge that your legacy will live on through its capital preservation in the Foundation fund. For those concerts where choral forces are required, the TSO is joined by the TSO Chorus, an auditioned group of 75 voices that was founded in 1992. June Tyzack has been Chorusmaster since 2001.

Hear musicians from the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra perform fine chamber music in beautiful and historic Tasmanian venues.
