Chinese woman pays US$44,710 back to crowdfunders who helped her father A woman from southeastern China has returned 300,000 yuan (US$44,710) to 300 people – many of them strangers – who donated money to a crowdfunding appeal she started four years ago. In 2015, Hai Lin posted an appeal for 300 donations of 1,000 yuan on WeChat, with a promise to pay lenders back within five years. She kept her promise – and paid back all her loans two years early. Hai took to the social media app WeChat in June 2015, saying she needed the money because her father – a truck driver – knocked a man down and had to pay compensation. At the time, Hai’s mother had been admitted to hospital with bleeding in the brain. Hai said the accident was a big blow and, for the first time in her life, she felt frightened. “My father told me that if we couldn’t afford the compensation, he would run away to escape the debt,” Hai said. “I said I would try my best to keep that from happening.” In her post on WeChat, she wrote that she was looking for 300 people to lend her 1,000 yuan each. She planned to pay back those debts in five years by returning money to five lenders each month. To her surprise, 300 WeChat contacts, many of whom were not acquaintances, came up with the funds in one night. Here’s a crossword puzzle based on the movie characters from Avengers. Each sentence describes something that is quite predictable in each character’s mannerism. You can work in pairs for this activity. Before you begin, however, make sure that all your classmates know the characters mentioned below. Spreading love to stop the bullies THE Junior Chamber International Bandar Klang (JCI Bandar Klang) and Junior Chamber International Petaling Jaya (JCI PJ) are organising a 2019 Buddy Not Bully and International Children’s Drawing Contest (2019 BNB X ICDC). The Buddy Not Bully programme by JCI Bandar Klang was initiated following a bullying incident that led to the death of an 18-year-old student on June 15, 2017. JCI Bandar Klang president Gary Lee Poh Sing said bullying existed in many forms in school, at the workplace and in the cyber world. “We are fortunate to collaborate with JCI PJ so that the impact of the programme can be further highlighted,” he added. Since 2017, JCI Bandar Klang has been giving talks to secondary school students in Klang and Petaling Jaya and has included the BNB short video competition and drawing contest to spread awareness of school, social and cyber bullies. In 2018, through a series of BNB talks and a short video competition, the programme reached 10,000 students and was recognised by JCI as the Best Local Peace Project 2018. This year, the two JCI branches have joined hands to combine their projects to impart knowledge and skills of self-defence while raising public awareness of bullying in school. “This crossover joint project was initiated after a fruitful discussion between JCI PJ and JCI Bandar Klang. “Both chapters have a common noble goal to promote peace among children,” said JCI PJ president Jovie Lim Hooi Ping. JCI PJ ICDC 2019 organising chairman Exin Moh hopes to promote the spirit of love and gratitude through the drawing event. “Through this project, we hope to deliver the message on bullying, how we can stop it and how we can appreciate our society,” she said. One good turn deserves another ONCE upon a time, a hardworking ant decided to take a break from his daily chore to have a sip of water. He went to the bank of a stream to quench his thirst. As the ant drank, a gush of water swept the poor ant in its current. A dove that had been sitting on a branch of a nearby tree had been watching the ant all along. He saw what had happened and knew that the ant was in trouble. He immediately swooped down with a leaf in his beak. It placed the broad leaf as close as possible to the ant. The grateful ant that was gasping for air, tugged at the leaf and mounted it. Finally, the leaf came to a stop when it had gotten trapped among some twigs. The ant quickly scuttled off and headed back to the nest. A few days later, as the ant was carrying his load of leaves back to his nest, he noticed the dove resting on one of the shady branches. The dove was closing his eyes to catch forty winks. He did not notice an archer nearby. The archer was already aiming for the dove. The ant upon seeing this said to himself: “Oh, the dove is in danger! The arrow will surely pierce his heart. I must do something about it!” He dropped his load and hurried over to the archer. As soon as he reached, he climbed up the leg of the archer and gripped the archer’s skin. It then injected its venom using its stinger. The archer yelped in pain and threw his bow and arrow on to the ground. In doing so, he stepped on some twigs and made more noise. This woke the dove up who then sensed the danger. He flew away to safety. This story tells us that a good deed is never lost.

“Recognise those who help others” PETALING JAYA: It is time to give more recognition to Malaysians whose selfless acts bring about positive change to others, says social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye. “Volunteerism comes from a caring heart and I believe there are many people out there who care enough and will go the extra mile to extend a helping hand. “Even if they don’t expect any rewards for their noble deeds, credit should be given where it is due to inspire others to make the same commitment for the greater good of a harmonious society,” he said during the official launch of Star Golden Hearts Award 2019 in Menara Star yesterday. Lee said Star Media Group, supported by Yayasan Gamuda, had been recognising these unsung heroes since 2015. Now into its fifth year, Lee will once again lead a panel of judges to search for the 10 best individuals or organisations that are committed to helping the needy and underprivileged. “They should be fully committed, such as addressing the issue of poverty and helping to bring about mutual understanding among all the diverse races in our plural country,” he said. “This year’s nominees should also be able to influence and inspire others, so more will do the same for the betterment of the people.” Star Golden Hearts Award aims to honour those who have dedicated their time and efforts to helping the underprivileged. Past winners include non-profit social enterprise UmieAktif which equips underprivileged women with sewing skills and Barefoot Mercy which provides electricity and education support to improve the quality of life in rural Sarawak. Heroes LOOK at the illustrations. The words that these animals make actually sound like (or mimic) the words used to describe the sounds they make. From the examples, you can see that an owl “hoots”, a crow “caws” and a cattle “moos”! This special effect, usually used in literature, is called Onomatopoeia. Writers use this effect to bring a story or poem to life! There’s another place where you can find such words being used. You can find them in comic books. poem BABY frogs have tails and they are called tadpoles. They live in water until they grow bigger and became frogs. Because they are so little, they can easily be eaten by the other bigger animals around them. The 10 little tadpoles in this poem are playing in a pool and refuse to follow a water-rat that urges them to follow him to school. When they hear their mother calling them for dinner, they quickly obey.

Grab driver driven by selflessness PETALING JAYA: A Grab driver never thought that driving a sick woman to the hospital would gain him fame on social media. “I think it is a small gesture,” Mohd Nor Iman Abdullah said. “Are you the driver who sent a woman to the hospital and refused to get paid?” is a question I get from some of my passengers now. “They recognise me due to a viral post on Facebook.” The woman’s daughter, Carmen Kiaw, shared the post to a public group on Facebook. Detailing the chronology of events, Kiaw said Nor Iman took her mother to the hospital when she was not feeling well. She said the driver helped to carry her mother to the car and refused money after arriving at the hospital. The post has since garnered more than 16,000 reactions and shared 946 times. In the post, Kiaw said she received a call while she was at work. She then rushed home to send her mother to the hospital. When the Grab driver arrived, Kiaw asked him to help her carry her mother into the car and that she would pay him more for his assistance. Instead, Mohd Nor Iman, 23, consoled Kiaw and told her not to worry. “Memories of my late mother came to my mind then. I never had the chance to look after her as I was a baby,” he said. When contacted, Kiaw said she was touched by the kind act of a complete stranger. “He is kind and helpful. We could not thank him enough,” she said. Mohd Nor Iman and Kiaw have since become friends. “We still keep in touch. Her mother is very grateful and happy to see me,” he said. Some online portals have also picked up the viral post, with headlines like “kind-hearted Malay Grab driver helping Chinese ladies”. “I think race is not an issue when we want to offer help,” said Mohd Nor Iman. Despite the incident that took place over a month ago, some of his passengers still ask him about it. “Through this incident, I realise that a small act of kindness can mean a lot to others,” he said 1. Year 4 – homophones Homophones sound the same, but carry different spellings and different meanings. Here’s an exercise you can try in pairs. Here are several sentences taken from The Star newspaper. They are used correctly in the passage. You and your partner have to figure which word is the homophone. Then, provide the example and its definition! Example: KATHMANDU: As a boy growing up in Nepal, Apa Sherpa dreamed of becoming a doctor, but poverty steered him to a far more dangerous path – working as a guide on Mount Everest, carrying climbing equipment and helping foreign mountaineers scale the world’s tallest peak.

Peak / peek * Peak means mountain tip. * Peek means to have a quick look.

1. Indonesian faces death penalty Maid accused of brutal murder of boss.

2. Reduce water usage When you wash your car, opt to use a pail instead of the hose.

3. National archers to adapt to cool weather National head coach Lee Jae-hyung said the training would be held at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UnisZA) as it is similar to the venue of the world championships which is located near the sea with a windy and cool atmosphere. Answers: 1. maid/made; 2. pail/pale; 3. sea/see

Year 5 – peer pressUre Where there are friends, there will be peer pressure. Depending on who your friends are and their attitude towards the world, they can either be positive or negative influences. There are many ways we can communicate peer pressure. Positive peer pressure encourages friends to have healthy values, positive attitudes and actions, and a spirit of supportive teamwork. Negative peer pressure encourages friends to get into trouble, have bad attitudes and alienate other people. Gather in groups of four. Complete the scene in the comic strip by role-playing the scene. Start with the first frame in the comic strip. Then once you reach the third frame, act out what the characters WOULD say and do if (1) they showed POSITIVE peer pressure and (2) NEGATIVE peer pressure. Take turns to role-play the scene by creating your own dialogue.

THERE are many people in the news who are admired for their talent, passion and commitment to their noble causes. While we sometimes hero-worship these people, we must also ask ourselves why we do not feel that way about certain people. Go through this list and look for names or photographs of people who fit this profile. Write at least two reasons for your choices. When everyone in the class is done, gather in groups of four to share your answers. Remember there are no right or wrong answers, just opinions.
