Thanks to its thickness of just 25mm at the outer edges, it can be integrated flush with existing floorboards without time-consuming levelling measures. Keeping safety in focus above everything else, the element is fitted with a support plate on the underside reinforcing the area around the drain opening thus providing unrivalled peace of mind within the moisture sensitive and ever moving timber floor. The result is an accessible walk-in-shower with elegant linear drainage. wedi Systems (UK) Ltd. Tel: 0161 864 2336 enquiries@wedi.co.uk www.wedi.de/en
Welcome
Manufacturing production rises at fastest pace for six years August saw UK manufacturing output expand at the fastest rate for over six years, as companies and their clients restarted operations following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdowns.
New order intakes also strengthened, whereas the trend in employment remained weak with job losses recorded for the seventh straight month.
The seasonally adjusted IHS Markit/CIPS Purchasing Managers’ Index® (PMI®) rose to a 30-month high of 55.2 in August, up from 53.3 in July but a tick below the earlier flash estimate of 55.3. The PMI has posted above its neutral 50.0 mark for three consecutive months.
The main factors driving production and new orders higher have been the re-opening of manufacturers and their clients following lockdowns and a loosening of other restrictions in place to combat COVID-19. This has not supported a similar recovery or stabilisation in demand for staff, however, with job losses recorded for the seventh successive month.
Fhaheen Khan, Economist at Make UK, said: “Following shocking declines in output during the most difficult moments of lockdown, unsurprisingly the UK manufacturing PMI has been in expansion territory for the third month running. A mixture of new orders, and old orders, have resulted in increased output as firms across the nation have reported the easing of lockdown measures, combined
with consumer-led consumption policies, have helped to restart supply-chains.
“Indeed, this highlights the sector’s role as the most likely candidate to lead the UK’s economic recovery whilst facing one of its deepest recessions on record.
“Yet, a number of concerns that may hinder that recovery remains and that this honeymoon period for above average growth may be short-lived.
“Particularly, as the Job Retention Scheme expires at the end of October, Make UK’s most recent data already indicate job losses are picking up as firms are shedding weight in order to cut costs but risk the possibility of being unable to operate in the coming months. The Government must immediately remodel their approach to the JRS and extend it to the most vulnerable subsectors, such as Automotive and Aerospace, which are dealing with a different schedule for recovery and require a more tailored approach for support.”

Kingspan TEK
Steel and Timber Combine on Stylish Kingspan TEK
Self Build
The Kingspan TEK Building System of structural insulated panels (SIPs) has been used to create a spectacular, cantilevered self-build in Oxfordshire, achieving excellent airtightness and energy efficiency with a fasttrack build programme.
Homeowner, Daniel Frazer, identified timber frame as his preferred construction method at the outset of the project due to its speed of build and ability to be constructed in most weather conditions. Following discussions with Greenspace Architects and Kingspan TEK Delivery Partners, Point 1 Building Systems, he finally settled on the Kingspan TEK Building System. “I was attracted to SIPs due to their air-tightness and even faster erection speed,” Daniel commented. “I particularly liked the ability to have a roof fabricated from the panels.”
The Kingspan TEK Building System is formed from rigid insulation panels which are faced with OSB/3. Kingspan TEK SIPs are pre-cut to each project’s specifications by trained delivery partners, ensuring a simple, fast and accurate installation once on site. Their unique jointing system also ensures excellent

insulation continuity throughout the envelope whilst limiting air-leakage.
Point 1 Building Systems used detailed 3D modelling to interrogate the requirements at the quotation stage and ensure an appropriate structural package was developed. Once the design was agreed they precisely manufactured the panels before delivering them to site to a careful scheduled programme. This supported a rapid build programme and allowed materials to be stored within the perimeter of the site, without encroaching into neighbouring plots.
CUPA PIZARRAS
CUPA PIZARRAS brings modern solar power
to heritage-style home
When a new-build Georgian style home in Harpenden, Hertfordshire required a sustainable solution for their heating and hot water demands CUPA PIZARRAS’ THERMOSLATE® proved to be the ideal solution. The first natural slate solar panel - THERMOSLATE® - was developed as a result of Spanish regulations in 2006, which called for the required installation of solar thermal collectors in all new buildings and roof refurbishments. Now well-established in the European market, CUPA PIZARRAS’ THERMOSLATE® provides no visual interference, optimum energy efficiency and a straight-forward installation process. A key feature of natural slate solar collectors is that they offer an invisible solution, integrating completely with the roof or façade, so THERMOSLATE® met the required criteria for the Cozens family.

PSP Architectural
Matrix A1 and A2 Rated Non-Combustible Cladding Systems
In response to the Grenfell Tower tragedy, the Government brought into force new Building Regulations in December 2018 banning all combustible materials in external walls of new high-rise buildings over 18 metres for certain residential applications. There is currently a consultation underway to potentially reduce this.
Three years after the Grenfell Tower fire disaster there are still many high-risk residential buildings with some form of dangerous cladding. The Government has also revealed that local authorities have taken enforcement action against the owners of at least 30 buildings with Aluminium Composite Material (ACM) cladding.
At the forefront of quality technical building envelope solutions, PSP Architectural offers a range of A1 and A2 rated noncombustible cladding systems, all of which are manufactured in the UK within precision-controlled advanced factories in County Durham and has the technical ability to manufacture bespoke solutions to competently replace unsafe cladding.
Matrix SF, Matrix SFC and Matrix IP are CWCT tested systems that can be manufactured from numerous non-combustible materials and finishes in accordance with BS EN 13501-1:2007+A1:2009:
• Pre-coated classified as A1 fire rated
• Solid aluminium classified as non-combustible
• Solid Zinc classified as non-combustible
• Post powder coated classified A2 fire rated

Glidevale Protect
Next generation roofing underlay offers superior air permeability and strong wind uplift resistance
Building products manufacturer Glidevale Protect has launched Viking Air, an air and vapour permeable (LR) roofing underlay for cold and warm pitched roofs.
Air and vapour-permeable membranes are becoming an option of choice for specifiers due to the ability of the underlay to provide airflow and ventilation into the roof space of the dwelling. Protect Viking Air delivers the solution to this requirement through class-leading air and vapour permeability. This reduces the risk of condensation in line with BS 5250, without the need for additional ventilation, subject to a wellsealed ceiling, which is acceptable to the NHBC.
Viking Air’s resistance to wind uplift ensures suitability for use in wind zones 1-4 at 345mm batten gauge to BS 5534, with no need to tape laps or use additional counter battens. When the membrane is installed at 310mm batten gauge or on sarking, it also meets wind zone 1-5 requirements, ensuring unrestricted use across the UK and Ireland.
With a unique grid design to make precise cutting simple, the underlay can be laid straight over the ridge without cutting material short, ensuring the roof is instantly watertight during the construction stage, and, because the membrane is hydrophobically treated, it provides extra water shedding properties and a high resistance to water penetration. The product is independently certified by BM TRADA.
Viking Air forms an integral part of Glidevale Protect’s roofing membrane family. This includes LR vapour permeable and airtight options, alongside impermeable HR underlays which can be twinned with Glidevale Protect ventilation products and accessories, giving specifiers and contractors a single source solution, whatever their pitched roof challenges.
A leap into the future with large scale R32 air conditioning
A former tram station in Bristol has become the first building in the UK to benefit from large scale R32 air conditioning. The Art Deco building in Gloucester Road was originally a main station for electric trams, and is now occupied by one of the largest environmental business networks in the UK – Future Economy Network.
Renamed, the Future Leap Hub, the refurbished ground floor now brings together likeminded companies and acts as a showcase for sustainable businesses. It offers a carbon neutral, co-working space, meeting rooms and an event space for hire, in which weekly, sustainability themed events are hosted.
The F-Gas Regulations are affecting all air conditioning systems and the next step in the Phase Down of refrigerants with high global warming potential (GWP) takes place in January. The air conditioning industry has been transitioning to R32, which has a significantly lower GWP than previous R410A systems but this has not been possible for larger VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) systems until the launch of the City Multi R32 VRF at the end of 2019.
“We looked across the market at a whole host of technologies for our heating and cooling and when Mitsubishi Electric’s R32 system was recommended to us by Envira-Mech Services, we quickly realised it was absolutely the right product for us,” said Alan Bailey, Director of the Future Economy Group and Future Leap Ltd. “So far, we’ve been really, really, really pleased with the end result.”
Future Leap is carbon neutral in its operation and has incorporated lots of sustainable technologies and solutions, including a carpet made from disused ghost fishing nets that have been reclaimed from the bottom of the ocean and turned into carpeting.
“When I first started talking to Alan about his requirements it was obvious that he wanted a system that would help promote energy efficiency and future-proof the building,” explained Terry Macleod, Managing Director of Envira-Mech Services Ltd. “We’re a Diamond Quality Partner with Mitsubishi Electric and when we heard about R32 VRF at their conference last year, we just knew it would be right for Future Leap. Alan was already aware of F-Gas and was open to anything, so the idea of highly efficient air conditioning that could simultaneously heat and cool and run off 100% renewable energy really appealed to him,” he added.
Envira-Mech Services is based in Clevedon, North Somerset and predominantly covers the south of England, whilst providing national coverage for specific clients. Offering a full design and installation facility for customers, Terry and his team are able to provide a complete turnkey service.
For Future Leap, the team also installed Lossnay mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR). These deliver highly efficient ventilation to the building as they
Envira-Mech Services had a very tight timescale on the project, as the complete refurbishment programme was only three months, so Terry and his team had just five weeks to complete the installation and commissioning. Not only did they have to work around the other trades refurbishing the building at the same time, there was not a lot of room for the services, so they also had to ensure the highest quality of installation for all ducting and pipework as these are all on display.
When Future Leap took over the building, it was a former Maplin electrical goods store, and Envira-Mech Services had to first of all strip out the existing air conditioning before they could install the R32 City Multi and the Lossnay MVHR.
“Terry and his team are experts in air conditioning, ventilation and M&E services, so they were the ideal choice for Future Leap,” explained Steve Reece, Branch Manager for Mitsubishi Electric’s Bristol office. “With this being the first R32 VRF installation in the UK, we worked closely with them to ensure that Future Leap got a system which will deliver perfect, controllable comfort with energy efficiency at its heart.”
The three PURY YNW-A outdoor condensers are installed in a compound in the old Maplin storage yard and these serve 14 PEFY fan coil units throughout the ground floor. Although R32 is mildly-flammable, and room sizes were considered during the design phase, the level of ventilation mean that leak detection wasn’t required.
The Future Leap Hub has been re-opened since July and now offers Bristol businesses 70 socially distanced desks as well as an ethical cafe and lifestyle shop.
With the installation of the latest R32 system, the Hub is also able to deliver future-proof heating and cooling, regardless of the weather. gb.mitsubishielectric.com/en/
