Councils invited to shape new initiative to improve access to parks
A new initiative will enable at least 100 towns and cities across the UK to become better places to live and work, by putting nature and green spaces at the heart of their plans and priorities.
The initiative is starting in ‘beta phase’ to enable Councils, communities, partners and funders to shape it together. It aims to attract further investment and support for greener and fairer urban communities, improving people’s health and wellbeing, creating better connected and more climateresilient neighbourhoods. It will focus on those currently lacking nature and access to parks and open green space. Pressure on budgets and competition for urban space has meant that nature, historic parks and green spaces have been neglected or lost from many neighbourhoods over the last few decades.
Nature Towns & Cities, a new initiative set up by The National Trust, The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Natural England aims to help Councils and communities tackle this by bringing nature and green space into their urban communities and places. The three organisations are also working closely with NatureScot, Natural Resources Wales and Northern Ireland Environment Agency to take the initiative UK-wide.
Local authorities and their partners, including community and other civic organisations, are invited to apply for capacity-building grants as part of the initiative. From early next year there will also be the opportunity to join a peer network to share learning and practical solutions and take advantage of schemes to attract new investment.
Nature Towns & Cities builds on the legacy of the Future Parks Accelerator, a previous
partnership between The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the National Trust, as well as closely aligning with Natural England’s Green Infrastructure Framework and standards.
Eilish McGuinness, Chief Executive, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, says: “We are delighted to be part of this partnership initiative to ensure nature is championed across our urban environments and across the UK. It fits with our ambitions to increase our support for strategic projects that help habitats and species thrive, reducing and mitigating the impacts of climate change, while helping people and communities connect to our unique natural heritage and supports our vision for heritage to be valued, cared for and sustained for everyone, now and in the future.”

Any investment in our parks and green spaces has to be good news, not least because such funding has become such a rarity in the last decade or more.
The latest funding scheme we cover on the front page this month might seem comparatively small given the overall value of parks and green spaces to the UK economy, but it is still welcome and can be regarded as a programme to build on to show what can be achieved and push for greater investment.
It is this value the industry provides that is continually underestimated by so many decision-makers that needs to be highlighted as much as possible.
In terms of the significant economic benefits and the positive impact on the health and well-being of local communities around the country, the industry has a vital role to play.
Members of the industry will have gathered at the Birmingham NEC for the 2024 staging of SALTEX, albeit with more of a focus on groundscare.
The event is still an important date in the calendar and chance to gauge opinion on how things have gone over the last 12 months and what we are likely to see in the year to come.
This month we have our Professional Groundscare supplement, which showcases the world-leading aspects of the sector. As the winter season gets int full swing we take a look at Natural Turf Management and the latest products and expertise available to maintain high-quality surfaces all-year round.
There is also a feature on Line Marking and Fertilisers as we focus on a blend of traditional skills and modern innovation. Elsewhere there is a spotlight on Grass Seeds and Wildflowers, along with a focus on what is happening in the Machinery market, the latest case studies from Hard & Soft Landscaping and all the most up-to-date industry news and views.

Improvement Programme (PIP) in 2012 and has since continued with the Pitch Advisory Service (PAS), formerly the Grounds and Natural Turf Improvement Programme (GaNTIP).
During this time, Andy has made incredible contributions to the football community in Staffordshire, assisting in the improvement of around 65 grassroots football sites, equating to more than 150 pitches. His work has not only involved hands-on pitch care but also the preparation of detailed reports offering clubs actionable advice and access to his network within the turf maintenance industry.
Geoff Webb, Grounds Management Association Chief Executive Officer said: “Andy’s induction into the GMA Hall of Fame is a testament to his
dedication to the grounds management industry. His passion, not only at Stoke City but also in grassroots football, has left a lasting legacy that clubs will benefit from in years to come. His contributions go beyond the technical aspects of the job; he has been a mentor and an advocate for raising the standards of pitches across Staffordshire and surrounding areas for over a decade. We are incredibly proud to honour him as part of our 90th anniversary celebrations and look forward to seeing his continued influence on the next generation of grounds keepers.”
Andy has been instrumental in supporting Staffordshire FA through initiatives such as CPD evenings at Stoke City’s facilities and by assisting with the delivery of pitch improvement workshops for
volunteer groundskeepers. His willingness to voluntarily give up his time to share his expertise has made a lasting impact on the quality of grassroots football in the county.
Andy Jackson, Stoke City Grounds Manager and GMA Hall of Fame Inductee said: “I’m incredibly honoured to be inducted into the GMA Hall of Fame, especially during the Association’s 90th anniversary.
“It is a privilege to come to work here at Stoke City every day, where we take great pride in the work we do within the grassroots football community. To see the impact we’ve made together, improving pitches and the game for players at all levels, is really rewarding.”

HTA’s report sets out the importance of horticulture automation
The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) has launched a new report, ‘The Opportunity for Mechanisation and Automation in UK Environmental Horticulture,’ at its FutureGrow Expo event at Stoneleigh Park in Kenilworth.
The research aims to summarise the scope of UK plant and tree production and show potential opportunities for researchers and providers of innovative new technologies to collaborate with the forward-looking environmental horticulture sector. This is crucial to secure greener growth for the UK in the coming years.
The report includes sections such as “Environmental Horticulture in the UK”, “Growth Potential for the Sector
and Labour Challenges”, and “Technological Solutions”, as well as two case studies from HTA members, J & A Growers in Warwickshire and Hilliers Nurseries Ltd in Hampshire.
Fran Barnes, HTA Chief Executive, commented: “The environmental horticulture industry is at a pivotal time of transition as we prepare ourselves for the future. With ambitious governmental environment targets, our sector needs support to evolve with technological advancements in order to help the UK reach its environmental goals. Our report shows the clear possibility of accelerating growth.
“As a sector, environmental horticulture isn’t alone in facing a rising wage bill and challenges
in recruitment. Still, growers are increasingly looking to automate and mechanise to sustainably upscale production to meet this increased demand and ensure the Government can deliver on its challenging environmental targets.
“The UK’s growers produce ornamental plants and trees valued at £1.7 billion annually, enriching over 20 million gardens, parks, and green spaces, and demand is only set to rise.
“By investing in automation, innovation, and sustainable practices, we can meet this demand while addressing resource challenges such as labour, water, and energy. The HTA continues to support its members in gaining investment in new technologies to enable greater productivity,

ensuring the UK has the strategic capacity to grow the plants and trees it needs in the future.”
Laura Jeffery, HTA Market Research Manager, on the report:
“The plants and trees produced in the UK by commercial growers are increasingly being recognised for the role they have to play in improving the nation’s health and wellbeing and mitigating the effects of climate change. The pool of people in the core
hobby gardening demographics is also set to grow in the years to come as the UK population ages, further increasing the demand for plants and trees.
“The appetite for mechanisation and automation technology in environmental horticulture production is strong, and many processes could or, to some extent, already are being automated, as the case studies in our report highlight. However,
the researchers and providers of these innovative technologies need to engage with the sector and have government backing and support for what is a significant business investment. Our report aims to provide ‘food for thought’ to encourage engagement across all parties and secure ‘green growth’ for the UK in the coming years.”

Landscape Institute calls for landscape-led development
The Landscape Institute is calling for a landscape-led approach to development in response to the government’s open consultation on ‘Proposed reforms to the National Planning Policy Framework and other changes to the planning system’.
The Landscape Institute’s response to the proposed reforms builds on its ‘Recommendations for the next UK government’, and promotes a strategic, landscape-led approach, linking the planning of housing and infrastructure with other positive outcomes for the economy, society, and the environment.
Responses to the 106 questions cover a wide range of issues, outlining how landscape can provide solutions to cross-cutting policy issues, and help the government meet its ambitions to drive growth and get Britain building while also responding to the climate emergency and meeting net zero and nature recovery targets.
As well providing as detailed responses on specific topics, the Landscape Institute has also called on the government to recognise 8 key principles for landscape-led development:
1. Prioritise landscape considerations in planning: Landscape is everywhere and the space between and around buildings is important as the buildings themselves. Recognise the fundamental role that landscape-led approaches play in good planning and the importance of the planning system in delivering good and functional landscape.
2. Emphasise Green Infrastructure (GI): Clearly define and prioritise the importance of conserving and enhancing a multi-functional green infrastructure (GI) network, which is key to making best use of land, natural assets and systems to deliver a range of ecosystem services. The Landscape Institute strongly supports a requirement for planning authorities to produce GI strategies, based on the relevant guidance from Natural England, and for all new development to demonstrate appropriate and proportionate contributions to GI. We would wish to see the NPPF make such a requirement explicit.
3. Encourage a systems approach to regional planning: Foster crossworking to achieve synergies and greater resilience, as opposed to silos. Advocate joined-up, cross-boundary, regional strategies that reflect natural rather than political constituencies. These would take into account water management, nature recovery, and green infrastructure networks,
and be guided by landscape character assessment. This requires a coordinated approach from MHCLG and DEFRA and potentially other government departments as well as local policy and decision makers.
4. Value the potential of greenbelt land in contributing to ecosystem services: Develop a comprehensive, coordinated green belt strategy in which development decisions provide opportunities for restoring and enhancing green belt areas –recognising their potential value rather than allowing neglect and decline. Prioritise previously developed sites for new developments, but only after thorough biodiversity and character assessments and seeking to conserve and enhance natural assets and deliver Environmental Net Gain.
5. Continue to apply Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEAs) to plans, policies and projects: Maintain the requirement for SEAs in strategic planning to inform decisions at an early stage and reduce the risk of unintended adverse consequences.
6. Ensure quality and affordability in housing: Local planning authorities should develop and use local design guides and require demonstrable climate resilience and information on whole life costs and sustainability for new buildings, enabling better end user awareness of likely maintenance costs. The objective should be to produce places that are built to last, meet the needs and aspirations of users and have minimal adverse impact on the environment.
7. Recognise the role of landscape in addressing climate change: Wellconsidered and informed siting, layout, topography, orientation and microclimate design and management make significant and cost-effective contributions to climate resilience and energy efficiency, particularly in new housing developments. Good functional landscape design and management adds considerable value for people and nature going well beyond simple aesthetics.
8. Make space for nature: Require local plans to allocate sites for nature protection and recovery, making use of development of all kinds to create opportunities to create and extend GI and Nature Recovery Networks.

GreenMech goes to the heart of operations
The purchase of an Arborist 150D Max from GreenMech has changed operations for the Heart of England Forest, providing usable woodchip to projects across their 7,500 acres of forest habitat.
As the only woodchipper on their fleet, the purchase in February 2024 is compact yet powerful enough to tackle coppicing projects and pruning works as the charity strive to create and manage woodland across Worcestershire and Warwickshire.
The Heart of England Forest (HOEF) is looking to create and manage a 30,000 acre forest with the aim of restoring forest cover, biodiversity
and peoples connection with nature. Ian Hayward is a Senior Forest Ranger and works with a 21-strong forestry team on the broad range of maintenance needed in a woodland setting.
“In the summer we’re access mowing our trail networks, looking after our young trees or conducting biodiversity surveys, then in winter it’s tree planting and maintenance, including coppicing and selective thinning – which is where our new GreenMech woodchipper comes in” he explains.
“As a local company to us, and proud British manufacturer, GreenMech was our first port of call and the machines we saw seriously impressed.
“After trying a couple of models, we opted for the Arborist 150D Max – diesel-powered, capable of processing all the by-products from our forestry work, and meeting both our budget and the needs of the team.”
The 150D Max is the latest addition to GreenMech’s Arborist range, one of the most successful and sought-after 6” chipper collections on the market.
Powered by a 25hp Kubota diesel engine, the Arborist 150D Max utilises GreenMech’s disc-blade chipping technology and ‘NoStress’ in-feed system to offer reliable, durable performance on timber and bushy brash.
Ian goes on to emphasise the simplicity of both the purchase process and the chippers operation.
“We received training on the machine and the team find its straight-forward operation a really positive feature.
“The communication we’ve had from GreenMech throughout has been top-notch, especially from Neal Hussey who went out of his way to help us throughout the procurement process.
“It’s currently our only chipper and will be really helpful when we’re doing coppicing projects as well as being utilised for clearance of material from tree safety and pruning work.”

partnership following an initial £50,000 pledge from ESP Play. This new playground by ESP Play will feature a range of innovative, custom-designed equipment specifically created to meet the needs of children with physical, sensory and cognitive challenges.
The playground will allow children to engage in activities that enhance their development, with future projects earmarked for the North West.
ESP Play Enquiry 19
He continues, “As the forest grows, the amount of maintenance will increase the demand for the Arborist 150D Max with things like selective thinning needed more frequently.
“Here, we can turn the top end brash into woodchip for use on our woodland trails. With this woodchipper we will be able to handle greater volumes of material and repurpose it for more positive projects – it will change how we operate.”

ECOPROTEC provides the solution for slippery paths and patios
Developed for the contract and landscape sectors, LTP’s ECOPROTEC range includes sustainable surface care products - for all types of natural and engineered stone - spanning sealing and protection, cleaning and restoration, and aftercare treatments.
All products are made in the UK and the sealing and protection products benefit from the most advanced research in waterbased technology - combining high performance with low odour and low VOC formulations.
Best-selling treatments for the autumn and winter seasons include ECOPROTEC Black Spot & Algae Remover. Ideal for tackling slippery paths and patio areas, Black Spot & Algae targets organic
residues, including black spot, white spot, lichen, moss, algae and other stains caused by damp and slippery leaf matter. Treatment in the autumn, in particular, breaks down microspores and hyphae before they colonise.
ECOPROTEC Black Spot & Algae Remover is applied neat to swept surfaces with a plastic watering can or light pressure garden spray; the formula then breaks down residue in 2-4 hours and removes stains. Surfaces are then hosed with clean water.
If undiluted solution comes into contact with plants and lawns, rinse with plenty of water. The treatment is suitable for all types of natural and artificial stone, including concrete pavers, and should be applied during
a morning or afternoon of fair weather. Pets should be kept off surfaces during application and until the process is complete.
Following treatment, natural stone surfaces can then be protected with an ECOPROTEC sealer; the range includes the Ultimate Sealer, Patio Sealer and Colour Enhancing Sealer. Barrier treatment, ECOPROTEC Pre Grout Protection is recommended for matt porcelain pavers.
All four treatments are waterbased and provide protection without altering appearance; this prevents absorption of moisture and organic particles, reducing staining and the spread of algae, mould and black spot.

Wet weather urban paving repointing
Longer-term durability increases your works sustainability and budget cost efficiency with GftK’s vdw 850plus paving joint mortars.
The pointing of new paving, and especially for the repointing ‘difficult’ smaller format urban paving, such as stone setts and cobbles used for sections of highways and public spaces like market squares, this is now possible for the long term, even in wet weather, with GftK’s vdw paving joint mortars.
Using the unique and ‘best in-class’ GftK vdw mortars, also means completion on time and without delays due to the weather, or extended periods of disruption with area closures, and you can say goodbye to expensive annual repointing and repeated costly claims for trips and falls.
This durable long-term, cost effective and sustainable performance is well proven on successfully completed projects all around the UK since 2007.
In all these busy public traffic spaces, the previous, largely cement-based, pointing and repointing materials had failed, despite generally being good products, with their deterioration and breakdown significant within just a year or two because of the demanding environments.
The biggest problems were the frequently wet-weather conditions during the pointing, plus the joint size variations, which causes big problems for all cement materials. The areas are also then subjected to exposed weathering and frequent vehicular traffi c, with multiple heavy trucks, plus extensive deicing salt usage in winter, as well as spillages
of ‘all-sorts’, then requiring frequent jet-washing and often the use of mechanical street cleaning machines.
However, all this exposure was and is no problem for the unique GftK vdw 850 paving joint system.
Additionally, these important paving projects could completed on time and on budget, because the jointing works could continue, even in cold, and wet weather, without delays.
These projects all clearly demonstrate GftK is the ideal solution for Local Authorities and their professional teams, to cost effectively refurbish and repoint natural stone paving setts on urban roads and other paved public spaces.

National Memorial Arboretum awarded
‘National Plant Collection’ status
The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire has been awarded its fi rst-ever ‘National Plant Collection’ status by Plant Heritage, recognising its conservation work on the Hamamelis (Witch Hazel) and Amelanchier genera.
This designation helps secure the future of these plants and enhances the Arboretum’s standing as a key centre of horticultural excellence and biodiversity.
The Arboretum’s Hamamelis collection has been awarded Full National Plant Collection status, and its Amelanchier collection now holds Provisional status, to allow time to ensure younger plants establish well. The Arboretum will continue to develop the
Amelanchier collection with plans to apply for full status within a year.
“It has long been a personal passion and ambition to create a nationally recognised collection of Hamamelis at the Arboretum, injecting some winter colour and providing opportunities for visitors to understand and celebrate these stunning plants,” said Andy Ansell, Head of Estates at the National Memorial Arboretum.
“This National Plant Collection status ensures that future generations of visitors will be able to enjoy and learn about this genus in a truly special setting.”

DHF provides guidance on ‘powered gate hinge safety’
To assist its members and the wider industry, Tamworthbased trade association, the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF), has provided advice on powered gate hinge safety, in particular, pertaining to gate hinge failure.
As Nick Perkins, Senior Training & Compliance Officer at DHF explains, when gate hinges suffer a failure, heavy gates can fall over which can prove fatal to those in the vicinity.
One particular example was in 2013, when a heavy steel gate fell and killed 67-yearold, Myra Goldman, when its bottom hinge failed. The coroner investigating her death issued a regulation 28 report to HSE and BSI, ‘to prevent
future death’, and demanding that standards be improved.
In his discoveries, the coroner had noted that a common practice used to prevent gates being lifted off their hinges had led to critical vulnerability, and then to failure.
“At the time of the incident, it was common to fit gates with two hinges, the lower one with the hinge pin facing up, and the top one with the hinge pin facing down.
“In this design, the lower hinge bears the vast majority of the weight, wear and stress caused in normal use; subsequently, it is the most likely hinge to suffer damage or a structural failure,” explains Nick.
“If and when it fails, there is nothing remaining to support the gate resulting in it falling.”
In 2016, the British standard for gates and fences, BS 1722, was revised to prevent this practice leading to further fatalities.
The standard currently allows a limited amount of falling over from the fully upright position, and therefore, there are now at least three means of providing a safe and compliant hinge design; firstly, two hinges and a safety lanyard (limited fall), three hinges (no movement or fall), and two reinforced hinges, any one of which will keep the gate from falling (providing some movement, but no fall).

lightweight and feature a tongue in groove design, that makes the process simple and hassle-free to undertake on site. The panels also integrate seamlessly with the DuraPost galvanised steel fence post system and post infills to ensure installers can turn to Birkdale for a complete fencing solution.
Once in-situ, the weather resistant panels will perform for the longterm. Made from a recyclable and sustainable wood-plastic composite

Finally, the panels are available in three different colourways – exclusive to this particular DuraPost range – Oyster, Teak and Graphite, which ensures there is a solution to complement any existing architectural features. John Abernethie, CEO at Birkdale, commented: “We are delighted to be expanding our DuraPost composite panel range even further. The aim is to provide homeowners, installers and commercial contractors alike with a cost-effective fencing option that they can trust will perform for the long-term.”

Worth Park’s wildflower meadows come to life
In 2022, Euroflor Flower Seed from Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS) transformed three meadow areas within Worth Park as part of a wider conservation project underway by Crawley Borough Council.
This experimental meadow has now been turned into works of art by a nonagenarian painter Beryl Hovell.
Beryl has tracked the development of the park’s meadow area over the past three years. She created her first artwork in 2022, at the age of 90, and has recently completed her third painting. All three paintings are on display in the Community Room at Worth Park.
Beryl explains: “As an artist, it inspired me, and once that vision was in my head, I had
to paint it on canvas. A year later, I painted it again. It was interesting to see the differences and variations in growth, flowers, and colours.
In 2024 I saw it for the third time. Now there were more grasses and fewer flowers.
“When the wind caught the grasses, I loved the movement and tried to capture it in the painting with small dots of colour emerging. A photograph can capture one view, but an artist can condense a number of views into one and inject a feeling of movement that a camera cannot.”
Head Gardener and Curator at Worth Park Stephen Peters first introduced the wildflowers to increase plant diversity and provide an essential habitat and food for pollinators. He used OAS’s biodegradable matting,
FloraFleece, which helped deliver maximum visual and ecological benefit with minimal environmental impact.

Wildflower Turf’s new Enhance range creates a happy
As the UK faces a significant decline in its bee and butterfly populations, Wildflower Turf Ltd has provided an innovative solution to help reverse the ecological crisis.
The new Enhance range has been designed to provide a lifeline for pollinators. It includes speciesspecific Enhance Bees and Enhance Butterflies products to combat Britain’s dwindling natural habitats and maximize nectar and pollen availability.
James Hewetson-Brown, Managing Director of Wildflower Turf Ltd, said: “The Enhance range was created with the specific goal of supporting and increasing pollinator numbers. By incorporating a diverse mix of native wildflowers, we can provide a sustainable habitat that offers food and shelter for bees and butterflies throughout the growing season and even the majority of the year, if left
uncut over the winter months. Pollinators are essential to the UK’s biodiversity and agriculture. They play a crucial role in pollinating crops and wild plants, which in turn supports food production and the health of natural ecosystems.
“However, according to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, the UK has seen a dramatic decline in its bee populations over the last century, with two species now extinct and several others facing significant threats. Intensive farming, habitat loss, and pesticide use have contributed to a 97% reduction in the UK’s wildflower meadows since the 1930s, drastically reducing the habitats available for bees and other pollinators.
“Wildflower Turf Ltd’s Enhance range provides a practical and sustainable solution to help combat the decline in pollinators across Britain.
“The Enhance range is easy to establish and low maintenance, making it a perfect choice for urban planners, developers, and private landowners looking to make a positive environmental impact.
“The product can be used in gardens and parks to roadside verges and corporate landscapes, creating vibrant spaces that contribute to the recovery of pollinator populations.”
James adds: “Our Enhance range is more than just a product; it’s part of a broader effort to restore biodiversity and secure the future of our ecosystems.
“By choosing Enhance, our customers are directly contributing to the survival of pollinators and the overall health of our environment.”

Martin Anderson became Course Manager at Kibworth Golf Club in 2019, aiming to improve the course in Leicestershire.
With a strong connection to the club, Martin’s journey from apprentice to leader shows his dedication to its success. One significant change he made was using DSV EuroGrass seed mixtures, which greatly improved various areas of the course. In 2019, Martin landed the position of Course Manager, a role that held both challenge and promise.
Among the pivotal changes was the introduction of DSV EuroGrass seed mixtures, a decision born out of research and collaboration with trusted partners like Rhys Norville from ReGen Amenity.
“Rhys put us in the direction of DSV,” Martin explains, emphasising the importance of building relationships with reliable suppliers. The trial of DSV’s Dual Use blend delivered promising results, paving the way for its integration into Kibworth’s approach.

SIS Pitches launches ‘onestop’ cricket guide
The team behind the first England Cricket Boardsanctioned hybrid cricket pitch has launched a comprehensive guide to cricket surfaces for professionals groundspeople.
Published by SIS Pitches, which produces SIS Grass Hybrid, a flagship hybrid grass technology, the Guide to Cricket Pitch Systems was designed to help tackle the unique maintenance challenges that come with an increasingly diverse range of options for cricket stadium owners and groundspeople.
The report goes on to highlight pros and cons for all types of cricket surfaces, including innovative options to encourage stakeholders to think beyond the traditional all-natural grass pitch.
Among the solutions the guide showcases are artificial carpet pitches and hybrids, including carpet, artificial and stitched – the latter described as a costeffective option for high-usage venues.
grassroots football, cricket, rugby league and union.
The programme has worked with more than 12,500 clubs and 14,500 volunteers. The Pitch Advisory Service,
formerly the Grounds and Natural Turf Improvement Programme, was launched in 2014 and is funded by Sport England and the Football Foundation, working in association with the FA, ECB, RFL and RFU.
Jason Booth leads the Pitch Advisory Service, he says: “This is a brilliant example of sporting bodies working together to raise the standards of sports surfaces and the understanding of sports turf management practices among grassroots sports clubs across England.
“There has never been more pressure on pitches. Whether that’s the effect of more extreme weather caused by climate change, or more demand as a greater and more diverse range of people want to play sport.
“We all want more people playing – it brings so many health and wellbeing benefits. To enable that, we need to make sure our grassroots pitches are properly maintained – grounds are literally the foundation of sport. We need to recognise
that, value grounds teams, and invest in them.”
One of the clubs that have benefitted from the Pitch Advisory Service is the Ashton Bears Rugby Club in Wigan.
The rugby league outfit, which hosts a total of 25 men’s, women’s, and children’s teams, had been hampered by an unstable pitch that frequently became waterlogged throughout the season.
“Before support from the Pitch Advisory Service, our pitches would regularly have to close for player safety. One surface was only playable for three months of the year,” says Club Secretary, Mark Webster.
“It’s truly transformed our facilities at Bear Park. We now have some of the most resilient pitches in the area – staying open when others have had to close. We’ve also been able to expand to create new women’s teams, something which previously was impossible due to the lack of capacity on the old pitches.”

Globally, the International Cricket Council also sanctioned the use of hybrid surfaces for T20 and 50-over competitions earlier this year.
Paul Taylor, former England international and SIS’s International Cricket Director, said: “Demand for high-quality, durable cricket pitches is on the rise and shows no signs of
slowing down – especially with cricket being reintroduced at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
“Our goal was to provide a one-stop, comprehensive guide for anyone involved in the management and upkeep of cricket surfaces so they can make an informed decision based on budget and volume of play. We’d like to encourage anyone considering a change in their sports surface to get in touch with our team for advice.”

Good GKB deliveries come in threes
A trio of GKB Machines have been installed at SCHLOSS Roxburghe Championship Golf Course, as part of major ongoing investment into the club and wider estate.
After being delivered by dealer Thomas Sherriff & Co in the summer of 2024, the SP100, SPM300 and GKB Combiseeder were put straight to task by Golf Course Manager Ross Ovens, as he and his team of 13 completed autumn renovations on greens, tees and approaches.
The Roxburghe is nestled in the heart of the Scottish Borders and is consistently ranked within the Top 10 Inland Courses in Scotland.
Part of the fleet package, and replacing existing topdressers, was an SP100 and SPM300 from the GKB Sandspreader range.
“These two machines work hand in hand brilliantly, giving us the versatility to
dress greens as well as using the larger machine on the fairways,” said Ross.
“The SPM300 with material handler we’ve found particularly useful for topping up bunkers or loading material into the SP100 quickly and easily.
“Our SP100 is mounted onto our John Deere Gator, and we have retrofitted this with a GPS system which has dramatically improved the accuracy and efficiency of topdressing operations. It gives us both the spread and quality we are looking for.”
Also delivered was a CS160. zWith fewer chemicals available, and a desire to improve our sustainability credentials, it is more important than ever that we have a good overseeding programme in place.
“We didn’t have a seeder previously, so we demonstrated various models and opted for
the GKB Combiseeder because - as a dimple seeder - we found it gave us better germination.
“This will be pivotal in our programme moving forwards as we try to introduce better cultivars into our surfaces, making us more resistant to disease and thereby lowering our reliance on chemicals.”
The trio have recently played a big part in autumn renovation works.

These choices adequately take care of most mowing requirements, apart from those on slopes.
However, that’s where the Ventrac differs from the typical ride-on mower: it can legitimately operate on slopes up to 30 degrees, twice the permitted angle of other mowers and allowing areas that may have not been maintained regularly, to be tamed.

Protect turf ahead of winter
Plant growth regulators (PGRs) play a significant role in a groundsman’s arsenal when it comes to implementing maintenance strategies to improve turf. The correct course of treatment over the winter months can provide protection, as well as a reduction in Poa annua.
The unique formula of Attraxor makes it possible for turf care professionals to meet these needs effectively.
Attraxor can be used to regulate the growth of all managed amenity turf, for example, golf courses, sports pitches and training grounds, at a rate of 375 — 1,500 g/ha. Root growth is promoted, and turf colour and quality are maintained. A lack of sunlight in the winter months can lead to an increase in Poa because the thinning grass can give way to Poa in the spring which can cause ongoing issues in maintenance.
Less light, thinning turf and then the added element of Poa means the turf becomes very high maintenance. With all of this happening throughout the winter when pitches are heavily used, this means that maintenance regimes are tough going. Attraxor contains prohexadione-calcium, an active ingredient that regulates growth and also limits the spread of Poa
annua by reducing seed-head production. It weakens the Poa, while strengthening the sward and improving density.
Contrary to other plant growth regulators that need to be activated by the plant enzymes, Attraxor® can be used later in the season during cooler weather (optimal temperature between 7-20°C).
BASF offers highly effective and innovative turf management solutions for amenity and sports turf sectors, including fungicides, herbicides, bio insecticides and colourants that help improve turf quality, health and aesthetics.
BASF’s expert range of products can be tailored to meet the demands of all turf landscapes, for groundskeepers, greenkeepers, golf course managers and landscape architects, helping to protect the land from diseases, pests and weeds to keep it in top condition through every season. Strathaven Golf Club, in South Lanarkshire, has three fairways - the 6th, 10th and 11th- all of which boast deep and dramatic undulations.
After finding some mowers less than successful at dealing with their rise and fall, Steve
Hunter, Head Greenkeeper, has purchased a Jacobsen SLF530 from Scottish dealer, Fairways GM at Renfrew.
“This machine is all about extra care for tees and aprons and undulating fairways. It follows the line down into them so much better and doesn’t leave any missed bits. The smaller cutting heads, the way it floats and pivots, just help give it a cleaner cut and all-over smooth finish.
“Other machines are a little faster but the benefit of the SLF530 is the quality and definition to the
surfaces. It’s out once a week now, but twice a week minimum in the summer,” he said.
Stuart Cameron, Area Sales Manager from Fairways GM was on hand to advise, deliver and install the machine.
The team at Strathaven GC, comprises five qualified greenkeepers and two apprentices. In 2023, the team won the BIGGA Greenkeeping Project of the Year award.

Suståne improving disease resistance from the ground up
The combination of Suståne 5-2-4 and 5-2-10+Fe is providing the perfect platform for a switch to finer grass species at Ely City Golf Club.
Looking to improve disease resistance from the ground up is Course Manager Alan Magee, who explains how the tried and tested programme from Suståne is the ideal base feed for encouraging bent grass to flourish on the greens at the parkland club.
Ely City is regarded as one of the finest courses in East Anglia, located on the outskirts of Cambridge and delivering a challenging but picturesque 18-holes of mature parkland. Assisted by a team of five, Alan has been at the club for the last two and a half years.
“With the ongoing reduction in chemicals and the drive towards more sustainable practices, as greenkeepers, we’re having to tackle the issue of disease
management in new ways – for me, that’s looking at how we can increase our tolerance with better, more resilient, grass species” he explains.
No stranger to Suståne, Alan has been a longstanding user of their 5-2-4 all natural slow-release nitrogen fertiliser at his previous club in Dorset.
“The 5-2-4 is really the building block for the rest of our inputs. We apply this at eight-week intervals from the spring onwards, with complimentary liquid feeds put down as and when required.”
The original Suståne formula, 5-2-4 promotes enhanced disease suppression and quick green up, without excessive growth. Suitable for most turfgrass environments, Suståne 5-2-4 increases the soils’ ability to hold water and nutrients, improving suppression of plant pathogens and strengthening the plant’s tolerance again heat, drought and other environmental stress factors.
“This product is a fantastic spring starter, getting us moving and providing all the nutrients we need to support bentgrass and strengthen our greens ahead of a busy playing season.”
“For some extra oomph, we use the 5-2-10+Fe every eight weeks from July onwards as we begin to prepare the surfaces for winter” Alan adds. With its 1:2 N to K ratio, Suståne 5-2-10+Fe aids plant hydration and disease suppression, also enhancing chlorophyll production for outstanding turf colour without excessive top growth.
“This combination gives us great consistency and the versatility to adapt to surface requirements depending on the weather.” He continues, “As we pursue a bigger bent population in our greens, I’m a firm believer that if we get the biology right in the soil, the rest of our programme will fall into place.”

Campey UniRake vital to tennis and golf
The Campey UniRake has become a vital part of the machinery fleet at Devonshire Park, with its adaptability making it perfect for use on the grass tennis courts and the 18hole golf course.
Grounds manager, Danny Negus, has worked at the Eastbourne based club, which hosts six major tennis tournaments a year, including the Viking International, for 17 years and has spent the last five in the main role.
Working on tennis and golf across four sites is a unique mixture, but Danny finds that the similarities between greenkeeping and tennis groundsmanship are closer than any other discipline, and this crossover can include machines.
Soon after securing it for the 26 courts under his control, the 18hole golf course was added to his remit in 2018, and since then, the UniRake has turned into a crucial piece of equipment.
“It’s an understatement for me to say how important that piece of equipment is to our maintenance programme. It is hugely important to us, and it’s vital to what we do,” Danny begins.
“The flexibility that the UniRake gives you is one of its unique selling points. If you look at something old school like a chain harrow, you do not have any flexibility or control. With anything you do on that turf, you need to ask yourself why am I doing what I’m doing, and if you don’t have any control over what you’re doing, you should ask why you’re doing it.
“That’s why the UniRake is so good because you have control, and you can adapt it to do what you need to the point where I actually use it for renovations. It was never intended for that, but adjusting the severity of the grooming makes it perfect for it.”

Since April, Belstone FC has been enjoying a host of benefits following its installation.
Husqvarna spoke with Glynne Cherrington, founding member and groundsman at Belstone FC, about the positive impact robotics has had on their football pitch and overall club operations.
“Our Automower 550 EPOS covers the main pitch which is 100m x 64m in size,” he said. “It operates every night from midnight and completes the pitch around mid-afternoon, except on match days, when it isn’t in operation.
“It’s a really efficient system that ensures our pitch is consistently well-maintained. The grass on our main pitch is kept shorter and healthier because we only cut small amounts each day.”
Fleet Line Markers has launched a revolutionary robotic line marker.
The company boasts a strong portfolio of robotic patents, some over a decade old.
The idea for a robotic line marker had been considered since the introduction of the MAQA GPS system, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the project until 2023. It was then that Fleet began collaborating with companies in New Zealand and Australia, leading to the first prototype in December 2023 and a subsequent launch in New Zealand in early 2024.
Fleet, a company with a history spanning over 70 years, has long been a pioneer in line marking technology, winning awards for innovation since the 1960s. One of the first awards to be received was the prestigious IOG Gold Award for the first dry marking machine. Further awards have followed in every decade since. Their past innovations include the Kombi spray jet line marker, the Fastliner ride-on line marker, the Beamrider laser-guided line marker, and the MAQA GNSS GPS system.
The new robotic line marker represents the culmination of decades of experience and expertise. Key features of the new robotic line marker include robust handles for easy transport, a 10-litre drum capacity, solid rotating wheels, ultrasonic sensor protection, and a removable battery. One of the standout features of the new robot is its removable integrated RTK plotter (spike), which allows users to plot pitch positions and features with precision.
The robot communicates via 4G with Fleet’s software and satellites, ensuring accurate pitch lines across various sports. This advanced system is supported by Fleet’s RTK Base Station network, which is included with the purchase.
The robot’s accuracy means it can achieve precision within 5mm and base station extends up to six miles.

Club ensures high standards with Turf Tank
Bristol City FC is a professional football club based in Bristol, England, committed to delivering the highest quality playing surfaces for its players.
To achieve this, the club continuously seeks innovative solutions to ensure both precision and efficiency in their grounds maintenance.
In the summer of 2023, Bristol City FC decided to automate their line marking process with a Turf Tank robot which significantly increased productivity while delivering high precision.
Joe Berry, Head Groundsman at Bristol City FC had previously relied on traditional methods for line marking their
Hand-built and high specification machines
Grassline is a family-owned business with over 40 years of experience in the line marking industry.
It produces a range of quality line marking machines which are supplied across the UK and Europe from local groundsman to some of the most elite clubs. The TITAN spray line marker has been developed in consultation with professional groundsmen.
The result is a hand built, well balanced and robust, high specification spray marker that combines all the needs of the professional groundsman into a single machine and offers exceptional value for money.
Whether its single or multipitch line marking, the TITAN will deliver a smooth, constant and even spray line marking performance.
The battery has a long powerful life and will drive the pump for a full days marking from a single charge.
The battery can be charged whilst in position or can be lifted out for charging away from the marker. An automatic battery charger is supplied as standard.
The pump is both efficient and economical and when used in conjunction with the variable pressure valve, enables the groundsman to control the volume of paint delivered to the twin spray heads for a dense professional line or a more economical line.
The Grassline TITAN offers a variable line width of 50mm,
pitches, a labor-intensive process requiring substantial time and manpower.
As the team found themselves short-staffed, it became clear they needed a more efficient way to keep up with their growing responsibilities: “We were a member of staff down, and we find it hard to recruit, so I had to come up with more creative ways of potentially getting an extra staff member.”
“It definitely saves us time across the whole site, because people normally will pick up little jobs around the pitches where the Turf Tank is marking,” he added.
“So we can keep an eye on the Turf Tank whilst doing jobs that might be potentially put off till last in previous years.
“Probably a half a day’s work on the Turf Tank, which would have been two days’ work with marking for two people.
“If you look at it like that, then it’s saving three and a half days.”
Another important aspect for a professional club is providing the ideal training environment for their players. That’s where training lines play an important role, and with Turf Tank, marking these lines has become effortless.
“We can easily set up training lines using the tablet. Once the layout is saved, it’s as simple as pressing start,” explains Joe.
“Our pitches have multiple tactical lines on, and it was relatively easy to just upload that to the tablet. You have to be patient and maybe go out and do a couple of dry runs once you’ve programmed it to the robot, but once they’re in, it’s saved us countless hours, and it wasn’t too hard at all.”
75mm or 100mm (2, 3 and 4 inch). Twin Spray Heads You can choose to use a single spray delivery for economical or normal line marking or both sprays for a double spray delivery but in a single pass.
The TITAN’s tank holds 30 litres of mixed marking paint and has an integral mixing system as standard. The paint concentrate should be thoroughly mixed/diluted with water in a suitable container and then poured into the tank.
After the mixed paint has been poured into the tank, the Integrated Mixing System can be activated to continue the mixing process before spraying commences and during breaks in spraying.
The system is activated by use of the pressure valve located under the hood which opens/ closes the system.
When activated, the paint will by pass the spray heads and flow back into the tank. The pressure valve can also be used to regulate the pump pressure and consequently the volume of paint being delivered to the spray heads.
This reduced pressure enables the Titan to be used for marking hard sports surfaces, tarmac, concrete, car parks, playgrounds etc where a lesser volume of paint is needed to mark non porous surfaces.
All line marking paints are safe, non-hazardous, organic and bio-degradable.

Suståne delivers more than three decades of consistent quality
As the old saying goes ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!’.
That’s certainly the motto for Came Down Golf Club in Dorchester, who have been using a nutritional programme from Suståne on their greens for over 30 years and explain that it continues to give them controlled growth, outstanding colour and enhanced plant health year after year.
Established in 1896, Came Down is a chalk-downland course nestled in the Dorset countryside which has strong historical links with some of golf’s most important institutions including The R&A, The Ryder Cup and The Open. While James Lockwood has been at the venue for 18 years, and Head Greenkeeper for the last three, he admits that the club’s relationship with Suståne goes much further back. “We think Suståne has been used here for roughly 35 years, making us one
of the first clubs in the UK to use their products!”
James’ current programme, constructed in conjunction with Suståne’s Russell Riley and local distributors Agrovista, includes Suståne 10-1-4 as a spring starter, 5-2-10+Fe applied at lower rates and regular intervals throughout the summer and 5-2-4 to keep the greens ticking over in winter. “This is the tried and tested combination which works perfectly for us” he says.
“Firstly it’s great that it’s all organic. The club are keen to utilise more sustainable solutions and this programme, in conjunction with some of our cultural practices, has helped us to pretty much eliminate the use of fungicides. Secondly we like the control it gives us – no massive flushes of growth, just a steady, healthy growth pattern that leaves the greens looking immaculate and playing well year-round.”
James adds, “We have a couple of greens in shaded spots that have previously struggled with Fusarium. With a bit of trial and error, we’ve found that upping the rate of Suståne 5-210 through the back end of the summer, and 5-2-4 in the winter has helped us to limit the impact on these specific areas. It’s becoming increasingly important that we all try and resolve these issues using science and clever microbiology rather than relying on chemicals.”
“Another thing we like is that the granules are nice and fine which means we can apply it exactly when we need to without risking any interruption to play.”
He concludes, “It’s testament to the continual quality and results that we rarely have to stray away from the programme that has been so pivotal to things here at Came Down for so long.”

COMPO puts life back into the greens at Kilsyth GC
Two products from COMPO EXPERT have helped to put some much-needed life back into the greens at Kilsyth Golf Club, according to Head Greenkeeper Brian Hill.
Brian has been at Kilsyth Golf Club in central Scotland for just over 30 years. Throughout that time, he has always worked with Agrovista Amenity, the exclusive national distributor of COMPO EXPERT’S turf products in the UK.
Brian’s first point of contact at Agrovista Amenity is Ramsay MacGregor and it was Ramsay who recommended the COMPO EXPERT range of products to him.
“I trust Ramsay 100% because I know he is going to give me something that works, and it is not going to bust the bank,” said Brian.
“I’m going to get a great product every time from him and that is why I took on-board his suggestion about COMPO EXPERT.”
Club’s success with Sierrablen Plus
ICL Controlled release fertiliser technology has helped to transform the fairways at Coventry Hearsall Golf Club.
Chris Low, the Course Manager at Coventry Hearsall Golf Club, has witnessed outstanding results since introducing ICL’s Sierrablen Plus Spring & Summer CalMag 23-0-5 + 7CaO + 2.5MgO controlled release fertiliser (CRF) into the club’s fairway programme.
After seeing numerous positive posts on social media and conducting thorough research, Chris decided to incorporate the fertiliser into his turf management programme to help boost turf density and health.
The availability of larger 500kg bags, which are both costeffective and easy to apply with a tractor-mounted spreader, further influenced his decision.
Controlled release fertilisers (CRFs) are engineered to release nutrients gradually, ensuring more precise and targeted nutrient delivery to turfgrass.
This is achieved through a coating process that regulates nutrient release, guaranteeing that the turf receives essential nutrients at the right time and in the right quantities.
This method not only maximises the efficiency of nutrient uptake but also minimises waste and environmental impact.
Sierrablen Plus CalMag 230-5 + 7CaO + 2.5MgO can be applied from early in the growing season through to summer, providing over five months of sustained healthy plant growth. The controlled release of nitrogen supports
continuous development, while added magnesium enhances the turf’s green colour and calcium increases cell strength.
Since adopting Sierrablen Plus Spring & Summer CalMag 230-5 + 7CaO + 2.5MgO, the improvements in turf density at Coventry Hearsall Golf Club have been nothing short of remarkable.
The fairways have drawn praise from both members and visitors alike. “Members and guests have commented that the fairways are like carpets and the best they have ever been,” says Chris.
The benefits of Sierrablen Plus extend beyond just aesthetics and playability.
The fertiliser’s controlled release technology provides sustained nutrition for over 5 months,
reducing the need for frequent applications and thereby saving time and resources.
Additionally, the environmental benefits of using a controlled release fertiliser, such as reduced leaching and runoff, align with the club’s commitment to sustainable practices.
Sierrablen Plus Spring & Summer CalMag has proven to be a transformative addition to the turf management programme at Coventry Hearsall Golf Club.
“We’ve seen a noticeable improvement in the turf’s resilience and overall health, making our maintenance efforts more effective and efficient,” Chris notes.
COMPO EXPERT believes in sustainable, integrated turf management by focusing on modern fertilisation concepts, consistent regeneration of growth and optimal support of the plant’s own physiological processes. All of which promote vitalisation, stress tolerance and root development while providing optimum turf quality.
The innovative product range includes specialty mineral and stabilized fertilisers, slow and controlled release fertilisers, water soluble and liquid fertilisers as well as biostimulants, trace elements and soil conditioners.
Brian first applied Ferro Top microgranular fertiliser to his greens late last year and the success of that product resulted in him applying Floranid Twin Eagle NK, a slow-release fertiliser, this year.
“We first applied Ferro Top in autumn and the results I got coming out of winter were brilliant,” he said.
“It has a nice bit of iron in it and makes the sward nice and dense.
“I then went on to using the Floranid Twin Eagle NK – which I applied at the end of June and the results have been phenomenal. We haven’t got an irrigation system here, and I’ve only got a bowser, so my timing of products is key. As soon as some rain was forecast, we applied the Floranid Twin Eagle NK. Honestly, I put it on and couldn’t believe itthe greens have been unbelievable. I’ll look at going again with it in September and then I’ll apply Ferro Top to prepare for winter.
“The greens are so green, so lush, and the COMPO products have put so much life back into them.
“A lot of fertilisers claim to do amazing things, but COMPO products actually do what they say they will. We don’t have a big budget and therefore every product I put down needs to work. With the COMPO products I know that I’m going to get results every time.”

The importance of IPX4-certified tools
There is no doubt that landscapers value reliability above all else when it comes to their tools.
In challenging environments, and with long and arduous tasks the norm, professionals should always be able to rest in the knowledge that their equipment is up to the job.
This is even more important in the UK environment, where cold and wet weather can create additional issues.
Therefore, as we enter into some of the wettest months, landscaping professionals will certainly benefi t from batterypowered machines that can maintain excellent performance levels when contending with heavy rain.
Reuben Wilson, Marketing and Product Executive at STIHL GB, explains why landscaping professionals should look to tools with genuine IPX4 ratings in order to ensure limited downtime.
What is IPX4?
The International Electrotechnical Commission is the body that created Ingress Protection ratings, otherwise known as an IP rating.
The rating is used to grade electronics on their resistance to
the intrusion of substances like dust and liquids that can reduce their functionality.
An electronic device with an IPX4 certification, which is globally recognised as a water resistance rating, should be protected from water splashing at it from all directions.
This means it can be exposed to water from both splashing and spraying without breaking. Simply put, the equipment can be used in wet conditions.
All batteries in STIHL’s AS and AP Systems have a formal IPX4 certification, allowing landscapers to be confident that STIHL tools are both functional and safe, even in wet weather conditions.
How is the rating tested?
To achieve IPX4 certification, a tool must be tested to the set standard. This involves exposing the object to water for ten minutes or longer.
During this time the tool is sprayed from all directions from a spray nozzle or oscillating tube.
Following this period of exposure, the device is inspected for signs of intrusion. This could be discolouration, deformation, or any physical damage due to water ingress.
STIHL experts perform extensive testing at STIHL’s Research and Development facilities to ensure STIHL AS and AP System batteries meet the standard required.
With that, while STIHL experts will always recommend storing batteries in a safe, dry location and advise against submersion in water, they will perform as expected in wet conditions.
Battery-powered tools
Professionals are continuing to shift towards battery-power more than ever to support the
wider industry’s sustainability efforts.
However, when making this switch landscapers will want to know that their tools can still offer excellent quality.
All of STIHL’s AS and AP System batteries are IPX4 certified, meaning that they offer reliability to professionals who can depend on their tools and batteries to perform in the most challenging of conditions.
