“I wrote this book for computer users – ordinary, everyday professionals and students who spend hours every week in front of the computer, whether they like it or not. The tools in this book are tools I use to make my life easier.” –Beth Ziesenis

Whether alphabetizing a list, organizing a meeting or scanning through your computer to find and delete large files to make room on your hard drive, Beth Ziesenis has found tools and apps that can make any part of your computer life easier and less complicated. These are the ones you discover late at night when you’re still in the office – the ones you are excited to install and share with your colleagues with an immediate “Hey, look what I found!” email. Inspiration for writing Upgrade to Free: The Best Free & Low-Cost Online Tools & Apps came about accidentally. In the summer of 2007, Beth Z posted a question on a forum for association executives: “What are your favorite free and low-cost tech tools?” Within two days, she had a list of 60-plus tools. Beth Z assembled the list and distributed it to the forum. Soon she started receiving requests to put the list into newsletters and magazines. She eventually created a webpage to put all the applications on at www.askbethz.com. The chapters are organized by topic and include tips by the author relating how the applications have helped with her life. Beth Z’s quirky sense of humor fills the pages and makes this book an entertaining and enlightening read.

From skyscrapers to small pieces of jewelry, welders are needed to safely bond materials for everyday use. Industries rely on the expertise of highly skilled welders because lives depend on the quality of welders’ work. Welding is not just crafting two pieces of metal together, but requires technological savvy, too. “We are seeing more and more technology coming into play, so it doesn’t have the stigma of welders being high school dropouts that it once had,” says Dave Cotner, head of the welding program at Pennsylvania College of Technology. Welders can now work with newer technologies like lasers, electron beams and ultrasounds from behind a computer console operating a remote device. TechCareers: Welding Technology provides an in-depth guide to the job-market potential of welding as well as what requirements are needed to become a welder. Employment overviews, skill requirements, a comprehensive list of welding programs in the United States and everything else needed for a career in the welding and metal-working business are also explained in detail in the book, making this book a must-read for those interested in a welding career.

“Perseverance and play, the willingness to try and the practice of making choices are all you need to succeed.” –Darla Johnson
The Art of Listening: Intuition & Improvisation in Choreography by DARLA JOHNSON Modern dance has evolved over time to encompass a wide variety of definitions. Stepping out of comfort zones and following the voice of improvisation is a necessity for choreographers. It is through the “unfamiliar” and “uncomfortable” that creating art with the body becomes a reality. “Listening is exactly where we need to start,” says Allison Orr in the book’s introduction. The world of dance revolves around listening to other dancers, students, the environment, and one’s self. The Art of Listening: Intuition & Improvisation in Choreography takes the reader on a guided tour of the different landmarks of listening needed to take a dance from idea to actuality, from creating the initial concept to feedback and collaboration. This book also explores how to listen to and express your creative voice, engage in creative processes and what practices work for each person as a choreographer, along with practical advice on rehearsal and performance etiquette. Those desiring to choreograph professionally will gain insight into what it takes to keep an improvisational mentality, the most basic tool for dance-making.

“Every career comes with its own set of safety regulations and potential hazards. The job of wind turbine repair technician is no different in that respect from any other job.” –Keith Plantier and Karen Mitchell Smith
Electromechanical Principles of Wind Turbines: For Wind Energy Technicians by KEITH PLANTIER AND KAREN MITCHELL SMITH $49.95 (Softback) ISBN 978-1-934302-54-5 1st Edition December 2009 $34.95 (ebook) ISBN 978-1-934302-79-8 December 2009 Keith Plantier began his career in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear mechanic and received an Associate of Science degree in Nuclear Technology from Thomas Edison State College. Plantier continued his education at Texas Tech University and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering. Plantier returned to West Texas to become program director for the Texas Wind Energy Institute at Texas State Technical College. Karen Mitchell Smith earned her English degree from Texas Tech University in 1985 and, since then, has been a college recruiter, teacher and long-time writer. An accomplished motivational speaker, she also presents seminars for educators and high school students. 23
Wind turbines are relatively simple machines. Slow rotational energy and torque of the turbine converts into a highspeed rotation that is fed into the generator. From there, the generator produces the necessary electricity, which is transmitted to the substation for consumption. This is really an oversimplification of the process, as there are thousands of components – both stationary and moving – that are required for all of this to happen continuously. A wind turbine technician will need to be familiar with all of the equipment inside a turbine. In addition, the job is autonomous by nature, and there will not be a lot of help readily available while at a remote work site. It is critical to be able to perform normal maintenance tasks, identify issues that may arise during time spent at the turbine and accurately troubleshoot when problems come up. The topics covered in Electromechanical Principles of Wind Turbines allow students to become familiar with the components of a typical wind turbine and how they relate and interact with one another. Additionally, students will learn how to successfully operate and maintain turbines safely, reliably and efficiently. This book includes information on converting metric and United States standard units and information on required safety procedures.

“Today’s hand tools are expressions of humanity’s desire to do something quickly and easily. If technicians do not know about tools that will save them time, or how to use those tools, then they are wasting money as well as time.” –Thomas Dutton
The Hand Tools Manual by THOMAS DUTTON
Have you ever been confused as to when you should use a flex head, sliding T-handle or speeder handle socket wrench? Do you find yourself wondering why you’re stripping out bolt heads and screws? Has this left you wanting to know where you could find out which hand tool is right for the job so you aren’t making more work for yourself? Well, be frustrated no more! The evidence of intelligence through the development and use of hand tools distinguishes humans from all other species of animals on earth. Though hand tools have evolved over the ages, one thing remains true: Good workmanship depends on the knowledge and expertise of the user. Perfect for do-it-yourself projects, this book details the mechanical construction and proper repair of the most commonly used gear to ensure hand tool mastery.

Typically, college success textbooks focus on traditional higher education academic skills: note taking, test strategies, and research. However, in response to the increasing trend – especially at two-year colleges – of students immediately entering the workforce upon graduation, Taking Charge: Your Education, Your Career, Your Life directly contextualizes these academic skills with the soft skills necessary to succeed in the workplace. In addition, all the subject areas covered in the book are related to personal growth so that students may see that these skills are not used in isolation but are, rather, an integral part of the ongoing development everyone experiences in life. “Lust, Violence, Religion: Life in Historic Waco illuminates Waco’s history as colorful, controversial, violent and often tragic. Essays in this book document the rich and complex history of Waco and McLennan County, Texas.” –T. Michael Parrish, Baylor University
Lust, Violence, Religion: Life in Historic Waco Compiled by BRADLEY T. TURNER
With this eyebrow-raising title, Bradley T. Turner has created a book of Waco history, which is both enlightening and intriguing. From the circuit riders in the late 1800s to the Vietnam War in 1967 and their effects on Waco, Texas, Turner has fashioned a book that is an engaging book on local history. Chapter topics range from the history of Camp MacArthur to the horrific tornado of 1953. The chapter “Lord Have Mercy” goes into detail about the terrible tornado that struck Waco in May of 1953. From the irony of the Indian saying that no tornado could ever strike the area to the catastrophic damage left in the tornado’s wake, this chapter gives fascinating insight into the experiences of those who survived. Other essays paint a history of circuit-riding preachers, prostitution, a deadly duel over Baylor University, Cameron Park’s rich history, racial division and relations in Waco and reaction to the Vietnam War. Bradley T. Turner compiled the essays he wrote in graduate school to form Lust, Violence, Religion: Life in Historic Waco. He added five more from colleagues. Photographs in the book come from sources including The Texas Collection, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and from the Turner Family Collection.
