Hi, My Name is Loco and I Am a Racist By Caroline Josephine
When living in a foreign country, the topic of race is always going to come up. And who wants to talk about race, let alone admit that they might have negative feelings towards someone of another race, especially while living in that race’s home country? In his debut novel, Hi, My Name is Loco and I Am a Racist, Baye McNeil explores what led up to his proclamation that hey, I am a racist!
Tsuki: So Loco, I know you’ve already answered this question a million times, but I have to ask it anyway… what’s the book about? Loco: Well… this book is about my experiences in both Japan and the USA. But the real meat of the book is my response to the behaviors of Japanese people. The feelings that were brought up inside of myself in response to this were incredibly alarming. And the issues that these feelings brought up were some that I had thought were buried and long gone. It was shocking for me when they resurfaced, and I was forced to actually deal with the racism that was going on inside of myself. Tsuki: What was your biggest inspiration for writing this book? Loco: The foreigners living in Japan and their behavior were hands down the biggest inspiration for writing this. Especially the way that foreigners respond to their treatment by Japanese people. And then turning around and seeing how foreigners responded to each other… it was amazing to see how everyone’s experiences really shaped their actions.
