Covering the Tigers Interviews
When possible, interview requests for Head Coach Travis Williams and Tiger players should be directed through the Athletic Media Relations Office. On game day, Coach Williams and selected Tigers will be available following the NCAA “cooling off” period.

TSU Media Policies
All requests for working media at home games in the Gentry Center should be directed to Tennessee State University Athletic Media Relations on outlet letterhead or via facsimile by Wednesday of game week. No requests will be honored on game day. Credentials will be screened to help ensure a working press area. Unless prior pick-up arrangements are made, credentials can be picked up two hours prior to tipoff at the will call ticket booth. Credentials WILL NOT be mailed.
Each team’s visiting radio station will have a courtesy line provided. The visiting radio section is located at the end of the media tables behind the visiting team’s bench.
Team Video
An area is provided for visiting teams to video the contest for coach’s film. Each member of the video team must be credentialed. Contact the Athletic Media Relations staff for information.

Founded in 1912, Tennessee State University has grown dramatically from a small college to two campuses: the 500acre main campus and the downtown Avon Williams campus which is located in the heart of Nashville near the State capitol. The diverse student population of more than 8,000 represents 46 states and 45 countries. TSU has been listed for 11 consecutive years in the U.S. News & World Report “Guide to America’s Best Colleges.” Tennessee State University is a comprehensive, urban, coeducational land-grant university offering 45 bachelor degrees and 24 master’s degrees. Doctoral programs include biological sciences, psychology, public administration, computer information systems engineering, administration and supervision, and curriculum and instruction. When you think about Tennessee State University, many things come to mind – a rich heritage and legacy in athletics, academics, entertainment, research and service. Tennessee State University has long been a rising star among universities across the country. It is designated as one of the best public historically black colleges and universities in the nation, and it’s not by accident. Tennessee State University is among the few historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) with a chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, the oldest and largest freshman honor society in the United States and a Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the most prestigious honor society comprising all academic disciplines. Today, Tennessee State University’s student enrollment is more than 8,000. There are more than 400 faculty and more than 1,200 staff who are part of the university’s team. Additionally, the university’s rich strength in embracing diversity is evident with 45 countries and 46 states representative of the student body. The beauty and accessibility of the university’s main campus is a plus with now 65 buildings on more than 450 acres.
SERVE
Complimenting the main campus is a newly renovated downtown campus that features a simulated stock-trading center, a student computer laboratory and continuing education, distance learning and multimedia services. The university is arming students with the intellectual resources to compete in a global environment. In support of that, important partnerships have been established with leading global companies such as Boeing, Raytheon, Dell, IBM and others, in which both funding and servicelearning opportunities are currently active.

The DAVIS BUILDING is topped by its landmark cupola and houses the Department of Languages, Literature and Philosophy and the Thomas E. Poag Auditorium. The building, which once housed the administrative offices, is named after TSU’s second president Dr. Walter S. Davis.
KEAN HALL, a simplified Art Deco style gymnasium erected in 1951 at a cost of $1,500,000 was dedicated Wednesday, November 25, 1953. The structure is located on the south side of the campus at John Merritt Boulevard and 33rd Avenue, North and is named after former TSU Football head coach and Athletic Director, Henry A. Kean. The building contained at the time of its construction: a gymnasium, health, physical education and recreation classrooms, laboratories, staff offices, and facilities for indoor intramural sports, staff and student recreation and physical therapy. The building was vacated in 1980 when the HPER moved to the new Gentry Center Complex. The 300,000 renovation, approved in 1986-1987, connected the building to the Floyd-Payne campus center in 1991. The building became a recreational facility for the general campus population. It also serves as the headquarters for the Air Force ROTC, TSU Athletics and the academic and Hall of Fame.
The PERFORMING ARTS CENTER is located adjacent to the east side of the existing Strange Music Building. The facility houses the Theater, Television, Radio and Music Departments and includes a complete renovation of the Strange Music Building. A performance theater seating for 400 was constructed as part of the new building. Theater department spaces include classrooms, support spaces and offices. Rehearsal and production facilities are provided for television and radio departments, as well as offices and support areas. The music department has new laboratory facilities, practice rooms, classrooms, offices and an expanded band practice room and support facilities. The project included approximately 30,400 sq. ft. of renovated space (the Strange Music Building) and 43,000 sq. ft. of new construction.

The FLOYD-PAYNE CAMPUS CENTER contains various student and administrative offices, campus bookstore, post office, and dining services. The Center is named after former TSU student and fifth president, Otis L. Floyd, and long-time Dean of Students and Vice-President of Student Affairs, Joseph A. Payne. The BROWN-DANIEL LIBRARY was erected in 1976 and opened for service during the summer of 1977. This present structure has 82,000 square feet of space with special study and research facilities for faculty and graduate students, and a Special Collections Room which houses the University’s historical archives, theses, dissertations, and other special materials. The library is named in memory of Library Directors, Martha M. Brown and Lois H. Daniel.
The AVERITTE AMPHITHEATER located in the center of campus; landscaped and has permanent seating for 200. The structure is named after Laura M. Averitte, author of Tennessee State University’s alma mater.

DR. PORTIA SHIELDS led the design and build of state-of-the-art science and technology labs and enhanced the academic performance of medical students. Most recently, Shields served as chief executive officer and chief academic officer of Concordia College in Selma, Ala., from November 2007 to December 2009.
UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT
At Concordia, she improved academic programs and institutional effectiveness, raised campus academic standards and enhanced the college’s financial operations. Shields also helped Concordia address accreditation concerns. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) initially placed Concordia on probation for issues concerning 17 different requirements and standards. In its most recent report, SACSCOC cited only two issues remaining for the college to address.
Dr. Portia Shields was appointed to the presidency of Tennessee State University effective January 2, 2011 – the first female to assume the role of President in the history of the institution. Shields assumed the executive post at Albany State University in 1996, becoming its first female president and retiring in 2005 after serving in the capacity for eight years. As the seventh president of the university, Shields inherited a campus recovering from the destructive flood waters of the Flint River, which had consumed nearly two-thirds of the 204-acre campus in 1994. Her leadership was critical to the university’s comeback, as she spearheaded a $153 million rebuilding program that revitalized the institution. Perhaps her most notable achievement was the success in raising funds and external support for the University. She was instrumental in securing an unprecedented $3-million donation from Georgia-born performing artist Ray Charles in 2002, and procured more than $25 million in external grant funds in the following academic year. Prior to her leadership at Albany State, Shields served as Dean of the School of Education, Howard University, Washington, D.C. where she initiated the University’s first comprehensive early learning and pre-college preparation program in health science. She previously served as director of medical education and biomedical communications in the University’s College of Medicine where she
Shields has wide range of stellar experiences and accomplishments in the field of higher education with appointments and affiliations with the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, National Association for Equal Opportunity In Higher Education, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Inc., American Council on Education, Association of American Colleges and Universities, and Communities in Schools of Georgia. Additional memberships include Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., National Council of Negro Women, and Phi Delta Kappa Honor Society. She is a published author and a well-known public speaker. She has conducted and participated in more than 100 workshops and seminars on higher education issues, teacher education issues, medical and health-care concerns, educational policy issues, international education and faculty development, academic collaborations, retention and high-stakes testing. She served as editor of and contributed two articles to Reflections on Albany State University and contributed to more than 70 publications focused on current issues in higher education, including USA Today (March 21, 2002) and Newsday (March 10, 2002). Other selected collaborative and independent works include contributions to the publication of a reference book entitled Tests and Teaching Quality, a report of the Committee on Assessment and Teacher Quality of the National Research Council, and collaborative and independent publications focusing on higher education administration, medical and health concerns, administrative issues at HBCUs, professional development schools, education, and parenting and teacher education. Authored chapter entitled, “An African American Woman’s Presidency at a Historically Black University: A Personal Journey,” with other University presidents (publication in process). Shields received her primary, secondary and college education in her native home, Washington, D.C. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the District of Columbia Teachers College, one of three institutions later merged to form the University of the District of Columbia. She earned a Master of Arts degree in Education from George Washington University, Washington, D.C., and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from the University of Maryland at College Park. Additional scholarly research and studies were completed at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Columbia University, New York, New York; American University, Washington, D.C.; and University of the District of Columbia. Named in 2004 as one of Georgia’s 50 Most Influential Women by the Georgia Informer, Shields is distinguished as one of the founding presidents of the American University of Ethiopia and a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education.

TERESA PHILLIPS Teresa Lawrence-Phillips became head of the Tennessee State University athletics department in April of 2002. As director, the athletic department has made tremendous strides on the playing field, campus, community and classroom.
Phillips also has the distinction of being the first woman ever to coach an NCAA Division I men’s basketball team en route to being named one of the “101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports” by Sports Illustrated in 2003. She was also named as the Second Most Influential Woman in Sports in Tennessee by The Tennessean newspaper. In addition, she was named USA Today’s National Coach of the Year in 1990 and was a three-time OVC Coach of the Year selection. No stranger to athletic success, she was head coach of the Lady Tigers basketball program at TSU for 11 seasons from 1989-2000. Phillips guided the 1993–94 squad to the program’s first-ever OVC regular season crown, the Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship, and the team’s first appearance ever in the NCAA tournament. Phillips and her staff enjoyed their most successful season in 1994–95 as the Lady Tigers (22–7, 12–4 OVC) shared the regular season title. TSU claimed its second consecutive tournament title and a trip to the NCAA tournament. She has been invited twice to serve as an assistant coach for USA Basketball (1995 and 1999) and was invited to serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic Festival North Squad. Prior to her stint at TSU, Phillips was head coach at Fisk University for four years. She guided the Bulldogs to WIAC League and Tournament Championships in 1987 and 1988 and was tabbed WIAC Coach of the Year twice (1987, 1988). She compiled a 68-34 overall record with the Bulldogs. She graduated from Vanderbilt University with a bachelor’s degree in Economics before obtaining a Masters in Education from TSU in 1999. Phillips, who helped recruit six All-Americans and seven All-State players, served as an assistant coach with the Lady Commodores (1981-1984) winning the N.I.T. in 1983. Phillips earned several honors as a three-year letter winner at Vanderbilt. She was the first recipient of the Lady Commodore Athlete of the Year honor, given to the best all-around female athlete. In addition, she received the Nashville Civitan’s Sportsmanship Award in 1979 and 1980.
Association, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, the NCAA Championship and Competition Cabinet and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She is an inaugural member of the Girls’ Preparatory School Sports Hall of Fame and a 2008 inductee of the Lookout Mountain Sports Hall of Fame. She lives in Nashville with her two sons, Micah and Kyle.

Some accomplishments under the Phillips’ administration include the launching of the first official website for TSU Athletics in August of 2002, the revitalization of the Big Blue Booster Club, the recognition of Ohio Valley Conference Scholar Athletes, and conference championships in volleyball, women’s track including a PGA minority national championship in men’s golf.
Community oriented, Phillips has assisted with the National Youth Sports Drug Program and has been appointed to several boards and committees which include: NCAA Basketball Rules, NCAA Championship Cabinet, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Boys’ & Girls’ Club, the Vanderbilt Alumni Advisory Board and the Nashville Sports Council Executive Board. She has held memberships in several organizations, including the Black Coaches

The History of the Ohio Valley Conference
Entering its 65th year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. In May 2011 the Conference expanded for the second time in four years, adding Belmont University which begins competition this year. The addition of Belmont gives the OVC 12 members, the most the league has had at one time in its illustrious history. The move added a second team in the city of Nashville and was the first addition to the league since Southern Illinois University Edwardsville joined in 2008. SIUE began regular season play last year, and is eligible for postseason play this year. The 2009-10 school year saw a change in leadership as Beth DeBauche was named the seventh full-time Commissioner in league history on July 28, 2009. She is currently one of just five females to be the head of a Division I conference, and one of just eight to lead a Division I conference all-time. The last three commissioners of the OVC have moved onto jobs as the commissioner of the Big Ten, Big 12 and the MidAmerican Conferences. The OVC’s proud history past dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State, Charles (Turkey) Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC. In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became one of the first non-traditionally black mid-southern institutions to accept a black student. In 1958, Marshall Banks earned athletically-related aid at Morehead, which signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. In 1961, Murphy earned all-conference recognition as a halfback in football. With racial barriers broken, the rest of the institutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to African-Americans. Through the past 63 years, 15 teams have won or shared the league’s football title. The list is led by Eastern Kentucky, winner of 20 outright or shared football crowns, including both the 2007 and 2008 championships, as they compiled a 15-1 league record over that time period. Only one other Football Championship Subdivision school (UMass) has won more Conference titles than the Colonels. Among OVC teams, former member Middle Tennessee is next with 11 titles, followed by Tennessee Tech with nine, and Murray State and former member Western Kentucky with eight apiece. Eastern Illinois has claimed five football crowns (including the 2009 title) while Jacksonville State, Morehead State, Tennessee State and former members Evansville and East Tennessee State have captured two apiece. Austin Peay, Southeast Missouri (which captured its first crown in 2010), UT Martin and former member Youngstown State have one title apiece. A sampling of former OVC football stars, some of whom were All-Americans during their collegiate careers before achieving stardom at the professional ranks, include Jim Youngblood and Larry Schreiber (Tennessee Tech), Phil Simms (Morehead State), Virgil Livers and Dale Lindsey (Western Kentucky), Myron Guyton and Chad Bratzke (Eastern Kentucky), Cortland Finnegan (Samford) and Tony Romo (Eastern Illinois). In 2008, former Tennessee State standout Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie became just the fourth NFL First Round draft pick in OVC history when he was selected 16th overall by the Arizona Cardinals. He would break into the starting lineup halfway through his rookie season and started at cornerback for the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. The OVC has had at least one former player named a NFL Pro Bowl selection in four of the past five seasons.

2012-13 Men’s Basketball Season Outlook The 2012-13 season outlook for the Tennessee State men’s basketball program looks bright. The Tigers are coming off of one of the most successful seasons in recent history and the team returns four starters. While Tennessee State returns most of its impact players from a year ago, the team will feature a new head coach in Travis Williams. After coaching at the school as an assistant for three seasons, Williams was awarded the head coach position in April. As the top assistant last season, Williams helped restore a winning attitude to the Tigers’ program. The Big Blue recorded just nine wins in 2009-10, while improving to 14 victories in 2010-11. Last season, the Tigers completed a 20-13 mark. This season, Williams will have the luxury of coaching an experienced team led by senior forward Robert Covington and junior guard Patrick Miller. Last season, Covington led the team in points per game and rebounds per game with 17.8 and 7.9, respectively. At sixfoot-nine, Covington is always a threat to score in the low-post, but he really shines from behind the three-point line. He attempted the most three pointers on the team last season (145), but he also made the highest percentage of his shots from behind the arc (.448). While Covington excelled at making outside shots last season, he also had the benefit of playing with a point guard who could feed him the ball in Miller. The Chicago Ill. native led the team with 118 assists last season and also averaged double-digits points per game (10.8). Miller also played his part on the defensive end of the floor, tallying a team-high 51 steals and 120 rebounds. Covington and Miller will play an integral part for the Tigers this season, but the team also has good leadership across the board with four seniors. Two of those seniors are Jordan Cyphers and Kellen Thornton. Cyphers, a guard who transferred from Utah, averaged eight points per contest in his first season at Tennessee State and was another deep shooting threat- out of his 198 shots, 121 were from beyond the three-point line. Cyphers made 44 of those shots for a percentage of .364. Thornton is another transfer that TSU picked up from Illinois State, and he made a splash with the team in his first season. Thornton was third on the team in points per game (9.1) and second in both field goal percentage (.525) and rebounds per contest (4.5). Rounding out the starting five is sophomore M.J. Rhett. Rhett, a native of Hopkins S.C., started 26 games last season as a freshman and played mostly the power forward position. Rhett had the second most rebounds on the team last year (147) and recorded 14 blocks. The non-conference schedule looks daunting with games at Missouri and BYU, but the Tigers hope that a tough opening slate will allow them to improve upon last year’s second place finish in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Catching the Madness
Although Tennessee State fell one game short of making the NCAA Tournament, the team was invited to play in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament featuring Mid-Major programs from across the country. The appearance marked the third time in program history that the Tigers have made a postseason tournament since joining Division I. The Tigers lost their last postseason appearance to Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 1994.

On Nov. 20 of last year, Tennessee State made history by notching its first win over an SEC opponent. The Tigers won a one-point contest over the University of South Carolina in the opening round of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational. Then, the Tigers made history again by defeating its first ranked opponent with a 72-68 victory over thenunbeaten and No. 7 ranked Murray State. Robert Covington led the team in points on both nights with 16 against South Carolina and 16 versus Murray State.
Williams Takes the Wheel
Travis Williams was named the 16th head coach of the Tennessee State Tigers on Arr. 13, 2012. He worked under exhead coach John Cooper for three seasons before being handed the reigns once Copper left for the University of Miami (OH). Prior to being an assistant, Williams led Fort Valley State University in Georgia for three seasons, even leading the Wildcats to 18 wins during the 2006-07 season. From there, Williams was hired by the Dongguan Parklane Snow Wolf Professional Basketball Club in China’s National Basketball League (NBL). Williams only coached the team during preseason before returning state-side.

Travis Williams HEAD COACH
Travis Williams was named the 16th head coach for the Tigers men’s basketball program on April 13, 2012. Williams, a native of Tifton, Ga., served as an assistant for previous TSU head coach John Cooper during the last three seasons. Cooper left on April 6 after accepting the head coaching position at Miami (Ohio).

Williams helped restore a winning attitude to the Tigers’ program. The Big Blue recorded just nine wins in 2009-10, while improving to 14 victories in 2010-11. The 2011-12 campaign gave Tennessee State its third NCAA Division-I postseason appearance with an invitation to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Tigers fell to eventual CIT Champion Mercer, 68-60, in the first round. As the first assistant, Williams was involved with every aspect of the program. His major priority was the recruitment and development of student-athletes, both academically and athletically. Williams helped with practice, game day strategies, assignments and scouting reports. He also maintained day-to-day operations. Williams worked with student-athletes individually, while scheduling practice and workout sessions. He coordinated all community service initiatives and served as the team’s academic liaison. “We are very pleased to have retained Travis Williams as our next head men’s basketball coach,” said Phillips. “Coach Williams is com mitted and has been a successful Division I student-athlete. He has coached on a variety of levels, so he brings a plethora of experi ence to this job. He understands the impor tance of relationship building and will con tinue to make TSU basketball a significant entity in the Nashville area.”
“I am truly humbled and grateful for this op portunity to serve as the 16th head coach at TSU,” said Williams. “It’s with great honor and pride to serve Tennessee State University and the Nashville community. I will strive to represent TSU in a first class manner at all Georgia State times by working hard and expecting my Assistant Coach student-athletes to do the same. When he joined the Tigers in the summer of 2009, Williams brought 10 years of coaching experience as an assistant and head coach. This marks Williams’ third time taking the reins of a basketball program.

Williams served as head coach of the Dongguan Parklane Snow Wolf Professional Basketball Club in China’s National Basketball League (NBL). He led the team to an 11-2 preseason record beforeleaving prior to the 2009 regular season. Williams was hired by the Dongguan Snow Wolf to develop the game of basketball in China directly after the 2008 Olympics. He facilitated player development, conditioning and game day strategies. In 2004, Williams received his first head coach appointment at Fort Valley State University in Georgia. He led the Wildcats to a pair of winning seasons during his tenure. Williams led FVSU to an 18-12 record during the 2006-07 campaign. At the conclusion of the season, the Wildcats ranked 10th in the Division II South Region poll, making it to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship game. FVSU’s 18 wins were the most since the 1998-99 season. After a three-season stint at FVSU, Williams served as an assistant for one season at Mercer University (2007-08). That season, Mercer defeated No.17 ranked University of Southern California. Williams’ coaching resume includes stops as an associate head coach with the Southern Crescent Lightning of the World Basketball Association (2004) and an assistant position at Chicago State (2003-2004). From 1999-2003 he served as assistant at his alma mater Georgia State. During his tenure with the Panthers, the program produced three conference regular season championships and one conference tournament championship. Williams is currently a member of National Associa tion of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and Black Coaches and Administrators Association (BCAA). As a player, he scored more than 1,000 career points at GSU. He graduated with a Bachelor’s in business management in 1995 and a Master’s in Sports Administration in 1999. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. and the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Nashville. Williams is married to Nikkya Williams. The two celebrated the birth of their daughter Teagan Loure’ Ann on Nov. 3, 2011 and are expecting the birth of their son early next year.

Ben Betts returns to the collegiate ranks after spending a year as the Director of Basketball at the Spectrum Sports Academy in Roanoke, Va. Betts will serve as our recruiting coordinator, handling game day scouting reports and as signments. He will participate with player development and individual workouts with the guards and wing players.

He is a former head coach and assistant coach on the mid and major level. His basketball smarts and rela tionships are going to be a great asset to our program.”

While serving under head coach Jeff Capel, Betts helped guide the Sooners to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances, including an Elite Eight showing in 2009. During the 2008-09 season, the Sooners were the preseason National Invitational Tournament (NIT) Champions. OU posted a 96-69 record during the five years while Betts served as an assistant.
South Carolina Upstate Before reuniting with Capel at OU in 2006, Betts served as the head coach at South Carolina Head Coach State for three years. Betts guided his three South CarolinaState teams to a combined 51-39 2003-06 (.567) overall record and a 36-18 (.667) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference mark. Prior to his one-year stint at VCU, Betts spent five seasons (1997-2002) as an assistant coach at Col lege of Charleston under John Kresse where he helped the Cougars to a 119-31 (.793) record and a 64-16 (.800) conference mark. College of Charleston made NCAA Tournament appearances in 1998 and 1999 and won conference or division crowns each of his five years there. Before his College of Charleston term, Betts spent seven seasons (1990-97) as an assistant at South Carolina State under longtime head coach Cy Al exander.
During his initial tenure at SCSU, the Bulldogs posted five winning seasons, including a 22-8 record in 1995-96. Betts, a Madison Heights, Va., native, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Roanoke College in 1990. As a player, he was a four-year letterwinner at Roanoke and led the Maroons to the NCAA Division III playoffs in the 1986-87 season. Betts earned a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from South Carolina State in 1997.

Rodney Hamilton ASSISTANT COACH
Memphis native Rodney Hamilton came to Tennessee State after coaching three seasons at Indiana Tech. Hamilton’s duties for the Tigers entail recruiting, scouting, organizing individual workouts, coordinator of summer camps and providing academic/personal support to the studentathletes.

“Rodney Hamilton is a tremendous addition to the TSU Tiger family,” said TSU head coach Travis Williams. “I was looking for a Tennessee guy and he fits the mold. Rodney is very pas sionate and well-respected. His ability to recruit and identify players on the recruiting front will be valuable to this program.” During the 2011-12 campaign, Hamilton guided Indiana Tech to its’ best start since the 2006-07 season. They ranked No. 15 in the Nov. 28 NAIA poll – a first for the program since 1993. Under his tutelage, the team tied for the most wins during the 2011-12 season for only the 3rd time since 2003. Hamilton’s primary duties for the Redhawks included serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator as well as scheduling, player development, scouting and all other facets of the program. Before making Cape Girardeau his home, Hamilton served two seasons as an assistant and associate head coach at Crichton College in his hometown of Memphis. During his first season at Crichton College in 2005-2006, the men’s basketball team enjoyed a 15 game turnaround from the previous season. They were able to finish with an 18-12 overall record, 3rd in the TranSouth Conference and was ranked as high as No. 13 in the NAIA Top 25 National Ranking.
In Hamilton’s second season, the 2006-07 Crichton team advanced to the NAIA Elite Eight in the National Tournament held in Kansas City, Mo., after winning the TranSouth Conference regular season and tournament titles. Hamilton played collegiately at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Ga., where he lettered all four seasons he played. Hamilton is the Panthers’ all-time leader in scoring, assists and steals. After his collegiate playing career, Hamilton participated in the NBA Atlanta Hawks free agent camp in 1998. Hamilton went on to play professionally for three seasons in Sweden, Switzerland and Hungary. Hamilton and his wife, Tamara are the parents of two daughters, Bailey Madison and Brooke McKenzie.

Brandon Johnson ASSISTANT COACH
Brandon Johnson joined Tennessee State in 2012 after the last three years as an advisor for John Lucas Basketball Resources. At TSU, Johnson will be involved in every aspect of the program. He is responsible for recruit ing, post player development, individual workouts and practices. He will take charge of game scheduling, scouting and assist with budget management. Johnson serves as the academic and community service liaison for the program.

During the three prior years before joining TSU, Johnson served as an instructor for players through skill development. He helped former basketball legend John Lucas as a player per formance evaluator. He provided presentations to the players, parents and coaches on re cruiting, NCAA eligibility and compliance. In the five previous years, Johnson coached at Auburn University alongside former Tennessee State head coach John Cooper. Johnson played a vital role in the revitalization of the Auburn basketball program as the Tigers played for the SEC’s Western Division title in the 2007 regular season finale. Prior to coming to Auburn in April 2004, Johnson spent two seasons as an assistant at the University of Texas-San Antonio, where the Roadrunners won the Southland Conference and made a NCAA Tournament appearance. Johnson has coaching ties in both Alabama and Georgia, including a three-year stint as an assistant at Jacksonville State University from 19982001. Prior to going to UTSA, he was the head coach at Atlanta Technical College in 2001-02, where he was in the process of developing the new men’s basketball program.
Johnson was an assistant at Clayton College & State University in Morrow, Ga., in 1997-98 and was an assistant at Atlanta Metropolitan College in 1996-97. He helped lead Atlanta Metropolitan to the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association Championship with a 14-0 record in 1996-97. The Lansing, Mich., native has numerous camp and clinic teaching experience, including his five-year affiliation with the Pete Newell Big Man Camp in Hawaii; working with the New Zealand National Team in 2000 and Nigerian Basketball League in 2003; and working at basketball schools for Bobby Knight, Tubby Smith, Tom Izzo, Eddie Fogler, Bobby Cremins, Jud Heathcote and Randy Ayers.

Miguel Brady - Director of Basketball and Video Operations Miguel Brady begins his sixth season with the Tennessee State men’s basketball program. In July 2012, Brady was elevated to the Director of Basketball and Video Operations. In that capacity, Brady will oversee multiple levels of the men’s basketball program including administrative duties, academic progress, team travel, recruiting, film editing and summer camps. The Nashville native previously served as the video coordinator for the Tigers. Brady joined the program under Coach Cy Alexander and remained in that capacity with John Cooper. Before his arrival at TSU, Brady spent three years as an assistant at Dyer County High School in Newbern, Tenn. There, Brady helped build a struggling program into a perennial state contender. Brady graduated from TSU in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree. Brady has one daughter, Dominique. Enriched in TSU tradition, Brady’s father Herman spent 33 years as a professor at Tennessee State.
Chuck Davidson - Assistant Director of Basketball and Video Operations Entering his first year with the men’s basketball program, the Peabody, Mass., native will assist Coach Miguel Brady with all aspects of basketball operations, which includes administrative duties, film editing, summer camps and travel arrangements. Davidson previously served as a graduate assistant at Baylor University. While at Baylor, Davidson checked on student-athletes progress, assisted in practice, edited film and aided coaches with scouting reports. Prior to his arrival at BU, Davidson spent one season at his alma mater Roger Williams as an assistant coach. He assisted with film exchange, recruiting, running drills and scouting opponents for the Hawks. Davidson graduated from RWU in 2009 and completed his master’s degree from Baylor this spring.
Gus Fraley - Director of Player Personnel
Gus Fraley joined the TSU men’s basketball program in July 2012. Fraley, a native of Lincoln County, Tenn., spent the past four seasons as the assistant boy’s basketball coach at Chapel Hill High School in North Carolina. Fraley will serve as TSU’s Director of Player Personnel. His duties will include making sure that all of the men’s basketball student-athletes are progressing in the classroom as well as making progress in the weight room and on court. In 2011-12 the Tigers posted a 26-2 record and ranked No. 1 in the 3-A North Carolina. While also in North Carolina, Fraley served as an off-season skill development instructor for college and professional players. He provided fast paced, on-court NBA style individual workouts and skill sessions to players.
Josh Cooperwood - Graduate Assistant
Josh Cooperwood returns to Tennessee State as a student assistant coach after playing professionally for the past eight years. The Nashville native spent two seasons with the Tigers men’s basketball program from 2001 until 2003. After completing his eligibility at TSU, Cooperwood started his professional career. He finished his career with the Saba Caspian Mehr in Iran. In his final season, Cooperwood averaged 17.1 points, 5.6 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game.

Alvin Futrell
Director of Strength and Conditioning Alvin Futrell joined the Tennessee State University athletic staff in 2009 and serves as the director of strength and conditioning. Futrell is the primary conditioning coach for men’s basketball, men’s track and field and football.
Futrell joins TSU after serving as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Western Kentucky University. At WKU, Futrell worked with the men’s and women’s golf teams and, served as an assistant for football. He was an assistant under David Abernethy from 2003-2005, who is the Senior Assistant Strength Coach at Clemson University. Also, he assisted Brad Ohrt with the Hilltoppers from 2005-2007, who now is the Director of Strength and Conditioning at Western Carolina University. Futrell, a native of Hendersonville, Tenn. holds an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science and a Masters degree in Kinesiology.

Ramsey came to Tennessee State after serving as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at South Carolina State University. He served as the primary athletic trainer for football as well as men and women’s track and field. During graduate school, Ramsey also served as the head athletic trainer for Columbia High School where he provided the primary care for all of the school’s sports. Ramsey has also spent time as an intern with Pittsburg State University, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Carolina Panthers. He worked as a student athletic trainer at Kansas State for Intramural Sports, Men’s Basketball and Football. Additionally, he served as a student athletic trainer at Cloud County Community College. At Cloud County he covered baseball, men and women’s basketball, men and women’s soccer, softball and men and women’s track and field.

GENTRY CENTER
Gentry Complex is a multi-purpose arena on the campus of Tennessee State University.
The arena opened in 1980. It is home to the TSU basketball teams. This facility was built in 1980 and named for Howard C. Gentry, Sr., who, during a 27 year span, served as a prominent professor, coach and athletic director at TSU. The facility houses the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and has a basketball arena, dance studio, indoor track, indoor Olympic pool, (4) racquetball courts, and a training and weight room. It has a seating capacity of 10,500.
McLendon Court The McLendon Court was named in honor of TSU and legendary Basketball Hall of Fame head coach John B. McClendon. The court was dedicated in 1992 when the Tigers hosted Eastern Kentucky.

JOHN McLENDON
John B. McLendon, Jr. (April 15, 1915 – October 8, 1999) is noted as one of the most successful high school and college coaches in the sport of basketball. McLendon coached at schools such as Tennessee State A&I University North Carolina College, the Hampton Institute, TKentucky State College, and Cleveland State University. While at North Carolina College, McLendon participated in The Secret Game, the first collegiate basketball contest where blacks and whites competed on the same floor. He was a three-time winner of the NAIA Coach of the Year award, and won three consecutive NAIA championships at Tennessee State, making him the first college basketball coach ever to have won three consecutive national titles. When he was hired at Cleveland State in 1966, he became the first African American basketball coach ever at a predominantly white university. McLendon also coached professionally, when Cleveland Pipers General Manager, Mike Cleary hired him to be the head coach of the American Basketball League team which was owned by George Steinbrenner. McLendon’s hiring made history, as he became the first African-American head coach in professional sports. In his, and the Pipers, only season in the league, the team captured the league championship. McLendon later went on to coach the American Basketball Association’s Denver Rockets. McLendon was first inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a “contributor”, not as a coach. He was, however, selected in 2007 for the second entering class of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame for his coaching achievements. He was also inducted into the Tennessee State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Cleveland State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007, where his wife Joanna accepted the award on his behalf. A biography of John B. McLendon, Breaking Through: John B. McLendon, Basketball Legend and Civil Rights Pioneer, by Milton S. Katz, was published in 2007. McLendon’s coaching legacy is also chronicled in the documentary “Black Magic”, which originally aired as a two-part series on ESPN in March 2008.

ED MARTIN
As a head coach at TSU, Ed Martin won a Associated Press National Championship in 1973 and won 290 games for the historic basketball program. Ed Martin currently holds the longest coaching career as the Tigers’ head basketball coach serving for 17 years. From 1968-1985, Coach Martin tallied a record of 108-118 finishing .500 or above in 15 seasons. He also coached at South Carolina State and while finishing his coaching career with 508 wins. A respected man throughout the entire Nashville community, Martin also contributed to Vanderbilt University as a leader in the school's Human and Organization Development program to help the community. He was named associated professor of human development at Peabody in 1989. He passed away in 2005 at the age of 75 and is still remembered as one of Nashville's greatest public citizens.

Dick “Skull” Barnett A three-time All-America player at Tennessee A & I, Dick Barnett led the Tigers to three consecutive NAIA national championships for Hall of Fame Coach John McLendon. Barnett was named championship MVP in 1958 and 1959. The top draft choice of the Syracuse National of the NBA, he spent 14 seasons in the league playing with the Los Angeles Lakers for three seasons and played on two championship teams with the New York Knicks (nine season) in 1969-70 and 1972-73. The New York Knicks retired his jersey in 1990 while Tennessee State University retired his number in 2006. Barnett’s jersey is the only retired basketball number at TSU.

Lloyd Neal
Tennessee State University’s all-time leading rebounder, Neal spent his entire professional career (1972–1979) with the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers. Though undersized for his position, he endeared himself to fans with his hard work and tenacity, while averaging a double-double (13.4 points, 11.8 rebounds) during the 1972-73 NBA season.
Ted“Hound” McClain
McClain played eight seasons (1971-1979) of professional basketball in the ABA and NBA. McClain competed for the Carolina Cougars, Kentucky Colonels, New York Nets, Denver Nuggets, Buffalo Braves, Philadelphia 76ers, and Phoenix Suns. In his career, McClain averaged 8.4 points per game and 3.4 assists per game. He also appeared in the 1974 ABA All-Star Game. While in college he was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 1970 NCAA Men’s Division II Basketball Tournament in a losing effort, as Tennessee State lost in the finals to Philadelphia University. McClain holds the ABA record for steals in a single game with 12, set against the New York Nets on December 26, 1973. McClain aslo holds the TSU record in most free throws made in a game with 24.

Leonard”Truck”Robinson
Robinson played for TSU from 1971-74 before being drafted in the second round by the Washington Bullets (1974-77), while playing for the Atlanta Hawks (1977), New Orleans Jazz (1977-79), Phoenix Suns (1979-82), and New York Knicks (1982-85). A two-time All-Star, Robinson had his finest season with the New Orleans Jazz in 1977–78, when he averaged 22.7 points and led the NBA with 15.7 rebounds per game. He helped the Bullets win the 1975 NBA Eastern Conference and the Suns win the 1981 NBA Pacific Division. Robinson was named to the 1978 East All-Star Team, 1978 All-NBA First Team and the 1981 West All-Star Team. Robinson led the NBA in minutes played (3,638), defensive rebounds (990), total rebounds (1,288) and rebounds per game (15.7) during the 197778 season. He ranks 86th on the NBA/ABA career offensive rebounds list (1,985), 43rd on the career defensive rebounds list (5,282), 81st on the total rebounds list (7,267) and 73rd on the career rebounds per game list (9.4). Anthony Mason
Mason played for Tennessee State University from 1985-88 and was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in the third round of the 1988 NBA Draft. wHe went on to play with the New Jersey Nets, Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks, Charlotte Hornets, Milwaukee Bucks and Miami Heat. He averaged 10.8 points and 8.3 rebounds in his 13-year NBA career. Mason blossomed in New York, winning the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award in 1995. He was named to the 1996-’97 All-NBA Third Team and to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team. He led the league in minutes played in 1995-’96 (3,457), also setting a Knicks record with the number. He also led the league in minutes played per game in 1996-97 (43.1).

Carlos Rogers
Rogers played forward/center for Tennessee State University from 1992-94 before being selected by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1st round (11th overall) of the 1994 NBA Draft. Rogers played in eight NBA seasons from 1994 to 2002. He played for the Golden State Warriors (1994–1995), Toronto Raptors (1995–1998), Portland Trail Blazers (1998–1999), Houston Rockets (1999–2001) and Indiana Pacers (2001–2002) . In his NBA career, Rogers played in 298 games and scored a total of 2,196 points. His NBA career average is 7.4 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per game.

KEAN HALL
Serves as home of TSU Athletics Administrative offices. The 92, 000 sq. ft. building houses the offices of Tiger football, volleyball and academic services. Built 1951

KEAN GYMNASIUM (KEAN’S LITTLE GARDEN)
Home to Tiger Volleyball, the gym once housed TSU basketball games. Now, it is the assigned gym for volleyball competition, practices and intramurals. Built 1951

The center is 202, 342 sq. ft. houses the athletic ticket office, TSU Sports Medicine, Athletic Media Relations and the school of Human Peformance and Sports Sciences.

TIGER SOFTBALL FIELD
Home of TSU Softball, features a press box, offices, and locker rooms which were added in 2005. The indoor batting facility was built in 2002. Built 1998
Serves as home of Tiger Tennis and features nine tennis The 15, 000 sq. ft. natorioum is the former home of the courts including a main court with bleachers. The on site TSU Tiger Sharks. The complex now host several area high school swim practices and competitions. Built 1980 tennis office is located in the 1,600 ft. field house. Built 2005
PERCY WARNER PARK
The park’s running course was used for the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Championship with TSU serving as host.
THE HERMITAGE GOLF COURSE
The golf course, located in Old Hickory, Tenn. serves as the current home course to the TSU golf program. Tennessee State made the Hermitage its home last season.
