An Extreme Water’s Edge The new ferry terminal has an important presence in the Hunter’s Point South embedded at the end of the Long Island area. Positioned at an abandoned lot adjacent to Gantry State Park and water taxi beach, this project’s main purpose is “to flow the city life into the ferry terminal by connecting Long Island with Manhattan”. This goal is achieved by multiple levels of circulating paths.

Pedestrians access through a skywalk which wraps around the building and while also connecting to an inner waiting area on the second floor. Automobiles continue through an underground tunnel and stop either at the parking lot below the terminal or continue their trajectory to Manhattan. The building has one main entry and a secondary exit/entry. The overall circulation scheme provides easy access from many parts of the city.

Main structure

The building would be turned inside out, thus liberating the interior spaces from the permanent accomodation of circulation and servicing. The building’s main structure consists of an exposed steel skeleton with diagonal bracing. The external display of structure and services is reflected by generating programmatic requirements for flexibility of the interior spaces. This structural strategy eliminates the need for supporting columns across the unencumbered interior span, leaving the interior open and adaptable. 4

At 10 stories tall, the THIN living tower has an important presence in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. The site, 1906 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA is a lot adjacent to a Japanese restaurant and an abandoned theater and is surrounded by a busy and energetic area. With such a unique site, this project seeks to take advantage of the opportunity by inviting people into the tower while still keeping the privacy of its residents. The concept of Public vs. Private is developed in the ultimate division of spaces. The public space composes of an art gallery and a restaurant. The private consists of 10 residential units, lobby and service spaces. The public space is connected to the adjacent theater with the latter being the only way to get into the public space.

Einstein Museum site

Old Town of Bern, Bern-Use Plan

project : between 1902 and 1905 Albert Einstein lived and worked as a patent clerk for the government of Switzerlandin Bern. During this time period, Einstein developed his revolutionary theory which would change the view how we comprehend the world in relationto time and space. The goal of this project is to design a museum in his honor. Einstein’s theory of relativity describes the relationship between time, space and matter. Any object distorts the fabric of space-time. A marble moving along the trampoline will be drawn inexorably towards the ball. By its unusual and dynamic facade, the Einstein Museum will distort the urban fabric. The building is integrated into the urban context, unfolding its interconnecting shapes of stone and glass. Besides external conditions, there are internal conditions such as the movement and circulation of people. There is an auditorium that can house about 30 people. On the top there is an observation deck fr people to see the major landmarks of Bern. The ground floor is open to allow easy access and circulation between the two opposite streets. You can enter the building through an elevator and an escalator. The building is meant to be like an urban machine that willl bring social life into it. To conclude, the facade – both internal and external –

2011 Dean’s Cup Notions of site are usually considered as a-priori conditions within the standard building / site relationship. This relationship supposes a dependency of architecture on a landscape condition. This competitions asks that you question the notion of architectures and design exploration as a process dependent on a given site condition. Development of strong propositions are entirely dependent on the definition of robust conceptual notions able to govern the trajectory of a scheme. A self-sustaining system of perpetual mechanical motion, that rejects nature’s physical laws and supplements its own, controls concentric fractures of landscape. As a whole it is a mass that sits on undefined space and moves only through infinite time. Freeform movement mends the timeless circumnavigation of the gardens.

An ever present sense of imminent chaos lying on the verge of tempest manifestation compels. From the core sprout rigid claws of iron forged to grasp the sparse green tracts that shamelessly cloak the machine. The Umbrella as a Measure of Humanity

What is the relationship between measurement and boundary? How do they help us form our understanding of space, limits and permissions? In this studio we will derive program from needs, movement and use.We will gather objects of human use and draw them. We will then appropriate these objects as tools or instruments, to measure human activity, thought and movement. These findings will help us drive our individual project, rather than the usual opposite. For my project, I chose the umbrella because of its multiple uses.

Designing a track system

My attempt to develop a track system that will easily be used for the sliding of boxes attached to the umbrella rib. I have initially started with a simple track system that was using wooden sticks; then I decided to use an actaul umbrella rib that will help me slide the boxes. Then, I experimented with an that was successful.

The main purpose of the umbrella tower is to bring people inside the tower in two cases: 1) on rainy days (during sunny days they can walk on the path) 2)at night whenever the workers of the manufacturing umbrella company are leaving from work The umbrella tower functions in the same way as an umbrella - with the use of runners and ribs it can extend and collapse. The umbrella principle can be applied in this tower in order to create dynamic architecture.

32

conceptual digital models showing the umbrella principle in the umbrella tower

Studio III

lubbock, tx

Final Physical Model Final physical model of an umbrella tower - the umbrella tower is located in a lake so for the people to access it, they can take the sliding tubes below the two vaults that. The way cylinders with people move is dependent on the core of the tower - once the rings move up, so the ribs move too and that activates the movement of the small vaulted (not visible on image) cylinders that slide on the track system. Once they slide, the rib collapses and brings people inside the tower. In the core, there are two sets of elevators that bring people up to enjoy the view from the top of the tower. The tower has two main functions - one for the manufacture of umbrellas that happens on the down side of the tower and another - museum for the display history of the umbrella.

The image on the left shows how the curved street off of Marsha Sharp freeway can lead most Lubbockites directly to the site. Circulation will be the emphasis of our proposal for the site. We want to attempt to create a fluid circulation throughout the site. The central median permits passageway for traffic to commute through the site creating a direct connection to the building and the primary business road(Broadway street).

Based on the sunpath diagram we will depict the shadows from adjacent buildings on our site and define those areas where we will get the most sunlight. Our design concentrates on energy conservation through extensive use of natural daylighting.

Proposal II Context

Our design aims to empower the downtown area and bring more life into it. One of the most significant buildings is the NTS Television tower which can be seen from I-27. By connecting our project with the tower, we make this entire area more attractive to the visitor.

2D interpretation of a silent movie The different stop actions from the 1967 film Playtime have a correlation between the characters and objects. The scenes start with the doorman lighting his cigarette and finish with him opening the door for the carpenter. A TIC can be found in different elements such as the glass wall, eye contact, camera tracking, the lighter, the physical distance and others. The glass wall acts like an invisible border between the two characters at first. We recognize it exists in the second part of the scenes. Both of the characters, the doorman and carpenter, are situated parallel to this wall. Also, the white marks on the road are parallel to each one of the characters the whole entire time. Eye contact is straight into the eyes, then it changes to a different direction following the way to the door. The eyes of the DM and CP are following the body motion, especially the hands. Camera tracking is aimed to the DM all the time and is shooting at a 90 degrees angle to a point from the body of the DM. The camera tracking is like a beam cutting through the bodies through each one of the characters. The lighter moves up and down in the hands of DM. The direction of the lighter is the same as one of the eyes. It may be said that the eyes are following the lighter or vice versa. In the first 7 seconds you cannot really tell what is going on between the two characters until after both of them start moving. They seem to be very close in their actions. The relationship between them is like a mathematical system of two equations with two unknowns. After the rotational movement of the DM and going straight line of the CP, both of them proceed moving parallel. There can be seen three particular elements of DM. DM-Mi element is his stationery position, he seems to be like an axis, standing gracefully and doing his job. DM-Major elements can be his movements from the right to left. These three elements draw his trajectory. Three particular elements of CP also show us his trajectory. CP-Mi can be walking towards the glass wall. CP-Ma can be coming to the door and being near it. Both of the characters seem to have one major and two minor elements in their movements. To conclude, the CP and the DM are synchronized in their actions.

analysis of an army ants system analysis of an army ants system based on the above analysis, I have figured out some of the main principles that define an army ants system. An army ants system consists of a queen, soldiers and workers. Some of the rues are: 1)It seems that every component is part of the whole system with lots of joints and connections that move together; 2)Concentrated numbers are of paramount importance in the system; 3)There is lots of hieararchy and lots of mathematical models from human welfare; 4)It is a self-organyzing system; dynamic yet stable structure; 5) Mutually beneficial relationship; 6)Maintains the same compass during the day studies of the movement of an army ant

I started with a ribbon. Then I bended the two ends of it and connected them to the opposite sides of the ribbon. In this way all edgesof are conected. For the ayers, I just attached components to each other. For the morphed surface I used, the single component and split it into multiple surfaces. I created 4 and applied them to the morphed surface.

Unrolled I started with a dodecahedron. I manipulated only 3 of the hexagons. I rotated the planes at an 30, 45 and 60 degrees. Then, I used lines to connect the different edges until I got to an enclosed polygon. I started creating the cluster by attaching a triangle, a hexagon to their corresponding counterparts. Then I created two spiral surfaces around which I arrayed the single component.

Proposal for Changing Smoking Policies and Regulations on Texas Tech Campus (proposed to the TTU Student Government Association) are not abiding by the regulations that restrict/prohibit smoking within a certain distance from buildings. One of the proposals that I made to the Texas Tech Student Government Association is for placement of smoking booths on key locations on campus.

According to some statistics, the TTU Library is the most visited place by students on the Texas Tech campus. The front of the library is a popular place for students to gather and smoke. However, with the introduction of the 20 ft smoking distance from a building, the front will no longer be accessible for students. This is the reason why I am proposing the placement of a smoking booth on the back of the library which is a key location for many adjacent buildings, too. This prototype structure will serve several buildings and will be more than 20 ft away from any building in an empty area not being used for any purposes.
