Community Keep an Eye on Sport with Michael D

A bitterly disappointing performance in Killarney last Sunday which leaves us with a mountain bigger than Carrauntoohil to climb. The pace from Kerry was electric from the minute the ball was thrown in and you could see they had a point to improve in front of their own support. All the damage was done in the first half as Kerry were as ravenous as a man after a feed of pints on a Saturday night. They went in leading 0-15 0-06 and the second half was pretty much a non event as the gap never went below eight points. You would be well pressed to pick a Mayo man that played well. David Clarke produced two superb saves but Kerry benefitted greatly from our kick-outs. David Moran had a field day and inside the likes of David Clifford, Sean O?Shea, Stephen O?Brien and Paul Geaney all done untold damage. Jason Foley, Paul Murphy and Adrian Spillane were all marshalling defence to brilliant effect. About the only thing Mayo will take from this is that Cilian O?Connor surpassed the Gooch Cooper to become the all-time leading scorer in the Championship which is a remarkable feat at the age of 27. Our basic skill execution was poor and gave away needless frees like illegal pick-ups and bouncing the ball twice. Mayo will have some serious soul searching to do and will need to pick themselves up quickly for a battle Royale in Croker on Sunday. Meath will not be as easy as some quarters feel but I do think we will win. However, it could very well boil down to scoring difference at the end so we need to beat the Leinster men by double digits if we have any real aspirations of making the last four. It?s a big ask for us now to get out of this group but certainly not beyond us. One thing for sure is there will be numerous personnel changes for Sunday?s clash. The Mayo Ladies got their Championship back on track with an impressive 3-14 to 3-11win away to Tyrone. Next up is Donegal in two weeks time which will be another stiff battle and unfortunately Peter Leahy?s side are picking up their fair share of injuries too along the way. Erris St. Pat?s made the breakthrough to win the County U14 b Title last week when they edged out a very good Ballina Stephenites outfit by three points. Belmullet U14?s also had county success to win the D title by seeing off Kilmovee Shamrocks on a 5-16 to 2-9 scoreline A tremendous win for the Erris youngsters who will certainly build on this success. Unfortunately the poor run of form by Erris United continued last weekend in the Premier Division as Ballina Town B who were crowned league champions with four games remaining eased past them 7-1. Bangor Hibs were also defeated last weekend away to Glenhest Rovers losing 3-0. A crucial game with our old rivals Meath in GAA HQ where a win is imperative is the big one this weekend.

Well done to Michael Walshe, Winner of the A4 Galway classic cycle race and promotion to A3. Well deserved!

Michael Neary One of the problems associated with the dry humid weather is summer mastitis. It normally occurs between the months of June to September, affecting both dry cows and in-calf heifers. Mastitis is mainly caused by the increase in the number of flies during the summer months however it can occur at any time of the year. A very serious case of mastitis can result in udder damage, high temperature and toxaemia. More often than not the affected quarter or quarters are generally lost. The main priority for the farmer is to try and save the cow and in the case of the heifer the farmer must try to save both the heifer and the unborn calf. Mastitis can be detected in an infected animal when the quarter is very swollen, when the quarter is drawn out it will be very curdy (almost chunky), it will have a nasty smell and in severe cases of mastitis there could be some traces of blood. As with most things prevention in as much as possible is the best route to take. Ways in which to prevent mastitis include fly-control, grazing conditions, teat damage and isolation of animals. Fly Control: There are pour on products which can be purchased in order to control flies. The product can be poured along the cow's back and some farmers choose to pour the mixture on the udders themselves. This pour on mix usually protects the animals for up to four weeks. There is also an ear tag with fly prevention or Stockholm tar can also be used. It is effective, but it is also very messy and needs to be applied every 4-7 days. Grazing Conditions: The fields that your animals are grazing in during the fly season will of course make a huge difference. If you can avoid fields that have sheltered hedges or fields that are surrounded by trees this will reduce the risk of mastitis. It is also recommended to keep pasture topped in order to eliminate tall weeds or seeded weeds such as thistles etc. which can provide cover for the flies and help to spread infection as the animals walk against them. Teat Damage: Animals with any sores or cuts on their teats should be housed as the open sores will only attract more flies and again increase the risk of infection. Isolation of infected animals is very important as it greatly helps to confine the disease. When you milk out the infection from the quarter make sure to discard it properly as this is full of infection. Always talk to your vet about prevention and treatment of summer mastitis. Until next week have a good week and a safe week on the farm.

Deadhead roses after their first flush of flowers. Deadheading is the removal of old or faded blooms, it will ensure roses flower from now until early winter. After deadheading, feed the roses. Apply a dressing of Rose Food now and again in early august. This will encourage new growth and ensure your roses will produce new flowers all summer long. July is also a great time to plant new scented rose varieties to add additional colour and scent to your garden or patio pots. Want to know more about planting, growing and pruning roses? Now is the time to plan ahead for autumn, winter and spring. July is the time to sow flowering bedding plants from seed as the temperatures are ideal for germination. Scented wallflowers and winter flowering pansies are both wonderful flowers to plant now for colour later in the year. A Wallflower such as Persian Carpet is a truly lovely dwarf variety that covers the ground and will creates a riot of colour next March, April and May. If you have a favourite plant you would like to see again later in the year, then consider propagating the plant. Simply, take cuttings from the plants, dip the base into organic rooting powder and place the cutting into a plastic pot of moist compost. The cuttings should be short, about 6 inches long. Next, cover the pot with a white, light plastic bag and place on your window sill. The cuttings will produce new roots in three weeks time. Then you can simply pot them up for further growth.

Hi and welcome to this week's column. I hope you are enjoying the lovely weather and are managing to get out and about to do some exercise. Q1. Ann; What's the best cereal to eat? I'm trying to lose weight and get healthy. A. Porridge (oatflakes) is the best cereal you will get. It's high fibre and very low natural sugar. I always buy mine from Slรกinte Healthshop as I find it less starchy than regular porridge. A good quality, no added sugar muesli would be a good cereal to use also. When buying a cereal go for something which is low or no added sugar and which is high fibre. Q2. Teresa; I'm eating lots of salads as the weather is so warm. What do I need to be wary of adding to my plate? A. Make sure you are adding plenty of protein to your plate ie chicken, lean ham, hard boiled egg. Watch out for coleslaw, potato salad and full fat dressings. Make your own coleslaw and potato salad using lighter than light mayonnaise and opt for fat free dressings. Q3. Maura; I find it really hard to drink water on its own. What can I add into it? A You can add no added sugar juices if you wish but a more healthy version would be to add sliced lemon and lime into a jug of iced water. Strawberries and cucumber is lovely also and are natural. It's vital to stay hydrated in this warm weather. Q4. Anne; I'm trying to watch my waistline but finding it hard with the warm weather as I'm eating quite a lot of ice cream. Help! A. While the occasional ice cream is fine, if you are eating some most days it certainly won't help your weightloss efforts! Opting for an ice lolly or something similar would be a much better choice. You could always make your own lollies using moulds with no added sugar juice and water and freeze. Nice and refreshing without doing damage to your waistline! Q5. Helen; I'm so busy during summer. The kids are off and there's so many visitors coming and going. I'm thinking of just putting off my weightloss efforts until things settle down in September. What would you advise? A. Anne I would never advise giving up on looking after yourself! If you keep going now you could be at least a half stone lighter by the time the schools reopen. Why should you put yourself second to everything that's going on? Try to make good choices at each meal without making a big deal of it. Make it normal. Drink 2ltr of water and get a half hour exercise in each day. Just stick with it! Once again keep those questions coming in! Anyone needing help contact me here or at 086 3132340. Send your health questions to health@erriseye.com

Calling all young readers! The Summer Stars reading initiative at is now on at Belmullet Library. Call into Kate or ring 097 82555 for all the details. Opening hours: Thursday: 1.00pm - 7:00pm Friday: 11:00am - 4:00pm Saturday: 11:00am - 4:00pm

Give hair a blast of cold air to set the style and seal the cuticles to add shine. If you need extra staying power, spray lightly with a light hold hair spray that will give hold without weighing the style down.? You only need to wash hair twice a week ? if you feel that?s not enough, you?re not using the right products, not rinsing them out properly or using too much. If you want to freshen up hair, just shower and condition it ? you don?t necessarily need to shampoo. When hair is around 80% dry ? in other words, it is just starting to feel dry ? start using a brush to style. If you use it before then, you?re wasting your time. When drying your hair, always start with the fringe. This is the focal point of the cut, so it needs to be right. Once your fringe is dry, the rest of the style will fall into place. When most people get a new dryer, the first thing they throw away is the nozzle ? but in fact, it?s the most important part of your hairdryer, because it concentrates the heat and directs it where you want it. If your hair is naturally very curly, apply a serum to wet hair and, using your fingers, twist random-sized sections into a ?rope?and leave until completely dry. This will give a rippled wave effect. What you eat can affect the overall condition of your hair and you can?t expect to have shiny hair without a balanced diet with plenty of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. If you want to boost your diet with supplements to help your hair health then take vitamin B complex, zinc and Omega 3 to provide essential fatty acids. I swear by Ideal Omega 3, as well as BetterYou B12 Boost Pure Energy Oral Spray. The major cause of dull hair is too much shampoo and not enough rinsing. That dollop of shampoo takes about four minutes to rinse out properly. So use less and rinse much, much more.

ERRISNEW S Declan Nerney was born in the heart of Ireland in Drumlish Co Longford, at a unique period of time in the music scene worldwide. A revolution in rock and pop brought us The Beatles, Elvis, and the Rolling Stones, while here in Ireland the magnificent showband boom was about to explode. A young man growing up at that time, Declan was being heavily influenced by these greats and indeed was getting the rare opportunity to see most of the top showbands appear in his native town of Drumlish. He would cajole his mother into seeing Joe Dolan, Big Tom, Philomena Begley, The Capital Showband, and many more perform when the appeared at the marquee at the end of May and early June. From his vantage point close to the stage, he would absorb every move made by the guitarist in the bands, watching his fingers slide along the strings, hoping that one day he might be up there performing just like Dan O?Hara or Seamus McMahon? His bands have included The Hi-Lo's The Gene Stuart Band and Brian Coll and the Buckaroos. Whether you argue that summer starts on May 1st or June 1st, we can all agree I?m sure that the summer season is now well and truly upon us. People are making plans to travel for vacations and many other reasons, visiting friends, family etc. The question arises if you are a pet owner, what to do with Rover or Sheba while I am away? Do I leave them with a neighbour/ friend, do I place them in a boarding facility or do I indeed bring them with? Whatever you decide, it's vital that some planning is done well in advance. Perhaps the neighbour/ friend that you plan on asking is going to be away themselves or otherwise unavailable. If you plan on booking a boarding facility, they will want some advance notice and your pet will need to be up to date with their annual vaccines as well as for dogs, having a Kennel Cough vaccine (every reputable boarding facility will/ should insist on this vaccine) before they will take them. Lots of people every year mistakenly believe that the Kennel Cough vaccine is given as part of the annual vaccine programme, but this is not usually the case, as it is a completely separate and distinct vaccine. Even more important still is planning well in advance if you are going to bring your pet on vacation or overseas for any reason, as this involves getting a Pet Passport, issued by the Dept. Of Agriculture, through Vet Practices. This is not a quick and simple document to get as there are now strict guidelines governing animal movements between different countries both within and without the EU. Moreover, should the British leave the EU (I just cannot for the life of me print the word B£$&%T!!!!!! I hate the word and refuse to print it), there will be changes to the regulations governing the movement of pets between all EU states and the UK including to and from Ireland. It is the pet owners responsibility to make themselves aware of both the existing regulations and any potential changes should B£$&%T happen. The current situation is that your pet needs to have a Pet Passport, detailing the owners details, the animals details, microchip no, details of a rabies vaccine having been administered and indeed, their up to date routine vaccines, worming and other parasitic treatments should be documented also. There WILL be a need for a follow up blood test to determine if an adequate immune response has occurred to the rabies vaccine if an animal wishes to travel to the UK and return to Ireland, should B$&%T happen, so owner beware. Countries outside the EU have their own unique set of guidelines on what a pet needs to enter their jurisdiction and indeed different states within the US for example have differing criteria, therefore it is advisable to contact the Dept. Of Bernie Agriculture or equivalent in whatever country one wishes to travel to with theirDunne pet to make sure they are covered for travel. Remember, planning well in advance, what ever those plans may be, both for yourself and your 086 3904370 pet should increase the chances of a happy and stress free trip. Happy holidays from Skeldale. Woof Woof.

Belmullet Action Plan Launched by Minister Ring The Belmullet Community Futures Action Plan 2019 ? 2024 was launched last week by Minister Michael Ring T.D. The launch was attended by local residents, community groups and business people on Friday, 12 July, in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet. The Five Year Belmullet Community Futures Action Plan was effectively composed by local residents & business owners (through stakeholder interviews, meetings & household surveys), and co-ordinated by the Belmullet Community Futures steering committee, with the assistance of the Mayo Community Futures department of Mayo Co. Co. The bilingual Action Plan summarises views of: Belmullet as it is now; the community?s vision for the future; issues that matter most to the community; and priorities for projects & action. Five themes were highlighted by the people of Belmullet as areas which require immediate attention (in no particular order): Local Economy & Tourism; Environment, Culture & Heritage; Community & Recreation; Access to Services & Transport; Town Enhancement, Parking & Roads. The steering committee members are delighted to finally have concrete evidence of what the people of Belmullet actually want to see happening in their community. The Action Plan is intended to be used as a tool, and a framework, for facilitating much-needed developments in the town. Speaking at the launch, Margaret Tallott (Secretary, Belmullet Community Futures Steering Committee) said, ?Belmullet Tidy Towns applied for the Community Futures Programme on a number of previous occasions, but it was not until this attempt An tAire Michael Ring T.D. agus Ava Keenaghan supported by the Erris Chamber of Commerce and 37 local groups that we were successful. Having spent over Conroy ag an seoladh don Phlean Gníomhaíochta Pobail Bhéal an Mhuirthead 2019 ? 2024. 1,000 volunteer hours on this programme since September 2018 we are excited about seeing this Action Grianghraf le Mary Keenaghan. Plan being implemented, in the next few years, by various existing community groups and organisations, under the Belmullet Community Futures umbrella.? Chairperson of the steering committee, and also MC on the night, Councillor Sean Carey expressed gratitude to each and every individual that contributed to the Action Plan since September 2018, and also to all those who helped on the day of the launch, the staff of Áras Inis Gluaire, Peter Hynes (CEO Mayo County Council) and Minister Michael Ring T.D. The Community Futures programme is a community-led process which allows residents and businesses to have a voice in decision-making and planned development. The programme was introduced by Mayo County Council in 2006 and since then, over 30 communities have taken part. Having seen the success that the Community Futures Programme has had in other towns and villages in Mayo, CEO Peter Hynes said that he was very optimistic about the future of Belmullet Town. He commended the efforts of the steering committee and he praised the work achieved by community groups and organisations in the area. Upon launching the Action Plan, Minister Michael Ring paid tribute to the community and stressed the importance of working together to accomplish the priorities set out in the plan, saying, ?We won?t be found wanting when it comes to supporting this plan and at the end of the five years, if 97% of this plan is implemented, it will be an incredible achievement.? Copies of the plan are available at Áras Inis Gluaire and the Belmullet Tidy Towns / Erris Chamber of Commerce office (Chapel Street, Belmullet). If you would like any further information in relation to the plan, please email belmulletcommunityfutures@gmail.com or call 097 20977.

It?s All About the Bees and The Seas Members of Baile Slachtmhar Bhéal an Mhuirthead (Belmullet Tidy Towns) were delighted with the large number of people who attended the launch of their first photographic exhibition in Áras Inis Gluaire last Friday, 12 July. Titled ?It?s All About the Bees and the Seas?, the exhibition was launched by Dave Suddaby of Birdwatch Ireland. Belmullet Tidy Towns Committee Secretary Katherine Mangan said, "Although it has recently become a buzzword, Belmullet Tidy Towns have actually been working on biodiversity for at least 10 years. Our efforts include sea-life and wildflower storyboards, corncrake tours in conjunction with Ballycroy National Park and now this wonderful exhibition?. The exhibition is an important part of the group?s work in relation to their biodiversity campaign, which has been recognised on a national platform ? it was awarded first place in the Together for Biodiversity Awards at the National Biodiversity Conference, in Dublin Castle last February. ?It?s All About the Bees and the Seas?features beautiful photographs of rare species, flora & fauna to be found in the Belmullet area, taken by members of the Baile Slachtmhar Bhéal an Mhuirthead team ? John Reilly and Mary Keenaghan. Speaking at the launch on behalf of the Tidy Towns committee, Margaret Tallott, said, ?We have been using John?s and Mary?s amazing photographs for years in our applications and in our storyboards, and we?ve always wanted to show them off to a wider audience. We are delighted now that everyone can appreciate their beautiful work in this exhibition, and we are thrilled that it will also be going to other Mayo towns, thanks to Mayo North East (SICAP).? Margaret also welcomed Niamh Phelan, a UCD M.Sc. student who is collaborating with Belmullet Tidy Towns for her research on the Great Yellow Bumblebee. Niamh?s research will provide the committee with an important opportunity to inform the committee?s Dave Suddaby of Birdwatch Ireland launched practices for the future. Baile Slachtmhar Bhéal an Mhuirthead's beautiful The ?Bees and Seas?campaign endeavours to create awareness of the wealth of wildlife and marine life that is exhibition 'It's All About the Bees and the Seas' in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet. The exhibition will run to be found in the area of Béal an Mhuirthead. The Mullet Peninsula is home to Ireland?s rarest bee, and in until 12 August. efforts to avoid the extinction of the Great Yellow Bumblebee (and also the Belted Beauty Moth) the Tidy Towns group is taking some specific measures to create awareness among the wider community and to help with preserving and improving the amazing habitats which sustain these important species. Margaret added, ?Improving the quantity and quality of wildlife habitats in our area not only has obvious environmental benefits, but it also has a huge impact on the incredible potential for ecotourism in Belmullet and on the peninsula. We know for a fact that people travel here from far and wide to observe rare and endangered species, and it would be wonderful if we could all work together in terms of developing our reputation as an ecotourism destination.? In fact, as a result of the ?Bees and Seas?campaign the MSLETB VTOS programme plan to include an ecotourism module as part of a new Tourism with Business Award in the Belmullet Further Education Centre, commencing in September. The exhibition was also visited by Minister Michael Ring and Mayo County Council CEO Mr. Peter Hynes who both commended the biodiversity efforts of Belmullet Tidy Towns. ?It?s All About the Bees and the Seas?will continue to be exhibited in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet until 12 August.
