Killala diocese students will receive the Pope John Paul two awards in the Newman Institute Ballina on Friday 20th of September at 8pm from Bishop John Fleming. The national co-ordinator of the awards program Mr Tony Brennan will be present. Also there will be the annual trip to Knock for award students, anyone between the age of 16 and 18 on the 27th of September.

?The Push of Lola the Toyota?. This is our second year running this event and we had a massive success last year; with raising over ?4,000 for our charities. How this event works is that on September 28th 2019 at 2pm with the help of everyone, we push a car from Dennys Ferry Bar / Store to Connollys Pub - which is approximately over four miles, which on the journey we encounter various hills and rocky roads. We do this nonsense for a reason and that is close to us all which is (hopefully) giving funds to cancer charities such as Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation, Downs Syndrome Ireland Cara Iorrais, along with 10% raised to Ballyglass RNLI and the Order of Malta Ireland - Ambulance Corps - Belmullet / Erris. We would appreciate you spreading the word of the event with your family, friends staff and anyone you think would have an interest in what we hope to do! On the day we have a lot of fun after the ?#push?, we will have a #raffle and also a #BBQ which will be a grateful sight after our hard work. We would be grateful if you would consider sponsoring our madness but most importantly take part, we would love to see an even bigger crowd there this year! See you on the 28th.

This week we will look at transferring the family farm from one generation to the next. This can be a difficult, costly and in many cases a very stressful process. On average the life expectancy of a person living in Ireland is early to mid-80s, giving a retirement period of 20 years. In many cases, parents are not ready to retire, but the successor is reaching 35 years of age, after which the stamp duty exemption does not apply. This can mean that the farm will need to provide two incomes, until the parents reach pension age, and be in receipt of extra income. Living out our lives in our own home is not always possible because different levels of care may be required for health reasons. While the ?Fair Deal Scheme? is available to contribute to the costs, it does put a cost against the estate. Therefore, it is very important to make a will so that each family member knows exactly where he/ she stands. For a will to be valid in Ireland the person making the will must be 18 or over acting of their own free will and be of sound mind, memory and understanding. You must know the nature and extent of your property. The document must be signed by yourself or by someone in your presence under your direction. The signature must be witnessed by two other people present at the same time. A witness or his/ her spouse cannot benefit from the will. When a person dies and there is not a will or there is an invalid will the person is said to have died intestate. The person?s assets are then distributed under the succession act of 1965. Under this act the spouse receives two thirds and the children share the remainder of the estate equally. If the couple have no children, the spouse gets the entire estate. If the person's spouse has died before them, the children share the entire estate equally. In the event of the person dying while their parents are still living each parent is entitled to half of the estate even if the deceased had brothers and sisters. If both parents are deceased, then siblings are entitled to equal shares. In the event of one of these siblings being deceased then their share is divided between their children. The executor of the will must contact the Department of Agriculture to inform them that the farmer has died. The Department has an inheritance enquiry unit to assist the representatives of the deceased in relation to any schemes or programmes that the farmer was involved in. The main issues are change to registration details of the heard number/ heard keeper, payment of any outstanding monies due and the transfer of any basic payments/ entitlements held. When the Regional Veterinary Office is notified of the death, it is recorded on the Department system which changes the herd owner details. Any queries should be forwarded to the inheritance enquiry unit in the DAFM, Knockmay Rd, Portlaoise, Co. Laois or phone 1890 252238. Next week we will look at tax implication when transferring the farm. Email all your farming questions to farming@erriseye.com

Fruit trees are a lovely sight in every season. September is an ideal time to harvest fruit from your garden trees. It is also a perfect time to plant fruit trees, while the soil is still warm and moist. Growing your own fruit trees yields many benefits. Firstly, it allows you to promote your family?s wellbeing with organic foods. Secondly, it helps preserve health with a green lifestyle. It can also contribute eco-friendly solutions to global issues; protect wildlife, rewild natural lands, and conserve the environment. Lastly, you can enjoy pristine and tranquil scenery with your family, straight from your own backyard. 6 Benefits of Growing Fruit Trees 1. Promote Well-being: Homegrown fruits are known to promote well-being. Food security and nutrition is an essential concern to any household. Growing your own fruit gives you more control over what is in your food and where it comes from. It also provides you with incredible flavours and a rich source of variety for your daily needs. Organic food also helps in reducing the demand for conventionally grown fruit. What better way to enjoy fruits without losing their freshness? Pick them straight from your backyard, instead of having them shipped from a thousand miles away. 2. Preserve Health: Growing your own food is linked with many health benefits. A canopy of fruit trees can improve air quality. Well-placed trees serve as a physical filter to trap dust and absorb pollutants in the air. Studies have shown that trees can lower the dust level in the air by as much as 75%. The presence of trees in a neighbourhood has proven to improve the health of residents. Trees clean the air and provide fresh air to the surrounding community. 3. Strengthen Local Pride: Strengthen local pride and interaction within the community. Planting trees or a garden within a community brings an community together. A community garden provides a communal space for walking, jogging and spending time. Fruit trees in a community are a rich educational resource for children. Children can engage in bird watching, playing and adventuring or gardening. With specific plants and trees growing in particular communities, these trees can help to strengthen a community?s distinctive character and local pride. 4. Contribute Eco-Friendly Solutions to Global Issues: By planting fruit trees, you can help reduce the greenhouse effect and slow the rate of global warming. By absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, trees reduce harmful gases in the air. Growing your own fruit also help to reduce plastic consumption. Fruits can be picked directly from the garden instead of from a shop, where they are packed in plastics. In addition, you are reducing the impact of fossil fuels. The food industry is said to account for 10% of fossil fuel consumption, due to shipping, packaging, transporting and storing food. Conserve the environment with trees?natural benefits. Planting fruit trees and other vegetation work to cool the air, land and water. Trees also block sunlight, reducing temperatures in a city by up to 7°. Flooding and soil erosion can also be prevented by planting trees. Trees absorb thousands of litres of water and reduce surface water runoff. Fallen leaves from fruit trees also reduce soil temperature and soil moisture loss. Upon decaying, these also provide nutrients for tree growth. 5. Protect Wildlife: Protect wildlife and rewild natural lands. Trees offer shelter and food to communities of insects, birds, fungi and lichen. They provide complex micro-habitats and create a healthy ecosystem. Rewild natural lands by sowing native organic fruit trees. The addition of a small pond or bird feeder would compliment the fruit trees. Together, they will attract birds and insects to feed and live within the comfort of your garden. Relax your gardening to allow mother natures natural process of restoration. This creates native ecosystems for pollinators and wild creatures. 6. Enjoy Pristine and Tranquil Outdoor Scenery: Enjoy pristine and tranquil outdoor scenery with your family and with nature. The presence of fruit trees provides attractive views, serene sounds and calming scents. By simply spending time with nature, your whole family can recharge and refresh. Gaze at the lush colours of your fruits and blooms, listen to the restful music of birds, and smell the sweet perfume coming from your scented flowers. Bliss!

Philomena Begley was born and grew up in Pomeroy, County Tyrone, and worked in a hat factory in Cookstown before her break into music. Her first venture as a singer was with the popular Old Cross CĂŠilĂ Band, with whom she sang as a dare, but stayed with the group. The group soon became known as the Old Cross Bandshow and released three records in Ireland in 1968 and 1969, but none made an impression in the charts. In September, 1970, the band changed its name to The Country Flavour. Begley's first record following this became her first chart hit when "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow" reached number seven in the Irish chart. In 1974 she formed the Ramblin' Men, while the Country Flavour continued to tour with several other lead singers (including Eileen King and Dan O'Hara) during the 1970s. Begley regularly toured with Ray Lynam from 1975 and they recorded many duets together, probably their most popular being "My Elusive Dreams", which went on to be mentioned in The Pogues' song, "A Pair of Brown Eyes". In 1975, Begley had a hit with her version of Billie Jo Spears' hit song "Blanket on the Ground" which took her to number five in the Irish charts. Spears also released the song in the United Kingdom and in Ireland at the same time, but in Ireland. Begley's version received the highest sales, as Spears' version only went to number 11. Begley occasionally performed with Spears and later recorded a tribute song to her after the American star's death in 2010. By 1977, she was undertaking a major tour of the United States, and in 1978, she was invited to sing at the Grand Ole Opry by Porter Wagoner. Since then, she has returned annually to Nashville, been a guest of honour at the St. Patrick's Day parade in New York City, and has sung at both the Grand Ole Opry and Carnegie Hall. Philomena Begley is married to Tom Quinn and they have three children Mary, Aiden and Carol. She is also a grandmother. They reside on a farm in Galbally, County Tyrone. Her son Aiden Quinn has also established a singing career for himself. Her niece, Andrea Begley, won the BBC TV Series The Voice in June 2013. She is a regular contributor to the Belfast Telegraph's Lifestyle section.

Keeping a Tidy & Organised file System.... Tip # 1: Stick to Your Filing System- Once you?ve committed to a filing system you will want to stick to it. There are some easy ways to accomplish this. Firstly, file things as close to immediately as possible. This may seem obvious but we?ve seen some pretty gnarly Download folders. By moving files into their appropriate places immediately, you don?t run the risk of losing a file that belongs in one folder amongst the files in another. Tip #2: Avoid the Desktop & Downloads Folder- Anyone that has used a Windows-based PC for any length of time knows that files can be dragged and dropped or saved to the desktop. They also know that every file downloaded that isn?t specifically routed to a folder ends up in the downloads folder. Some users would see this and think, ?Hey, great job, Microsoft! This makes it much easier on me. I can open my computer and, wham, there are all of the files I care about.? This may hold true, for about a month. The more files you deem important and pin to your desktop, taskbar, or leave in your downloads folder, the more of a mess it is going to be. Think of your downloads folder as a foyer of a big house. If everything you brought into the house was left in the foyer, it would become a complete obstruction. The desktop, on the other hand, is a decent place to put top-line folders on, since inside there should be a file structure that would allow you to access all of your data from the desktop of your computer, but the more random files that fill up your desktop, the more convoluted your file management is going to be. Tip #3: Sort Once a Week- Okay, so if you don?t make a habit to immediately file files away in their correct folders, you HAVE to make a point to do it periodically. We suggest once every week or 10 days. After that it starts to get messy, and after a month or two, you are back to square one, with a computer that has files everywhere you don?t want them to be. Tip #4: Naming Practices- If your computer is relatively simple and you have one type of folder for your pictures, when you go into your pictures they aren?t always going to be named ?Puppydog2.jpg?. Sometimes, especially if you get a multitude of pictures from the same website, they will have similar file names. This isn?t an issue when you have a handful of the same files and you can just look at the thumbnails, but if you have thousands of files named similarly it?s going to be a complete nightmare when you go to look for something specific. That?s why you want to name your files uniquely. If you are used to naming a picture of your dog ?puppydog#.jpg? and you have hundreds of pictures of your dog, it?s bound to get confusing. As a result, you will want to name your file something like: puppydog_at_the_park2.jpg?. Small differentiators can create the kind of specificity needed to keep your files organized. Managing your files effectively will save you time and won?t test your patience.

Community Animal Care Sheep

Gastroenteritis or scouring is a common problem now in sheep flocks, especially in weaned lambs. Flocks may have been dosed but there are serious resistance problems with a lot of common wormers used. There are just four categories of sheep wormers 1. Benzimidazole group White drenches e.g panacur, systamex, valbazen, bovex etc : resistance is moderate. 1. Ivermectins, Cydectin/ moxodex, Oramec/ normectin etc Resistance to these drugs is high 1. Levamisole group, levacide/ levapharm Resistance is low 4- Zolvix this is the first new sheep wormer in 40 years No resistance. It is therefore important to rotate wormers A worming strategy would be to use a group one dose first in springtime and use a 2/ 3 drug about 6 weeks later. If lambs are scouring now, Zolvix will eliminate all worms. It only needs to be used once and dosage is 5ml/ 50kg orally. If lambs are still scouring after zolvix then the problem is most likely to be coccidiosis- there are two main vaccines given orally for this. The other problem to consider in sheep now is immature liver fluke trodax, flukiver, ridafluke will treat this.

Cattle Black leg Blackleg is caused by a bacteria called clostridium chauvoei. Its spores live in the soil for decades and get into the bloodstream of cattle via a cut in the skin. It causes a gaseous swelling of the front or back leg with either sudden death or severe lameness. Its 95-100% fatal. If an animal lives, the affected skin falls off and the remainder of the leg is black-hence the name. Fast thriving young stock are very susceptible, so weanlings are most at risk followed by yearlings bulls and thriving 2 year olds. Recently ploughed land leads to an increase in cases, as does lush pastures in the autumn. Vaccination takes 6/ 7 days to work. Strategy Vaccinate weanlings and bulls twice, four to six weeks apart, revaccinate yearlings and thriving older cattle once a year. Cows normally don?t need vaccinating

Grass tetany Grass tetany is primarily a deficiency of magnesium. Milk fever is a deficiency of calcium. Grass tetany cases are also low in calcium and milk fever cases are also low in magnesium. We have seen an upsurge in cases this year due to the lush grass growth. Cows don?t store magnesium and are losing it through milk. Lush grass in autumn is low in these minerals so supplementation with mineral buckets or a small amount of dairy nuts (1-2kg per day) may be necessary. Stress is also a factor. We see grass tetany cases when cows are housed for 2/ 3 days as calves are weaned.

Patrick Corkery swam from Blacksod to Belmullet. Patrick was to swim from Blackrock to Blacksod but sea conditions were not favourable. Not to waste his journey he deciced to do Blacksod to Belmullet. Not bad for a man who had double open lung surgery in January 2016, Patrick's dream was to swim the English channel, this he did 20 months after his surgery. Supported by local boats for his journey. Let's give him some Erris support.
