Editor'sNote A Chairde,
Welcome to issue 99 of the Erris Eye. We love this week's front cover photo. What a super image of Gerry Keane encouraging the girls representing the 'Bing' and the Sheebeen pubs in the women's tug of war competition. Captured by Ryan Gallagher Photography taken at the Inver Festival during the summer. Lots going on around Erris including the Erris Pool League and fundraising and community events like the Lola the Toyota push in Kilcommon this weekend. Read about these and much more inside! 39 There's much focus this week on growing your own food and the health and environmental benefits it brings. Both Maureen and Paraic talk about this very topic. As you probably can guess, our Bridget is an animal lover and her theme this week on the Kids' Page is cats! Again a very informative piece from Michael Neary on farming and a round up of local sports with Michael D McAndrew. Hanneke talks about the importance of grooming your pets in the Animal Care column. So lots to enjoy in the 99th issue of the Erris Eye. Keep the news flowing in to us at info@erriseye.com Le Deá Ghuí, Garry, Frances & Bridget.

Belmullet can be very pleased with their first year back in the senior ranks of Mayo Club Football reaching a quarter final losing to the Moclair Cup Holders. The Erris men really took the game to the Champions in the first half and a Ryan O?Donoghue goal on the quarter of an hour mark had them in positive position leading by three points. However, Ballintubber used all of their experience to grind their way back in to proceedings and 1-6 from Cillian O?Connor helped them on their way to a four point win. Belmullet?s young guns impressed but Eoin O?Donoghue didn?t feature due to a hamstring issue and he was a massive loss. It?s a return to league action this Saturday and Belmullet are in desperate need of points to stay in Division 2. Ballinrobe make the trip to Tallagh and you would suspect that the hosts should have enough to turn over the South Mayo men. Kiltane are on course for promotion at the other end of the table and will fancy their chances of picking up maximum points against Bohola Moy Davitts in Bangor on Saturday evening. Cill Chomain are aiming to win Division 4 and face a huge game against Ardagh in Glenamoy on Saturday evening. Ardagh bowed out of the Junior Championship last weekend and at home you would have to fancy Cill Chomain. Elsewhere, in the Junior C Semi-Final this weekend Belmullet will be looking to advance past Parke/ Keelogue/ Crimlins B team. It would be a major boost for the club to win the title in terms of progression and the game takes place in Knockmore on Sunday at 3pm. In terms of predicting winners for the three main Championships it?s hard to look past Kilmaine for the Junior Title. They have been plying their trade in the Division 2 league for some time and that itself is worth a lot. The Intermediate race is wide open with any one of the remaining four capable of winning it as prior to last weekend I was edging towards Ardnaree or Crossmolina. At this stage I think Ballyhaunis are the best equipped team out of the last 4 to go on and win the Sweeney Cup. The Moclair Cup is also difficult to call, some fancy Ballina to overcome the County Champions but i think the experience Kevin Johnson?s side possess will be too much for the North Mayo men. Castlebar survived somewhat of a scare from Knockmore but similar to Ballintubber they will have enough to see of Ballaghaderreen to set up a familiar final pairing.

Michael Neary Registered Family Partnerships can be the first step in the succession process of the family farm. There is an income tax credit to encourage the planned transfer of farm assets to the next generation while also providing a level of protection for the person transferring the property by allowing them to retain 20% of the farm assets. Share farming provides a way of entry to farming for young trained people. In the context of succession collaborative farming arrangements provide options to all farmers in two ways. It is the first step towards the full transfer of the farm to a son or a daughter and secondly gives the option of working together with another farmer through partnership, shared farming, contract rearing, or cow leasing. It simply means two or more farmers can come together in an arrangement that benefits all involved. Partnerships between father/ mother and son/ daughter can benefit both parties. The parents may not yet be ready to?hand over? for many reasons. They may feel that they are too young or may not be in a position to ?hand over? for financial reasons. In a registered partnership the parents are not giving up control of the farm, they are sharing it. They retain ownership of land, buildings, quotas and entitlements. These assets are licenced to the partnerships for use. Stock and machinery are also transferred to the partnership. It gives the parents the opportunity to see how their son or daughter manages to work the farm. The sharing of the profits must be agreed on at the beginning of the process. It is common practice for the parents to gain the larger percentage of profit at the start. The benefits of farmer partnerships are that each person bring their own skills to the partnership such as animal husbandry, financial skills, management skills, computer skills, machinery expertise and building knowledge amongst others. All these skills combined promote good farm practice and in turn increase farm profits. It is worth remembering that a young trained farmer who is less than five years farming and under 40 years of age with level 6 in agricultural education can qualify for a 60% grant in the current on farm investment scheme. In the basic payments scheme, there is a 25% top up for young farmers under 40 who have set up farming in their own right in the previous five years. Young trained farmers in partnership with their parents qualify for this top up on the number of eligible hectares declared each year to a maximum of 50 hectares. Finally, this week, ANC payments have started to roll out and although the full amount will not be paid now, the remainder will be paid the first week in December. 5 Reasons To Grow Your Own Food Getting out into the garden and getting your hands dirty has many benefits. Sowing, growing and harvesting your own fruit, herbs and vegetables reap many rewards and is a relatively easy task. All you need is outdoor space (big or small), seeds, water and a little time. Combine these ingredients and some you will be able to grow your own food. Do you need motivation to start growing your own food? Here we outline 5 very important benefits to creating your own fruit and vegetable garden. We?re sure you will want to grow your own once you know the benefits! 1. Health and Wellness Growing your own fruits, vegetables and herbs is linked with many health and wellness benefits. Planting, weeding and watering your garden is a form of exercise, easily incorporated into your daily routine. Gardening is a leisurely way to spend time outside in the fresh air and with the sun on your back, making us both mentally and physically healthier. As you begin to grow your own fruit and vegetables your interest in fresh, healthy produce piques, this is reflected in your eating habits as you begin to enjoy the fresh food you have grown. Gardening allows one a break from the every day stresses of life. ?We might think we are nurturing our garden, but of course it?s our garden that is really nurturing us? Jenny Uglow 2. Environmental Growing your own food has many environmental benefits: Organically grown food reduces air and water pollution as herbicides or pesticides are not used. Home-grown food does not need to be transported from source to market. This reduces air pollution as planes, ships, trucks and cars are not used to bring the food to your plate. Food waste is reduced as you are less likely to let food soil or be thrown out once you have worked hard to produce it. 3. Relationships As you plant and develop your own garden, food isn?t the only thing that will develop and bloom, your relationships will also flourish. You can involve the entire family in the development of a garden. Kids will love the opportunity to get their hands dirty outdoors and parents will cherish the opportunity to impart their knowledge on to the next generation. Creating a garden gives people a purpose to get outdoors. This pull away from the monotony of a screen encourages interaction and communication among family members. Gardens can be grown as part of a community initiative, developing community relationships and cohesion. 4. Financial Home-grown food leads to financial savings. A successful garden has the ability to fulfill all your fruit, herb and vegetable needs. Once fresh fruit and vegetables are readily available in your garden, your shopping list will shorten as you incorporate these ingredients into your meals. 5. Leisure Growing your own fruits, vegetables and herbs is an enjoyable activity. Gardening is a pastime enjoyed by many. It can be enjoyed all year round and is an inexpensive way to leisurely spend your time. Every gardener will tell you that there is nothing like eating the fruits of your own labour.

Hi all and welcome to this week's article! Delighted with the response I've received from you all but please keep sending those queries. With so much talk recently about global warming and environmental damage each one of us can do our piece to save our planet for our future generations. It was wonderful to see all the youth of Ireland and the world standing up together this week and voicing their concerns about what's happening globally. So what can each one of us do? As much as possible try to buy locally sourced food, whether it's vegetables, eggs, meat etc. First of all that means the food is fresher as the food journey to your table is shorter and therefore better for your health and also the environment as the food hasn't travelled from a country hundreds of miles away so hasn't used resources like diesel or petrol. Growing your own bits of vegetables if at all possible is hugely beneficial to your health, wellbeing and your pocket! Also the flavours from home grown stuff is much nicer. This year I made a decision to try grow a few bits of veg myself so I purchased a Vegepod. It was the best decision I ever made. This is like a raised bed container with a lid so I didn't have to dig up the ground which made the whole process a lot easier. Within weeks I had lots of stuff growing and ready to use. The taste was unreal! I would recommend a Vegepod to anyone. There are three different sizes so if you have limited space there's one to suit you. Locally we have farms like Western Shore organics who produce organic meats and vegetables. You can get your organic turkey for Christmas so go check those guys out. Modern society has become so throwaway that it really is impacting on our health and also on our planet. You don't have to spend hours slaving in a hot kitchen to produce a meal. You can have a fresh meal prepared and on the table in under half an hour rather than resorting to ready meals with all their packaging and processed stuff. So it's up to each of us to take responsibility for our own actions. What we are doing now may not impact on us right now but what about our grandchildren and great-grandchildren? Get in contact with me here or @Maureen's Health Academy.

ERRISNEW S Larry Cunningham (13 February 1938 ? 28 September 2012) was an Irish country music singer, who was one of the leading figures of the showband scene in the 1960's and 1970's. Regarded as a "trailblazer" and "legend" in the music industry, he accomplished a series of "firsts" during his career. In 1964, Cunningham broke into the British charts with "Tribute to Jim Reeves", the first time an Irish artist had done such a thing. Larry grew up in the townland of Clooneen in Mullinalaghta parish, near Granard, County Longford, in a farming family of seven children. After leaving school at 16 he went to England and worked as a carpenter, playing Irish traditional music and gaelic football during his spare time. In 1958 he returned to Ireland. Still working as a carpenter, he soon joined the part-time Gowna-based Grafton Showband, but left it in 1961to become fully professional as the lead singer of the Mighty Avons, based in Cavan. That band initially specialised in covers of Jim Reeves songs and similar country material. The band's first taste of fame came when they were supporting Jim Reeves during the Irish leg of his European tour in 1963; when Reeves walked off the stage during a concert in Lifford in protest at the poor condition of the supplied piano, the Avons (as they later became popularly called) took over and entertained the crowd, to much subsequent publicity and acclaim. In December 1964, Cunningham and the Mighty Avons had a Top-10 hit with the song "Tribute to Jim Reeves", which also entered the British charts (the first time for an Irish artiste), and played on Top of the Pops (also an Irish first), which further boosted their career. Their major hit was "Lovely Leitrim" in September 1965, which stayed at number one in the charts for four weeks. As well as regularly touring Ireland to large crowds, the Avons made many appearances on television, and often played in Britain, the USA, and other places. In late 1969, he left the Mighty Avons and merged with Edenderry band The Fairways to form Larry Cunningham and the Country Blue Boys, leaving Gene Stuart to front the Avons. Cunningham continued having success with his new band, but after his marriage in 1972 he gave up regular touring in favour of occasional concerts and recording. He continued to have top-10 hits until the mid-1970s, and still performed occasionally for the remainder of his life. In recent years, audio and video compilations of his music have been released, as well as a biography.

Why it is important to groom your dog regularly! Matted hair on pets is not only uncomfortable it can cause serious health issues. Matted hair is most common on non-shedding dogs but longhaired shedding dogs tend to get matted too. A few mats is common but when matting gets close to the skin or become one big mat it becomes a problem. Matted hair will hold tears, faeces and urine next to the skin. This will cause irritation, pain and skin infections because trapped moisture will cause damage to the skin. If left for a long time it can cause skin changes (hyperpigmentation and/ or hyperkeratosis). Heavy matted hair can change the animals movement, cut off circulation or hide infected wounds. In extreme cases it can tighten around a leg or the tail and slowly constrict until is has cut through the skin to the bone.
To help these matted dogs the groomers needs to either do a manual dematting or a close shave which both are uncomfortable for the animal. Shaving a dog is a temporary solution. If a clipper cannot slide between your dog's skin and the matting, dematting is necessary to begin removing hair. In this scenario, it is rarely possible for your dog to come home with a cute, even shave. A close shave, with or without mats, can cause friction burns because the moving parts of the clippers are so close to the dogs skin. The blades will have be changed and cooled regular to protect the skin from heat burn. Only when a coat is free of all mats and tangles is it possible to groom the dog properly and only then you can get the result of a lamb or fluffy cat. To prevent a matted coat don't leave it too long between grooming appointments. If your dog's coat is damaged or beginning to tangle bring her in for a complete groom. When broken hairs, split ends and loose hairs are removed you prevent matting. A close trim in places where matting is beginning can give 6 - 8 weeks free of matting in those areas. Especially when the coat is brushed once a week there will be no mats till the next groom. We hope to see you soon!
