The Homemaker's Scheme

Question I?m going to take some time off work to look after my children. What effect will this have on my contributions for the State pension? Answer (May 2016) Under the Homemaker?s Scheme, time you spend out of the workforce caring for children or a person with a disability can be disregarded when calculating your entitlement for a State Pension (Contributory). The scheme came into effect on 6 April 1994 (time spent homemaking before this is not taken into account). You do not get credits for years spent out of the workforce. Instead these years will be disregarded when working out your entitlement to a State Pension (Contributory). However, you may get credits for the remainder of the year you leave the workforce, and for part of the year when you rejoin the workforce. A homemaker, for the purposes of the Homemaker?s Scheme is a man or woman who provides full-time care for a child under the age of 12 or an ill or disabled person aged 12 or over. A homemaking year is a year in which you are out of the workforce for the full tax year. Up to a maximum of 20 homemaking years can be disregarded when working out your entitlement to a State Pension (Contributory). To qualify for a State Pension (Contributory) you must have a minimum yearly average number of contributions from when you entered social insurance to pension age. The Homemaker?s scheme provides that full contribution years spent caring in the home are disregarded in calculating a person?s yearly average number of contributions. Take, for example, a woman who started work in 1985, took 10 years out of work to care for children from 1995 to 2005 and then returned to work for another 20 years before retiring in 2025 and applying for a State Pension. Her yearly average would be calculated over 30 years instead of 40 years when the 10 years spent in the home are disregarded. Further information is availableCitizensInformatioCentresand from the Citizens Information Phone Service, call 0761 07 4000.

The Human Library is a worldwide equalities movement for social change that challenges prejudice and discrimination through social contact. It uses the mechanism of a library to facilitate respectful conversations between people whose paths may never normally cross in life. Just like in a real library, a visitor to the Human Library can choose a Book from a range of titles, the difference is that the Books are real people, and reading is a conversation. The purpose of the Human Library is to challenge what we think we know about other members of our community. To challenge both our own internal prejudices as well as social prejudices. It is a space where difficult questions are accepted, expected and appreciated. The hope is that by meeting and witnessing people on a more human level, and hearing their life experiences, these respectful conversations can positively change people?s attitudes and behaviours towards members of our community who are at risk of exclusion or marginalisation. As humans?racism and prejudice can only exist when we see ?the other?as separate from us, or as somehow different from us. When we ?meet?people and witness them from the point of our common humanity it is very difficult to hold onto prejudice, especially when we see and hear first-hand the depth of their human experience. The Castlebar Human Library project takes place on June 13th 2016 3-7pm in Catlebar Town Library. There will be a range of title to choose from the ?Human Books?and some of the themes covered are, addiction, mental health, sexuality, teenage mother, brain tumour, refugee, suicide, among others. If people would like to be a ?Human Book?they can email ruachrhythms@gmail.com. All books have to go through an interview process and will be screened for suitability. For further information, people can contact the Library directly or contact Debbie on 087 6326610 or Breda on 0877738312

Wild Atlantic Hobie Regatta The Wild Atlantic Hobie Regatta promises to be one of Mayo?s sailing highlights of Summer 2016. Catamaran sailors and their fast and colourful craft are coming from all over the country to compete in a fun event on the water between Achill and Ballycroy. The Mulranny to Achill Greenway will be the viewing platform to a marine amphitheatre. The event is being co-hosted by Bellacragher Boat Club and Cumann Bádóirí Acla with support from the Irish Multihull association (IMA) and the Irish Sailing Association (ISA). Three very busy days will commence on Friday 1st July as boats and crews have a shakedown cruise on the bay to familiarise themselves with new surroundings and take in the scenery. Tonragee pier (off the Mulranny to Achill Road past the WAY INN pub) will be the focal point of the event though most boats will launch from Achill Sound and Claggan Ballycroy. On Saturday Afternoon the public will get a chance to see Catamaran sailing and all its thrills and spills up close and personal as four races will take place on the bay between Tonragee, Achill and Ballycroy. Food refreshment and entertainment will be provided by Una and staff at Óstán Oileán Acla with transport arranged for boat crews and support teams. Sunday afternoon will entail a passage race from Tonragee to Achill Sound and back, a long distance race of endurance skill and pilotage. The Regatta is open to all class of catamaran and with support from other sailors around the country, it is hoped that more people will take part in a very exciting and healthy sport. Bellacragher Boat Club and Cumann Bádóirí Acla are committed to the principle of making sailing accessible and affordable for all and will be delighted to arrange a sailing experience for anyone interested in taking up the sport. Sponsorship is provided by Mayo County Council, Hobie Cat Europe and local businesses. After several weeks of hard work, the Department of Education & Skills today submitted a planning application with Mayo County Council for a change of use for Marsh House, Castlebar, to be used as a school for Castlebar Educate Together NS. Marsh House is a historic building, formerly used as administrative offices by Castlebar Town Council. In parallel to the planning application, a lease agreement for the property will be put in front of Mayo County Council in July. In order for the building to be used as a school, it will require both planning permission and the approval of the councillors at the July meeting. Educate Together and the department are happy that Mayo County Council are very supportive of this proposal, and are doing everything to make sure it happens on time. Educate Together are happy that this is a very good place for the school to start out in September this year.
