Linenhall Arts Centre Celebrates 25th Birthday The Linenhall Arts Centre located on Linenhall Street is currently celebrating 25 years of delivering an excellent arts service to all in the region. The building itself is just a little older, dating back to 1790. It was built at a time when Mayo grew an enormous amount of flax, a crop that was turned into linen thread in very many small cottages in the county. This thread was then brought to the Linen Hall where buyers from all over the country arrived to bargain and trade at monthly markets. The Linenhall is bigger and busier than ever today with a myriad of arts events and activities programmed throughout the year. The building went through a major refurbishment in 2000 and now includes a dedicated visual arts space, multi-disciplinary theatre and workshop. The workshop space is often regarded as the heart of the building with all sorts of activities, singing, writing painting, drawing going on there at all hours of the day and night. The programme for children is one of the best in the country. Plans are in place for a major birthday party on Culture Night, September 18 and all are welcome. Expect a lot more details of the fabulous autumn programme in the coming weeks but you can get a sneak preview now of some of the highlights on the

The exhibition, curated by Catherine Marshall and supported by the Arts Council and Mayo County Council, will be made up of a number of solo and group exhibitions by artists gathered together through invitation and open submission. We would like to invite artists born in or who have lived and worked in Mayo to write to us if you would like to be considered for inclusion in a group exhibition. All expressions of interest must be accompanied by a pdf containing a recent CV, five images of your work and/ or links to film work online and a brief proposal (up to 300 words) of what you would like to show in relation to Kathleen Lynn. Expressions of interest should be sent to kathleenlynnexhibition@gmail.com. to arrive no later than 12 August 2015. Much has been written about Lynn who was born in Mullaghfarry near Killala in 1874 and spent her childhood in Co. Mayo, before going on to qualify as a medical doctor. She was a leader in the struggle for better living conditions for women and children, supported the workers in the 1913 Lock Out in Dublin, fought for women?s suffrage, and participated in the 1916 Rising for which she was imprisoned. She went on to co-found Saint Ultan?s Hospital for Infant Children, the first of its kind in Ireland, she was elected to the Dáil but did not take her seat and finally stepped back from direct political action in order to dedicate herself to the health of mothers and children. For further information see Kathleen Lynn, Irishwoman, patriot, doctor, by Margaret Ó hÓgartaigh, Irish Academic Press, Dublin 2006. The writer and historian Sinead McCoole has kindly agreed to act as advisor to the exhibition.

Keep an Eye on Community Protect your Key People? . The Importance of Life Cover! In today?s challenging times being financially prepared for what?s around the corner is more important than ever before. Most of us know that we need to protect ourselves, our families and homes against the financial hardship that could be caused by an illness or death in a family. The main purpose of financial protection is to make sure you won't have money problems if a misfortune like an accident, death or illness happens in your family. Basically, all protection policies are designed to replace lost income and provide a money benefit when it is needed most. Think of all the things that would still need to be paid for - the mortgage, the bills, day-to-day living expenses, credit card debts and so on. These won't go away if you or your partner cannot work or if you die. And the last thing a family needs in a situation like this is money worries. We at M&C Financial Services want to provide our clients with the best options available in the market at any time, most of us shop around for the best deal on our house and car insurance, but don?t realise we can shop around for the best life or serious illness quotation also. This Month in 1915 Charles Kettering receives patent for electric self-starter Charles F. Kettering, co-founder of Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company (DELCO) in Dayton, Ohio, is issued U.S. Patent No. 1,150,523 for his ?engine-starting device??the first electric ignition device for automobiles?on August 17, 1915. Keep an Eye On In the early years of the automobile, drivers used iron hand cranks to start the internal combustion History process that powered the engines on their cars. In addition to requiring great hand and arm strength, this system was not without certain risks: If the driver forgot to turn his ignition off before turning the crank, the car could backfire or roll forward, as at the time most vehicles had no brakes. Clearly a better system was needed, and in 1911 Cadillac head Henry M. Leland gave Charles Kettering the task of developing one. Before founding DELCO with his partner Edward Deeds in 1909, Kettering had worked at the National Cash Register Company, where he helped develop the first electric cash register. He drew on this experience when approaching his work with automobiles. Just as the touch of a button had started a motor that opened the drawer of the cash register, Kettering would eventually use a key to turn on his self-starting motor. The self-starter was introduced in the 1912 Cadillac, patented by Kettering in 1915, and by the 1920s would come standard on nearly every new automobile. By making cars easier and safer to operate, especially for women, the self-starting engine caused a huge jump in sales, and helped foster a fast-growing automobile culture in America. United Motors Corporation (later General Motors) bought DELCO in 1916, and Kettering worked as vice president and director of research at GM from 1920 to 1947. Other important auto-related innovations developed during Kettering?s tenure were quick-drying automotive paint, spark plugs, leaded gasoline, shock absorbers, the automatic transmission, four-wheel brakes, the diesel engine and safety glass. He helped develop the refrigerant Freon, used in refrigerators and air conditioners, and the Kettering home in Dayton was the first in the country to be air-conditioned. In the realm of medicine, Kettering created a treatment for venereal disease and an incubator for premature infants, and in 1945 he and longtime General Motors head Alfred P. Sloan established the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research in New York City. Kettering died in 1958.

This is such a pretty way to organize small things a drawer. So much classier than those expensive plastic dividers. I have quite a few lovely little teacups and saucers that I am just not using in my decor right now. Brilliant to use them in a drawer for jewelry instead of leaving them sitting in a dark cabinet!
Store your sauce pan lids on the inside of the cupboard doors with the use of self adhesive hooks, a great space saving idea and keeps tidy and organised.

Keep an Eye on Services AIRCsupporting children with disabilities in Mayo was set up in 2009 by parents who they themselves have children with disabilities. We started out wanting to know how we could make life easier and more fun for our kids but also wanted to learn how to make life easier and fun for us parents too. It is important to get out there and meet other mammies and daddies that are going through the same as you. Not to feel that you are alone. Because you are NOT. We do all sorts, sensory cinema screenings in Castlebar, nights out for parents, workshops for the children, classes for our parents, help towards respite and equipment, advocate, and what we feel is more important a help line. We continuously liaise with service providers, regular Easter/ Christmas and Halloween parties and our biggest fundraiser of the year is our gala ball, "festive feast" which takes place in Breaffy Hotel Castlebar. We meet on the 1st Monday of every month @7.30 pm for an hour or so. But check our Facebook page for any changes as due to family commitments we may need to cancel. We are all volunteers who do this all in our spare time as well as a busy home life and maybe work at the same time. We welcome everyone on any level to join us. We also welcome volunteers to work with us in helping us with communication, advocacy, support and fundraising. Due to the ongoing fundraising projects that we run we are always looking for help. All our monies stay in Mayo and go straight to the children of AIRC. The only way AIRC can carry on going is through fundraising and donations. We would like to thank all of the businesses in Castlebar, Westport and Ballina who have really been so generous to us over the past few years.

I didn?t know it at the time, I was only 10, but the day the old golf pro, at Cow Glen Golf Club, near Glasgow died, would prove be the start of the amazing odyssey that has been my life. A life dominated by chasing a little white ball around the World. The friends I have met, the money I have made, the lifestyle I have enjoyed all link back to that dumpster! The dumpster where they put 60 years worth of old clubs, balls and rubbish that the old pro had accumulated in his tiny little pro shop. From it my uncle Forbes, whom I happened to be visiting, rescued a hand full of hickory-shafted clubs, which were promptly cut down and sent back with me in England. My parents didn?t play golf so I started hitting balls on my own on a playing field. Soon after, I persuaded my parents to get me into a club as a junior member. For the next 8 years I spent every waking hour, other than school, at Lilleshall and later Shifinal golf clubs. The handful of kids I played with there are still my best friends today although I moved 4,000 miles away. The knowledge I gained about life and business on those fairways surpassed anything I ever learned in college. Although my golf did get me a full scholarship. Make no mistake about it, getting your kids involved in golf will be one of the greatest and most valuable gifts you will ever give them! I grew up in the late 70?s and sure we had video games like Space Invaders and Pac-man but it was an afterthought, not a lifestyle. Today?s kids need more than ever to get away from the computer games and get out and socialize with real people not virtual people. Golf is by far the very best way to accomplish that and set your kids up for success in life. Here is Why: 1. Anyone Can Play: Golfers come in all shapes and sizes. You don?t have to be particularly strong, tall, lean or fast to succeed. Golf champions come in every shape and size imaginable. It?s never too early to start, and unlike most other sports you can enjoy golf your entire life! 2. Minimal Risk: Unlike many other popular sports like baseball, soccer and Football, the chances of injury, especially serious injury, are almost non- existent; golf is a non-contact sport. 3. Safe and positive environment: The golf course is a safe place and facilitates mentoring relationships. 4. Lifelong friendships: You never know who you will meet on a golf course, but it?s one of the easiest place in the world to make friends. Success breeds success and people who play golf are by in large more successful than the average bear. Those are the people you want your kids hanging out with! Best of all, golf creates a unique bond so those friendships can be developed all over the world and last a lifetime! 5. Prepare for business: It?s hard to think about it now but kids grow up and the people they meet as children can play a huge part in their success later in life. Golf is a sport that helps prepare kids and teens for careers in business and other professional arenas. Even at 12 I was learning about real life business every day from all the adults I played with. 6. Time Spent Outdoors: In today?s world of video games, smart phones and child obesity, it can be hard to drag your son or daughter off the couch. Golf is the perfect excuse to spend an entire day enjoying nature and presents the opportunity to develop healthy lifelong exercise habits! 7. Important Life Lessons: Golf closely parallels real life as one experiences the highs and lows of the game. The range of experience, from birdies to bogeys, rewards a young person?s ability to keep each shot in perspective, manage one?s emotions, maintain a positive outlook and focus on the shot at hand. Golf is a sport that will teach your child things like integrity, discipline and respect. As they learn to conduct themselves on the golf course, these lessons will translate directly into everyday life. 8. College Scholarships: Avid golfers have a lot of opportunities when it comes to college funding. The earlier your child starts, the greater his or her chance is of gaining access to scholarship money. 9. Spend time with family: Golf is a game that encourages family participation. When children are young, they enjoy doing just about anything with you (but it doesn?t long last so start now). Golf is an opportunity for quality bonding time and it?s one that can last a lifetime. 10. It?s FUN: This should probably be at the top of the list, but one of the best reasons to get your son or daughter involved with golf is that they?ll have an absolute blast. They?ll have the chance to learn new skills both physical and mental, make new friends and discover new opportunities. There are a million things you can buy your kids or gift your kids in the hope that it helps them learn and grow, only a few make a real impact. Encouraging them to play golf is one! Next Steps: Get your kids some lessons with a local golf pro. Get them a junior membership, at your local golf course normally amazingly cheap compared to other activities. Give yourself a high five for doing something that will make a real difference in your child?s life! I know it did in mine? I can?t tell you, what an amazing difference golf has made to my life. Although I had hoped to become a golf professional, I never did. In the end it didn?t really matter, the travel, friendships, business opportunities and the fact that at 52 I can still easily walk 36 holes in a day, more than made up for it! Thank you Mum and Dad!
