Community 50-50-50 Success The Erris Children of Chernobyl 50-50-50 sale took place on Saturday, August 3, on Main Street, Belmullet. It was a fantastic success - big thanks to all those who contributed items to sell and to all those who came and bought them! There were so many good deals to be had and those that were on the ball were there bright and early in order to nab the best bargains! There were designer dresses and bags (some never worn and many more only worn once), there was Waterford crystal and Galway crystal (still in their original boxes) and there were toys and furniture, to name a few categories! As the name of the sale suggests, there were 50 items for sale, with 50% of the sale price going back to the owner, and the other 50% going towards the charity. We brought in over €1,000 in one day, which means the charity got over €500 and all of the original owners gained quite a few euro for items that were no longer being used! Winners all around! There is a strong possibility that another 50-50-50 sale will be organised - perhaps for next spring. If you have any relatively substantial items to sell, don't hesitate to get in touch - email rosemariemangan@hotmail.com sooner rather than later! Míle buíochas arís to all those who supported this unusual event.

The Irish Wheelchair Association Belmullet
wish to thank most sincerely the Ruddy family and young Dylan Ruddy for offering to do the Ellybay challenge to raise funds for the association. The event was an outstanding success with a huge turnout for the event. With adverse weather conditions and a strong current on the afternoon, the challenge was made all the more difficult, but true to form, Dylan was not deterred. Dylon and Prince swam the bay in record time. Once in the water, all that was visible was both the horse and riders head. After twenty minutes in the water Dylan and Prince emerged onto the beach in Ellybay to a rapturous applause from the onlookers. Everyone agreed this was an historic day in Ellybay and already plans are under way for next year’s bigger and even better event in Ellybay. The IWA want to thank all who sponsored this young man on the fair day and who turned up to support him on Saturday the 17th of August. Dylan is truly a gifted horse man and a great ambassador for young people in Erris. We are very proud and grateful to be associated with this event and all funds raised will be put towards the running of the centre in Logmore. CLOTHES RECYCLING APPEAL It’s clear out time again and the Irish Wheelchair Association Logmore are appealing to people to drop off their old clothes, shoes and bags to the centre in Logmore for recycling. You can call Rosaleen on 087 0571393 for more details. The Irish Wheelchair Association wish to thank everyone who supported their little dog racing on Barrack Street on Heritage Day. We had great fun with the children and we wish to complement the committee of the Belmullet festival for once again orgainsing a fantastic week of fun and entertainment in Belmullet. Well done to all involved.

Blackberry-Picking
s i a r r o Keep an eye on Lifestyle I l i ú S
Late August, given heavy rain and sun For a full week, the blackberries would ripen. At first, just one, a glossy purple clot Among others, red, green, hard as a knot. You ate that first one and its flesh was sweet Like thickened wine: summer's blood was in it Leaving stains upon the tongue and lust for Picking. Then red ones inked up and that hunger Sent us out with milk cans, pea tins, jam-pots Where briars scratched and wet grass bleached our boots. Round hayfields, cornfields and potato-drills We trekked and picked until the cans were full Until the tinkling bottom had been covered With green ones, and on top big dark blobs burned Like a plate of eyes. Our hands were peppered With thorn pricks, our palms sticky as Bluebeard's. We hoarded the fresh berries in the byre. But when the bath was filled we found a fur, A rat-grey fungus, glutting on our cache. The juice was stinking too. Once off the bush The fruit fermented, the sweet flesh would turn sour. I always felt like crying. It wasn't fair That all the lovely canfuls smelt of rot. Each year I hoped they'd keep, knew they would not.
Seamus Heaney Bogland for T. P. Flanagan We have no prairies To slice a big sun at evening-Everywhere the eye concedes to Encrouching horizon, Is wooed into the cyclops' eye Of a tarn. Our unfenced country Is bog that keeps crusting Between the sights of the sun. They've taken the skeleton Of the Great Irish Elk Out of the peat, set it up An astounding crate full of air. Butter sunk under More than a hundred years Was recovered salty and white. The ground itself is kind, black butter Melting and opening underfoot, Missing its last definition By millions of years. They'll never dig coal here, Only the waterlogged trunks Of great firs, soft as pulp. Our pioneers keep striking Inwards and downwards, Every layer they strip Seems camped on before. The bogholes might be Atlantic seepage. The wet centre is bottomless.

An Réal Caillte Chonaic garda síochána strainséir ag féachaint isteach go truachánta sa Life i mBaile Átha Cliath tamall ó shin. Chuaidh sé anonn chuige - Albanach a bhí ann - agus d'fhiafraigh sé de cad a bhí air. Ní fhuair mé freagra uaidh acht "Níl sé fíor, níl sé fíor." "Cad nach bhfuil fior?" ars' an garda. "Bhuel," ars' an tAlbanach,"dubhras liom nuair a bhíos ag teacht go Baile Átha Cliath go mbéadh ádh mór orm dá gcuirinn réal sa Life." "Agus nach raibh?" ars' an garda. "Ni raibh, go deimhin," ars' an tAlbanach,"Bhris an snáithe!"
Barróga is Póga Bhí fear ann i gcathair mhór agus post an- tábhachtach aige. Bhí sé saibhir agus bhí meas an- mhór air. Bhí Lá Nollag ag teacht go luath ach bhí an fear ró - gnóthach chun a thabhairt faoi deara. Cuireadh soilse geala suas ar fud na cathrach agus seinneadh carúil sna sráideanna agus sna siopaí. I bhfhuinneogaí na siopaí bhí bréagáin agus éadaí nua agus a lán earraí eile ach ni raibh baint ar leith ag na rudaí leisean. Oíche Nollag tháinig a athair abhaile tuirseach confach ón mhéid oibre a bhí déanta aige. Thug sé faoi deara go raibh a mhac ag fuaidreamh ar cheann de na bronntanais faoin chrann Nollag, bosca beag cuachta i pháipéir órbhuí. In ard a chinn dúirt sé lena mhac gan bacadh leis an bronntanas sin. Stad an buachaill agus thit deoir gheal óna shúil agus é ag amharc go brónach ar a athair. Maidin lá arna mhárach, Lá Nollag, d ’ fhoscail an teaghlach na bronntanais amach. Faoi dheireadh bhí aon bhronntanas amháin fágtha faoin chrann Nollag. Thóg an bhuachaill é agus thug sé do athair é. Ba é an bosca beag órbhuí. D ’ amharc an fear ar an bhosca geal. "Cad é seo, a stór?," d ’ fhiafraigh sé do mhac. "Bosca lán póg agus barróg duit, a dhaidí," arsa a mhac agus chuir sé a lámh i láimh a athair. ón lá sin go dtí an lá inniú, ar dheasc an fhir, tá bosca beag órbhuí ina shuí ag meabhrú dó faoin rud is tábhachtaí sa domhan... Grá.

Get the Kids Involved If you get the kids involved in the shopping, chopping and selecting fruits & veggies, they’ll be much more likely to eat them! Don’t worry if the lunchbox comes home with uneaten fruit/veg – just persevere. You’re aiming to make fruits and veggies normal for your kids, so don’t worry if they don’t automatically gobble them up – especially if they’re not used to them. Take a long term approach – don’t nag your kids (which can be counterproductive), just keep packing fruit & veg and offering gentle encouragement.

Keep an eye on Community Helix, here we come! There are only a few days left until the 2013 National SuperValu TidyTowns Awards ceremony, which will take place at The Helix in Dublin. Belmullet Tidy Towns are very excited to be invited to it – this means that we’ve won something! Last year, we were delighted to win the silver medal award. This year, we have no idea what it is. It could be related to the main Tidy Towns competition, or our Tourism Town entry, or the Biodiversity Award. The winners of all competitions will be announced on September 9 and all results will appear immediately after the ceremony on www.tidytowns.ie – the website of the national initiative, which is now in its 55th year. However, we intend to publish a brief report of our own results on Facebook as soon as possible, so make sure you have Liked our page! If you are not a Facebook user, you can still view the page – www.facebook.comTidyTownsBelmu llet - it is accessible to everyone. The performance of our town has improved every year, we are happy to report. The maximum number of points is 400. These are the points that we have achieved every year so far: 2005 – 230; 2006 – 247; 2007 – 266; 2008 – 279; 2009 – 282; 2010 – 287; 2011 – 289; and 2012 – 297. We are all hoping for the best on September 9, but we must remember that we don’t stop tidying up - we must continue to work together to improve our town all year around. In the meantime, fingers crossed, everybody!
Bernie launches Birds of Blacksod Bay Bernie Rowe, Erris Person of the Year, launched the Birds of Blacksod Bay project (Phase Two) on August 21. It was a short and sweet event, coinciding with a BBQ party at the tidal pool. Míle buíochas to Bernie and also to Cathy Seale, for the lovely drawings from which the illustrations of the birds have been taken. Don’t forget to have a look at this lovely project next time you are walking out by Shore Road!
Míle buíochas to all those involved in stripping back the well at Stripe, and in clearing out the unused boats. There’s still more work to be done here on this shoreline and around the Dock area. We hope that you will help us. We’ll let you know when the next scheduled clean-up will take place.
Míle Buíochas Míle buíochas to Bernie and Tom Rowe for opening their award-winning garden to the public on August 23. It was a lovely day, with tea, coffee and scrumptious treats to eat! We raised €146.61! Thanks also to all those who came along, and congratulations to Aidan Barrett who won the draw for the compost bin!
An bhfaca tú …? There’s always so much happening around the town – little changes and improvements here and there. Have you noticed these . . . ?
Míle buíochas to Bríd Calhoun from Ballycroy National Park for a very interesting talk in Áras Inis Gluaire on August 14. There was some surprising information, revealing that there are many invasive plants, including, for example: the dreaded giant rhubarb and Japanese knotweed, and the much-loved (but nevertheless invasive) rhododendron and montbretia!
Another sign at Ballina Road that has attracted a lot of positive attention – the ‘Tír na dTraonach’ sign. This sign welcomes people to ‘Corncrake Country’. As you may already be aware – the Mullet peninsula is now one of the only locations in the country that you can drive to, on the mainland, in order to hear the corncrake’s call. The birds still return to the islands of Donegal and Galway, but mainland breeding locations are rare. So, we are delighted to embrace this face and we hope it won’t be long before we are known as ‘Tír na dTraonach’ nationally and perhaps even internationally!
The stone at Ballina Road, welcoming people into our town, was put in place at the end of August. It has received a lot of attention on our Facebook Page, and we are delighted with all the compliments and positive comments. We hope that you agree that it is lovely! Míle buíochas to all those involved in this project.
We are very happy to see some changes around the town in relation to our Bin Your Butt campaign. We have seen businesses installing ash bins on walls and also some new freestanding ash bins. Thank you and please keep up the good work!

Keep an eye on Gatherings Crinniú na mBád- A Thank You
The Kiltane Gathering Committee and the organisers of Crinniu na mBad 2013 wish to extend a huge thank you to all those who were involved in any way in this fantastic event. The committee had been working for months on hosting a boat racing event at the Ferry in Tallaghan, an idea that was based on the regatta held there in 1985 as part of the Doohoma Come Home Week. The much anticipated event was opened by one of Tallaghan’s most senior fishermen Sonny Goonan, who was presented with an honorary plaque. There were five races on the day, with several heats held in each as we had such a large volume of entries. We would like to congratulate all the crews who participated, particularly the race winners. The main race was for The Patrick Goonan Memorial Cup and this race was won by P. J Keegan (Junior) and Mark and Michael Leneghan. The women’s race was won by Eimear Holmes and Deirbhle Carey, the Michael Gerard Reilly Memorial Cup 2 crew winners were Edward Doocey and Michael Doocey. The mixed race sponsored by Mangan’s Construction was won by the Donohoe family, TallaghanVincent, Anna and Louise. There was also a 2 crew currach race on the day; winners were Tony Gaughan and Donal Murphy. Finally there were two novelty races with all winners receiving spot prizes and trophies. The success of the day far surpassed our expectations with 550 people in attendance. We thank everyone who attended the event, including visitors from overseas, Erris FM, local traders, Order of Malta and the Bellacragher Boat Club. All who attended enjoyed live music with Tommy Maloney, BBQ with fresh fish and homemade boxty and fish filleting on site. Entry and refreshments were all free of charge, however there were donation buckets to assist with the cost and we raised nearly €600. We were delighted to have support from the RNLI, Geesala Festival, Erris Beo, Irish Coast Guard, Inland Fisheries and local groups, clubs and organisations. We sincerely thank all those who helped prepare for the day, as well as our sponsors, local residents, local businesses and fishermen. We would in particular like to thank the volunteers who offered their time and effort; there were so many people who contributed to the success of Crinniu na mBad and we are grateful to each and everyone one of them for their input. Finally a thank you to Mike Goonan and his family for their support of this event and for allowing us the use of his property. It was nearly 30 years since the last regatta was held at The Ferry and judging by the reactions and feedback we have received it was worth the wait. Here’s to an even bigger and better event in 2014!

Keep an eye on Community WHO GOT HERE FIRST! The different versions of the first people to set foot here on the mullet as told here in the words of our ancestors. The first version I heard is of a man known locally as Mac Maithín (McMahon), when he dug out the foundations to build his house in a place known locally as Cill Bheag (small Church) a term also used in the local dialect as ‘The final resting place’, which lies on the flat side of the land of Termon at the edge of the shore to the north, where he was digging to build a house he dug up a big pot and when he took the lid off it, it was full of gold pieces. After he had removed the gold from the pot, he hung it over the fire to boil the dinner and was using it for a long time. One day he was sitting by the fire keeping an eye on the boiling pot when a man walked in and was invited by Mac Maithín to come and sit by the fire and share with him whatever was in the pot. The stranger was looking at the side of the pot and said there was something very interesting written on it and on asking Mac Maithín where had he found the pot, he told him about digging it up whilst building the house. The stranger said no more about it until after they had eaten dinner and sat talking by the fire afterwards and it was then he told Mac Maithín he was a poor scholar and travelled the country and depended only on the generous ways and goodwill of people like Mac Maithín and all he ever wanted was just enough food to stay alive, it was then he asked the stranger to tell him what was written on the side of the pot Well!, said the poor scholar it says ‘There could be something better on the other side of the bush’, with that the poor scholar got up, thanked Mac Maithín for the food, walked out the door and Mac Maithín watched him until he disappeared out of site over the hill of Eachléim (Aughleam), he then went inside, sat down by the fire and spent all day and all of that night looking at the pot and wondering about what the scholar told him. That night he lay awake in his bed thinking about this and suddenly it came to him, he got up and started digging the other side of the house and he dug up an even bigger pot, full of gold. To this day the place is still known as Teach Mhic Maithín in Iorras (McMahon’s house in Erris). Some of the ruins of this ancient old house are still there to this day; this was widely believed to be the first house ever built in Erris.
