Community New anti-bullying procedures for schools New anti-bullying procedures for schools have been published. The new procedures give direction and guidance to school authorities and school personnel on preventing and tackling bullying behaviour amongst pupils. The procedures apply to all recognised primary and post-primary schools and to centres for education (as defined in the Education Act 1998) attended by pupils under 18. If a school caters for vulnerable adults they also apply to those adult learners. The new procedures define bullying as unwanted negative behaviour, verbal, psychological or physical conducted by an individual or group against another person (or persons) and which is repeated over time. These procedures make clear that this definition includes cyber-bullying and identity-based bullying (such as homophobic bullying and racist bullying). You only have until Tuesday 17 September to get onto the electoral register if you are not already on it or to change your registered address if it is wrong. Check the register online at at checktheregister.ie. Forms must arrive at your local authority on or before Tuesday 17 September.

Benefits of Shopping Locally in Erris *Money Spent Here Stays Here If residents of Erris would transition just a small percentage of their outof-Erris retail spending to in-Erris spending, local businesses would gain badly needed additional sales. *Jobs and Wages Supporting local businesses provides support to the jobs they offer. An increase in local spending could add new jobs to the area. *Local Business Owners Invest in our Community Local businesses are owned or managed by people who live and work in our communities, raising their families and investing in our communities' futures. They support our sports clubs, our churches, our schools, our organisations, our quality of life.
Baked Sweet Potatoes
Serves 2 Ingredients: 2 ,100g sweet potatoes, washed 40g Philadelphia Extra Light 2 rashers reduced salt bacon, grilled and chopped 4 cherry tomatoes, quartered Black pepper to taste super crunchy side salad Method: Prick the potatoes and microwave on high for 5 minutes, then transfer to a preheated oven, Gas mark 6/200C for a further 20minutes until cooked through.
Place Under a medium hot grill until browned.
*Convenience Equals Savings Shopping locally saves you time and money. A shopping trip outside of our area costs you for every mile you drive, each way, and valuable time away from your home. Pocket the savings and treat your family to a night on the town! *Green-Friendly Shopping locally reduces your fuel consumption and pollution. Also, local shops help to sustain vibrant, walkable communities, reducing sprawl and the need for car usage. *Keeping Local Euros in the Economy An increase in spending in Erris would induce a boost in industry sales, create more jobs and raise personal income. *Friends and Neighbours Local businesses are staffed by local residents, your friends and neighbours. You get better service from people you know and who know you. And, you can catch up on "what's new" with other customers as you shop. *Non-profits receive greater support Voluntary groups, charities and sports clubs in Erris, receive much of their revenue from contributions and gifts. Your support of local businesses helps to ensure that they are able to continue their corporate giving to our local nonprofits. Your own charitable gifts are a means of spending locally when you keep those donations in Erris. *More choice, better prices Increased sales in retail means quicker turnover of products instore, leads to better buying power by retailers and rewards customers by being able to offer better prices and choice. The Erris Eye would like to promote shopping local for October in Erris. If you have a business in Erris and are interested in this please get in touch. We would ask that local businesses offer a discount or some special offer to customers for the month of October. We will publicise your offer free of charge.

The Well-Travelled Mayo Flag! Barrett Brothers Make it a First for Belmullet
In 2008 students from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th classes in Glencastle National School signed a Mayo flag made by their teacher Miss Ruddy. The flag was then taken into space! Ron Garan, astronaut, who has links to the Erris area, took the flag with him into space as one of his 3 personal items that he was allowed to take on the journey. Afterwards he visited the school and presented a certificate which confirms the Mayo flag travelled 5.5 million miles. This was certified by NASA. The flag and certificate hang proudly in Glencastle National School. Thanks to Collette Corless.
On Sunday 15th September Belmullet played Mayo Gaels in Tallagh. For the first time in the club, four brothers played together. Pictured are Shane, Kieran, Gerry and Darren Barrett of Toorglas. Belmullet won their game 3-6 to 0-9.
Samuel Maguire was born in 1879, in the town land of Mallabracka near the town of Dunmanway in West Cork. He came from a well-respected family who had lived in Mallabracka for the best part of 200 years. The Maguires farmed a large farm by West Cork standards. The farm consisted of the whole town land of about 200 acres (of which only 50 or 60 acres were good, farmland). They were an honest hard-working family who were very much at one with their Catholic neighbours. They were a Church of Ireland family but mixed with everyone Protestant and Catholic alike. Though relatively wealthy they were not full of themselves and would go out of their way to help their neighbours no matter what religion. Sam Maguire Sam himself grew in adulthood to be a tall, slim, broad shouldered man of a gentle nature. Sam had four brothers and two sisters. Willie was the eldest then Mary, Jack, Dick, Paul, Sam and Elizabeth. Willie never married and stayed at home to farm the land. Mary known locally as Moll also did not marry and stayed at home and so did Elizabeth. However, Jack and Dick both went to England and worked in London with Sam. Paul on the other hand married a local girl by the name of Hurley from Inchareagh north of the town. However she was a Catholic and so they emigrated to America. In the early 1970's their son a Catholic priest visited the old homestead. Sam was educated in the Model School in Dunmanway and afterwards the National School in Ardfield, which Michael Collins later attended. Here the local School Master Mr. Madden prepared the boys for the British Civil Service examinations. At the age of 20 Sam successfully passed the exams, as he was an excellent, student, and then he got a job in the London Post Office. Most people, who have heard of Sam Maguire did so because they have heard of the Sam Maguire Cup. But who was the man? Why does the G.A.A. have a cup named after, him? This is not just a minor cup but the All Ireland Senior Football Cup. Maguire never won an All-Ireland medal, never was a president of the G.A.A., so why was this most prestigious cup named after Sam Maguire? Well when Sam Maguire went to London to work in the British Civil Service he joined London Hibernians He had never played in Ireland but probably was influenced by the fact that his local team (The Dohenys) at home in Dunmanway reached the All-Ireland football final in 1897. At this time the All-Ireland final was contested by the clubs who won their county championships and the London champions got a bye into the finals. Hence there was a "home final' and an "All-Ireland Final".
