Number 13, unlucky for some. This is the 13th edition of the Erris Eye. We are not superstitious! The Erris Eye would not be possible without the input of people in communities throughout Erris. We (and others) think that the Erris Eye magazine is a good thing for Erris. It’s something that can be entertaining and useful. It can be so much more. We have limited resources though, and find it impossible to contact all the people we would like to in order to get the articles and stories we would like. Here’s where you come in. There are several clubs and groups in Erris, some of whom we have already made contact with and some we have not. Please, please send us your updates, photos, results, notices of fundraisers – tell everyone what’s happening with your club. Most have committees and there’s usually a nominated person for PR. If you are the PRO or know who that person is, tell them to contact us. If you teach in a school, volunteer with a charity, or have a story to tell, we want to hear from you. If you like to write anything and would like to see it published, send it to us. Anyone who has anything they would like to share through the Erris Eye – send it to us. Are there words to a song that you would like us to print? Get in touch and we will do our best. We want to cover all areas of Erris – not just Belmullet. From Blacksod to Binghamstown, from Bangor to Ballycroy – you must have some juicy stuff going on that you want to share with the rest of us. Carratighe, Rossport – I’m sure someone there has some scéal to tell. Geesala, Doohoma – I know you’re into trad music, golf and darts... what else?? Tell us about it. Three decades of outstanding work by Donal O’Kelly have earned the Dublin writer, actor and theatre director a reputation as a theatrical genius. O’Kelly’s latest work – arguably his most important to date – is a solo piece entitled Ailliliú Fionnuala: A Play About The Shell Corrib Gas Project. Its main character, Keogh, is a Shell PR executive... Ailliliú Fionnuala is a riveting piece of theatre. Judging by its rapturous recent premier run at Dublin’s Lanigan’s Theatre, the play is set to blaze a very bright trail, both nationally and abroad, over the next 12 months.

Keep an eye on Computer Tips Our Top 3 FREE Children’s Apps for the Summer: Keeping the Kids Entertained Has Never Been Easier

Pandora - Free.

This one may not seem like an obvious choice at first, but stick with us: When you get down to it, there’s just nothing quite as entertaining to a child as music. We’ve seen babies transfixed by the radio. With that in mind, why not give your child the gift of music for that road trip to see the grandparents? You can easily do so with Pandora radio, which offers a completely free way for your child to explore as much music as they can possibly stand. Sounds like a pretty sweet, cheap deal to us!

SparkleFish

- Free. Looking to make your child laugh? Do they enjoy MadLibs? If so, then go ahead and snag this free application for both the iPhone and iPad. It offers a similar experience to the classic road trip boredom killer, only instead of writing in your answers with a pencil, you get to speak them and have the iPhone record the results. It’s great fun, and of course, it’s completely free!

Topple - Free. When you stop to break it down, Topple really is one of the best options out there as far as keeping your children entertained. It’s a sort of Tetris in reverse application, offering a block stacking concept that has the munchkins seeing exactly how high they can go. The graphics are cute, too, and the free pricetag means the application won’t be hurting your wallet. Though, it will certainly be saving you some headaches! Trust on this one, Topple is a real winner.

SERVING THE ERRIS AREA

Sport Lesson1 Getting to Grips Left Hand

When you pick up a golf club your hands are the only connection you have with the golf club. For many years the hands (grip) have often been referred to as the steering wheel of the golf swing. I don’t believe this could be more true. Gripping the golf club correctly makes playing this game a much better experience and speeds up the learning process. Gripping the golf club at first glance does not seem like a very difficult thing to do, however, it can take a lot of trial and error to figure out the correct grip for you. This is a fundamental aspect of the game of golf for both beginners and established players. 1.Gripping the golf club is a VERY INDIVIDUAL thing for everyone that plays golf and there are no two grips alike. You can only find what works for you through hitting golf balls. There are no hard and fixed rules only some basics, but ultimately, results on the golf course speak louder than me. 2.The grip does more to effect actual ball flight than anything else in the game. That’s why we’ve started with the grip. It’s the foundation of the swing, and a quick fix for those established golfers having problems with hitting the ball left to right or right to left. The more you grip the golf club in the fingers, the faster you can swing the golf club and the quicker the clubface will come back to a square angle in relation to the ball. If you grip the golf club in the palm, the slower the golf club will travel and the longer it takes for the clubface to come back square. The grip wil give you ultimate control over the angle of the clubface and in turn the direction of the flight of the ball. An incorrect grip will allow the angle of the clubface to put spin on the ball and thus affect the direction. Now that the left hand is in place you are going to place the right hand on the golf club. 3. With your right hand on the side of your right leg, slowly bring it towards the bottom of the golf club. Bring your right hand towards the bottom of your left hand. 4. The right hand will be placed on the golf club more in the fingers than the palm. You will simply fold the right hand around the fingers of the left.

Grip Pressure

Grip soft as the tighter the grip the more tension in the hands. Get someone to turn the club whilst you have your grip on it and they should be able to twist the club in your hands… that's the pressure you need and remenber Overlapping Grip Interlocking Grip human nature will take There are a few ways to grip, here are two over and you will never let go of the club during most popular variations, but remember comfort is the key and adjustments can be the swing but you will have relaxed hands made when hitting practice balls to master the direction and flight of the ball. leading to an easy swing and control of the club.

Keep an eye on BÁDHÚ CHUAN OILIGH

Ar an lá deire de Dheire Fómhair 1923, maidin Shatharna a bhí ann, chuaigh triúr fear as an Mullach Rua Theas amach í gcurrach le eangachí scadán a thógáil. Bhíodh na heangachí curtha amach ón oíche roimhe agus bhíodh ancaire nó cloch dá gcoinnál ar téad ansin go maidin. Bhí sé sách ciúin agus lag roimh bhreachadh an lae ach ansin phreab an ghaoth Thoir-aneas, déirí sé garbh agus ba gearr go raibh sé ina dheatach dhearg agus an fharraige tóiga. Bhí thimpeall 6 churrach amuigh í gCuan Oiligh go moch an mhaidin sin, thug na curraí eile isteach a gcuid eangachí de aon locht ach béigin do mhuintir an Mhullaidh Rua ceann dá gcuid eangachí a fhágáil ina ndiaidh agus theacht amach an darna huair ach faoin am seo bhí an fharraige agus an stoirm ina neart. Thart ar an tráth seo den mhaidin bhí fear as an gCartúr, Eamonn ó Murchú (Neidín) ag bár an bhóthair ina shuídhe ar thuas ar chairt asail ar a bheallach síos ina chladaigh le na scadáin a thógáil óna thriúr driatháracha. Thárla sé go bhfacas dhó currach amuigh í mbéal an Chuain agus é ag dul faoin uisce, choinic sé a dheireadh ag dul síos agus an gob an radharc deirneach a fuair sé air. Scaoil sé uaidh an t-asal agus bhain amach síos chuig na h-iascairí a bhí graitheach sa gcladach ag ghlannamh a gcuid eangachí bhéic sé orthú go raibh currach í ndiaidh a bháití, dhearc siad uilig thart thimpeall an chladaigh is ansin ba léir dhóibh go raibh currach an Mhullaidh Rua ar iarridh, chaith chuile fhear uaidh a raibh ar siúl aige agus dúirt le chéile nár mhór a dhuil anon agus dearcadh thart go bhfeicfidh an raibh tada ós cionn uisce. Chuaigh triúr de na h-iomróirí ba mhó le rá san áit chun farraige nó go dtáinig siad chomh fada leis an áit ar mheas siad an dream eile a bheith, nuair tháinig siad ós a gcionn bhuail uaigneas mór an triúr acu, thig siad ansin go raibh a gcuid comrádaithe cailte. Bhain dhóibh a gcuid beiréid, chuir paidir lena n-anam agus thug aighaidh arís ar an gcladach. Thug chuile fhear an baile dhó fhéin, chuaigh cuid go baile an Mhullaidh Ruaidh leis an scéal brónach a thabhairt dhá muintir. Siad an triúr báidhú an mhaidin sin ná Liam ó Raighaille (Willie Tone), fear pósta le beirt pháistí beaga faoi dhá bhliain d’aois. Micheál Bairéad (Michael Annie) fear eile pósta le cearthar pháistí óga agus Aontaine ó Rúadháin (Anthony Jamesey), ní seisean pósta. Bhí siad uilig í dtús na dtriochadí. Maidin lá Samhana cuireadh síos na báid a bhí tarraingte suas le haighaidh an Gheimhridh agus chuaigh idir báid agus curraí ag cuardach Chuan Oiligh. Do & Don’t! Baile Slachtmhar Bhéal an Mhuirthead – Belmullet Tidy Towns – has, of course, entered the annual Supervalu Tidy Towns competition. Judging will take place over the next few weeks, so please help us to keep our town looking its best! In terms of the DO & DON’T list, one particular DO is – if you have any outdoor painting to do, do it now! Don’t put it off - grab your paint and brushes and get started! On the other hand, DON’T put up bills and advertisements in the town, particularly around signposts, flowerboxes and in the middle of the roundabout! Please join us in our weekly clean-ups for the month of June – every Monday between 7.00 p.m. and 9.00 p.m. – meet at the Square. Gloves and bags will be supplied. If you want to get in touch, our Facebook site is www.facebook.com/TidyTownsBelmullet or you can email us at baileslachtmhar@gmail.com

Pretty Pier This

p h o t o g ra p h clearly shows how much of a difference the recent cleaning of Belmullet pier has made to its appearance. Indeed, it clearly depicts the “before” and “after”! Míle buíochas to Colin Naughton for carrying out this mammoth task, free of charge, for Baile Slachtmhar Bhéal an Mhuirthead (Belmullet Tidy Towns) and, indeed, for the people of the town. The pier was built in 1826, two years after the town was established, which makes it 187 years old, and looking well!

Mhuirthead has entered the Fáilte Ireland Tourism Towns Award competition this year. In order to be eligible, the town has to be one of the top 100 Tidy Towns in the country – which we proudly are! We are up against 44 other towns all over Ireland, including Westport, Mulranny and Murrisk (other Mayo towns). The Tourism Towns award aims to enhance visitor experiences of Irish towns. It is part of the annual Tidy Towns competition and it focuses on four key tourism areas: sense of place, local involvement, tourism products available, and development & promotion. We think that Béal an Mhuirthead has a great chance of succeeding in this competition. Once all the applications have been reviewed, 20 towns will be shortlisted to go on to compete for an overall prize. During July and August, there will be a series of mystery shopper experiences in these towns, which will then be shortlisted to 10 towns. The announcement of the names of these 10 towns will take place at the Tidy Towns Awards ceremony in September. Site visits will then take place, as part of the final adjudication process, in October. This means that external assessors will meet with representatives who will need to present their town and expand on their application. In November, the winner will be announced at the Fáilte Ireland Tourism Towns Award Ceremony. Representatives from all 10 finalist towns will attend this ceremony, along with representatives from: Fáilte Ireland, the Department of Tourism, and the Department of Environment. The top ten towns will each receive €1,000, with the eventual winner getting a further €10,000, along with marketing and development supports from Fáilte Ireland. Fingers crossed for all of us in Béal an Mhuirthead! Belmullet Bottom of the Litter Action League the month of April was not a good one for Belmullet. We were up against Foxford. Our town streets were littered with at least 40 pieces of paper, sweet wrappers, newspapers, plastic bottles, dog fouling, ice cream cups and glass, to name a few. Also found by the inspector was a staggering 210 cigarette butts! Crossmolina was our opponent for the month of May. Again, we lost! The streets of Belmullet were littered with at least 80 pieces of rubbish, including paper bags, wrappers, tissue paper, cans and drink bottles. In relation to ciggarette butts, no less than 140 were found! The other towns in our league are: Ballinrobe, Ballyhaunis, Charlestown, Crossmolina, Foxford, Kiltimagh and Newport. For the month of June, we are up against Ballinrobe. Come on, Belmullet, let’s keep our streets clean! Please join us in our weekly clean-ups for the month of June – every Monday between 7.00 p. m. and 9.00 p. m. – meet at the Square. Gloves and bags will be supplied.
