Keep an eye on Community Summer Workshop for Kids-
A Great Success A Summer Workshop in Computer Programming for Kids was delivered by Iorras Le Cheile from the 8th-12th July. St. Brendan’s College hosted the workshop in their fully equipped Computer Suite. The workshop was specifically designed for young people aged between 8-13 years who have an interest in I. T. and expanding their learning in coding and programming. In total 39 young people attended the workshop that was delivered by Proinsias Mac An Tuile, an experienced professional with in-depth expertise in I. T. He was assisted by Mark Harrington, who also has extensive knowledge in a range of applications and programmes relevant to programming. Rose Conway-Walsh, Co-ordinator of Iorras Le Cheile said: “This short course provided children with a basic knowledge in computer programming, app development, design, and coding. The educational and technological training allowed the children to build a foundation in ICT. The plans for a new high power Fibre Optic cable present a need for such expertise in Erris. It is our vision that these young people and others participating in the long-term programme will have the opportunity to gain the skills set required, so they can avail of local job opportunities in the coming years. ” Leanne Barrett, Project Development Worker said: “We would like to thank the young people who participated, it was a pleasure working with all of them; their interest, enthusiasm, excitement and desire to learn was wonderful to see. We were also delighted to see how caring the children were and how open and willing they all were to share their knowledge and help each other. We also owe the success of the week to the time given by our wonderful volunteers, Anne Frances Lavelle and Mary Harrington. Finally we wish to thank Michael Walsh- Principal of St. Brendan’s and the staff for their assistance. This was just the beginning of a fantastic new project in Erris and we look forward to working with you all again in the autumn. ”
Balllycroy Community Centre opened its doors to the public on the 4th of August 1983 dancing to ‘ Gloria’. Today 30 years on the centre is going strong! Fr Tuffy was PP in Ballycroy at the time and when he was approached by some members of the Community about building a hall he took up the challenge and challenge it was! The building would cost £30,000, alot of money 30 years ago. The Ballycroy people were not put off by this and with their strong community spirit that still prevails today they set about raising this huge sum of money. Mrs Phyllis Cleary (Cleary’s pub) kindly donated the land for the building. There were 8 people appointed for this project: Chris Masterson, Seamus Cafferkey, Mary Ellen Grealis R. I.P, Garda Tom Chambers R. I.P, Bobbie McAndrew, Willie Sweeney, Pat Gallagher and Marty Murray. An ANCO Youth Project helped to get the project off its feet and along with a Social Employment Scheme (FÁS Project) and the hall was complete for its opening night. After the opening night quite a lot of money came in and the committee decided to extend the building putting in a kitchen, storage, squash court and viewing gallery. Fr Tuffy moved to another parish and Fr O’Hora took up the baton. Some years later Mayo CC helped with drainage and the existing wall was built. The Centre today is the hub of the Community and is used by every group and organisation in the parish and is also home to the current Community Employment Scheme. The Community continue today to fundraise for its maintenance and up-keep. 30 years almost to the day on the 2nd of August this year our annual festival will commence in this very Community Centre. There will be two special plaques unveiled on the night and our Community Gathering Quilt. Music for the night will be provided by

Wind Energy Project for Erris A WIND-POWER company, which is in negotiations with northwest Mayo landowners to secure rights to build 400 wind turbines as part of a €5 billion renewable energy plan, is also offering the Erris community shareholdings in part of the project. Mr Maurice McCarthy, the Chief Executive Officer of Organic Power, of Skibereen, Co Cork said that the company, Mayo Atlantic Renewable Energy Export, has consulted widely with the community, and local groups, over the last four years and has a project office in Belmullet which is open to the public. “Most importantly, we have set up a subsidiary company to develop the wind element of which 10 percent of the equity is being offered to members of the community to invest in a €1,000 per share. The company is called Erris Community Wind, and we hope that as many members of the community as possible become shareholders in the company,” Mr McCarthy said. He also confirmed that the company planned to establish and fund a renewable-energy technology institute in north Mayo. Last month the company signed construction, connection and transmission agreements with the British National Grid, while it is
4
in pre-application consultation with An Bord Pleanála. Proposals for the project include a hilltop reservoir for the storage of excess wind energy and a transmission system capable of selling renewable capacity to Britain. Seawater would be pumped up to the reservoir with surplus wind energy released at other times to generate electricity. The company also hopes to attract European renewable-energy manufacturers to the area to build turbine blades and towers, thus encouraging local support and possibly creating up to 2,000 jobs. Harnessing the potential of both wind and wave energy along Mayo’s coastline has been recognised by many private companies, and some years ago the State’s ocean energy testsite was developed off Belmullet. Indeed, a Marine Institute study has identified that Mayo has the highest available wind resource in Britain and Ireland and the best wave-energy potential on the Atlantic seaboard. Maurice McCarthy said the project would allow export of six terawatt hours of clean power to Britain, providing about 1.5 per cent of Britain’s electricity need for 2017-18.

Keep an eye on The Gathering Travenol's Past Employees Reunion in Belmullet As part of
the Gathering 2013 a reunion for all those who worked in Travenol between July 1974 and November 1981 is taking place on Saturday 10th of August. We hope to reunite as many of our past work colleagues as possible for this special gathering. A small voluntary committee was formed in early 2013 to explore the concept and to help organise this event. Some initial local publicity was done and the interest from former employees was overwhelming. We knew then that we had to go ahead with the idea and that our former colleagues would support the initiative. Travenol set up assembly operations in Belmullet on 15th July 1974 in MBD House located in the town centre. As a result of growth and success, in 1977 operations were moved to a specially designed building situated in the local Industrial Estate, supported by by Údarás na Gaeltachta. At its peak, Travenol employed close on 300 people (the majority female) and in total over 350 people benefited from employment provided by Travenol at some stage. Operations ceased in late 1981 after seven years of activity on a three shift basis. During the late "70's, Travenol was the financial lifeblood for many families in the Erris area, the wages provided were above what others locally offered. The conditions were excellent and employees respected this, for example, absenteeism rates were significantly lower than the national average. During this period quite a few couples emerged from within the employees at the site. Many employees got married, settled down and built homes in the area. Over the Christmas period of 1978, no fewer than eight engagements of employees occurred. In the summer of 1979, on average two weddings a week took place. In total, twenty nine employees at the site got married that summer. Belmullet was booming, all thanks to Travenol! Travenol’s decision in 1980, to move its production from Belmullet was a devastating blow for the local economy and the entire Erris area. The Erris area is equivalent to the size of Co Louth. To the employees and their families it was an unthinkable disaster. They had come to rely on the stability of the income from their employment and the future was now a very dark cloud facing each and every one of them. Their lives were to be totally changed forever. Many had to emigrate to either the UK or USA to find employment as there were few realistic opportunities available locally. Nonetheless, all who worked there appreciated the financial impact it made in their lives for that relatively short seven year period. It had given many a good start in their working lives. Quickly a community was split apart and the return of emigration was once again a major issue for the Erris region. After almost 40 years from the opening of Travenol in Belmullet we thought that ‘The Gathering’ initiative offered us a wonderful opportunity to reunite old colleagues and friends once again. An invitation is extended to all former employees and their partners to come join us for a trip down memory lane and renew old friendships. A great night of nostalgia is in store; some old photographs may well appear on the night, so be prepared! We hope to once again rekindle the spirit of the late 1970's in the good old days of Travenol. No need to pre-book, just turn up on the night! * Finger food will be served and dance the night away to music by The Duets. *A cover charge of approximately €10 will apply.

Siúl Liom Féin Tráthnóna inné agus mé ag spaisteoireacht
thart timpeall an cheantair chuaigh mé anonn go Macaire Rabhairte, áit a dtéim go minic. Ba ghnách liom siúl ar an trá ach tráthnóna inné d'aithrigh mé é sin. Shiúl mé isteach i lár na ndumhcha. Seo uair amháin a bhí an ceart agam. Is deas siúl ar an trá féin ach tráthnóna inné, an chéad rud a chonaic mé agus mé go fóill istigh sa ghluaisteán, ná péire lachan thíos fúm ar an fheamainn ag ithe --- péire seil-lachan. Sin lacha chomh dóighiúil le lacha ar bith eile ar domhan. D'fhan mé píosa ansin ag amharc orthu. Nuair a d'éirigh siad san aer tháinig mé amach as an ghluaisteán. Bhí an tráthnóna chomh deas is a thiocfadh leis bheith. Gaoth fhionnuar agus spéir ghlan ann. Ní raibh duine ar bith le feiceáil ar an trá. Ansin ar an bhomaite shocraigh mé siúl isteach i lár na ndumhcha in áit na trá. Thosaigh mé agus ní raibh mé i bhfad istigh nuair a bhí fhios agam gur cheart an cinneadh a rinne mé. An radharc a bhí romham ní fheicfeá ait ar bith eile é. Na dathanna a bhí ann, corcra, dearg, bándearg, bán, buí, glas, donn agus gach dath eile atá ar an domhan. Ní fhaca mise rud ar bith cosúil leis ariamh i mo shaol féin. Cúpla lá roimhe sin bhí mé ag caint le m'uncail agus ag gearán nár chuala mé an fhuiseóg ag canadh leis na blianta. Bhuel, ní chreidfeá ach ní amháin gur chuala mé ach chonaic mé é ag éirí suas sa spéir, ag ardú is ag ardú go dtí nách raibh sé le feiceáil ach é ag canadh an t-am ar fad. Ansin ar an bhomaite thit sé as an spéir chomh gasta le cloch. Ag siúl ar aghaidh liom ansin chonaic mé bumbóg ag crinniú pailine ón seamar agus na bláthanna eile a bhí chomh fairsing amuigh ansin sa chaorán. Páirc amháin agus í clúdaithe le nóiníní, é bán ar fad le dath corcra measctha isteach ann. Bhí seilidí ann cuid acu le blaoscanna orthu. Fáinleóga ar lorg na míoltóga, an bhumbóg ag obair leis an t-am ar fad. Ní raibh mé buartha mar shiúl mé mé isteach i lár na ndumhcha in áit mo ghnáth-shiúl ar an trá. Sílim go racaidh mé an bealach sin arís le cuidiú Dé. Thaitin sé chomh mór sin liom. Táim cinnte go bhfuil i bhfad níos mó rudaí le feiceáil agus le cluinstin chomh maith. Mar a deireann siad, tá sé in am dúinn stopadh agus na bláthanna a bholadh. Déan é uair éigin agus bainfidh tú sult as, táim cinnte de sin. < Le Tomás (Sóisear) Mac Cionnaigh.

Keep an eye on Community Tír na dTraonach On Thursday, July 11, Samuel Birch (Corncrake Conservation Officer), in association with Belmullet Tidy Towns, guided a group of more than 40 to the Mullet peninsula in an endeavour to hear the call of the corncrake. The listeners – who had travelled from far and wide especially for this unique occasion – were enthralled to hear the amazing “crex-crex” sound coming from the fields, thanks to the well-informed farmers who know not to interfere with the birds’ habitats, and to Birdwatch Ireland for their work in the area. Special thanks to Samuel Birch and to Sinéad Gaughan for organising this amazing experience. Keep an eye out for more possible tours in the Mullet – Corncrake Country. Fáilte go dtí Tír na dTraonach!

Keep an eye on Community Croí Weight Management Programme for Men coming to Erris As a result of our recent Men’s Health Awareness Day for men, we are delighted to announce that Croí , the West of Ireland Cardiac Foundation, will be bringing their six week Weight Management Programme for Men to Erris this September. Here’s what they say: “Do you want to learn how to manage your weight without being on a diet’? The secret to successful weight management doesn’t lie in ‘fad ‘or ‘extreme diets’ which rarely have any scientific basis. A healthy weight can be achieved by literally making small changes in your lifestyle. For expert guidance, our Croí Nutritionist will facilitate a 6 week group session (1 hour per week) where you will discover the key to healthy weight management. An initiative by Croí, the West of Ireland Cardiac Foundation in association with the ‘Mayo Action On Heart Disease & Stroke’ programme.” The programme will be delivered by Áine Waldron, the dedicated Croí Nutritionist and will: Help you explore your relationship with food Teach you how to make healthy choices when shopping Help you to understand food labels Assist you in controlling portion sizes During this 6 week programme you will keep a food diary and will have the option of participating in a weekly ‘weigh-in’. The Programme in Erris will begin on Thursday 19th September at 7.00pm in Áras Inis Gluaire. As an added extra, the men will have the option to attend two basic cooking classes at the end of the 6 weeks. There are limited places available so don’t delay! For further information & to book your place, contact Lorraine on 097 81079. (This project is being organised locally by The Men’s Community Initiative, The Men on the Move and the HOPE project).
