Keep an eye on Community Fáilte Issue 17 What is it about this time of year? Holiday season, good weather (sometimes), a nice atmosphere and vibes in the air. Lúnasa. August is traditionally festival month, a time to bless the fruits of the harvest. Over the course of the last couple of weeks if you were out and about in Erris, you would have met people you haven’t seen in a long time. It’s great to bump into an old friend oracquaintance and have a catch up if only for a few minutes. Facebook is fine and well but nothing beats standing in the street/pub and having a chat. It’s good to talk and we are good at that! Heritage Edition Still We hope you enjoyed the holidays and all the available From T&T gathering events and festivals that happened in Clothing, Belmullet Erris. We would love to hear about how it went and if you have pics – share them with us. A special thanks fo Rosemarie Mangan who has been supplying us with fantastic photos and information on Tidy Towns and events in Erris. With Mayo Mania looming as the 25th approaches we have a big day to look forward to when our lads meet Tyrone in the All-Ireland semi-final. To celebrate this we would like to offer a free Mayo t-shirt from T&T Clothing for the best photo of red and green. If you have a good snap simply e-mail it to info@erriseye.com, message to Facebook or drop in to T&T Clothing,

Áras Inis Gluaire Men’s Community Initiative: Back

by popular demand this September will be our men’s ‘Art in the Afternoon’ sessions which are two hours on Monday afternoons where you can come along and paint in a relaxed environment with others who share the same interest. Enjoy the chat and the cup of tea while you are here! New participants are always welcome to join in so if you are interested, give us a call. We are also inviting all men over 55 who would like to learn basic computer skills, to get in touch. If we have sufficient interest, we will run our Beginner’s Computer Class again for the winter months. This will be our third course and it has proved very popular in the previous years for those who have never used a computer before & would like to make a start. With nearly everything nowadays being ‘online’, it’s handy to know the basics. Not forgetting the health side of things, our Croí Weight Management Programme begins on 19th September and places are filling up fast so don’t delay, book your place today! This will be a 6 week programme where you will receive expert advice from the Croí Nutritionist. Following this there will be two basic cooking classes where you will be introduced to some simple, healthy, wholesome meals. ‘Men on the Move’ will also be recharging their batteries over the summer so why not join them in September and start walking? Great way to get out & about, feel fitter & increase your energy levels. Want to take up a new hobby when the evenings start to close in... Why not try Indoor Bowls at the Sports Complex? No experience necessary just go along and give it a go! Group will start to meet again in September, evening and time to be confirmed. We are currently looking at further events and activities for next season, so if you have any ideas, do contact us! Erris Care & Repair Service: This worthwhile service has got off to a great start across Erris! Many of you have had those little odd jobs completed by our volunteers and due to the glorious weather we have been blessed with, gardens have been top of everybody’s list. If you have requested a job, we haven’t forgotten about you & are getting through the jobs as fast as we can! Don’t forget, we operate all year round, so when the sun has left our shores and we head back indoors, our volunteers are still on hand for those little indoor jobs you may need help with. Curtains to hang? Shelves to put up? Need to give something a fresh lick of paint? Give us a call and we will be glad to help. The only requirement is that you are over 60 and living in Erris. As partners of Age Action Ireland, we aim to promote positive ageing and provide better services for older people. Erris is only the second area in Mayo, after Claremorris, to deliver this service. Ballina have now followed suit and have just set up their Care & Repair Service a few weeks ago. We are always looking for new volunteers so if you can spare an hour or two a week to help out an older person, please do get in touch. All volunteers are Garda Vetted and must agree to work within the guidelines set out by Age Action Ireland. For further information on any of the above, please contact Lorraine, the Community Officer at Áras Inis Gluaire on 097 81079.

Who Do You Think You Are? That is the question we are all asking ourselves now days since the rise in popularity of the hit TV show. Do you ask yourself this question and don't know where to start searching for the answers? The answer is simple; one call to Gaol Siar can start the journey into your family Gaol Siar translates from Gaelic into English as past relations or relating back. Gaol Siar is owned and managed by Barbara Heneghan from Blacksod. Gaol Siar is a newly established company operating in Erris specialising in Genealogy, ancestry research and family history research. We can trace your relations all over the world and combine the results into a family tree chart ready framing. When the research has been compiled we can present your family’s history in a video which combines your family story with national and local history of the time. A family history video has proven to be a popular gift to send to family all over the world, if videos are not for you why not have the family history compiled into a family history book, which saves the family story for posterity. Gaol Siar also specialises in organising family reunions, we can plan, invite and organise your family reunion which combine the family, the history and the culture into a fun weekend. Gaol Siar's next reunion is the Blacksod reunion from 6-9 September 2013 which is promised to be an exciting weekend with the reunion being launched by Tom McClean, the first person to row across the Atlantic. If you would like to avail of any of these services, please contact Barbara on 0872169625 or eolas@gaolsiar.com or see www.gaolsiar.com

Erris Eye Welcomes LĂşnasa to Belmullet, visit LĂşnasa on Church Road Belmullet.

The Well-Travelled Mayo Flag! In 2008 students from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th classes in Glencastle National School signed a Mayo flag made by their teacher Miss Ruddy. The flag was then taken into space! Ron Garan, astronaut, who has links to the Erris area, took the flag with him into space as one of his 3 personal items that he was allowed to take on the journey. Afterwards he visited the school and presented a certificate which confirms the Mayo flag travelled 5.5 million miles. This was certified by NASA. The flag and certificate hang proudly in Glencastle National School. Thanks to Collette Corless.

Throw over the garlic and drizzle over half the olive oil. Roast for 25-30 minutes in a fairly hot oven (190C/375F/ Gas 5) until soft and pulpy. Sieve to remove the skin and pips. Heat the remaining oil in a pan and sweat the onion for a few minutes until soft. Add the beetroot and the stock and bring to the boil. Season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Simmer gently for 7-10 minutes until the beetroot is tender. Stir in the tomato purée,

transfer the soup to a blender and process until completely smooth. Season to taste. Optional: Garnish with a tsp of reduced fat creme fraiche and some string beans.

Keep an eye on The Gathering Tóstal Triumph for Erris

Several triumphant Tóstal Iorras events took place in the Barony of Erris over the past week – some of which have already attracted national and international attention. There were excursions to the Inishkea Islands on July 20. The amazing Agricultural Show took place on Sunday, July 21, and Áras Inis Gluaire hosted an Irish house party on July 22. The opening of the new Kilmore nine holes took place at Carne Golf Links on July 23, and last, but by no means least, there was a poignant commemoration of the Assisted Emigration of 1883 and 1884 in Blacksod on July 24. All of the Erris gatherings drew hundreds of people – individuals and families, young and old – to celebrate and to enjoy all that the area has to offer: activities, sports, history, music, heritage, arts and culture, to name a few. The opening of the new nine holes at Carne Golf Links drew a number of international journalists and writers, as well as various tourism representatives from around the country. The links course received acclaim amongst the golf journalists, and Erris was highly praised by tourism groups – indicating that the area has a lot to offer and that there is a positive future for tourism in Erris. The inimitable Ian Mac Aindriú introduced nine guests who all spoke highly of the course and of the area: Michael Ring TD, Minister of State for Tourism & Sport; Cllr Johnny O’Malley, Cathaoirleach of Mayo Co. Co. ; Peter Hynes, Manager of Mayo Co. Co. ; Eva Dearie, Fáilte Ireland; Ally McIntosh, golf course architect and writer; Gerry McGuire, Chairman of Erris Tourism; John Garrity, sports writer from the USA; John McLaughlin, North & West Coast Links Ireland; and Chris Tallott, Captain of Belmullet Golf Club. The final event of Tóstal Iorras 2013 was the commemoration of James Hack Tuke’s assisted emigration scheme – when thousands of people emigrated from Erris. Special guests included: Atlantic Rhythm, the Achill Island Pipe Band, craft makers from the area, and Dr. Gerard Moran of the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. Rosemarie Geraghty, a researcher in Ionad Deirbhile Heritage Centre, Eachléim, has spent over five years transcribing and collecting information about Tuke’s scheme, to the extent that they now have copies of the original ships’ manifests for all 15 ships that left Blacksod Bay. Dr. Gerard Moran launched a new online database which hosts a wealth of information relating to the passengers - where they came from, who they travelled with, where they went to etc. The committee of Ionad Deirbhile marked the occasion with a walk, tracing the route that the emigrants from Achill, Newport, Belmullet and Erris regions would have taken to Blacksod. There was also an emotional re-enactment of a family leaving their home, heading for the ship, which led the audience to the unveiling of a new memorial garden in Blacksod, in memory of all those who sailed for the New World in 1883 and 1884. The garden is just a stone’s throw away from the historic Blacksod Lighthouse, overlooking Achill Island and the Atlantic Ocean. It was an idyllic location in which to conclude Tóstal Iorras 2013, promising hope and confidence for the future of the area - a stark contrast to the events of 1883 and 1884.

Keep an eye on Community The Dear Little Glen

By Patrick Joseph Lennon, Glencastle. Oh! Sweet little vale how sad is my tale This poetic wail from my heart among men My cheeks now are pale for they cannot inhale The sweet balmy gale of my own little Glen. The old fiddle dear Was still willing to cheer The kind neighbours ear Who so often called in As a youth ,happy l be When as friends we would play On Dómhnaills sweet brae in my own little Glen. I see not the bough nor heather bells now Nor kind milking cow when I strolled from my pen the woodbine so sweet nor dew at my feet Will never me greet in my own little Glen. This old Chapel grey where I often did pray And sorrowful stay to be cleansed from each sin The little mounds near bedewed with each tear. For departed ones dear From the sad little Glen.

Bryan Deane, St. Brendan's College, Belmullet who achieved an outstanding 6 A Grades in his Leaving Certificate Examination pictured with Mr. Walshe and Mr. Treacy.

As your tears silent roll your hearts are full of dole It touches my soul to think of you then What would I not give once more there to live In my own little, Dear little, fond little Glen. I left Conroy’s field, So fruitful in yield With its shelter and shield And its hedges of whin The flocks there I drove And the heath bloomed above To each all adieu

And adieu

My own little Glen. M.J. Nallen

You Can’t Park Here I've been courting Bridie now for nearly 15 years, When she asked me to marry her I broke down in tears. To prove how much I loved her and to do the decent thing, We drove up to Dublin to buy the auld wedding ring.

First of all the toll bridge was highway robbery, I'm glad we brought the flask with us we saved it on the tea. And when we reached the jewelers, I parked outside the door. Then from out of nowhere I hear this deafening roar. Hay, ye can't park here, ye can't park there. That's all I heard him say, I'm going to have to clamp you and you'll get towed away. I was looking for a car park but didn't have much luck He said that was a lame excuse and he couldn't give a ‘'''. Heading down O'Connell Street in the middle of the day, A Garda pulled me over and said it was one-way. I pulled up on the footpath on the double yellow line. He opened up his note book and asked me was I blind.

After eight hours shopping well it began to rain, As I drove 'round by Stephen's Green I nearly hit a train. Sure me heart was palpating and me nerves were shot to bits. I stopped outside McDonalds to get a bag of chips. Hay, ye can't park here, ye can't park there. That's all I heard him say, I'm going to have to clamp you and you'll get towed away. I was looking for a car park but didn't have much luck He said that was a lame excuse and he couldn't give a ‘'''. Heading for Belmullet and the city far behind, Bridie got the auld wedding ring and I got a parking fine, When I told me story to the lads in McDonnells Bar. They told be I should get a bike and sell that .,,car. Hay, ye can't park here, ye can't park there. That's all I heard him say, I'm going to have to clamp you and you'll get towed away.
