Welcome to winter 2013! We've had such a long and mild autumn this year so we can't complain. As we embrace the winter months ahead remember to get out and about whenever you can. It's good to be busy so keep an eye out for things going on in Erris. We will publish any community events free of charge. Issue 22 has items like tips for budgeting for Christmas, news from Belmullet Tidy Towns, computer classes with Iorras Le Chéile and much more from around the Barony. – Community Services The Men’s Community Initiative are currently rolling out their autumn activities. ‘Art in the Afternoon’ has resumed on Mondays from 2pm to 4pm. An opportunity for men over 55 to come along and paint or draw in a relaxed environment with others who share their interest. The Croí Weight Management Programme is continuing every Thursday from 7pm to 8pm. The Men on the Move are also back in action and will meet every Monday evening with Michelle! Our Basic Computer Classes will begin in the coming weeks. If you want to know how to find your way around the internet, send emails and use online services, then why not sign up and give it a go? For information on any of the above or to book a place, please contact Lorraine on 097 81079. The Erris Care & Repair Service The Erris Care & Repair Service operates all year round. As the clocks go back and the evenings draw in earlier, are there any odd jobs that need doing around the house or garden? Time to make sure your light bulbs are all working inside and out. What about hanging those curtains you have been meaning to get round to but you just can’t manage it yourself? Locks or hinges need fixing, shelves to put up? Whatever your little job, our volunteers will be happy to help. Perhaps you would just like some company as the long winter days stretch out before us? Or someone to pop in for a cup of tea & a chat now and then? So, if you are over 60 or know somebody who is, that needs a helping hand, please do call us. Keep an eye on The Johnny Garvin Band
Johnny Garvin is 22 years of age from Glenamoy in North County Mayo and is Ireland's newest Country Singer. Having always had a passion for country music and growing up with a large family steeped in Irish Country Music Johnny became known on a local level performing in pubs and local dance halls throughout the west of Ireland. On a trip to Donegal Johnny's dream of getting established further into the Country Music Industry was to become a reality when he was introduced to Brian Cunningham, Jim Corbett and Paul Johnson. Under the watchful hands of the team at Bounce Studios, Johnny commenced recording for his new album. His debut single 'In God's Care' was given to him by Country Music Legend Margo O Donnell and Joe Mc Shane to record and in August, Johnny released his debut single and received huge airplay on local, national and international stations. Johnny has now released his new 3 track EP featuring an original song by Jim Corbett and Paul Johnson entitled 'Loosing Feeling'. He also features two other tracks namely 'My Darling Kathleen' a song written by the talented Michael S. Togher from Co. Mayo and Lorrie Morgan's Except for Monday's. Johnny is delighted to announce that he will be launching his new seven piece dance band the Johnny Garvin Band in his native Mayo on Saturday 9th of November at Healy's Hall In Glenamoy. feel stressed an art therapy can be the perfect approach for you in decreasing the level of your stress. Art therapy can help you express the inexpressible or access thoughts and feelings that might be hard to articulate. The expressive use of art gives a way for communication beyond verbal or to enhance understanding of what is expressed or said.
Draw the Line
In everyday life, art therapy has nothing to do with creating a masterpiece and everything to do with taking a mental holiday from stressful thoughts. The great thing is simply picking up a pencil and drawing counts, because it puts you naturally into the present time. It has no difference whether you doodle in a proper book or on your newspaper’s margins. While being in the train and commuting to work let your imagination work.

"NORTH WEST SPCA Erris Branch.
Last april we were delighted to have a vet come to Belmullet every Monday and Thursday between the hours of 11.30 am and 2.30 pm. He has set up within the pet shop on American Street. Unfortunately, the pet shop closed down and moved on a few weeks ago, but Conal Finnerty of Skeldale veterinary clinic is still there, and you can reach him on 087 918 5350. He is a welcome service to the Erris area, and we, the Erris branch of North West SPCA use his services on a weekly basis. Skeldale also supply doses, and other medical products for cattle and sheep at very competitive prices. If you need help or advice with your pets, dogs cats or any animal, just give Conal a ring. Our aim is to rescue stray dogs and cats and unwanted pets, and we will do our best to help anyone who needs it. All enquiries can be made to 085 166 7171. We will return callls as soon as possible. Spaying and neutering is the best way to try and solve the problem of so many strays. Remember if we can help we will, but we must be told, and we emphasise, we are just volunteers. We don't get wages or expenses, and most of us are only able to help outside of our working hours. We are always on the lookout for anyone willing to volunteer and donations would be greatly appreciated, as the money goes to help local animals and pay the vets bill.

Go with the flow
When I become fully absorbed in bits of glass and tile to create a mosaic, I am experiencing what art experts call flow, a near meditative state, which produces many of the same benefits as traditional meditation like feeling less stressed. To find your flow, it is suggested starting with an art form, which involves no rules, software programs or mechanical equipment. That is why I chose mosaics. These cracked pieces of glass are joyful to work with and I do not fear such thing as a mistake. Similarly, you can begin by creating a clay pinch pot and easing yourself into the potter’s wheel, or sinking yourself into smudgy, dreamy oil pastel stuff before moving on to still life oil paintings.

Colour yourself happy
Children have the natural inclination to be so engaged in the creative process without any cares about the finished product. Most adults flip their focus to the end result and unless they have worked on an award winning chef-d’oeuvre, all creative joy vanishes. The next time you bring home a new box of crayons, pull up a chair and color with your kids. Follow their lead. And when they hang their pictures on the fridge door, go ahead and hang yours, too.

If you are drawn to crafts, creating functional handmade items fits very nicely into the definition of art therapy. To most people it is a third feminism thing, with women taking back crafts that is given up because females do not want See the point to be the homemaker knitting or embroidering or sewing. Computer Training for Jobseekers Iorras Le Cheile will deliver a training programme for jobseekers starting Thursday 7th November. The course is designed for people who are looking to increase their employment opportunities and job application skills. Participants will gain practical skills and information such as CV advice, interview preparation and basic I.T skills in Microsoft Office, job searching online and more. Participants will also work towards completing modules relevant to a FETAC Certificate from the National Adult learning Network. The course will run for 5 weeks, with 3 hour sessions each week. Computer Training for Women over 55 Iorras Le Cheile will deliver a training programme for older women starting Thursday 7th November. The training is for women who are aged 55 and over and who have little or no computer skills. Keep an eye on Community St Brendan's College Technology students get top awards Congratulations to Patrick Eschway, Oisin Mc Grath and Ryan Gallagher whose Leaving Cert Technology Higher level projects won a remarkable first, second and third in the Mayo/Galway Engineering and Technology Teachers' Association competition. Patrick and Oisin's projects will now be judged in the National Finals on November 16th in Monaghan.
Erris Community Connections a great morning out! Have you ever wondered what new hobby or interest you could take up? Well the people of Erris had that opportunity to find out all at the Erris Community Connections morning where people gathered to find out what was available to do in Erris. Over 40 stands showcasing all the various things to be done in Erris. There were craft groups, sailing, Golf, Bridge, Men on the Move, Men’s Shed, Men’s community Initiative. Courses from VEC and Mayo North East, Unislim, voluntary work and of course the Erris Eye magazine. People were interested to find out what they could get involved in in the sport area with walking running for men and women, bowls and archery. Many thanks to all involved in organising the day and to our funders Mayo North East, Mayo County Development Board and Erris Community Health Forum.

TEAM HOPE CHRISTMAS SHOEBOX APPEAL
It is time once again for the Christmas shoebox appeal. For those who have never heard of it and would like to know. It is an opportunity to give a present for Christmas, in the way of a little shoebox full of gifts, to a child in another country. Children who are living on the margins of society, victims of war, disease or poverty, in some of the worlds most underdeveloped countries. For families living on less than €1 a day. Christmas is just like any other day, with not much hope for tomorrow. When you send a Team Hope Christmas Shoebox, you bring a little hope, some of Gods love and a lot of joy, smiles and laughter. It wont change everything, but it will do far more than we could ever imagine, by sharing Christmas with children who have never experienced anything like it before! If the local leader requests it, after the children receive their shoeboxes, Team Hope also gives a Christmas card explaining where their box has come from, they tell them about Ireland and the significance of the Christmas message (this can be read on the Team Hope website). For those who would like to take part, get a shoe box and wrap it in Christmas paper (wrap the lid separately). Choose whether youd like a boy or a girl to receive your box and what age. There are 3 age groups 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14years old. 10-14 boys boxes are always in short supply. Fill your box with gifts. You can enclose items like pens, pencils copybooks, colouring pencils and colouring books, erasers and sharpeners. Hygiene items - toothbrush and paste, soap, facecloth, hair brush or comb. Small clothing items like a hat, scarf, gloves, socks, underwear, or a t shirt A treat - toys, sunglasses, a game, small Irish gift, a photo of yourself, sweets (must be in date boiled sweets are best as chocolate may melt if it is going to a hot country), small musical instrument, a doll or cuddly toy, a car, skipping rope, or yo-yo. Please do not include any liquids as they can spill, anything breakable, scary things like haloween stuff, war related items (many of those children may be displaced due to war), books with words. To enable your box to be delivered, please enclose €4 for each box, put it into the enclosed envelope which is part of the shoe box leaflet. Place the envelope on top of the gifts in the box. Close your box with an elastic band, please do not seal it with tape, as it will be checked before it is sent. Finally stick the boy/girl sticker to the top of your box remembering to mark the appropriate age group, (the sticker is part of the leaflet). Keep an eye on Community Early in the morning of October 31st 1923 a tragic fishing accident happened

in the mouth of Elly Bay when three local men fishing for herring lost their lives. The three men who lost their lives were Willie Reilly (Tone), Michael Barrett (Annie) and Anthony Ruane (Jamesie) they were all from the village of Mullaghroe South. The 90th anniversary of the Elly Bay Drowning is nearly upon us and we are remembering the tragic event with a get together here at Turas Siar at 8pm on Thursday 31st October. Anyone who has any connection to the men who were drowned or any other one who is interested will also be welcome. Please come along for an evening of remembrance and chat. There are newspaper clippings of the tragedy; photos etc and the story of the tragic event will be re-told. All this will be on display on the night. Refreshments will be served. Comhghairdeas to Belmullet Junior National School Belmullet Junior National School were awarded their third Green Flag on Thursday, October 24 – congratulations! One of the key success factors of Ireland’s Green Schools programme is that it is themed. Schools applying for their first Green Flag must complete seven steps in relation to the theme ‘Litter & Waste’. If they succeed, they are awarded their Green Flag and then they can move on to completing the seven steps in relation to the second theme, which is ‘Energy’, and so on. The subsequent themes are: water, travel, biodiversity, and global citizenship – litter & waste. The use of themes helps to prevent schools from trying to deal with every aspect of their environment at once, which could be overwhelming. Furthermore, it allows schools to build on their experience, expertise and best practice, as they work from theme to theme. When you have children it really isn't an option (even if you wanted to) to cancel Christmas. But how can you ensure your children have a lovely time stuffed with happy memories, without you, their parents, starting the new year in debt and despair? Here are some seasonal suggestions for cutting costs without anyone noticing. 1. Make a list. Don't buy on impulse or just for the sake of it. Those last minute presents are the ones that push your finances into crisis. Leave your credit card at home and take out a specific amount of cash - then stop. 2. Make a 'no presents pact' with family and friends. Father Christmas will, of course, come to the little ones, but us adults can probably do without jolly reindeer jumpers and the latest Nigella cookbook. If you think it's really sad not to exchange presents, set a price limit, agree a Secret Santa so each person had to buy just one bigger present for a specific person, or insist on something homemade. 3. Don't get hung-up about December 25th. It really is OK to promise to buy your teenage daughter a new coat for Christmas, but to suggest you look together in the sales most of which start on the 26th anyway. If you want her to have something to open on the day, write your promise down on a card and sign it. 4. Decide this will be the year not to send Christmas cards. You'll be seeing or phoning your close friends and family. If you really do want to continue the tradition of sending Christmas cards, think about cutting costs by making homemade, hand delivering and check out the An Post website for the last date to send cards. 5. Be brave with the Christmas menu - and all the extras. Turkey prices are ridiculously high and cost a lot to cook. What about another cheaper but even more delicious roast? 6. Don't overbuy food. You really don't need to have cupboards bulging with chocolates and biscuits and fridges jammed high with cheeses. You're shopping for one day, not a siege. Shops will be open again on St Stephens Day 7. If you're determined to have turkey, clear space in your freezer so that you can squirrel away leftovers before you get sick of the sight of them. Bulk cook and freeze and menu plan minutely if you are having family to stay. Try and give yourself a meal budget and stick to it. 8. Food shop with a list. Check your cupboards for ingredients before you start, so you don't end up doubling up. 9. If you're having a large family Christmas, share out the cost by asking everyone to bring something on the day. (Be very specific about what you need, though everyone's so full of the Christmas spirit that you could end up with enough food to feed an army.) 10. Club together with friends and family, and bulk-buy at local shops who would be glad of the business. 10. Remember that very small children have more fun opening presents than playing with what's inside. Even a small and inexpensive present should be packed in a large cardboard box. 11. Remember, too, that Father Christmas often puts very cheap but extraordinarily useful gifts - like new toothbrushes and pencil sharpeners - in Christmas stockings. Offers on smellies are also brilliant for stockings and teen presents. 12. Get organised for next year - the best time to start shopping for Christmas is St Stephens Day. OK - so forward-planning isn't going to help with cutting the cost of Christmas this year. But it's unlikely that any of us are going to feel any more flush in 12 months' time....

Keepananeye eye on Keep onCommunity Traditions Blacksod Gathering, Connecting people and Place.....In 1905 when J.M
Synge visited Erris he described it as follows: “noisy, squalid, lonely and crowded at the same time, and without any appeal to the imagination”. Thankfully in 2013 the year of “The Gathering” Blacksod proved to Mr. Synge that we have come a long way since 1905. The Blacksod gathering held from the 6-9 September 2013 was testament to that. An enjoyable weekend with at least 230 people attending cultural celebrations. A total of 36 bed nights were filled using local accommodation providers. The services of sixteen Erris suppliers were availed of for the duration. The weekend began with an exciting presentation from Tom McClean, the first person to row single handed across the Atlantic. He arrived in Blacksod in 1969. Musical entertainment was provided by Tony Cawley. On Saturday we enjoyed a guided tour of Blacksod Lighthouse guided by Vincent Sweeney. This was followed by an afternoon in the heritage centre, where visitors enjoyed a heritage trail video created by Gaol Siar and Fluich Films portraying the history of Blacksod and its environs. There was also a talk given John Cuffe who brought us right back to 1960’s. Mike Bulfin, the sculptor who created Deirbhile’s Twist sculpture on Fálmore Road explained to the people what the sculpture meant. We learned that being a scientist and artist he was fascinated by ancient settlements and he reflected their existence on the landscape but did not imitate them. He chooses the theme of the sun circle but did not copy it directly. He reminded us of our Celtic ancestors who roamed these lands before us. We also heard from Mr. Muldooney, the last Sergeant to retire from Blacksod in the 1970’s. We enjoyed tales from lighthouse keepers from around the coast.
On Saturday evening the guests assembled at the Broadhaven Bay hotel where they enjoyed a Gaol Siar documentary “Beyond the Sea” capturing the details of 26 Lighthouse keepers who have Blacksod connections. Guests also enjoyed a digital photographic display of over 300 black and white photos of those who lived in Blacksod past and present. Gaol Siar intends to publish these photographs in a book to mark the occasion. Publishing would be subject to funding and permission from the owners of the images. There was also a display of images such as fishing excursions, the first helicopter relief, and arrival of Tom McClean, the changing of the Blacksod Bouy, and a land league rally in Binghamstown in 1910. There were extracts from journals and letters written by guests who visited Blacksod in the early 1900’s and stayed in the Dudley Arms Hotel. After dinner entertainment was provided by Eddie Maguire a former resident of Blacksod, reciting some of his own poetry which depicted local characters from the past. Eddie gave a wonderful rendition of an old lament called “Leora Deora”. Visitors were also entertained by a group of Drogheda musicians led by Mr. Paddy Murphy one of the band members, married to Agneta Kane, Blacksod. On Sunday we enjoyed a walk through Blacksod village and heard tales from local people about turf cutting on the hill. We also visited the Druids Temple, the Powder House and Gob a Leacht and enjoyed tea and sandwiches in Teach Una. Musical entertainment was provided by Tony Cawley, Drogheda musicians and PJ Hennigan. On Monday we enjoyed a boat trip to Inis Gé, accompanied by the Irish Lights photographer John Eagle, who later photographed the trip. John Eagle’s book and post cards, Gerry Butler’s book the “Light Keeper” and a novel by Blacksod native Una Trant, “Flotsom Girl”
a fictional account of a girl growing up in Erris in the 1930 & 1940’s are all on sale, through Gaol Siar. Many people spoke of how enjoyable the entire weekend was. One testimonial from an Irish Lights staff member is “I’ve never been on a weekend where I met so many people, learned and seen so much”. Other Irish Lights staff spoke of how they had no connection to the area as they worked in head office in Dun Laoghaire and dealt with Blacksod on paper only, however after the Blacksod reunion they feel a strong bond with the place and will return for holidays. Emigrants travelled from Scotland, Manchester, London and the USA as well as people from all over Ireland. The Blacksod people gave wonderful support to the event by submitting stories, photos and contacting family and friends to join us. They helped to conduct tours and talks as well as attending events. George and Peggy Toms donated a copy of a painting by Peggy’s brother, John McNeely. The watercolour of Blacksod was painted in 1985 and maybe seen on the Blacksod brochure as well as on Blacksod key rings. The Belmullet Unislim class is delighted to have 2 members from our class through to the final of Unislimmer of the year competition! Rachel McBride, who was featured on the latest Unislim magazine and also on Xpose on TV3 has lost 4st1lb. Our second entrant is male. Kieran Munnelly has lost 4st 8lb. It's fantastic to have a male member in the final as it shows other men that Unislim is not just for women! Last year we had fantastic win with our entrant, Bernie McHugh winning the title, which was the first time it was won in the west in 40years! Best of luck to both kieran and Rachel. Whatever the outcome they are winners already anyway as they have changed their lives!
Are you missing the Children of Lir mural that was once on Quay Street in Belmullet? Instead of doing repainting the mural there again, Belmullet Tidy Towns has had plans to do it elsewhere in the town - possibly at the side of the handball alley, at the children’s playground. Since this idea was floated on our Facebook page, however, we have had feedback from one woman who was involved in the original mural. She has fond memories of it and her own children, nephews and nieces loved to look at it whenever they visited Belmullet. She suggested that, while it would be nice to have the old mural represented in some way, perhaps it’s time for the next generation of painters to put their own spin on the Children of Lir? We could organise a ‘Gathering’ painting event for next year, so lots of people can get involved – whether they are the new or ‘older’ generation of artists! Please note that dog fouling on footpaths and in public places is an offence and the litter warden will not hesitate to prosecute offenders. Dog owners are required by law to remove dog faeces and dispose of it in a suitable sanitary manner. The main reason for this is because dog faeces are unhygienic and pose a significant health hazard, especially to children. Dog faeces can contain toxocara eggs, which – when transmitted to humans – causes toxocariasis. This is a disease that usually affects kids under the age of 10, and is very dangerous for the eyes. If dog faeces are left on footpaths, grass verges, parks and playgrounds, they can be picked up on children’s shoes, adults’ shoes, pushchairs, bicycles and wheelchairs. The toxocara ova in a dog’s faeces can remain viable for up to two years! Previous studies in Ireland have shown that the percentage of soil samples that were positive for toxocara parasites varied from 8.3% in adventure playgrounds to 22% in neighbourhood parks. ‘Bin Your Butt’
As part of our ongoing ‘Bin Your Butt’ campaign, Baile Slachtmhar Bhéal an Mhuirthead has installed three new outdoor ashtrays on American Street - at Langan’s Eurosaver, at The Hair Gallery, and at the apartment block beside the bridge. It came as a great surprise to many people that American Street has been one of the worst places for cigarette butt litter, according to this year’s Litter Action League results. Hopefully, these ashtrays will help to curb the problem.
Flower Project
A group of people from the local Educational Training Board embarked on a project at the Church Road entrance of Cnoc an Chrotaigh (Curlew Hill). They have planted a row of flower bulbs there and we are looking forward to see them bloom – thank you! This project was carried out in association with Belmullet Tidy Towns.
