Erris Care & Repair Service

Are you over 60 and living in Erris? Do you have any odd jobs around the home or garden that you would like some help with? In association with Age Action Ireland, we are delighted to introduce the ‘Erris Care & Repair Service. ’ We have a team of volunteers managed by our Community Officer Lorraine Wilson, who can be called upon to do those minor jobs for you. Also available, if you wish, are people who can call in on you for a chat & a cup of tea each week. All our volunteers are Garda vetted so you can rest assured you are in safe hands. We carry official ID cards at all times and work in pairs to ensure your safety is priority. If you, or somebody you know, wouldlike to make use of this free and confidential service, please contact Lorraine on 097 81079.

Due to popular demand for the Care & Repair Service (and the arrival of summer in the beautiful Barony of Erris!), we are still recruiting new volunteers to help us deliver the service in every parish across the region. We are seeking volunteers with a reasonable level of DIY, gardening or household skills and an interest in helping older people in the community. Currently, there is a big demand for help around the garden as at this time of year, we all like to get all those little outside jobs done. So if, you can spare an hour or two a week to help out an older person in your community, please contact Lorraine on 097 81079.

Open Day Ballyglass Lifeboat Station provided an open day for the public on Sunday 23rd June. A BBQ and family fun day was enjoyed by many together with a tour of the lifeboat.

The Crinnish Challenge 2013 – 20th Anniversary

The Special Olympic Athletes have a motto "Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me brave in the attempt". I think it is appropriate to borrow this for the 115 women & men who braved the bad weather on Saturday 22nd June and took up the challenge to walk/hike to the village of Crinnish. All in aid of the Glencastle National School and Special Class. Special Olympic winner Conor Deane cut the tape and welcomed the 1st woman home (Hill), Sarah Linnane, 1st man home (Hill) Darren Barrett, Joint 1st woman home (Road) Jessica Whelan & Rachel Cattigan and Joint 1st man home Darren Lennon & Paddy Costello. On Saturday night we had double reason to celebrate when Sean McGrath walked into the party with one Gold & one Bronze medal from the Special Olympic games held in Galway that very same day. The organisers would like to thank the local businesses for all their support with this event and the local community for their help in creating a great weekend for all to enjoy. And finally the walkers/ hikers.

Iorras Aontaithe u13's were crowned Mayo Division One Champions after an excellent 6.1 victory over Charlestown in the League decider in Carnenash. With Iorras needing only a point from this game and playing with a stong breeze Iorras started the game strongly and led 4.0 at half time having played some excellent football. Despite Charlestown pulling a goal back after half time Iorras continued to dominate and ran out comprehensive and well deserved winners. Congrats to all the boys.

Lesson 2 Stance & Setup First, proper posture and foot placement allows you to maintain your balance throughout the swing. Balance from address to the finish allows you to hit the ball squarely in the center of the clubface. Balance is the key to consistent ball striking and a good setup allows you to remain in balanced. Good setup helps you create power and control the direction of the shot. Ball position and body alignment create the conditions that lead to control. The body position that you create at address directly influences the path and angle on which you swing the club. Lay a club down pointing at your target. Make sure your feet are parallel to the club on the ground. Make sure your hips are parallel to the club on the ground. Make sure your shoulders are parallel to the club on the ground. Make sure your club face points directly at the target. EASY! But most people don’t do this. So for good ball positioning in your golf swing basics…….. you need to……… Start with your feet together when addressing the ball then slowly widen then so you know where the ball is. The ball needs to be middle of your stance for sand wedge to 6 iron. The ball needs to be about an inch further forward than the middle for your 5 iron to 3 iron. The ball needs to be just inside your left heel. (right-handed golfer) For your woods. Ideally the ball should make forward as the club gets longer! Rip it! EASY AGAIN! Perfect golf swing basics are achievable for anyone! So for good weight distribution in your golf swing basics….you need to….. Keep your weight on the balls of your feet. Practice swinging with the weight staying on the balls of your feet.

Geesala Tidy Towns Litterbug Jitterbug Anti-Litter Project Geesala Tidy Town have been working with the children of Geesala N. S, Bangor N. S, Glencastle N. S and Doohoma N. S on an anti-litter awareness project called The Litterbug jitterbug. The project is about telling a story or getting a message across about anti-litter. The children decided on the music and materials to be used on their costumes which was anything from crisp wrappers to plastic bottles, rags to bin liners turning them into costumes to be worn during filming of The Litterbug Jitterbug dance and song routine. The project involved three stages over three months. (1) Collecting material and making costumes with the children, guided by facilitators to help them think about an anti-litter story. (2) A seminar was held in Aras Inis Gluaire, which was educational, creative and above all fun for the children involved. (3) Filming the children in four locations in Erris doing their Hip Hop dance routine in their hand crafted costumes. Geesala Tidy Towns thank the children, their teachers and parents for getting involved and supporting us in this project.

You probably have a routine that you go through every morning, from checking your agenda to reading the news and catching up on what happened overnight. Morning is an app designed to give you all the information you need to know upon waking up. It keeps a list of your appointments, gives you news and stock information, shows you the weather and your expected commute time, and more. Plus it has a pleasant visual design that won’t be too abrasive to your recently-opened eyes. Cycle-by Nuala Irwin

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the National Day of the United States. During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia declaring the United States independent from Great Britain. After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4. A day earlier, John Adams had written to his wife Abigail: The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more. Adams's prediction was off by two days. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress. Historians have long disputed whether Congress actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, even though Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin all later wrote that they had signed it on that day. Most historians have concluded that the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed. In a remarkable coincidence, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. Although not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, but another Founding Father who became a President, James Monroe, died on July 4, 1831, thus becoming the third President in a row who died on this memorable day. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872, and, so far, is the only President to have been born on Independence Day. (Extract from Wikipedia)
