t has been said that knowledge is power, so the more aware we are of potential problems in our community, the more we need to do something positive and powerful to counteract those potential problems. Our children are our future and deserve our best efforts to protect them and allow them blossom and grow. In 2014, more than 8,000 children contacted the ISPCC about bullying. That?s 23 children per day - almost an entire average sized classroom. The ISPCC knows from listening to children the impact that bullying has on their lives, on their self-esteem, on their ability to grow. The ISPCC set up its Shield Campaign in 2011. The overall aim is to protect children from bullying and from its effects. Our services are preventative and empowering, providing children and young people with the necessary coping skills to deal with and protect themselves from bullying. But standing up against bullying is not something that we can do alone ? everyone has a part to play. What Can You Do To Stand Up Against Bullying? You could check out the ISPCC?s online resources http://www.ispcc.ie/ispcc-shield-/printables--downloadables/12595 If you?re a worried parent, feel free to contact us on our support line (01 6767960) which is open Monday-Friday 09:00-17:30. If you?re a distressed child or young person you can contact us through our Childline service on 1800 66 66 66 or text the word ?Talk?to 50101 for support. A live one to one online chat service is available at www.childline.ie for children who wish to chat via the web. If you?re involved in a school / club contact us around our Shield Programmes. The Shield My School / Club Toolkit, is an evidence based, self-evaluation tool that schools and clubs can use when they are either developing or reviewing their anti-bullying policies or codes of conduct. The toolkit puts over thirty years of nationally and internationally researched information on bullying behaviours and response models, into a simple question format. The toolkit asks a set of reflective questions of the school or club to see where they stand currently in their proactive management of bullying; it can
Shield Our Children
validate what is working well already and highlight areas for development. It takes approximately 2 hours to complete the toolkit, with some follow up work, where needed. A trained ISPCC worker can facilitate the toolkit with a school or club when requested, or on completion of the toolkit, the ISPCC can provide tailored talks, specific to the needs of the school or club. Schools and clubs are free to self-facilitate toolkit also. As you continue to grow and strengthen your anti-bullying policies, ISPCC workers will be available for ongoing support. The overall aim of the self-evaluation tool is to help groups identify how effective they are in dealing with, and reducing, incidences of bullying within the club and community environment. Mairéad Ní Ruáin, Principal of Gaelscoil na Cruaiche Westport, recipients of the first ISPCC Shield my School Flag said; ?We as a school are delighted with our experience in engaging with the ISPCC ?Shield My School? programme. The Blue Shield flag award recognises our efforts in Gaelscoil na Cruaiche to sustain and develop a warm and caring atmosphere where all children feel safe and secure. ? As the summer holidays shorten and we all look forward to getting back to the routine of schools and clubs starting up again, let?s think perhaps about a bit of added protection and a re-evaluation of our current anti bullying policies. 206 schools and clubs across Ireland have already availed of the Shield Anti-Bullying Toolkit to date, available on www.ispcc.ie/shield, plus the Stand-Up Bullying Report Tool ? which can be found at www.ispcc.ie/ispcc-shield-/install-stand-up/7742. This can be installed on the school or clubs own website. It would be fantastic to see more schools and clubs in Mayo take up the programme. A little time invested now in this important area could lead to a lot of time saving on dealing with the issue into the future. For more information on how your club or school can get involved contact ISPCC Mayo on 094 90 25254.

* ORDER TAKE AWAY 097 82797* Multimedia Belmullet Group visit RTE
It was ?lights, camera, action? for the students of the FETAC 5 Multimedia Production course in Belmullet recently as they visited the famous RTE studios in Donnybrook Dublin 4. Every month RTE chooses two local groups or courses studying media to visit the national broadcaster, and for August the media students of Belmullet were selected. ?It was a really worthwhile experience. Our trainees have been studying hard all year, learning about TV production, web design, graphic, and more, so it was wonderful to get them out of the classroom and to visit probably the most famous media work environment in Ireland, ? commented course tutor Edel Golden. ?They were amazed to see behind the scenes and stand in the studios that they see every week on TV. We visited Prime Time, RTE Sport, Winning Streak, the Late Late Show, the Fair City set, and the RTE radio studios. ? Sensing the need for media and IT professionals two years ago,
Ă ras Inis Gluaire in Belmullet launched the FETAC 5 Multimedia Production course, the only course of its kind in Mayo, giving students the opportunity to study subjects such as graphic design and web design in a fully equipped media lab on the beautiful north Mayo coast. Trainees also take part in a hugely beneficial work placement with past students placed at local media and IT companies such as Erris Eye, Gillian Marsh TV, Pinlogic, the Western People, Mid West Radio, and nationally with Flirt FM, Snap Printing, and TV3. The first graduates of the course have gone on to study in third level education or have found employment, particularly in the IT/web sector. The popular FETAC 5 Multimedia Production course will be run again this year at Ă ras Inis Gluaire from September 21st with a limited number of places remaining for this year's course. If you would like to partake in the course call Tim on 0879177558 or check out www.mayotraining.eu. Travel and training allowances are available to eligible candidates.

As September approaches, the days are getting longer, autumn is setting in and for children of many ages this signals the start of the new school year. For some this is part of an established routine but for others it is the start of a new chapter in their young and impressionable lives. Starting school is an exciting, momentous and sometimes nerve wracking event in a young child?s life. It signals the growth from toddler/ baby to young child. It is a time filled with many adventures and challenges along the way. We must of course spare a thought for worried parents who travel on this path with their child particularly if they are walking this road for the first time. Seeing your first born smartly dressed in their first school uniform schoolbag in hand heading to ?big school? can be a very emotional time for any parent as they see their little bundle of joy grow up and start to make their own way in the world. These children will grow and develop their own little personalities as they journey through primary school learning many new and important skills along the way. They then enter secondary school with its bigger buildings and crowds of people milling around, they will need to learn to deal with more than one teacher and several new subjects they will also have to navigate to more than one classroom all the while dealing with the challenges of becoming a teenager and forming their own identity as they grow through their school years. School however although an anxious time in a child?s life can also be the best time in a child?s life, learning new skills, new languages and broadening their horizons shaping them into confident capable adults able to take on this sometimes difficult mixed up world and making many friends along the way some of whom will stay with them long past those memorable school days. Mayo shoppers spending as much as ?75million online each year. Time for local Erris business to
get their slice of the big online pie. Shoppers in Mayo are spending as much as ?75 million each year online and that figure, which is a conservative estimate, and is expected to more than double by 2017. The online sales figure is derived from research by Eurostat, the official statistics board of the European Union. In response to the huge growth in online shopping, Erris Chamber has organised an event for Wednesday, September 9th, in association with Mayo Local Enterprise Office (LEO), to help local business get a slice of the massive online retail sector. Expert speakers will be at the event to talk about how businesses can start, or improve on, their sales online and some of the supports and grants available to businesses in this area. Every day, a massive ?8.5 million in online shopping goes to companies outside of Ireland, according to Eurostat. ?Representatives from the Mayo Local Enterprise Office (LEO), who support local micro, small and medium businesses and sole traders, will be there on the evening to offer advice on the Trading online Voucher Scheme as well as other supports and grants businesses may be eligible for, in terms on their digital presence. ? A $300 million transatlantic cable has landed ashore at Killala in Co Mayo. The cable will provide a super fast internet connection and is expected to be a major economic boost for the west. The fibre optic cable is owned and operated by Irish company Aqua Comms and will run directly from Ross Strand in Killala to Long Island, New York. It has the capacity to handle up to one third of the world's telephone calls and can cover the entire internet traffic of Europe and the US. The system will enable 53.8 millisecond transfer speeds across the Atlantic when it goes live in early 2016. The new digital infrastructure is expected to create a significant number of jobs and business opportunities in the western region. Taoiseach Enda Kenny attended the landing of the cable.
