This month read about the many sporting activities in Erris namely the Connaught Rugby team who visited and trained in Erris hosted by the Erris Rugby Club. Front cover photo shows the U-16 Erris rugby team in action against Claremorris in the league play-off. Also recently in Erris the Kilmore Triathlon was held, see inside for more on that. Runner Sinead Diver, an Erris native who represented Australia in the World Championships made the headlines as she did well in the marathon she ran. AGM The AGM of Comharchumann Forbartha Cill tSeadhna Teo took place recently at No. 2 Pairc Saile, Geesala. Michael Goonan welcomed the large attendance and opened the meeting by thanking the board, the manager and the staff for their dedication throughout the year. After four years as Chairman, Michael Goonan retired. Kathleen Doocey, secretary of the organisation gave a report of the years activities and events. The manager, Kathy Rowland reported on the day to day running of the organisation outlining the financial statement for the year end 2014. The newly elected Chairman, Paddy Joe Deane thanked Michael Gonnan for his trojan work and dedication over the years and stated that Michael was an inspiration to everyone involved and a valued member of the organisation. He also welcomed newly elected Pat Mc Donagh to the board. Rugby legends Cycle into Erris... Once a year the C.R.O.S.S cycles the length of Ireland with a host of fun-loving rugby legends. With over ?225,750 for the CROSS cancer research charity being raised so for over 4 years this annual event has grown in popularity. The cyclist stopped for a break in Bangor Erris and the onto Our Lady's School in Belmullet, before continuing onto to Donegal. Rachel Allen Goes Wild In Blacksod...
This Summer we had the privilege of bringing Rachel Allen foraging in Blacksod as part of her Coastal Cookery Series, the series will be broadcast on RTE1, with episode 1 airing on the 23 September. Gaol Siar will feature in episode 10 to be aired later in the series. Pictured with Rachel on her recent visit is Barbara Henaghan of Gaol Siar.
Summer 2015 foraging workshops
We have had a wonderful Summer with our wild foraging walks and heritage tours in Erris, here is a small collection of photos from our very busy summer. The soft rains encouraged more wild plants to grow which enhanced the experience for all our foragers. We are still running wild foraging walks and have recommenced our wild foraging workshops. Keep an Eye on Business IWA Golf Competition The Erris Branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association held their inaugural Golf Competition in the Sandy Banks Golf Club, Doohoma on Saturday 22nd August 2015. The winner of the IWA Perpetual Shield was Barry McAndrew (Jnr), the winner of the Ladies Competition was Eimear Gilroy, the juniors winner was Catherine Smyth. The nearest to the pin prize went to Kyle Holmes and the scratch prize went to Danny Malone. Well done to all our winners. Thank you to everyone who played on the day and to those who attended our Prize-giving Social in Trá Buí (Holmes of Doohoma) afterwards. Thank you to all of our sponsors, to the fishermen who provided the seafood and to the people who bid on all our auction items. Your support is greatly appreciated. Thank you also to Trá Buí for their hospitality on the night. Finally thank you to Pat and Micheál of The Sandy Banks Golf Club Doohoma for all your help in organising the event. The competition was a great success and we already looking forward to next year! All of the funds raised will be going towards our services here in Erris.

It's that time of year again - the evenings are getting long and what better way to spend it than having a game of cards!! There are two upcoming games for the IWA - Friday 23rd October at IWA Centre, Logmore starting at 8.30pm. Refreshments served on the night. ISPCC Childhood Support Service in North Mayo The ISPCC in Mayo is pleased to introduce a new Childhood Support Worker covering the North Mayo area. The ISPCC provides a free, comprehensive, community based one to one support service (including out of hours access) to children and young people who may be experiencing emotional and behavioural difficulties. This is provided by professional ISPCC support workers. Children and families come to us with a wide range of issues, they are often in a crisis situation and they are unsure where they can access support. Every child and family is unique and has individual needs; however, common reasons for referral include parental separation, grief and loss, children affected by bullying or a traumatic life change for the family. Our approach Our approach is to build upon individual strengths and acknowledge the central role of children in decision making. The active participation of families is built into each intervention plan ensuring that our work makes a lasting difference in the life of each child we work with. Our intervention plans are tailor-made to suit the needs of each individual child with support sessions available in the home or ISPCC centre during the day or out of hours. How does it work? The service aims to intervene to provide children and young people with the necessary supports to promote psychological resilience and maintain their psychological well being, regardless of social or emotional background. Anyone concerned about a child can make a referral to the service. This includes parents, professionals and young people themselves. Putting young people in control The service is for and owned by children, which means: The child can decide if they want to meet with us The child can talk to an ISPCC worker face-to-face, on the telephone or over the web. The child works with us to put a plan in place which will provide support to them in overcoming difficulties in their life Visits happen weekly and usually last for about 6 months, but this can change to suit the needs of each child. Planning is now underway for the LEADER element of the Rural
Development Programme (RDP) 2014-2020. It is expected that by January 2016, the Department of the Environment, Community & Local Government will decide on who will deliver the new LEADER programme in Mayo. The Local Community Development Committee (Mayo County Council), South West Mayo Development Company, Mayo North East LEADER Partnership Company and Comhar na nOile谩n Teo are coming together to draw up a county wide plan ? a Local Development Strategy (LDS) - for the new LEADER programme. They are now seeking the input of communities for the community aspect of the plan. In this community-led process, a number of community consultation meetings are being organised throughout the county so that every area and community has the opportunity to have its needs and ideas for local community projects included in the community element of the LDS. This is an opportunity for your community representatives to contribute to the community aspect of the countywide plan which will lay out how funds for the community element of LEADER will be used over the duration of the programme, until 2020. If you are unable to attend this particular consultation you are welcome to attend another meeting convenient to you. If you are no longer active in your organisation, please pass this on to those who have replaced you, and in addition please feel free to bring it to the attention of other community groups in your locality. There is no limit on the number of attendees from any community. Please note that this is the community element consultation only; other meetings and consultation events will address the needs of rural enterprise, private business etc. Community consultation meetings for community groups, local committees & voluntary organisations are being held throughout September and early October as follows:

begin on Monday 21st September. There will be two time slots available. Group 1 will be from 1.00pm to 3.00pm and Group 2 will be from 3.00pm to 5.00pm. There are a limited number of places available so booking is essential. The sessions will run for 12 weeks & cost is ? 6.00 per session. Payment is required in advance & can be made in two instalments on Week 1 & Week 6. Participants will need to purchase their own materials. Computer?s for Farm Families Mayo North East in conjunction with The Men?s Community Initiative will run a course for farming families in the coming weeks. It will be held at Áras Inis Gluire over five nights for 2 hours each night and is funded under the Social Inclusion & Community Activation Programme. The course will give an introduction to using a computer for your farming needs. Anyone with an interest in learning these skills is welcome to join us. Places are limited & booking is essential. The annual Belmullet Traditional Music Festival, Feile an Fhomhair, is now in it's fifth year. This year's festival will take place, as usual, on the last weekend in September, from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th. The programme of events is as follows: Frankie Gavin and De Dannan, in concert in Aras Inis Gluaire, at 8pm, on Friday September 25th. Tickets/Info from (097) 81079. This will be followed by the official launch and session in An Cheibh, at approx. 10pm. On Saturday 26th, there will be workshops held in Aras Inis Gluaire; in tin whistle with Sean Ryan, accordion with Charlie Harris, "Gaeilge Iorrais' with Liam Mac Congail and sean nos dancing with Micheal O'Raghallaigh. Workshop times are 11am to 4pm with a break for lunch from 1pm to 2pm! This years Concert - ceolchoirm an fheile, is a 'tribute to past musicians of Belmullet parish' and will take place on Saturday night at 7.30pm, in Aras Inis Gluaire. There will be various sessions, around the town, in the pubs, throughout the day and night. Look out for our sandwich boards "Trad Session Here" On Sunday the 27th, there will be slan abhaile sessions in pubs around the town.

Erris Woman Competes in Beijing

There was joy for Sinead Diver in Beijing as the Irish woman representing Australia finished in a strong 21st place in the marathon at the World Championships in Beijing. The Melbourne based athlete recording a clocking of 2:36:38 in humid conditions, to finish as the first Australian home, in her debut major championship. ?I was ranked 31st going in, so I wanted to beat my ranking,? remarked Diver in the aftermath. ?If I had got top 20 I would have been ecstatic, but I?m still really happy with 21st. It was really exciting to be on the start line with all the best runners in the world. It was daunting, but I was so ready to get out there and race today.? The 38 year old, who has a PB of 2:34.15, from her debut marathon in Melbourne last year, admitted to having to adjust her pace in order to get the best out of herself in the Beijing humidity. ?I knew I was in good form, and that I?m fit. I knew I had to race smart. I was never aiming for a PB, because if I did, I could have completely blown up half way through. So for me it was about feeling controlled for most of the race. I?m so glad I did that because it was so tough at the end.? From Belmullet in County Mayo, Diver moved to Australia aged 25, and has lived there for the last 13 years, residing in Melbourne. The mother of two was a late comer to the sport of athletics, only taking up running five years ago at the age of 33, discovering her talent by accident at a corporate fun run event. The scale of her progression is something which remains not lost on the Irish woman, and the enormity of her achievement of qualifying to run in Beijing was something which enabled her to enjoy the championship race experience, despite the gruelling nature of the distance. ?I had to remind myself of where I have come from while I was running. You?re at the world championships. Enjoy this. Soak it in. I did for the most part. I did surprisingly enjoy a lot of that race.? Despite making the difficult decision to represent Australia, rather than her homeland, Diver spoke fondly about the support she has received from Ireland ahead of these championships. ?It?s been unbelievable, so I?m really grateful for that. I think in the local in Belmullet they were all up late watching it. They?ve all been brilliant. Everyone from college, those I worked with, those in Belmullet, everyone has been supporting me. Blacksod Welcome for Bressie & Co.
Last weekend, there was a great welcome in the Erris region for Irish musician Bressie, and for his comrades from his RTÉ Two 'Ironmind' documentary. The popular TV personality is taking four fitness novices on a journey to explore the link between positive physical and mental health. The Blacksod Point Challenge triathlon was the group's biggest challenge yet - a fantastic achievement! Almost 200 triathletes took part in the Blacksod Point Challenge in Erris, which was hosted by Erris Beo and the Kilmore Triathlon Club. With the exception of a few very small showers, the weather was warm and sunny. The race involves a 1,500m swim in Blacksod Bay, a 41km cycle up the Mullet Peninsula to and from Belmullet town, and a 10km run through some of the most beautiful Wild Atlantic Way locations, overlooking the Inis Gé islands. The overall male winner was Stephen Donnelly from Ballina, and the overall female winner was Caoimhe Ní Mhurchú from Sligo. The Blacksod Point Challenge is a National Series Race, sanctioned by Triathlon Ireland, the national governing body for the sport. This Olympic distance race has become known as "an animal with teeth", due to its test of endurance that pushes participants to their limits. Even though the race has become known as one of Ireland's toughest and most gruelling triathlons, the spectacular views of the Erris region attracts hundreds of competitors to the area every year. The UK?s ?Telegraph?newspaper recommends the triathlon for its ?picturesque setting? and the crew from ?Outsider Magazine??couldn?t recommend it more!? Rina Garrett, Tourism Development Manager of Erris Beo, said: ?The Blacksod Point Challenge has become a fantastic annual Erris event, even for the non-participants! Every year, the athletes are blown away by the welcome and the encouragement they receive from the locals. Erris R.F.C. Host Connacht Rugby Training Camp Last week we had what was probably our best ever off-site camp. The senior management and a squad of 42 players spent five days in the beautiful town of Belmullet, Co Mayo. Sean Barrett and John Keane at Erris Rugby Club were fantastic in everything they did for us and the facilities were top notch. While we had a fair mix of Irish weather, it was a great experience for so many of the squad who hadn't been to this part of Ireland. We travel a lot and stay in a lot of hotels and the one thing you'll notice with players is that they don't care too much about how fancy or not the hotel is. As long as the quality and the quantity of the food is high, they are happy players! And at the Broadhaven Bay Hotel we were spoilt with the food. We had time to work it off though with all the training sessions and other activities throughout the week. Bundee Aki, Finlay Bealham and others went down to Colaiste UISCE for some surfing, which they loved -even if it was a good bit colder than what they've experienced in the southern hemisphere! Malachy Gaughan, our bus driver for the week, brought others out to Carne Golf Links at Belmullet Golf Club which is meant to be one of the best in Europe. Again the people were just so welcoming, with the golf pros out there lending their clubs to the players and offering their expertise. Pat, a local man, brought a group out fishing and there were some great stories and videos that came back from that boat excursion. Apparently James Connolly was the only player not to
have caught a fish, but I hear the other lads might have stitched him up! A big thanks to TJ Lennon for the use of his boat. On the last night we had our annual 'Connacht's got talent' where all the players in their mini teams perform a song or routine. This year, lip-syncing was the challenge. The older guys like John Muldoon and Nathan White secretly love it as they always get really involved and competitive on the night! As well as all the fun and activities, we had quality sharp training sessions and meetings to sign off our team goals for the season. Obviously Champions Cup qualification sits at the top but we have other internal goals, around for example our set-piece, home ground, the interpros. All in all it was a very successful week and we couldn't be more thankful to everyone who looked after us. It set us up nicely coming into this match week. We had nine weeks of pre-season and I'm really happy with what we achieved in that time-frame. But we know we now need to convert that into a good performance and a win over Dragons tonight as every point counts towards our ultimate goal Tonight is a huge game for us and we have stressed the importance of starting well, both in the season as well as the game itself. Dragons are a side that have been growing stronger and stronger and they've recruited well over the summer. through Bangor-Erris heading towards Ballina. It's been there for as long as people can remember. Even the elders in the community have said it was always there whilst they attended school and grew up around Bangor. Rag bushes are rare enough but there are several examples all over Ireland.Some are hard to find as they can be associated with holy wells or places of religious importance so sometimes they may be hidden from view and one may have to walk a little distance to find them.However the Bangor rag bush stands in all its glory on the roadside on the eastern side of Bangor village, adorned all year round with rags and bits of different coloured materials and is a lovely colorful sight especially on a dreary winters day! We must note here that such is the importance of this rag bush that it is registered as a heritage tree on the tree council of Ireland website. Travellers passing through villages often hung a colourful rag on a 'rag bush' to indicate they had passed the way and found the village to be a favourable place. Naturally one rag led to another and a pattern of leaving rags on particular bushes was formed. As mentioned previously, these rag bushes were close to holy wells and mass rocks and were places of piety and prayer. A strip of clothing taken from a sick person was often hung on a rag bush and fervent prayers recited for their return to health.It was believed that by the time the cloth had rotted...the sick person would be cured. Rag bushes were sometimes referred to as' fairy trees ' or 'may bushes' and are usually hawthorn trees. Indeed the famous Irish singer John Mc Cormack recorded a famous song called 'The Fairy Tree'. Of all the Irish songs he recorded, it is the best loved. The tune was written in 1930 by Dr.Vincent O'Brien whilst John McCormack was his student. Mc Cormack recorded it in December of the same year and thanks to modern technology, you can listen to this song on youtube!The lyrics are also available there. It refers to a rag bush in Clogheen,Tipperary. Rag bushes are a throwback to a bygone era you might say, but each time I pass the Bangor rag bush there are different rags, or 'clotties' as they are sometimes called, hanging there. Who puts them there? I don't know. When are they placed there as nobody ever seems to be seen leaving these rags? We must also note that this rag bush is on private property and the landowner should always be asked for permission to enter onto his land. Thanks to Maria Cuffe.
