FORTHCOMING EVENT - LAUNCH OF BOOK AT TURAS SIAR
On Sunday 6th March at 3pm there will be the launch of our first book including 3 cd?s at Turas Siar at a cost of 20 euros each. We are very honoured to have this book launched by the original voice of Radio Na Gaeltachta in Mayo, Seán ó Healaí. This book has been taken from old tape recordings of over 30 years ago, transcribed into text both in Irish and English and also digitised onto 3 cd?s so whilst listening to the cd?s you can follow the text. This project has taken 12 months to complete and we are deeply grateful to Údaras Na Gaeltachta for all their help and support also we are very thankful to the main funding body, CGIF who were behind this project whose funding made this project possible. Also grateful for the time and patience of Sean Harrington who transcribed and translated and edited the book and also to the sound technician Tony Conway who electronically re-engineered and edited the old recordings. Many thanks to Aras Inis Gluaire for all their help and support throughout this project and who will be having their own launch on Friday 11th March at 7pm. Also to Ronan Courell who produced the cd?s. We are also thankful to those who gave us their kind permission to use their personal photographs for the book. And finally to those who produced the book for us, Gary and Frances Todd. The launch will be followed by a feast of music by local musicians, seannós songs and maybe a few fireside stories. Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) have launched a national competition to source five new designs for their Angels Pin collection. The winning designs will be manufactured, produced and sold as part of the Association?s national fundraising campaign, Angels which takes place each November. IWA is asking Transition Year students to enter the competition and submit creative and original designs, which will be later used as the Association?s official emblems during the 2016 Angels Campaign. Service Coordinator Rosaleen Lally stated: ?Transition Year is an excellent opportunity for students to become more actively involved in their local community; volunteer their time, or develop a hobby or skill further, which overall will enhance their learning experience. The Angels Pin Design Competition is an excellent platform for young people with an interest in graphic design, an artistic talent or a creative flair to design an official pin for one of Ireland?s leading social enterprises and representative organisations for people with disabilities.? IWA provides a range of services to people with disabilities from Erris and the surrounding areas from its busy Day Centre located in Logmore Belmullet. The Association also has a dedicated Youth Service for young people with disabilities which aims to empower children with disabilities to be independent and gain social confidence. IWA Belmullet is appealing to local TY students and their Coordinators to support Irish Wheelchair Association and enter the Angels Pin Design Competition. IWA Belmullet Angel Coordinator, Rosaleen Lally explained: ?IWA relies on the support of local secondary schools for assistance with initiatives and programmes throughout the year. The Association facilitates work experience and volunteer placements and welcomes the involvement of young people who always bring fresh ideas and concepts to activities, fundraisers and events which we are planning. I hope the local TY students will support IWA by entering a design in the national competition to find our new pins for the 2016 Angels campaign?. The Angels campaign seeks to raise funds to ensure that IWA may continue to lead the way in improving the lives of people with physical disabilities, their families and communities. During the campaign, volunteers throughout Ireland sell Angel products in local shopping centres, schools and town centres. One of the key aspects of the campaign is the announcement and launch of the new Angels Pin designs each year. IWA are asking TY students across Ireland to assist the Association with this year?s campaign and design their very own Angel Pin. Entries can be submitted in hardcopy to: Angels Pin Design Competition, Irish Wheelchair Association, Blackheath Drive, Clontarf, Dublin 3 or in softcopy format to angels@iwa.ie. Erris parkrun joins Ballina, Castlebar and Westport What do London, Sydney, Copenhagen, Capetown,
Westport, Castlebar, Ballina and now Erris have in common? Well, these are some of the wonderful locations worldwide that host a parkrun event. parkrun is a global network of weekly 5 km timed runs or walks in local parks that take place each and every Saturday morning year round. Currently there are over 800 parkruns worldwide with almost 1.5 million people taking part in events since its inception. The runs and walks are open to all ages and abilities, they are free to enter, hosted in safe traffic free environments and are easy to take part in. parkrun is a community based initiative that encourages participation, not competition. The Saturday morning runs are open to all ages, and make for a fun and active way for families to kick start their weekends. Erris has been particularly active in the past few weeks due to the success of popular local man John Conmy in the Operation Transformation programme with walks and other physical activity sessions in full swing throughout the region. Now February 20th 2016 will see parkrun come to the scenic Cross Loop, Cross, Binghamstown, Belmullet, Co. Mayo for the first time. This inaugural event coincides with the nationwide Operation Transformation 5k being held in the Phoenix Park and at all the various parkruns throughout the country on that day. The meeting point is at Cross graveyard and walk to the start of the course adjacent to Cross lake. This free weekly event, taking place at 9.30am sharp, is hosted by the Erris Community with the support of other organizations such as Mayo Sports Partnership, the HSE through their Get Ireland Active initiative, the West Mayo Municipal District of Mayo County Council and locally through the Erris Men on the Move, the Wild Atlantic Warriors run club and the Cross Loop Walk committee. The event provides both locals and visitors with a safe and fun environment for the perfect Saturday morning jog or walk. Events are timed each week with results uploaded to the parkrun web site where the eager runners can track their runs and progress. All participants ? both walkers and runners must register for the event on http://www.parkrun.ie/erris Registration is free and once registered, participants receive a unique barcode that enables them to take part at any of the global events without having to re-register. Speaking to the Erris Eye joint Event Directors Padraig Brogan and Stephen Barrett stress that it?s not a race - it?s a recreational run, jog or walk at an individual?s own pace. The lads admitted the support from the community has been phenomenal to date and paid tribute to Matt Shields from parkrun Ireland, Charlie Lambert from Mayo Sports Partnership and Ann Egan and the Ballina parkrun team for their support and assistance. ?We are hoping that individuals and clubs throughout the area will get on board with this great event on their doorsteps in one of the most scenic locations in the county? added the lads. Mayo now has 4 sites in Ballina, Castlebar, Westport and now Erris, information on each can be found on www.parkrun.ie. Even if you did not have a barcode the organizers invite anyone who wishes to try parkrun out to come along on the Saturday morning at any of the above locations. Andrew Baylan loses 5st! When a suit barely fitted Andrew Baylan at Christmas in 2014, he and his wife Amanda decided that 2015 would be the year they would lose weight. Nearly five stone lighter he?s proud to report that his life, his health and his relationship are stronger than ever thanks to Unislim ?I started to put on the weight from the age of 30 onwards. I was married with kids, eating lots of takeaways, and had given up things like football so wasn?t really exercising anymore. Then at Christmas in 2014, I was getting dressed for a funeral and I put on a suit. The shirt just about went around me. The suit jacket was tighter again, and I thought: enough is enough. Amanda and I were talking about losing weight and we decided then to make a change in 2015. We joined Unislim on the 7th of January 2015. ?I?m not a great cook, but I?ve learned to cook more since starting Unislim. We?d each do our own lunches, and then we?d split the dinners ? Amanda would do four or five a week and I?d try to do a couple. That way we each got what we liked individually during the day but for dinner we?d eat things we liked together. ?There?s always a bit of friendly competition between us. We?d have weeks where she would lose a pound more than me, or I would lose a pound more than her. You?d be tempted to put the foot on the scales on her weigh-in to add on a couple of pounds! But we always encouraged each other and spurred each other on. I really think I would have struggled on my own. It?s very difficult if one person is eating takeaways while you?re trying to stick to healthy dinners. ?I probably would have tried to do something on my own, but definitely it makes a huge difference to do it with someone else. I think I would have struggled to go by myself, but I soon realised I wasn?t on my own with the support from my leaders. The meetings definitely keep you on track and I?d encourage anyone to go and give them a shot.?

?I Feel Fantastic!?? Amanda Baylan Loses Over 7st 5lb! Amanda Baylan has lost a massive seven stone and 5lbs since joining Unislim with husband Andrew in January. Before Unislim she hated shopping and simply picked out the anything that fitted, or found herself making her own clothes as she couldn?t find anything to suit her shape in the shops. But now she likes nothing more than dressing up and enjoying herself ? and doesn?t she look amazing?! ?I never really had a weight problem when growing up, but after my second child was born in 1997, I didn?t lose all the baby weight and gradually, as time passed, the weight slowly crept on. My daughter had been to Unislim before and was keen for me to try it. When Andrew tried on his suit last year for a funeral and it didn?t fit, I realised I really needed to do something about myself too. ?I was very determined to stick to the Unislim plan, and I believe that if you want something to work, you need to put 100% in. I think it?s great that nothing is banned, that you can have a little bit of everything, but I decided to keep things as healthy and wholesome as possible. ?Obviously at the weigh-in there would be a bit of banter between Andrew and I, but it definitely helps to have the encouragement. We?d have nights where one of us would be saying, ?I?m a bit peckish?, and it helps to have the other person suggest healthier options. I found that having two people sharing the same goals is a bonus, and we really enjoy planning nutritious meals together. ?It?s definitely strengthened us as a couple. You spur the other one on throughout. And losing the weight gives you such a positive attitude towards everything else in your life. I love seeing him out running, and he loves seeing me trying on new clothes and complimenting me. ?We joined Unislim last January and this New Year we celebrated our new lives. We just can?t believe how fantastic we feel ? life is brilliant! It?s amazing how much you can achieve in just one year.?

We in Erris will continus to support these people as best we can. A humanatarian aid collection will take place in Belmullet in the next few weeks for institutes and orphanages in Belarus. Adults and childrens clothing and shoes, towels, bed clothes, Baby equipment , toys ,nappies both adults and childrens, and toiletries all needed. Everything must be in good condition please. If possible when bagging or boxing items please keep adults clothes separate to childrens and label bags. This will make our job of packing much easier. Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Health Billy Kelleher has outlined the party?s health priorities for the next five years. Fianna Fáil is proposing an additional ?1.3billion of investment in services in a targeted programme directing resources where they are needed most. ?The current crisis in health services is based fundamentally on five years of failed Fine Gael policies and an obsession with managing the media rather than managing the health service. The first thing we?ll do is to end Fine Gael?s damaging changes and return the emphasis to investing in public health services, ? said Billy Kelleher. He said: ?We are proposing the recruitment of an additional 500 consultants over five years. This will make a significant contribution to reducing waiting lists and the numbers on trolleys. We will also reactivate the National Treatment Purchase Fund to ensure that patients are not waiting unreasonable periods for scheduled treatments. ?There will also be significant emphasis on home care for older people in medical need. We will reverse the cut of one million home help hours and provide two million more than what is currently being provided. There will also be a significant increase in home care packages with 3,500 extra projected. ?On medical cards the Fianna Fáil spokesman said children with disabilities whose family are in receipt of the Domiciliary Care allowance will also receive a medical card. He also pledged to ensure a humane approach on discretionary medical cards so that ill health does not result in financial hardship. ?Other measures that will help people are the abolition of prescription charges and a reduction in the Drug Payment Threshold from ?144 to ?120. ?The recruitment of 4,000 more nurses in both the primary and acute sectors will also ensure speedier access health services. We also need to improve dental care and we will provide for another fifty dental surgeons. We will also enable children with urgent dental need access the Treatment Purchase Fund where necessary.? Concluding the Fianna Fáil Health spokesperson said he was being very careful not to overpromise or say he will solve every problem in the health service. ?Too many unrealistic commitments were made by Fine Gael and Labour in 2011, leading to too many promises being broken over the past five years, eroding public confidence and trust in politics. ?We are not going down that road. Instead we will make solid commitments to improve services where need is greatest. ?
Keep an Eye on Erris Services The Green Thing....Yesterday after
shopping in our local supermarket, I was in the queue at the check-out, and heard when the young cashier suggested to the much older lady that she should bring her own grocery bags, because plastic bags are not good for the environment.The woman apologised to the young girl & then sighed, "We didn't have this 'green thing' back in my earlier days."The young clerk responded, "That's our problem today. You folk didn't do enough to save our environment for future generations."The older lady said "Ahh yes you're right -- our generation didn't have the "green thing" in its day." She sighed then continued: Back then, we returned milk bottles, lemonade bottles & beer bottles to the shops. The shops then sent them back to the plant to be washed, sterilized & refilled, so those same bottles were used over & over, thus REALLY were recycled. But we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day. Grocery stores put our groceries into brown paper bags that we reused for numerous things. Most memorable was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our school books. This was to ensure that public property (the books provided for our use by the school) were not defaced by our scribblings. Then we were able to personalise our books on their brown paper bag/covers. But, too bad we didn't do the "green thing" back then. I remember how we walked up stairs because we didn't have an escalator in every store or office building; walked to the grocery store & didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go 200 yards. . . . But she was right. We didn't have the "green thing" in our day. Back then we washed the baby's nappies because we didn't have the throw away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts. Wind & solar power really did dry our clothes back in our days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. . . . But that young lady is right; we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day. Back then we had one radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And if anyone did own a TV, it had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of a football pitch. When cooking we blended & stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send by post, we used layers of old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity., , , , But she's right; we didn't have the "green thing" back then. We drank from a tap or fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen & we replaced the razor blade in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the "green thing" back then. Back then, people took the bus & kids rode bikes to school or walked instead of turning their mothers into a 24-hour taxi service in the family's expensive car or van, which cost what a whole house did before the "green thing".. Oh and we had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest leisure park. . . . . But it so sad this current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the "green thing" back then? . . . I think you should forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from some smart ass young person. .. ...We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to annoy us... Especially from a smart ass who can't make change without the cash register telling them how much. Found on social media by an oldy!

Keep an Eye on Erris Services Basic Cookery Skills Course for men As part of our ongoing Men?s Community
Initiative programme at Áras Inis Gluaire, we are delighted to announce that we will be running a 6 week Basic Cookery Skills Course for men. This will begin on Tuesday 16th February and will be delivered over six Tuesday nights from 7.30pm to 9.00pm. Total cost per person is ?60 which includes all ingredients & materials. Classes will be facilitated by Chef Luke Syron and will take place at Carne Golf Links. Limited places are available so early booking is essential. Total cost per person is ? 60. This course may be suitable for those living alone who want to be able to cook a simple, healthy, nutritious meal. All the basics will be covered including advice on basic kitchen cupboard essentials, planning meals, and of course, healthy meal options. A new recipe will be covered each night with full demonstration & each person will participate in preparation & cooking of their meals. All ingredients and materials will be provided & are included in the cost. Ingredients have been generously sponsored by Cuffe?s Centra Belmullet. Friday March 11 will see the official launch in Áras Inis Gluaire of Turas Siar go Cill Mór a bilingual Book/CD taken from tapes made from the 1960s onwards by local historian Pádraig Ó Murchú from Cartúr on the Mullet Peninsula. These tapes, which have been transcribed from the Irish and translated into English by Seán Harrington, contain descriptions of everyday life in the harsh environment of the remote Erris peninsula in North-West Mayo in times gone by, describing occupations such as farming, fishing, social events and much more. This work is replete with old-fashioned words and phrases which are no longer in common usage, and as such provides not just a social history but an important resource for anybody interested in authentic Erris Irish. The book is laid out with an English translation on alternate pages, the intention being that it can also be used as an educative resource, particularly for local people with an interest, but not necessarily a fluency in the language. The book will be launched by Joe Byrne of Mid-West Radio on Friday March 11 in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet, at 7 p.m. In order to attract as much local interest as possible, the launch will be conducted mostly in English so that those not yet fluent in the Irish language, but with an interest in it, can be fully included in the evening?s proceedings.
