The Homemaker's Scheme

Transition year students from St. Brendan's College, Belmullet enjoying their recent trip to Barcelona.

Question I?m going to take some time off work to look after my children. What effect will this have on my contributions for the State pension? Answer (May 2016) Under the Homemaker?s Scheme, time you spend out of the workforce caring for children or a person with a disability can be disregarded when calculating your entitlement for a State Pension (Contributory). The scheme came into effect on 6 April 1994 (time spent homemaking before this is not taken into account). You do not get credits for years spent out of the workforce. Instead these years will be disregarded when working out your entitlement to a State Pension (Contributory). However, you may get credits for the remainder of the year you leave the workforce, and for part of the year when you rejoin the workforce. A homemaker, for the purposes of the Homemaker?s Scheme is a man or woman who provides full-time care for a child under the age of 12 or an ill or disabled person aged 12 or over. A homemaking year is a year in which you are out of the workforce for the full tax year. Up to a maximum of 20 homemaking years can be disregarded when working out your entitlement to a State Pension (Contributory). To qualify for a State Pension (Contributory) you must have a minimum yearly average number of contributions from when you entered social insurance to pension age. The Homemaker?s scheme provides that full contribution years spent caring in the home are disregarded in calculating a person?s yearly average number of contributions. Take, for example, a woman who started work in 1985, took 10 years out of work to care for children from 1995 to 2005 and then returned to work for another 20 years before retiring in 2025 and applying for a State Pension. Her yearly average would be calculated over 30 years instead of 40 years when the 10 years spent in the home are disregarded. Further information is available from Citizens Information Centres and from the Citizens Information Phone Service, call 0761 07 4000.

22-year-old fundraiser, Alex Ellis-Roswell, is walking around the coast of Great Britain and Ireland to raise money for the RNLI. He?s well into his two year challenge, which will see him cover 10,000 miles. The plan was to visit every lifeboat station in Britain and Ireland while fundraising for the RNLI. Alex arrived in Belmullet last week and walked the Mullet Penninsula, carrying a 20kg rucksack with him on the journey. Grieving for his late father, Alex ended his live-in relationship, sold his marketing business Pictured in Belmullet ?for half nothing? and, with ?3,500, hit the road in August 2014. ?My head was in turmoil,? said Alex. ?I needed a plan.? Leaving Minnis Bay in Kent, the plan was to visit every lifeboat station in Britain and Ireland while fundraising for the RNLI. Our front page cover was taken whilst Alex was sheltering in the shed of an empty school, during his 15 mile walk from Pullathomas to Belderig. He has done really well for the Mayo Lifeboat stations, and has had a great reception in Erris and we want to wish him well as he heads away from Erris towards Sligo.

IORRAS AONTAITHE The Club has just launched its all new line of Club merchandises along with replica jerseys, caps, scarves, car stickers, key rings, baby wear & much more. If you'd like to order any item give Eric a tinkle on 087-6300830. Big changes in the Sports Genius (Club fundraiser) as Saracens and Leicester claim their titles. Most of you had Man City to win. Only a handful of you got all three teams that were relegated. A good few benefited from Arsenal finishing as runners up. This of course was due to the Annual (hilarious) Tottenham collapse. Chairman Micky Dixon is not in good form. Somewhat disappointingly, we have gone from three women in the top seven, to only two in the top twenty. The football has really sorted the men from the boys........and the girls. Well done to all the slow starters as we finally got everybody off zero points. The U14 Kennedy cup squad trained at the Iorras Aontaithe grounds in Carnenash recently. Iorras Aontaithe star Owen McHale is part of the squad. This was the first time a Kennedy cup team has visited Iorras and all at Iorras Aontaithe would like to thank the Mayo management for bringing the lads to Carnenash and endorsing the club facilities with their visit. Many thanks to Kerry McHale, Lorraine O?Connor and Youth Secretary Eric O?Reilly and the BuilĂn Blasta for all their help. At the time of writing, the U13 side are top of Division One with two games remaining and in the quarter final of the U13 cup. The U15 side are in mid-table in the Premier Division. The U17 side are joint top of the Premier league with two games remaining.

On Sunday the 15th of May 12 Ty students from Saint Brendan's college travelled to the Goradische orphanage in Belarus for a weeks voluntary work. Lisa Gallagher, Leah Walker, Sophia Vagg, Eoin Mc Intyre ,Tracey Nallen, Stephen Gibbons, Eimear Kelly, Katelyn Lindsay, Tara Barrett, Eimear Gallagher, Meghan Kilker and Shauna Deane. This orphanage is home to 220 children and young adults between the ages of 4 and 25 years of age. While there the students helped with feeding washing and interacting with these children and young adults, many of whom are physically and mentally disabled. A large percentage are in cots at all times. The students have fundraised over ?10,000 since last October to cover the trip but also to spend on the children and orphanage while there. While this was a challenging trip for the students it was an experience that will have a very positive impact on their lives. They have showed tremendous dedication and determination in preparing for this trip doing presentations to their fellow students and their local Foroige club. They organised a donation box for supplies in the school and received huge support from students and teachers. A special word of thanks to their TY co-ordinator Miss O' Sullivan and school Principal Mr. Michael Walsh for their ongoing support and for facilitating the trip.

With the assistance of the Fiontar Chomhraic Fund, Erris Beo have purchased two new accommodation pods for the region. They are located in Eachléim (Ionad Deirbhile) and in Cornboy (Teach Greannaí), and will be operated by community groups. These unique accommodation units will provide an alternative way of exploring the hidden gems of Erris, by allowing visitors to cycle from one pod to the other, after an overnight stay. Erris Beo hopes to be able to purchase more pods for other parts of the region and extend this unusual ?Pedal & Pod?initiative across the destination of Erris.

Erris on Top!

McKennas?Guides published its 100 Best Places to Stay in Ireland, which included the lovely Léim Siar B&B in Blacksod (& also our neighbour, the Stella Maris hotel in Ballycastle). In The Irish Times in April, Ballycroy National Park was named as one of the top 10 parks in Ireland for activity & adventure. Last week, Red Bull named Erris as one of the Top 8 places to camp in Ireland. And this week, in The Irish Independent, Paul Clements named the Killala - Céide - Belderrig - Porturlin road as one of the top 10 Wild Atlantic way routes. As if we ever needed proof that Erris is, indeed, the best place in Ireland to go wild!

International Dark Sky Park

Comhghairdeas to all involved with Wild Nephin, Ballycroy National Park and the Mayo Dark Skies team - for their efforts in establishing the Mayo International Dark Sky Park, with Gold Tier status! This is an incredible achievement for everyone who worked so hard on the application to the International Dark Sky Association, and an amazing attraction for Erris! We look forward to welcoming many new astro-tourists to the region.

A huge thank you to our friends in Greene Farm Foods who awarded our member Maureen Rowland with a fantastic prize of a 2 night spa break at the Hodson Bay Hotel! They also shared their forever free tasters with our Belmullet class.

Eye Gar deni ng Ti ps Things to do in May: Start hardening off bedding plants. It is tempting to plant out summer bedding at this stage but it may be wise to hold off until at least the middle of the month as there is still a likelihood of late frost. Clear out spring bedding and fertilize the soil. Dead head spring bulbs Control pests and diseases especially slugs and snails. Prune spring flowering shrubs. Position supports around perennials that required staling e.g. Lupines Plant hanging baskets ( but keep in the glasshouse until the risk of frost has passed). Apply a slow release fertiliser to your pots and planted containers. Water newly planted fruit trees & bushes. Plant the main crop of potatoes. Early potatoes can be earthed up. Feed your lawn with a good law feed, weed and moss killer if you haven?t already done so.

Things to do in June: Plant out summer beddingwindow boxes, planted containers and hanging baskets can also be planted up. Check your hanging baskets and planted containers for watering. Feed your roses to encourage strong growth. Spray roses to control pests and diseases. Feed plants in borders if not already done. Thin hardy annuals and vegetables which have been sown. Mow lawns more frequently. Feed plants once a week. Stake herbaceous plants if you haven?t already done so. Deadhead flowers. Harvest fruit and vegetable crops as they come into season. Your glasshouse will need to be shaded so as to protect plants from scorching. Things to do in July: Water hanging baskets and planted containers. This will need to be done most days. They should also be fed about once a week. Deadhead flowers regularly. This will encourage more flowers. Plant autumn flowering bulbs. Keep roses sprayed to keep pests and disease at bay. Prune late spring flowering shrubs immediately after flowering. Plant out seedlings and rooted cuttings. Harvest fruit, vegetables and herbs. Feed perennials and shrubs with a granular fertiliser e.g. Growmore. Trim hedges. Continue to mow your lawn frequently. Clean paving slabs. Water newly planted shrubs if conditions are dry. Fences and exterior woodwork should be treated.

Union of Students in Ireland welcomes Scrapping of JobBridge and Commends Leo Varadkar on reducing exploitation in the workplace The Union of Students in Ireland has welcomed the scrapping of JobBridge and commended the Minister for Social Protection, Leo Varadkar, on rebalancing decency and reducing exploitation in the workplace. USI said there was no need for a system webbed with pernicious practises as a pivotal point for jobseekers anymore because unemployment figures were dropping. ?JobBridge has done horrendous damage to young people and their perception of acceptable work practises.? Kevin Donoghue, USI President, said. ?We welcome the scrapping of this system by Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar, and would like to congratulate him on this progressive step to rebalance decency and reduce exploitation in the workplace. The new system that replaces JobBridge must be of benefit to both the worker and the business ? a good wage for good work ? and must not be a new name on a structure replicated from JobBridge.? Donoghue said the new replacement scheme should see internship terms significantly reduced from the current six-to-nine month practises currently in place to one-to-two months. He also said there should be no expectation of overtime, unreasonable commutes, or unfair work practises in the new system. USI is urging the Minister to put strict monitoring into place in the new internship scheme where if a company is reported for poor or illegal work practises, they should be disallowed to continue taking on interns. ?Leo Varadkar should be praised for getting rid of a system that has destroyed employment prospects for many of our generation.? Donoghue said. ?JobBridge promotes unhealthy, unstable work schemes and exploits the time, energy and talent of young people. JobBridge is simply not the win-win programme it was pitched as. It?s a tax-payer scheme that allows businesses to breed inferiority complexes, poor working conditions and in turn, poor mental health such as anxiety, depression and despair in the youth.? JobBridge will be discontinued in September.
