Trip to Belarus

After months of preparation and fundraising for our upcoming trip, we left St. Brendan's College and headed to Shannon Airport at 2am on Sunday morning. We were all so nervous because we didn?t know what was ahead of us, yet we were all very excited for this life changing experience. We travelled out with our five leaders Tisha Gallagher, Sarah Paradise, Mick Croghan, Orla Gallagher and Leah Barry, whose patience was saint like and definitely tested during the week. The twelve students involved were Lisa Gallagher, Sophia Vagg, Éimear Gallagher, Shauna Deane, Tracy Nallen, Meghan Kilker, Eoin McItyre, Leah Walker, Stephan Gibbons, Tara Barrett, Eimear Kelly and Katelyn Lindsay. We spent the week in the Gorodische children?s orphanage, and it was nothing like we expected. The building was so much brighter and more cheerful than we thought it would be, there were paintings on almost every wall and beautiful play areas for every age group. We were however taken aback by some of the more serious disabilities that some of the children had. We witnessed heart breaking moments, but even that was eclipsed by the love and joy we were shown from the children. I don?t think we can put into words how amazing these people are, how easy it is to fall in love with them, these children and their selfless ways. They welcomed us without hesitation, and for every bit of happiness we put their way, they returned it tenfold. Although their lives are at a disadvantage, these kids constantly look on the bright side. They work seamlessly as a tight knit family, the older boys unfazed when they take have to care for the younger, less able bodied children, changing nappies and feeding without missing a stride. The older girls were so talented and independent; they have their own sewing workshop where they create so many embroidery items and sell them, while the older boys worked tirelessly in the farms and grounds all day. They all take such pride in their work and their home. I think the most extraordinary thing we noticed about these children is the warmth and love they had in their hearts that more than anything else shone through far brighter than any disability they might have had. More than anything else they craved love and attention; they adored being in photos and receiving hugs. Our week came to an end far too quickly for our liking, that Saturday night saying goodbye to them was the hardest part of that emotion-filled trip. Leaving them, even after only knowing them for a week was one of the hardest things we?d ever faced. Our hearts broke with every goodbye we said. Right now, we?re looking at pictures we have of them, memories of how truly inspiring they are and the knowledge that we will go back out there again. We went out there to help and they changed our lives completely, for that we owe them so much. We are so grateful to everyone who supported our fundraising, most especially the staff and students at our school St. Brendan?s College and the wonderful people of Erris who never shied away from sponsorship. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Tisha Gallagher, without whom this trip would have never have taken place. Her help both in the lead up to the trip and her support during them trying days will always be with us, and has helped cement our decision of returning again. Thank You.

AN APPEAL FROM BELMULLET TIDY TOWNS IT WAS A GREAT

ACHIEVEMENT FOR OUR TOWN TO WIN GOLD LAST YEAR. BUT like a restaurant winning a Michelin star it will not be easy to keep it. Our aim for this year is to retain the Gold Medal and the Gaeltacht Award and to be Ireland?s Tidiest Small Town! Our town looks very well indeed but the standards countrywide are incredibly high! Peeling paint, a rusty sign, a piece of litter carelessly thrown, cigarette butts or dog-fouling could lose our town those valuable few marks that make all the difference. Judging is not too far away! Ní neart go cur le chéile.

Congratulations go to these four girls for their awards from the Belmullet Martial Arts Academy

Broadhaven Bay Marine Mammal Monitoring Programme 2016 The Broadhaven Bay Marine Mammal Monitoring

Programme is run by UCC (University College Cork) and MaREI (Marine and Renewable Energy Ireland) and has been ongoing since 2002. Like all other years, the programme this season, involves land-based observations of marine mammals (whales, dolphins, porpoises and seals) passing through the waters of Broadhaven Bay and underwater acoustic data collection (using special recording units called CPODs). These recording devices listen for dolphin and porpoise echolocation clicks and record them year-round. When retrieved, these recordings allow us researchers to capture what day and what time the animals emitted the sound, providing a record of their presence in Broadhaven Bay. Our research team began surveying this season on the 1st of May and will be based on the Mullet Peninsula until September 31st. Our land-based monitoring sites are located on Erris Head and near Slugga Rock, on the north side of the bay. While we watch from the cliffs for signs of marine mammal activity, our four trusty underwater acoustic devices are recording marine mammal sounds throughout the bay, day and night! Broadhaven Bay is the perfect observation site for marine mammals The Team based in Erris as it opens onto the vast Atlantic Ocean, which has a lot of marine mammal activity. There are at least 25 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises recorded in Irish waters. Over the years, we have spotted 10 different species in and around Broadhaven Bay. This year so far, we have seen: common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, Risso dolphins, minke whales and humpback whales! We have had sightings of otters, harbour seals and grey seals as well. Our team this year includes six researchers from all over Europe and the US. The programme leader is Dr. Daniela Maldini, an Italo-American post-doctoral researcher who has been studying whales and dolphins around the world. Aoife Foley hails from Dublin but has been spending her time overseas in Australia and the Philippines studying humpback whales. Dr. Opheile Sagnol from France, spent the past several years in New Zealand studying habitat use of sperm whales. Etienne Pouplard also from France just returned from dolphin research in Nicaragua and has previously completed his master degree on dolphins in South Africa. Greece-born, Elena Akritopoulou completed a marine mammal main Wales and has worked with marine mammals in both the Mediterranean and in Welsh waters. Last but not least, Ireland?s own Marie Kearns, hailing from Kerry, is a seal biologist, who has just returned home from Scotland where she completed her master degree. The team will be hosting a variety of marine mammal talks and workshops in Belmullet over the summer, so please come along and say Dia duit! The team is also helping out with the All Ireland Whale Watch day, organised by the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group on August 27th on Downpatrick Head. If you want to come along and learn how to spot marine mammals in your local area, we will be glad to show you. Please contact Aoife Foley for more details 085 8276984. Fantastic news that the tidal pool in

Belmullet is listed in a new book on coastal swims. Swimming there is not for the 'faint hearted' given some of the weather conditions, but with the recent good weather, it is afantastic and healthy experience! ?We started swimming there in the mid-1960s,? wrote Eva Reilly. ?The parish priest, Archdeacon Feeney, complained about us from the altar, but we were brazen and chose to ignore him. He was in his 70s then and used to swim there himself. We made life difficult for him.? Eva became the area?s first water safety officer in the 1980s. The town wanted an indoor pool, but the council coffers were empty. Instead, inspired by one local?s holiday to Sweden, an outdoor tidal pool was built: it?s an uncanny, modernist concrete block that sticks out from the coastline like a tongue.

The event is being co-hosted by Bellacragher Boat Club and Cumann Bádóirí Acla with support from the Irish Multihull association (IMA) and the Irish Sailing Association (ISA). Three very busy days will commence on Friday 1st July as boats and crews have a shakedown cruise on the bay to familiarise themselves with new surroundings and take in the scenery. Tonragee pier (off the Mulranny to Achill Road past the WAY INN pub) will be the focal point of the event though most boats will launch from Achill Sound and Claggan Ballycroy. On Saturday Afternoon the public will get a chance to see Catamaran sailing and all its thrills and spills up close and personal as four races will take place on the bay between Tonragee, Achill and Ballycroy. Food refreshment and entertainment will be provided by Una and staff at Óstán Oileán Acla with transport arranged for boat crews and support teams. Sunday afternoon will entail a passage race from Tonragee to Achill Sound and back, a long distance race of endurance skill and pilotage. The Regatta is open to all class of catamaran and with support from other sailors around the country, it is hoped that more people will take part in a very exciting and healthy sport. Bellacragher Boat Club and Cumann Bádóirí Acla are committed to the principle of making sailing accessible and affordable for all and will be delighted to arrange a sailing experience for anyone interested in taking up the sport. Sponsorship is provided by Mayo County Council, Hobie Cat Europe and local businesses. All details can be found on http:/ / bellacragherboatclub.jimdo.com/ wild-atlantic-hobie-regatta-2016/ Including race application forms and local accommodation information

June Vegetable Garden Things to do: 1. Encourage runner beans to climb up their supports. They twist the other way from most other beans, climbing clockwise when viewed from above. 2. Hoe regularly to keep weeds at bay. 3. Earth up potatoes to protect the growing tubers. 4. Protect brassicas from pests 5. Any ground not being utilised for summer crops should be mulched or a suitable green manure sown. 6. Remove side shoots from your tomato plants (unless the plant is a bush variety) - this will direct more of the plants energy into growing fruit. 7. Continue to plant out courgettes, beans, pumpkins and other tender crops, and to sow them directly. A good start makes all the difference to how they will perform eventually. Things to do in July: Water hanging baskets and planted containers. This will need to be done most days. They should also be fed about once a week. Deadhead flowers regularly. This will encourage more flowers. Plant autumn flowering bulbs. Keep roses sprayed to keep pests and disease at bay. Prune late spring flowering shrubs immediately after flowering. Plant out seedlings and rooted cuttings. Harvest fruit, vegetables and herbs. Feed perennials and shrubs with a granular fertiliser e.g. Growmore. Trim hedges. Continue to mow your lawn frequently. Clean paving slabs. Water newly planted shrubs if conditions are dry. Fences and exterior woodwork should be treated.
