Bangor Area Reunion took place in
Bangor from 29th July till 5th August last. We were blessed with fine weather and great crowds attended all the outdoor events. The indoor events were a great success too with Nathan Carter and Michael English taking to the stage in the Kiltane G.A,A. complex. A fine venue for these two acts. We gratefully acknowledge the help we received from all our sponsors and volunteers who helped us throughout our week long reunion. It was great to see a community united to make a project work. The committee themselves did trojan work; it was almost impossible to attend every event but we did our best! The reunion book is still on sale in Bangor post office and also in The Kiltane Tavern @ ?20. A great read and the ideal Christmas gift! Thank you one and all for your support and encouragement. The reunion of 2016 will be remembered for a long time.

Wishing all our customers a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
It was a cool and breezy morning at Cross Lake but that didn't deter our 31 parkrunners for our 44th parkrun event. We had a massive 9 first timers so a big welcome to Conn Sullivan (who lead the field home), James, Joe and Eilish Ruane from Ballina parkrun, Serena Padden, Sharon and Donal Reilly, Katie Lally and young Padraig Keane! We hope you all enjoyed it and that we see you back soon. The conditions meant Personal Bests were hard to come by so well done to Sean Walsh, Stephen Bane, Vera Togher and Marie Brogan. A big shout out to our volunteers this week who had everything running like Clockwork - Caoimhe Keane, Gemma Wilson, Edward and Padraig Brogan and of course George "don't press the middle button" Geraghty. Next week we have a special Christmas parkrun and we desperately need volunteers so if you are free please get in touch! We have sent a message with Michael S to Santa to see if could pop in next Saturday morning so fingers crossed he can fit us into his busy schedule. Watch out for further details of our festive events during the week and did I mention we are really stuck for volunteers? See you all next Saturday morning.

Keep an Eye on Christmas in Erris pa g e 8 Mayo Golfer In World Top 6
It's a long way from Blacksod to Tokyo, and Mayo's Eddie Maguire has just returned from playing two major tournaments at the iconic Shin Rinkouen Golf complex in Saitama, Japan. Blind and visually impaired golfers from 25 countries teed it up for the Japanese Open which was to be a prelude to the World C'ship. Maguire's rounds of 69 and 68 would have been good enough to win many events, but provided him with a joint 4th finish of the 82 starters. A Hail Mary Moment The World C'ship was next on the agenda and this was when the big guns came out to play. Eddie's 1st round of 75 left him way down the field but a stern lecture from his guide, Fr Seamus Cullen, steadied the retired school teacher who shot 68 and best of the final day 66 to catapult himself up to a career best 6th in the World. This was largely due to a Hail Mary moment on the 16 when he hit a 5 wood 174 yards left to right over tall trees and water to 6 feet from the flag. The Hail Mary worked and the birdie putt was greeted with great relief by both of them. Two pars to finish gave him his best finish of the year. A Year To Remember It truly has been a year to remember for the former Mayo and Meath footballer who has also been confirmed as Team Ireland Captain for 2017. Eddie won the Austrian Open at his first attempt with a final round 69 in Vienna. He followed this by becoming the first ever golfer amateur or professional to win three successive Italian Open titles,at Barlassina GC outside Milan. High Hopes for 2017 Eddie's hopes for 2017 include the US Open in Arizona and the British Open. The Canadian Open in Vancouver is another major goal while the Irish Open at the Nuremore GC,Carrickmacross will also be highly sought after. Fox TV Sports have done a highlights package for the Japanese Open and World C'hip which should screen over the Xmas period. Pictured below are Eddie with his wife Joan taken at awards banquet in Tokyo with Dr Handa who sponsored the event and is the main sponsor of professional golf tournaments around the World.

Erris At hlet ics Club The club was founded in November 2015, and commenced membership in January 2016. For 2016, there were 151 members registered with the Club, in addition to the 12 committee/coaches who were all actively involved with the weekly training of members. Members range in age from 5yrs to 18yrs. In May 2016, 21 athletes competed in the U12-U19 categories of the Mayo Athletics Track & Field Championships and secured 28 medals. Also, 12 athletes from the club participated in the U9-U11 event and secured 15 medals. This was a huge achievement for the newly formed Club. In June, one member of the club progressed to the Connaught Athletics Track & Field Competition held at Sligo IT, representing Erris in the 800m event, and narrowly missed a placement for the national competition. On 21st August, 5 members from Erris AC were part of the Belmullet/Kilmore Community Games Boys U14 Relay Team, who represented Mayo and secured 4th place at the All Ireland Community Games Finals held at Athlone IT. A huge achievement for the team, who were trained by Erris AC coaches James Coyle and Colm Mangan. The Club also participated in the Cross Country competition in October this year. 24 members competed in the County Evens Competition at Ballinrobe Racecourse and and Unevens event in Beleek , with all members completing the long distances and members achieving high placing in various age groups. 4 members went on to compete in the Connaughts Cross Crountry events in Galway and Westport the club is delighted that Seamus Howard and Kea Lavelle both qualified to compete in the National Finals in Dundalk and Abbotstown. Both Seamus and Kea competed and completed their respective events and were placed in the top half of the field winners, which is a huge achievement at this national level. On 23rd September, the Erris National Schools Cross Country event was held in Faulmore, with 172 students from 10 Erris schools (3rd to 6th class) competing. Erris AC assisted in the event. For 2017, Erris AC will take full responsibility for organising and coordinating the event. We look forward to this challenge. While competition is very important and promoted within the Club, we encourage members to participate for enjoyment and fun. Among its activities for 2016, the Club did the 'Erris Park Run' with its members on two occasions and also hosted the 'Family Fun Day' as part of the Festival Week in Belmullet. We encourage members to 'Compete & Complete', whether it is at training or a competitive event. Erris AC is indebted to Michael Walsh and St Brendans College, who have provided their sports-hall, football field and sports equipment to the club. We would not have been in a position to bring the Club to its current level of success without the support and generosity of St Brendan's College. Due to the large number of members training, there were 3 weekly sessions held. Junior Infants to 2nd Class, 3rd & 4th Class and 5th Class plus. The older group trained at Kilmore Sports Field, under lights. Erris AC wish to acknowledge their gratitude to Kilmore Sports Field Development for the use of their facilities. Belmullet GAA have also supported Erris AC by providing their facilities for training of the older group, while lights were available. We are thankful for this and also wish to acknowledge Belmullet GAA for the use of their clubhouse facilities for training and meetings. Erris Utd Soccer Club have also confirmed availability of their facilities to Erris AC if needed at any stage. We would like to acknowledge and thank Erris Utd. Aras Inis Gluaire also made their facilities available for registration of the Club, many thanks for this facility. Erris AC is continually open to all proposals for the development of an athletics track for the Erris area. While the Club is attaining success in its current format, the provision of an athletic track would provide the members and the Erris area with an invaluable amenity for all ages and further encourage and enhance the development of our athletes. Some of our coaches have commenced their Coaching Training Programme. It is hoped that the Club will facilitate and develop training of coaches to the maximum levels. In January 2017, the club hopes to extend to developing the Senior "THOUGHT TO 5k" section, with "Thought to 5k" event. A We at Erris Athletic Club know how hard it can be for some people to take the big step into getting into fitness. We also know that we can help people to programme aimed at complete achieve their dreams once they have a willingness to do so. beginners who always wanted to run Erris AC are running a thought to 5k for all beginner runners. Well done to Leah Walker, Olivia Murray and Tracey Nallen of St Brendan's College who won awards in the Soroptimist Public Speaking competition Revenue is advising shoppers to be wary. Some deals really are just too good to be true, and what looks like an attractive offer can ultimately be an expensive or even a dangerous, mistake. The important things to remember are: Online Shopping has Tax and Duty Implications Whether your purchases originate outside the EU or in another EU Member State, online shopping can have tax and duty implications, and you may be liable for tax and duty on your online purchases when your goods arrive. All goods from non-EU Member States are liable to tax and duty on arrival here. Last year, Revenue officers in postal depots nationwide applied charges to more than 70,000, adding an average ?33 in tax and duty per parcel. Alcohol or tobacco products bought online or by mail order are liable to tax and duty on arrival in the State, whether they originate in another EU Member State, or outside the EU. A case of wine for sale online at ?60 might look like a great deal. However, if the price is low, tax and duty have probably not been paid and Revenue may seize the wine on arrival. You are liable for the tax and duty. Excise duty and VAT on an average case of 12 bottles of wine originating in another EU country will add more than ?60 bringing the price you actually pay to over ?120. Counterfeit Goods are Illegal and can be Dangerous The counterfeit trade operates in the shadow economy evading tax, translating into lost revenue for legitimate businesses and their employees, loss of jobs, and often funding organised criminal gangs. There are no health and safety standards in the counterfeit business, so these fake products are often unsafe, or even dangerous. Revenue seizes counterfeit goods at import or export. This means that you will lose your goods and your money, and it?s very unlikely that a seller who trades in fake goods will refund your loss. In short, that advice is to be careful ? if a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is! Confidential Free Phone Number If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding the smuggling or sale of illicit alcohol, tobacco products, or counterfeit goods they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295.

pa g e 16 Thinking of getting a new puppy? Here is what you need to know
Owning a puppy is an expensive and long term commitment and unfortunately there are far too many internet adverts that encourage you to buy without doing your research. A photo of a cute puppy with as little information as possible is geared to encourage impulse buying. Having a happy, playful puppy is a very enjoyable experience but it is also a big commitment and demanding in time, money and veterinary care. Remember, a cute fluffy puppy will grow into a dog and will be with you for the next 10 to 15 years or more. If you have carefully considered all that is involved in having a pet and decided to get the right puppy for you and your circumstances, here are some suggestions to consider. It is important when getting any new pet that you choose carefully and that it is an informed decision with the entire family.
Where t o get your new puppy? The ISPCA recommends adopting a puppy from your local rescue centre or dog pound. There are so many pets looking for responsible homes where they will be happy and cared for, for the rest of their lives. All dogs and puppies adopted from the ISPCA Centres are health checked, parasite treated, vaccinated, microchipped and neutered/spayed when old enough. ISPCA staff have the expertise to assist with any questions you have about getting a new dog or puppy and will try to match you with the best pet for your household. Before you decide on your new best friend, you should consider your lifestyle and the amount of time spent at home as dogs and puppies need daily companionship and exercise which also helps prevent behavioural problems. If you really feel you want to buy a pedigree puppy, please do some research before you buy any pet. Different breeds have different requirements and temperaments. First ask your veterinary practitioner if they know any reputable breeders or contact the Irish Kennel Club for advice. The Irish Kennel Club can also direct you to breed rescue organisations. Check with the Kennel Club that the breeder is an Irish Kennel Club Assured Breeder before purchasing a puppy. The IKC will be able to point you in the right direction if you really want a specific breed. Continued on p.17...

Keep an Eye on What's On Remember, the likely lifetime cost of owning a dog ranges from ?15,000 to ?23,000 depending on the size of the dog. This excludes veterinary costs if your pet becomes sick or injured, so this average cost could be even higher. Whether you are looking for a pug, husky, Jack Russell terrier, or cocker spaniel, you should consider each breeds own requirements and potential veterinary issues. Can you afford the lifetime costs of owning a dog? Dogs and puppies like all animals, have five essential needs to be healthy and happy; these are commonly known as ?The Five Freedoms?. Under the Animal Health & Welfare Act of 2013, and equivalent legislation in Northern Ireland, all owners need to provide these five things for the pets they keep: Environment ? a suitable living environmentDiet ? a suitable dietBehaviour ? to be able to behave normallyCompanionship ? to have appropriate companionshipHealth ? to be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease For more information, please contact the ISPCA National Animal Centre on 043 33 25035, email info@ispca.ie.

Keep an Eye on Erris 'Atlantic' premier was shown for the first time on RTE1. Well worth a watch. Seven facts about Ireland's rich fisheries resources and the reality of how little the people of Ireland benefit from them. 1. Ireland's Economic Exclusion Zone, which extends up to 370km into the Atlantic Ocean, covers an area five times the size of the island of Ireland. This area makes up 16% of the seas of European Union. 2. Under international law Ireland has exclusive rights to all of the fish stocks within its Economic Exclusion Zone. This right was given up by the Twenty-Six County state when it joined the EU. As a result some of the richest fishing grounds in Europe were opened up to the modern fishing fleets of France, Spain, Britain and the other EU countries. 3. The Twenty-Six County government estimates that 1,200,000 (1.2m) tonnes of fish are caught in the seas around Ireland each year. There are no exact figures because the government and the EU refuse to produce statistics based on the Irish Economic Exclusion Zone. The total economic value of this catch, when processing and end use value is taken into account, is conservatively estimated at ?5,000,000,000 (5bn) per year. 4. An estimated 75% of all fish caught in Irish seas are caught by non-Irish fishing boats. In other words the Irish fishing fleet is allowed just 25% of the 1.2 million tonnes of fish that are caught in Irish waters each year. 5. The underdevelopment of the Irish fishing industry has hit isolated rural communities very hard, particularly along the West Coast and in Gaelteacht areas where other sources of employment are limited. Without work people are left with little option to move to the cities or emigrate to other countries. 6. Other comparable non-EU countries like Norway and Iceland have taken much better advantage of their fish resources, developing not only vibrant fishing fleets but also major spin-off industries in areas such as food processing and boat building. 7. éirígí believes that the Irish people as a whole should be the primary beneficiaries of Ireland's rich fishing grounds. We believe that a properly developed and managed fishing industry could contribute billions of euros annually to the economy and provide much needed employment in isolated rural communities. Such a developed fishing sector would help provide much needed balance in an economy that is currently overly reliant on US multinationals. Discovered on Social media....

About the Credit Union in Ireland The Irish credit union movement was founded as a result of the efforts of three dynamic, pioneering and entrepreneurial people, namely Nora Herlihy, from Ballydesmond, a teacher based in Dublin; Sean Forde, an employee of Peter Kennedy Bakers, Dublin; and SĂŠamus P. MacEoin, from Kilkenny, a Civil Servant working in Dublin. In Dublin in the 1950's, they witnessed the effects of high unemployment: sickness, malnutrition, money-lending, hunger, poor clothing, poor housing, and inevitably, emigration of one parent or of the whole family. In addition, state unemployment benefits were low and did not last indefinitely leaving many families in abject poverty. The founders recognised the root of the problem as lying in the scare availability and poor management of money and resolved to identify a system that would allow people to gain more control over their finances.

What is a Credit Union? A credit union is a group of people who save together and lend to each other at a fair and reasonable rate of interest. Credit unions offer members the chance to have control over their own finances by making their own savings work for them. Regular savings form a common pool of money, which in turn provides many benefits for members. Each credit union is owned by people like you, the members, who both save with, and borrow from it. As a member, you will receive a dividend, if declared, on your savings and you have access to loans at fair and reasonable rates.

The bank officials are from first year to TY and we're chosen after an interview process with Mr Keith Higgins. They are pictured with Mr Holmes and Miss Moran. The school bank is open every Wednesday until the end of the school year.
Keep an Eye on Erris Schools National Science Week in St Brendan?s College As part of national science weeks, St Brendan's College was visited by RTE's Bug Doctor and all Junior Cert students had hands-on physics workshops. As part of the bug doctor?s visit, students got to meet and touch a series of exotic and sometimes dangerous animals. The students were captivated by the hugely impressive bug doctor ? also known as Dr Dugon, from NUIG's Zoology Department - who showed the students what is and isn't dangerous in the animal kingdom. The stick insects and leaf insects provided amazing examples of mimicry and camouflage, while Dr Dugon also debunked some myths about giant cockroaches and tarantulas. Dr Dugon also introduced students to the all-time favourites: the snakes and the lizards. Students found out if snakes really were slimy and cold after being allowed to hold one themselves. The hour long presentations, which were given to all first, second and third year classes, were an exciting introduction to evolution and biodiversity using exotic creatures, while the students asked an amazing number of intelligent questions from a world-renowned specialist in reptiles and venomous animals. Dr Dugon also told about the amazing work he's currently engaged in to find multiple uses in medicine - especially in cancer treatment - for the huge variety of venoms found in all these amazing animals. The same set of lucky students also got to partake in physics and rocket making workshops with Declan Holmes, a product engineer for Intel Ireland and an experimental physicist. In the hands-on science show students participated in activities and demonstrations on flight, pressure, density, waves, light, sound and electricity. The rocket workshop was a huge hit. Its aim it was to raise interest in science by showing students the advantage of working in a team to design the best rocket possible. The students got to build and launch water rockets to simulate a realistic rocket launch experience.
