Erris parkrun keeps on running? ? .. and walking! Erris parkrun has been one of the success stories of the year as it continues to grow attracting locals and visitors every Saturday morning at Cross Lake. Erris Eye sat down with the Event Director for Erris parkrun, Padraig Brogan, to discuss all things parkrun and how it has become such a huge success not just locally but worldwide. Erris Eye: So tell us a little about the background to parkrun. Padraig: The first ever parkrun event was in Bushy park, Teddington, UK, where 13 people got together on 2 October 2004. The first parkrun in the Republic of Ireland started in Malahide Demense Castle and Gardens on the 10th November 2012 and since then it has spread to 55 locations across the island of Ireland and continues to grow at pace. Mayo currently has 4 parkrun locations at Westport, Ballina, Castlebar and Erris with Claremorris due to join the fold shortly Erris Eye: And what does the whole parkrun concept involve? Is it a race? Padraig: No it?s not a race or competitive and despite the fact that ?run? is part of the name it?s not just for runners ? walkers are especially welcome to all parkrun events! It?s all still based on the simple, basic principles formed from the start: weekly, free, 5km, for everyone, forever. It?s about getting out there, being active, meeting people and having fun. It?s for people of all ages and of all levels of fitness. What has been most pleasing to us at Erris parkrun is the number of families who participate and spend this great quality time together! Erris Eye: Sounds good! Where and when does it take place? Padraig: Erris parkrun, in line with other parkruns throughout the country takes place at 9.30am sharp every Saturday morning. I know what you are thinking ? is that not too early on a Saturday morning when you?d want to have a lie in?! To be honest I?d have thought that in the beginning too but once you are up and have your 5k done, whether you run or walk it, you are set up for the day and as it?s only 11am you have the full day ahead of you. We have a beautiful parkrun course at Cross Lake, Binghamstown and many of our parkrun tourists remark on the beauty of the scenery. We needed a course with little or no traffic for safety reasons and this is ideal. Erris Eye: So what do I need to join and how much is it going to cost me? Padraig: It?s completely free! The only thing you need to do is bring your barcode with you each Saturday morning once you have registered. When you have completed your parkrun, always at your own pace, your barcode and finish token are scanned by our volunteers and later on you will receive an individual email with your time. If you are not registered don?t worry, you can still come along any Saturday morning. Erris Eye: You mentioned volunteers - who are they and what do they do? Padraig: parkrun is a community event run by volunteers mainly drawn from, but not exclusively, from the parkrun participants. For each event there is a run director, 2 volunteers on stopwatches, a volunteer to hand out the finish tokens as people cross the line and volunteers who scan the barcodes and the finish tokens which, when all is uploaded to the computer, will give the participants their times. We also have a new volunteer role of Tail Runner who will support an encourage participants especially the walkers and they will be the last to finish so that nobody who attends parkrun will be left behind no matter how ?slow? they themselves think they may be. And of course we now have a new ?drinks station? at the finish line for everyone to enjoy a hot cuppa and a chat. While getting out and active is part of parkrun the social side is also a major element. Erris Eye: You?ve sold it to me! What do I need to do next? Padraig Well you can register on www.parkrun.ie/register which will enable you to print your barcode and participate in any parkrun anywhere in the world. Further details on Erris parkrun are available on www.parkrun.ie/erris or on the Erris parkrun Facebook page or contact me on 087-7978821 for any additional information. Erris Eye: I believe you have a certain milestone coming up. Tell me about it. Padraig: Erris parkrun commenced on 20th February 2016 due in part to John Conmy?s participation in Operation Transformation. Since then we have had 48 events every Saturday plus New Years day which has seen 1597 persons cover an astonishing 7,985 kilometers! On 18th February 2017 we will be celebrating our First Anniversary with a number of different events during the course of that weekend so watch this space. But between then and now we are encouraging everyone who is following the Operation Transformation programme to join us every Saturday morning at 9.30am where our OT Ambassadors Rachel and Padraig will be on hand to support them! Finally on behalf of Erris parkrun I would like to thank the Cross Loop Walks Committee and the landowners for their help and support, to Michael S Togher for creating our drinks station at the finish line, to Jackie and Patricia Coyle of Coyles Gala for sponsoring the cups, to Belmullet Tidy Towns for their kind sponsorship of the flasks, to Mayo Sports Partnership and Mayo County Council for their support and to you at Erris Eye for covering our events over the past few months. And of course to each and every person who has participated in or volunteered at Erris parkrun over the past 11 months and have made it such a fantastic community event, we are extremely grateful. To those who have yet to join there is a special parkrun welcome waiting for you every Saturday morning at 9.30am at Cross Lake #loveparkrun #dfyb (Don?t forget your barcode!)

Patricia Byrne tells the story of a Norwegian whaling station off the Mayo coast in 1908-1914, which was captured for posterity in an early film documentary. On 9 March 1908, a ship belonging to the Aranmore Whaling Company landed a consignment of timber at Rusheen Island, a small tidal islet off the island of Inishkea South in north-west Mayo. The company was Norwegian-owned but its name was derived from earlier whaling activities in County Donegal. Over the following days and weeks, the startled islanders of Inishkea watched as the infrastructure of the whaling station took shape before their eyes: a 400 ft pier, wooden slipway, cooperage, forge, steam winches, bone crunching mill, steam boilers, sheds and an administration building. Inishkea had become industrialised. In 1896, the Norwegian Government had restricted whaling during certain parts of the year as a result of lobbying from the fishing industry that considered whaling harmful to their operations. This provided an opportunity for Ireland?s Local Government Board to encourage the Norwegian whalers to establish stations on Ireland?s west coast and the Congested Districts Board sold Rusheen to the whaling company for £100. The Norwegians lived and socialised mainly on the nearby ships, coming ashore occasionally to visit the pubs on Inishkea North and South Islands. Before their eyes: a 400 ft pier, wooden slipway, cooperage, forge, steam winches, bone crunching mill, steam boilers, sheds and an administration building. Inishkea had become industrialised. Once the station was operational, another strange sight greeted the islanders when a film crew arrived and proceeded to capture the whaling activity for posterity in a film entitled Whaling Afloat and Ashore. The film?s Director, Robert Paul (1869-1943), was a pioneer of the British film industry in its formative years. Paul?s business was in electrical instrument making and in 1894 he manufactured replicas of Edison?s Kinetoscope, the first widely diffused motion picture device. Over the next 15 years Robert Paul?s film crews produced up to 1,000 titles, including the colourful pageantry of Queen Victoria?s diamond jubilee celebrations in 1897. Whaling Afloat and Ashore (1908*) is thought to be the last of Robert Paul?s films to survive for he quitted the business in 1910 and continued to work on various engineering projects. The film may have had a promotional basis as commercial whaling was a lucrative business at the time and there was also an emerging genre of showing the intricate detail of industrial production processes. The film opens on a whaling ship with a harpoonist successfully shooting a whale which is towed to the Rusheen station and hauled up the slipway. The blubber is stripped away, cut into pieces and fed into large steam boilers for oil extraction. The meat was dried to make ?guano?or artificial manure. An intriguing sequence shows the Inishkea and Norwegian whalers relaxing together during their work breaks. They dance, wrestle on their backs with their legs, hold sack races and undergo various trials of strength, occasionally glancing at the camera with self-conscious grins. In August 1909 the islanders went on strike and succeeded in having their wages increased to £1 per week.
Leah Walker, Olivia Murray and Tracey Nallen who participated in The Soroptimist International Public Speaking in Ballina. Congratulations to Tracey Nallen who will compete in the Regional Finals in the New Year.
Between 20 and 40 islanders were employed during the station?s short existence when Inishkea South enjoyed a period of unusual prosperity. Some of the islanders became highly skilled at the whaling work, including a young man named Pat O?Reilly who was particularly adept in the use of the four and a half foot blubber knife. But there were also tensions with the South Islanders refusing to allow North Inishkea workers to be employed at the station. In August 1909 the islanders went on strike and succeeded in having their wages increased to £1 per week. There was, however, continued opposition to the whaling station with repeated claims that it was ruining the fishing industry locally and fouling the air with its stench. Profits declined in 1910 due to bad weather conditions and tighter profit margins. The deterioration continued and by 1914 the station equipment had been dismantled.

Erris Emigrants Support the Irish Wheelchair Association
The Irish Wheelchair Association provide extensive services for people with disabilities and the elderly all over Erris. Over 109 people avail of these services on a weekly basis, and in the coming weeks seven people with disabilities will be moving into the newly constructed Independent living houses in Logmore, giving them the opportunity to live in their own home in their own community. Erris is a community like no other, as an organisation we need to fundraise to continue to sustain and expand services in Erris. The Erris Branch of IWA recently travelled to London and Leeds to attend two fundraising dances organised by our exiles in the UK. On the 15th of October a fundraising dance was held in St Anthony?s catholic Club Edgware, organised by Mr Sean Ruddy and Martin Ruddy Muingmore and London, and supported by Dermot Padden, Willie Coyle, Chris Cronin, John Paul Reilly, John Barrett, Vincent Heffron, and Pat Walsh. Erris natives gathered from all parts of London on the night and music was provided by Mr Martin Ruddy and his band. A large group travelled from Erris to meet family and support the event. It was a wonderful night and ?9,275 was raised on the night. The Erris Branch of IWA wish to thank the organising committee who looked after the visiting group so well and put so much effort into the night. We also wish to thank everyone who sponsored prizes on the night. The Erris Branch of IWA travelled to Leeds Irish Centre on the 5th of November last year to attend a fundraising dance organised by Eddie and Mary Lavelle Leeds. Music was provided by Tommy and Kathleen of the Duets. Again the dance was very well supported by Erris emigrants from all over Leeds and a great night was had by all. ?7,100 was raised and the Erris Branch of IWA wishes to thank Eddie and Mary Lavelle, Tommy and Kathleen Moran of the Duets, and everyone who donated so generously. All funds raised from these fundraisers will go towards services in Erris.
