group would like to thank everybody who contributed to their annual bucket collection in Erris on Holy Thursday last. All funds collected will go towards the hosting of 13 orphans from Belarus in Erris in July next. Also a huge thank you to all the people who donated humanatarian aid to our appeal. The response was amazing as always. The aid was sorted and loaded onto our truck this weekend and will leave for Belarus next week where it will be distributed to orphanages, hospitals, old folks homes, schools and homes in the villages where it will make a huge difference to the lives of the recipients.

If you have a medical card, there is a charge for prescribed medicines and other items that you get on prescription from pharmacies. The prescription charge is €2.50 for each item that is dispensed to you under the medical card scheme, up to a maximum of €25 per month per person or family. From 1 March 2017, the prescription charge for medical card holders over the age of 70 will be reduced to €2 per item and the monthly maximum will be reduced to €20. Question - I care full-time for a relative with a disability and I have applied for Carer’s Allowance. Although I am not yet aged 66 would I be entitled to a free travel pass, if I qualify for this allowance? Answer (March 2017) Everyone aged 66 and over living permanently in the State is entitled to the Free Travel Scheme. If you are under age 66 and registered for a Public Services Card, you will be awarded free travel with your Carer’s Allowance. You will be issued with a new Public Services Card which will also be your Free Travel Card. The card will have “F-T” printed in a yellow octagon in the top left-hand corner. If you have not yet registered for the Public Services Card, you will be asked to register before your Free Travel Card issues to you. The Public Services Card allows people to access a range of government services and payments and it will eventually replace the Free Travel Pass. In order to keep your entitlement to Free Travel, you must register for the Public Services Card when requested to do so by the Department of Social Protection. Your entitlement to Free Travel will be disallowed or withdrawn if you don’t register. You must show your Public Services Card to the travel operator when you are travelling on public transport. (In some cases you may be asked to scan your Public Services Card. However, not all transport operators have this facility.) Note that people under 66 getting PRSIbased Carer’s Benefit are not entitled to a Free Travel Card. If you are living with the person you care for, you may also be entitled to the Household Benefits Package, which includes an electricity or gas allowance as well as a free TV licence. Only one person in a household can qualify for the package at any time.

Celebrate the ‘Children of Lír’ Legend in Belmullet
The weekend of May 26 – 28 marks the third year of the wonderfully unique Children of Lír Festival in Belmullet, Co. Mayo, which celebrates the area’s connection with the world-famous Clann Lír legend. The colourful Wild Atlantic Way town of Belmullet is the largest in Erris, an area that has been voted ‘the best place to go wild in Ireland!’ (The Irish Times) This extraordinary family festival sees events and activities taking place in towns & villages all over the Mullet Peninsula and on islands off the coast! Come to the west coast and celebrate the Children of Lír Festival live the local legend through music, walks, food, crafts and water adventures! This year’s festival includes: a boat trip to the legendary, deserted island of Inis Gluaire, where the Children of Lír are said to be buried; beautiful theatre & dance performances; an evening of food & folklore; children’s movies in the local auditorium; familyfriendly walks (one with panoramic views of Inis Gluaire island); arts & crafts workshops; and much more! Its location as one of the most westerly points in Europe (next stop New York!) means that the Belmullet region is an unspoilt destination, with no less than four lighthouses in the region! At the four corners of the barony of Erris, you’ll find: the Neolithic Céide Fields (older than the pyramids), the vast landscape of Ballycroy National Park, the towering cliffs of Benwee Head (higher than the cliffs of Moher), and the deserted islands of Inis Gé and Inis Gluaire. One of the festival organisers, Rosaleen Bond, says, “The dramatic coastal scenery and rich natural scenic beauty around Belmullet & Erris provide a charming background for the Children of Lír Festival. The rich history of this legend is visible everywhere here and the locals are very proud of it. We look forward to celebrating the Children of Lír story with children and families from all over Ireland and abroad!” Keep up to date by following the festival on Facebook (@childrenoflirfestival) or Twitter (@clannlirfest)! A GALA BANQUET WILL BE HELD IN THE BROADHAVEN BAY HOTEL ON SUNDAY, 30 APRIL @ 8PM IN HONOUR OF THE ALL-IRELAND WINNING Gaelic Football team from Our Lady's Secondary School. All welcome. Tickets €25 available from: Cuffes, Careys, An Builín Blasta, Carabines, Healy's Barnatra and the school.

TIERNAN GILL, GILL GROUP, CHURCH ROAD,
BALLINA, CO MAYO PHONE (096) 73030 www.gillgroup.ie Irish citizens may now renew their passports
online wherever they are in the world, Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan has announced. The online passport application service will work for both passport books and cards, and is available to adult citizens over 18 who already have a passport. Mr Flanagan said it was “one of the most significant innovations in customer service that this department has delivered over the past 15 years”. “This new and exciting development brings considerable benefits for Irish citizens in terms of turnaround times, convenience and security,” he said. The service has a target turnaround time of 10 working days plus postage wherever in the world the applicant is based. Applicants will have the choice of taking their own photos or they may attend one of 150 digital ‘Photo Me’ booths located in shopping centres or other venues throughout the State. The Minister said the streamlined service will allow applicants the convenience of submitting information, including photographs, digitally, and will avoid the need for witnessing of forms and the printing of photographs.
