6 Erris FM wins top award at Radio Oscars! Erris FM has won a Distinction Award at this year's CRAOL Community Radio Achievement Award ceremony held recently in The Falls Hotel, Ennistymon, Co. Clare. In the programme entitled 'From Yellow Star to Pop Star' , Dorit Oliver Wolff tells her remarkable story to Ann - Marie Healy, who is the presenter of the Erris FM programme 'Community Matters'. Dorit's story tells how she saw the Holocaust as a five year old Jewish girl living for years in hiding, fearing the Nazi soldiers who were determined to kill every Jew. Tense, moving and inspirational - her remarkable story takes the listener through fear and horror to freedom and joy. It shows how the bravery and fortitude of one little Jewish girl helped her survive the Holocaust and become a star! This award is also a great achievement for AnnMarie, as the CRAOL Judges remarked “This is a programme which merits a wide audience and for which the Presenter showed initiative and dedication, with the support of a good team, in widening programme output.”, and for Tony Conway who has now produced six award-winning programmes for Erris FM. You can hear the programme on Mixcloud at https://www.mixcloud.com/errisfm/from-yellow-starto-pop-star-how-a-young-girl-survived-the-ho locaust-became-a-singing-sensation/ Erris FM broadcasts on 90.8 FM every Friday & Saturday. A CHANCE IN A MILLION MEETING AT TURAS SIAR LANGUAGE AND CULTURE RESEARCH AND GENEALOGY CENTRE This amazing story began in Belmullet at Fairview B & B on Wednesday 12th July 2017, when a Scottish lady who was staying there asked the owners where she could get information about her ancestors who were from the general Erris area. Elizabeth the Scottish lady was told to head to Leim Siar Blacksod and talk with Hannah Quigley, the owner. When she arrived at Leim Siar there was another lady from USA sitting reading a book hadn’t much else to do for the day, her son had gone off surfing. These two ladies had never met in their lives until that afternoon and so Hannah phoned us up (Turas Siar) and asked us would it be alright if they came to see us and have a chat with us so it was arranged that they would be here just after 3pm. They came into our centre, Turas Siar and had a look around and then Jean from USA sat with Pap and chatted about her family whilst Liz sat down with Kathryn and talked about her family. After a while it turns out that these two ladies are related to each other and also related to Pap. They spent a couple of hours with us and Liz the Scottish lady came back to Turas Siar the next day to purchase a book. The connection between these two ladies is through the Cawley and Reilly families, Cawley’s from Inishkea and Reilly’s originally from Newtown / Peadar Whiley and Tone Reilly’s.

Sonas Nursing Home Tí Aire would like to convey their gratitude to all those who contributed to their fundraising event for Killian Ginnelly & Family which was held in the Talbot Hotel on the 19th May. A big thank you to all for their generous donations on the night, to those who gave Spot Prizes which were raffled off on the night, to the musicians for the lively entertainment and to the staff of Ti Aire and its sister nursing homes for organising the event. A total of €4500 was raised, which has been presented to Killian & Samantha. They were overwhelmed with the kindness and support they have received and have expressed a sincere thank you to all. Again thank you for supporting the fundraiser.

SEAN FOCAL Is breá an ní an óige ach ní thagann sí faoi dhó. Youth is a fine thing but it does not come twice A very warm was welcome extended to the ten different nationalities of clergy from Devine Word School of English class, Maynooth when recently visiting Kilcommon Erris Parish. They're guide was Michael

Walsh from Kerry of the Divine Word English Class Maynooth. He rang during the week to say they were staying in Kilcommon Hostel and delighted to concelebrate mass Sunday morning. They were 11 Priests altogether, one was just recently ordained last week in Dublin. They were from Russia, Slovenia, France, Germany, Italy, Australia and America. There were two nuns of the Divine Word with them and several students which made up the choir, 23 in all. The Sunday morning congregation had a real treat with beautiful singing and 12 priests concelebrating mass together. The group really enjoyed Kilcommon and traveled to Killgalligan and see the beautiful coastline here in the parish. Pictured at Our Lady, Star of the Sea church Cornboy.

12 “They Chose Me Outa Six” Erris FM Community Radio and Áras Inis Gluaire, the Arts Centre for Erris, will launch a new Radio Programme & CD on Friday, 11th August at 7.00 pm. “They Chose Me Outa Six” tells the story of Manchester man, Pat Conway, who was adopted by a childless Erris couple in the 1950s and spent his early life in Glencastle, Co Mayo, before emigrating to Britain and making his permanent home there. Born to a single mother in Belfast in 1944, Pat spent the first five years of his life in a Dublin orphanage. It was there, in 1949, that he was “chosen” by his adoptive parents to become part of their family in Glencastle in North Mayo. The journey to Mayo was his first experience of life in the country and his new surroundings provided a whole new world to explore. Not all of these new experiences were positive, however. He recalls his mainly negative memories of school, his difficulties in learning and the long hours of labour on the farm. At the age of thirteen, formal schooling came to an end when he joined the “tatie hokers” to work in Scotland, picking potatoes. He would make a number of trips to Scotland before, eventually, travelling to Birmingham, and other parts of Britain, to work on the construction sites. Whilst working in England, Pat’s adoptive parents died within a short period of each other. He recalls the sense of loss, at the time, as he left Glencastle, after the funerals, to face life, once more,on his own. The latter part of Pat’s story recalls his on-going efforts to trace his birth-mother and his disappointment at “missing her” by just two years. Pat Conway has continued to visit Erris, his “home place”, each year and he will be on hand on the evening at the launch of “They Chose Me Outa Six”, an Erris FM Radio documentary, produced by Tony Conway and presented by Tom McAndrew. The launch is open to the public and all are welcome at Áras Inis Gluaire in Belmullet.

1967 - 2017

TONE STREET, BALLINA, CO. MAYO.

TEL: 096 21085 Belmullet Foróige Club has been running for the past three years, the club is open to young people in Erris aged 12-16 years and attending secondary school. We meet every Friday evening from 6.00pm-7.30pmclub nights consist of a variety of activities, planning for community projects, club outings & Foróige events. It offers young people an opportunity to socialise outside school in a safe environment. It also enhances their interests, confidence, skills and abilities. They learn and practice decision making, organisation, leadership, all skills that will stand to them into the future. Foróige Clubs are run by young people with the support of adult Club Leaders; the club has a youth committee made up of elected officers who hold meetings throughout the year to make decisions about the club, plan club nights and outings and work on club projects. We’ve had a really busy year this year with club activities, mannequin challenges, visitors to the club, discos, fundraising and talent shows. We are lucky to have such a great group of young people who want to get involved in their community and help out where they can. Over this club year members organised a fundraising Bake Sale with the proceeds going to the Erris outreach service of Mindspace Mayo; they helped the Irish Wheelchair Centre with their annual Angel Day Campaign, and also helped with Belmullet’s first ever Monster March. At Christmas a huge effort was made by members putting together a total of 35 boxes as part of the Christmas Homeless Shoebox Appeal. There are lots of local, regional and national events & activities for club members to get involved in; this year we attended club discos held throughout the county, the Regional Youth Conference, Foróige’s Got Talent, the Prom Ball and Band on the Strand. Our Foróige’s Got Talent Act was made up of 20 of our very talented members who performed a modern song as Gaeilge, they were fantastic on the night and represented Erris exceptionally well. We also hosted our own club disco, which took place in the Kiltane GAA Complex. Other local activities included a day rowing with the Tallaghan Bay Rowing Club and an adventure filled day at Erris Head with Wavesweeper. We finished up the club year with a trip to Dublin, attending two activity centres where members went trampolining & did a range of team building activities. We are a relatively new club but learning and growing each year. This year we had 45 young people registered with us and we also have a waiting list for September. In order to keep the club going and run it each week, we need volunteers, without the support of adults & parents in the community the club can’t operate or be the best it can be for our young people. If you would like to get involved as a leader or as a member contact Leanne at lee. bar23@gmail.com/ 086-3313882. The club wouldn’t be able to run without the support, kindness and goodwill of so many individuals, groups and organisations in Erris, we are very grateful to them and thank them for all their support. Finally thank you to the leaders who lend their time & effort to the club each week and to our members for always keeping it fun and interesting! Find us on Facebook @belmulletforoige for club information and updates #WeareForoige.
