Ballycroy National Park
The Visitor Centre is open 7 days a week until 30th September from 10.00 am until 5.30 pm It is located in the village of Ballycroy on the N59 road between Mulranny and Bangor.
Ballycroy National Park was established in November 1998, it is Ireland’s sixth National Park and is located on the Western seaboard in Northwest Mayo. It comprises of 11,000 hectares of Atlantic blanket bog and mountainous terrain, covering a vast uninhabited and unspoilt wilderness dominated by the Nephin Beg mountain range. Between Nephin beg and Slieve Carr, at 721metres above sea level, the highest mountain in the range, lie the Scardaun Loughs. To the west of the mountains is the Owenduff bog. This is one of the last intact active blanket bog systems in Ireland and Western Europe and is an important scientific and scenic feature of the National Park. The Park also protects a variety of other important habitats and species. These include alpine heath, upland grassland, heath and lakes and river catchments. Greenland white-fronted geese, golden plover, red grouse and otters are just some of the important fauna found within the Park. The National Park is itself part of the Owenduff/ Nephin Complex Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Special Protection Area (SPA). These European designations are part of the Natura 2000 Network, which protect rare and important habitats and species under the EU Habitats and Birds Directiv.

Community Mayo Genealogy Group was established just over a year ago and a committee was formed last summer. I, Kathryn Murphy was elected P.R.O. for the Erris area and also secretary for the group. My role as secretary is to take the minutes of the meetings which are held every second Saturday of each month from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. At the meetings we discuss the agenda which is compiled by the Chairperson and when the meeting ends members help newcomers and others research websites relating to ancestry/genealogy etc. My role as P.R.O. combined with the business I run with my husband Pap Murphy, would like to invite all genealogists both local and further afield to come together here at Turas Siar, near Clogher Post Office, 11 miles outside Belmullet on the Blacksod Road for a genealogists gathering. Turas Siar is a language and culture research centre and we specialise in local history, archaeology, genealogy, local crafts, family gatherings, local placenames and their meanings. Keep an eye on Know your rights: Motorcycle driving test
Question I am aged 19 and I have a learner permit for a category A motorcycle. I hope to do my motorcycle driving test in the next few months. While I know there have been changes to driving licences, will I still be able to do the category A driving test? Answer No, you will not be able to sit the driving test for a category A motorcycle as the new minimum age to hold a category A driving licence since 19th January 2013 is 24. There is now a new A2 motorcycle category for those aged 18 and over, so you can sit the driving test for a category A2 driving licence instead. The type of motorcycle which you must bring to a category A2 test must be a minimum of 395cc cylinder capacity and engine power between 25kW and 35kW. If you wish, you can present your category A learner permit at the test. However, as your pre-January 2013 category A learner permit restricts you to riding a motorcycle of 25kW, you will have to bring a motorcycle of exactly 25kW to the test. If you pass your

driving test, you will be issued with a category A2 certificate of competency. Alternatively, you can apply for a new category A2 learner permit, which allows you to ride a motorcycle of up to 35kW. You can then bring a motorcycle of between 25kW and 35kW to the driving test. However, a new learner permit costs €35. Once you have passed the test and have a category A2 certificate of competency you can apply to your local Motor Taxation Office for a category A2 driving licence. Consultation: Review of Mobility Allowance and Motorised Transport Grant The Department of Health is holding a public consultation to guide consideration of a replacement solution or solutions for the transport and mobility needs which have been met by the Mobility Allowance and Motorised Transport Grant schemes. These two schemes have recently been closed by the Government, because the Ombudsman has found that they were not consistent with the Equal Status Acts.Any new solution will use the funds
currently spent on these two schemes to meet priority transport needs for people with disabilities, whatever their age. The purpose of the consultation is to hear the views of the widest possible number of people who have an interest in this and in particular the people who are currently in receipt of either the Mobility Allowance or the Motorised Transport Grant. All submissions must be made no later than 17:00 hours on Wednesday 17th April 2013. An on-line version of the form for submission will be available on this page in the coming days. All Welcome The Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring TD, will launch the new website of the Kilmore Triathlon Club at 8.30 p. m. on Thursday, April 11, in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel, Belmullet, Co. Mayo. The minister will also launch this year’s Blacksod Point Challenge triathlon, which will take place in September. The Kilmore Triathlon Club was formed in 2007 in order to promote the sport of triathlon in the Erris region, and their inaugural triathlon was held in 2008, which was a resounding success. The Blacksod Point Challenge triathlon is a National Series Race (sanctioned by Triathlon Ireland, the national governing body for the sport) and it takes place this year on Saturday, September 21. This Olympic distance race has become known as “an animal with teeth”, due to its test of endurance that pushes participants to their limits. Starting with a 1,500m swim in the Atlantic Ocean, followed by a fast 43km bike ride, the triathlon ends with an amazing 10km all-terrain run across the sand dunes of Fál Mór. Even though the race has become known as one of Ireland’s toughest and most gruelling triathlons, the spectacular views of the magical and mythical Erris peninsula has attracted hundreds of competitors to the area. Athletes have travelled from: New Zealand, Australia, the USA, Germany, Poland, Scotland, the UK and, of course, from all over Ireland. The Kilmore Triathlon Club is not driven by profit - any money raised is put back into making the competitors feel welcome and appreciated. The Blacksod Point Challenge is the last National Series triathlon on the national race calendar, so the Barony of Erris is a fantastic location in which to wrap up the triathletes’ season. In attracting competitors along with their families and friends – to the area, the event is a great opportunity to promote Erris as a quality leisure destination, and provides a massive boost to the local economy. Aside from drinking plenty of water each day, fill your sink with lukewarm or cool water and add a few drops of oil. Coconut oil and Almond Oil are great choices. Hold your breath and soak your face for as long as you can. Come up for air and keep soaking for about 3-5 minutes. Your skin loves to soak up water, and you probably know that after having a long bath your skin feels the most soft and smooth. Finish your soak by immediately applying a light, unscented facial moisturizer and either let your skin air-dry or gently pat dry with a towel. 4. Blot Excess Oil. If your skin is constantly oily and shiny, blot with oil absorbing sheets. There are many different brands and they all have one

The Grid West Project - EirGrid
has held a series of open days across the west on potential route corridors for the Grid West project, including days in Bangor Erris, Ballina, Swinford and Claremorris. The open days were only one of the channels through which the public could input on the Grid West project and EirGrid is now continuing to actively seek feedback and engagement from the public and communities in the west on the work that has been carried out to date on the project. Alan McHugh, the Grid West project manager, said that EirGrid was pleased with the level of interest shown by members of the public in the development of the project to date. “We have had very good attendances across the region. Even more importantly, we have seen a step change in the level of engagement from the public in relation to the potential corridors we have published. We welcome this early contact with individuals and communities across the region because we want as many people as possible to be fully aware of the project and to participate in the consultation process.“At this stage no decisions have been made and all information received from people living and working in the study area is very important as it can influence the next step in the project which is the identification of a preferred corridor for this new development. People can submit this feedback by post, email, calling the hotline or by dropping into the information centre in Castlebar.” The €240m Grid West project will develop a new high capacity power line linking the Bellacorick area in County Mayo to a strong point on the transmission grid at either Flagford in County Roscommon or Cashla in County Galway. By connecting the electricity generated by the region’s huge renewable energy resources, the project will facilitate significant job creation and investment as well as contributing to national recovery and growth. Grid West is part of EirGrid’s Grid25 plan to upgrade the national grid between now and 2025 to deliver a sustainable, competitive, and secure electricity supply to homes, businesses and industries. Exhibition Launch The launch of the exhibition by Geraldine O Reilly and Margo McNulty will take place in Áras Inis Gluaire on Saturday 13th April at 7pm. First Memory Clinic in Mayo A pilot Memory Clinic will commence service this Monday 4th February based at Ballina Primary Care Centre. The clinic is the first of the new services to be rolled out under the Community Action on Dementia in Mayo project launched in September 2012. “Our project combines philanthropic and state investment with the aim of bringing about a permanent improvement in services affecting over 1500 people with dementia in Mayo. We are trialling new ways of supporting people with dementia in the community. If successful the methods used could be introduced across the country, providing a better quality of life for those with dementia while making substantial savings for the exchequer.

If someone close to you has received a recent diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer disease or is currently awaiting a diagnosis then you can avail of the Dementia Advisor service ran by Fiona Hoban. This post is the first of its type in the country & aims to support and signpost those individuals dealing with dementia. Our project is breaking new ground because it is a pilot project and it’s creating a new language and dialogue around dementia.” Says project manager Frances Maloney. In the Memory Clinic you will meet our Memory Assessment Co-ordinator, Paula Frain who will assess individuals who are experiencing difficulty with their memory & will determine if these memory difficulties are part of the natural aging process or if they require further investigation.
It is envisaged that the Memory Clinic will service North Mayo in its first phase but will be rolled out to at least three other locations going forward.
