Keep an Eye on Lifestyle Sport can be a Key Player in Academic Success, improving Brain Function, Memory and Employability Being involved in

sports at college can greatly improve your academic success, by improving brain function, memory and even employability, according to the Union of Students in Ireland, who are urging students to get involved in exercise. Sports at college can improve your future by refining employer-friendly skills like teambuilding, communications, interpersonal skills and goal-setting. More training also means less drinking and less alcohol-related diseases, and endorphins are a great natural way to tackle stress and focus on studies. ?There are plenty of good reasons to be physically active at college. ? Kevin Donoghue, President of the Union of Students in Ireland, said, ?Apart from reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, lowering blood pressure and preventing depression by endorphins, exercise changes the brain in ways that protect memory and thinking. Studies suggest that parts of the brain which control memory and thinking (the prefrontal cortex and medial temporal cortex) have greater volume in people who exercise, versus people who don?t. ? ?Engaging in a program of regular exercise of moderate intensity over six months or a year is associated with an increase in the volume of selected brain regions, ? said Dr. Scott McGinnis, a neurologist at Brigham and Women?s Hospital and an instructor in neurology at Harvard Medical School. 26.5% of Irish girls and 16% of Irish boys under the age of 20 are classed as overweight or obese. The European average is 24.2%. ?Being involved in sport can not only improve your physical well-being but it can also have a positive impact on your mental health. ? Ursula Jacob, who works in the Sport Department at Waterford IT and is an All Star camogie player, ?Taking time out from your study to train or play sport can release positive endorphins and allows you to de-stress from your studies. Along with that, it encourages positive interactions with your peers while also allowing you to communicate and engage with a wide variety of people. This can have a knock on effect; not only on your daily life but also it can help you with your career path because many businesses and corporations recognise the important presence sport and physical activity can have in people?s lives. Furthermore, the presence of participating in sport and physical activity particularly in 3rd level Institutions ensures that these students are not actively engaging in continuous alcohol related activities. This is mainly due to the fact that these students are committed and dedicated to their training and recognise the importance of getting a healthy balance between their studies and sport rather than spending all their free time consuming alcohol. ? The top ten most popular Irish sports, according to GoIreland, are Gaelic, hurling, rugby, soccer, golf, horse racing, showjumping, camogie, boxing and greyhound racing. USI is the national representative body for the 354,000 students in third level education on the Island of Ireland. Raising of Green Flag.

Friday 9th October was an exciting day for St. Brendan?s College Belmullet as they raised their first Green Flag for Litter and Waste as part of the Green Schools Programme. This programme makes environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of the school. In 2013 the school was awarded a National title for a Neat Streets Anti-litter and Waste Campaign run by An Taisce. The Green Schools Committee and our TY students work closely with Belmullet Tidy Towns Committee and are involved in regular clean ups of various public areas and amenities in the town. The school was represented at the Mayo County Coast Boast Awards ceremony won by Belmullet Tidy Towns for their participation in the event. The flag was raised by Mrs. Eva Reilly, Belmullet Tidy Towns Committee In memory of her late husband Noel. He was a great support to our school in developing links with the local Tidy Towns and our Green School?s Initiative. The late James Snee of St. Brendan?s College was also remembered for his contribution to the Green School?s programme.

Bangor Reunion 2016 The Bangor Area Reunion

dates have been confirmed from 29th July until 5th August inclusive. Ideas are always welcome. Sponsorship or funding of any sort would be most welcome. At present we are fundraising to help us provide as much entertainment as possible during reunion week. To date we have had 5 fundraisers. These included a night of social dancing in the Talk of the Town, a table quiz in the West End Bar, take your pick night in the Kiltane Tavern, a duck race on the Abhainn Mh贸r and more recently a Halloween hooley in Bangor Hall. All events were well supported and we are delighted with the ongoing support and encouragement from the local community. Our next 2 fundraisers will be an entertaining football match on St. Stephen's Day in Bangor between teams chosen locally by men who don't necessarily have a lot of football experience... but they have spirit and heart and that's waht's important. No great football required, no birth certs needed! Then on St. Stephen's night we have the rodeo bull in the Talk of the Town. It's a repeat for the bull. He was last here 8 years ago. If you want to sponsor a rider for the bull, contact any committee member. Cost per cowboy/girl is ?20. There will be a sponsored King and Queen of the of Bull competition on the night. We are currently searching for old photos/memorabilia/newspaper clippings/video footage or anything else that might be associated with Bangor long ago, with a view to publishing a Bangor Reunion book. Our programme of events has yet to be finalised but we are confident that the final programme will contain something for everyone. Watch this space during 2016 for updates. ?More than a third of students regularly feeling down is an alarming percentage.? Kevin Donoghue, Union of Students in Ireland president, said ?It shows the fragility of the mind when it?s faced with multiple strains such as exam and financial stresses. We are urging students to talk about their problems, anxieties or strains to someone. People should be conscious of how they react to their friends?mental health, because belittling the problem is extremely damaging to those suffering from anxiety or depression, as the statistics show.? 20% of students said the worst thing someone can say to them when they?re feeling down is ?man up!? while 18.3% of students said ?cheer up!? is the worst. ?393 young people under the age of 30 committed suicide last year.? Donoghue said, ?43% of students said the worst part of feeling down is feeling isolated and hopeless with low self-esteem. We want to change these feelings. The Chats for Change campaign aims to change the stigma around mental health and encourage anyone feeling down to get into the habit of talking about it.? Kevin Donoghue ? Let the Children Lead the Way ? The Marine Harvest to feed the planet!!

The global population exceeded 7.15 Billion in the early months of 2015 and the population is predicted to continue to grow reaching 9.6 billion by 2050, and over 11 billion by 2100. Many experts forecast that the planet Earth will not be able to feed our growing population as the world simply will not have enough arable land to supply the necessary resources to feed the inhabitants. Our planet is only 30% land mass, the rest, the vast majority, is ocean, and we know more about the surface of Mars than we know about this vast blue world. In truth we have just begun to understand the great resources that the world?s oceans possess and we need to sustainably use the resources of the seas and that of the land to meet future food needs. Education is the key to make this a reality therefore we are embarking on a bio-marine science educational pilot, with four secondary schools and eight primary schools in Mayo, to develop an understanding of bio-marine science. The seas and oceans will need to provide food and water to all species on the planet, the key to making this a reality is through education, we need to educate our young, our next generation, so they can carry this important mission forward. The great Greek philosopher, Socrates, said that ?Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel. ? The new ethos in adult education seems to follow Socrates?belief that education is about creating a passion for learning and understanding the world around us. In our young people in Ireland we have a great resource. We should encourage them to examine the world they live in and to create a future where they understand the world and live in harmony with nature. As an island nation, surrounded by clear pristine waters we have an exceptional opportunity to light the flame of knowledge in the generations to come in marine sciences. Our marine science educational pilot will inspire young people to become passionate about marine science so they can realise the importance of the great abundance of life in the sea that surrounds this island. This marine science pilot is being followed by European partners/agencies involved in education and the marine sciences, and collectively we are campaigning to get marine sciences onto the national education curriculums at primary and secondary level across Europe. With Mayo leading the way, we are leading a pan-European initiative, opening education pathways into marine sciences to pupils in the primary and secondary sector, leading to employment and education opportunities within marine sciences. In the new-year we will be continuing to engage with the TY students in the four secondary schools and we will be visiting 8 national schools, engaging the pupils and developing awareness and interest in the marine environment. Our objective is that this pilot will lead to the national roll-out of the next stage of the pilot to include all schools, both coastal and urban, to establish marine science as a national curriculum subject at primary and secondary level in Ireland by 2020. We as a nation owe it to ourselves and to the next generation to make this a reality, so let us embrace this initiative and open young minds to the world of the bio-marine. Redrose Developments Ltd Please like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Redrose-Developments https://www.facebook.com/Wild-Atlantic-Seagarden All the staff at Redrose Developments Would like to wish A Happy and Peaceful Christmas And a New Year full of new promises and opportunities To all readers of Erris Eye.

With Christmas only weeks away now, it might be tempting to leave coming back to class until the new year! The problem is though that in that space of time you could easily have gained half stone or more even! Think how good you would feel on Christmas day if you had that half stone lost instead. It's very possible. Try to commit to class each week from now til then. Remember I'm committed to you and I'm here for you whenever you need me. Classes continue right up to Christmas.

Erris IWA launched their Angel Campaign

A Me r r y Chr is t m a s t o o ur Cus t o m e r s

and the event was launched by one of their Sunshine Club members RoĂse Lavery Binghamstown, daughter of Melissa and John Lavery. The IWA wish to thank all their volunteers who helped sell our angel products and all who supported the campaign. Speaking about the Angels Campaign, Rosaleen Lally, IWA Angels Coordinator Mayo said: ?IWA?s Day Centre provides services and supports to people with physical disabilities living in towns and communities across Erris. The IWA Day Centre in Belmullet acts as a hub in the local community, a place where people can go to meet, get advice, seek support, learn new skills and socialise. Each week, I am involved in supporting local people with disabilities to take part in programmes, activities or social events that make such a difference to their lives. The ?2 donation IWA asks for once a year during the Angels Campaign really does go a long way. ? IWA is conscious that many of their supporters were not available to volunteer during the day due to work and family commitments and instead ask that they Text Donate. Donating by text takes seconds and is very simple. By texting ?ANGELS to 50300?you can make a direct contribution to the Association. Alternatively, IWA is asking local people to get involved by organising a coffee morning, raffle or bake sale for their family, friends, neighbours or colleagues to take part in. If you would like to support the Angels Campaign this year please contact Rosaleen Lally on 097 81728 or email rosaleen. lally@iwa.ie

Tá casadh ar an lagtrá i nGaeltacht Mhaigh Eo Thuaidh Ba mhaith leis an ngrúpa nua ainmnithe ?Gaeilge Iorrais?

buíochas ó chroí a ghlacadh leis an slua mór a d?fhreastail ar an gcruinniú poiblí a d?eagraigh siad Dé Céadaoin 4 Samhain 2015 in Áras Inis Gluaire, Béal an Mhuirthead. Tháinig os cionn 100 duine, idir óg agus aosta agus ó chuile cheard den limistéar chuig an gcruinniú tábhachtach seo. Rinne an Dr Laoise Ní Dhúda cur i láthair cuimsitheach a mhair 20 nóiméad maidir leis an bpróiseas pleanála teanga atá leagtha amach faoi Acht na Gaeltachta 2012. Labhair sí go soiléir maidir le himpleachtaí an achta seo do phobal Mhaigh Eo Thuaidh. Mhínigh sí cúlra agus cur chuige an ghrúpa nuabhunaithe ?Gaeilge Iorrais?chomh maith. Lean an plé oscailte ar feadh breis agus uair a chloig ina dhiaidh sin. Thacaigh gach duine le ?Gaeilge Iorrais?ar an oíche. Is iad aidhmeanna ?Gaeilge Iorrais?(i) tabhairt faoin réamhobair pleanála teanga i gceantar Mhaigh Eo Thuaidh (ii) Gaeltacht Mhaigh Eo Thuaidh a chothú agus a fhorbairt ar bhonn rannpháirtíoch (iii) an Ghaeilge a choinneáil beo sa limistéar agus (iv) ár stádas Gaeltachta a choinneáil faoi Acht na Gaeltachta 2012. Le bunú ?Gaeilge Iorrais?agus don chéad uair i stair na Gaeltachta fairsinge seo, tá rannpháirtíocht leathan agus comhoibriú éifeachtach ar bun idir eagraíochtaí agus paróistí éagsúla an limistéir ar mhaithe le cúrsaí pleanála teanga. Tá tús iontach curtha leis an obair seo anois agus tá súil ag ?Gaeilge Iorrais?go leanfaidh rannpháirtíocht agus tacaíocht an phobail mar chuid lárnach den phróiseas dúshlánach seo. Táimid dearfach, má oibríonn muid le chéile, go mbeidh dea-thoradh ar ár n-iarrachtaí. Is féidir linn an t-uafás a bhaint amach má sheasann muid le chéile. Tá ?Gaeilge Iorrais?ag ropadh ar aghaidh leis an obair agus ag réiteach iarratais le bheith mar cheanneagraíocht pleanála teanga sa limistéar seo anois. Beidh níos mó eolais i mí Eanáir 2016 nuair a fhógrófar torthaí an chomórtais sin. s féidir ríomhphost a sheoladh chuig gaeilgeiniorras@gmail.com chun breis eolais a fháil nó chun clárú le fóram ?Gaeilge Iorrais?. (Grianghraf faoi iamh) The tide is turning in the North Mayo Gaeltacht ?Gaeilge Iorrais?would like to say a sincere míle buíochas to the huge crowd which attended the public meeting they organised on Wednesday 4th November 2015 in Áras Inis Gluaire, Béal an Mhuirthead. Over 100 people, both young and old and from every corner of the North Mayo Gaeltacht attended this important event. Dr Laoise Ní Dhúda gave an informative presentation lasting 20 minutes regarding the language planning process as outlined in Acht na Gaeltachta 2012. She clearly set out the implications of this act for the people of the North Mayo Gaeltacht. She also explained the background and approach of the newly formed group ?Gaeilge Iorrais. ?Open discussion continued for over an hour and a half after the presentation. All present supported Gaeilge Iorrais on the night. Gaeilge Iorrais?aims are as follows (i) to undertake preparatory language planning work in the North Mayo Gaeltacht (ii) to maintain and develop the North Mayo Gaeltacht as a thriving Gaeltacht area (iii) to keep Irish language alive in the region (iv) maintain Gaeltacht status in accordance with Acht na Gaeltachta 2012. With the founding of Gaeilge Iorrais and for the first time in the history of this extensive Gaeltacht, there is widespread participation and effective co-operation between organisations and parishes in the region. This work has begun in earnest and Gaeilge Iorrais hopes that community support and participation will continue as an integral part of this challenging process. We are certain that if we work together, we will see positive results. Is féidir linn an t-uafás a bhaint amach má sheasann muid le chéile. Gaeilge Iorrais are proceeding with their efforts and are currently compiling an application to become the lead language planning organisation in the region. More information will be available in January 2016 when the results of this competition are announced. Feel free to send us an email at gaeilgeiniorras@gmail.com for further information and also to register your support with our forum.

Keep an Eye on Local Business Erris is one of only three regions in County Mayo to provide a Care & Repair Service for the elderly in our community. We are extremely lucky to hold a Community Partnership with Age Action Ireland and be able to offer this service to those who need it. Our team of volunteers at the Erris Care & Repair Service have had a very busy year helping older people in our community with odd jobs around the home and garden and providing companionship to people living alone. It?s not just at Christmas time that people can feel lonely. Every day can feel long and frustrating if you are at home and unable to get out or do all the things you used to be able to do for yourself. Throughout the summer, our team were busy cutting, trimming, weeding and tidying gardens, patching up paintwork, fixing leaks, clearing gutters, washing windows and changing light bulbs. These small things, that so many of us take for granted, can become very difficult in older age for people who have reduced mobility or live alone. In the winter months & in the lead up to Christmas, there may be odd jobs that need doing to make sure your home is winter ready. At your local Care & Repair Service, we have a team of volunteers who are on hand to call in and help out with these. From the simplest of things like changing light bulbs or checking your outdoor lighting to hanging curtains and fixing locks. Whatever it is you would like a hand with, we will do our best to help. All our volunteers are Garda vetted and carry Age Action Ireland ID cards with them so you can rest assured you are in safe hands. All Care & Repair calls are treated with strict confidentiality in line with Age Action policy. If you, or somebody you know, could do with a helping hand, please get in touch with Lorraine, Community Officer at Áras Inis Gluaire on 097 81079 and we will be happy to help. Or if you would like to become a volunteer on our team, do get in touch as we are always looking for new recruits. We would like to thank all our volunteers for their hard work and commitment throughout 2015 and we look forward to a busy start to the year ahead. And to all our clients in the region, have a safe and peaceful Christmas. Best wishes from all the Care & Repair Team and Staff at Áras Inis Gluaire. Merry Christmas!

Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Tรกnaiste Joan Burton pictured discussing the Comprehensive Employment Strategy with Anne Marie Healy of the Irish Association of Supported Employment at Farmleigh. ?We believe that over 100,000 additional people could be productively integrated with mainstream employment with valuable contributions to Ireland?s economy and enriching the social fabric of the workplace. The CES plays a vital role in making this a reality and we welcome clarity on overcoming the potential hurdles. The report is to be welcomed as another step towards normalising and building on the great work done by many organisations and government departments but without greater urgency in addressing these issues the lives of many people with disability will be left in limbo.? - IASE Chairperson Greg Barry
