Welcome to the ninth annual trinidad+tobago film festival! The trinidad+tobago film festival (ttff) is an annual celebration of films from and about Trinidad+Tobago, the Caribbean and its diaspora. The Festival screens more Caribbean films from more Caribbean countries than any other film festival. We also screen films curated from contemporary world cinema. As ever, the ttff presents a varied lineup of feature-, short and medium-length films—narrative, documentary and experimental— screening at venues on both islands. A number of these films will form the official competitive selection, with over TT$100,000 worth of awards to be won. This includes a new prize sponsored by Amnesty International, for the Caribbean feature film that best highlights a human rights issue. Also for the first time, the Festival will have a youth jury. This jury of teenagers and young adults will view a number of youththemed films in the ttff/14 lineup and select the film it deems to be the best. In addition to screening films, the ttff also seeks to facilitate the growth of the Caribbean film industry by hosting workshops, panel discussions, seminars and networking opportunities. A number of the industry initiatives this year are in anticipation of the tenth edition of the Festival in 2015, when we will launch the Caribbean Film Mart + Regional Film Database, with the financial contribution of the European Union (European Development Fund) and the assistance of the ACP Group of States. Finally, we would like to thank our sponsors, partners and especially our audience for their support, without which the ttff would not be possible. You keep us looking good!

IN AN EFFORT to stimulate interest in and a critical appreciation of independent film among young people, the ttff has joined forces with leading sponsor bpTT to establish a prize to be adjudicated by a youth jury at the ttff/14.

BC Pires

The bpTT Youth Jury Prize will be awarded to the best film as decided by a jury of five young people, ranging in ages from 16 to 21. Jurors were selected by an open call. To be considered for the jury, applicants had to submit an essay saying what their favourite film was, and why.

The five selected jurors will meet at the ttff/14. Under the guidance of Barbados-based Trinidadian film critic BC Pires, the jury will watch seven Caribbean and international feature-length fiction films that deal with themes and issues affecting young people.

For a list of the films in competition for the bpTT Youth Jury Prize, see the awards and juries section of the guide, on pages 12 + 13.

After the jury has viewed all the films in competition, it will choose the winning film. The director of this film will receive a trophy plus a cash award of TT$5,000, to be presented at the ttff/14 awards ceremony on Sunday 28 September at the Central Bank Auditorium.

FESTIVAL GUIDE

caribbean film mart + regional film database ACP partners’ meeting in Trinidad, June 2014

ttff/13 winner, caption ttff/13 awards

THE ttff is set to create a Caribbean Film Mart + Regional Film Database. The project is being made possible with the financial contribution of the European Union (European Development Fund) and the assistance of the ACP Group of States. Both projects will be launched next year, at the ttff/15.

THE REGIONAL FILM DATABASE The Regional Film Database is an online portal—a website that will gather available information on Caribbean films, filmmakers and industry professionals in one virtual location. Users can access content and information for sales, co-productions and distribution. The online database will, in the first instance, comprise independent feature-length films made in and about the Caribbean, and will act as a resource for filmmakers, producers, scholars and industry professionals. The database will be accessible in English, Spanish and French.

THE CARIBBEAN FILM MART The Caribbean Film Mart will bring together ten regional filmmakers with projects in development. These filmmakers will be given the opportunity to meet with 30 international film financiers, distributors, broadcasters, sales agencies, producers, film festival programmers, public relations consultants, film journalists and critics— all with the aim of creating professional relationships and partnerships that will enable the production and distribution of the ten participating projects. At the end of the Caribbean Film Mart, one project will be awarded a cash prize. The call for submissions will be made in early 2015. The Caribbean Film Mart + Regional Film Database are being implemented in association with the Fundación Global Democracia y Dessarollo from the Dominican Republic, the Association for the Development of Art Cinema and Practice in Guadeloupe, the Foundation of New Latin American Cinema and the Festival Régional et International du Cinéma de Guadeloupe. These partners have continuously demonstrated their commitment to the development of the regional film industry and their contributions will be critical to the success and sustainability of both the Caribbean Film Mart and the Regional Film Database.

10

16–30 september

The impact of these initiatives on the Caribbean film sector is anticipated to be substantial. By creating networking opportunities for Caribbean filmmakers with international film industry stakeholders, the ttff will help competitive businesses to start and grow, promote entrepreneurship and innovation through independent local film productions, and allow greater visibility and opportunities in the global film industry through increased production and access to international markets. The Caribbean Film Mart will present enhanced opportunities for Caribbean filmmakers to learn, connect and develop in their chosen profession and contribute to the success of the Caribbean film industry as major players on the international film scene. The connections made during the Caribbean Film Mart with internationally-recognised industry film professionals can add value beyond quantitative analysis, as many of these relationships grow over time and become fruitful collaborations, thus feeding the growth of the film industry and the possibilities and potential opportunities for our filmmakers. The Regional Film Database will be designed to provide a platform for ongoing dialogue between filmmakers and film sector professionals such as film commissioners, festivals, funders and within the Caribbean Women in Film section of the website. It will allow culture sector professionals access to information regarding productions, knowledge interchange and resource gathering which will nurture collaboration in the region and enable the capacity of film professionals through access to experts in their relative fields. This level of interchange will help build the capacity of the film industry and a skills-training exchange will begin to occur within the region. The creation of both a physical space as well as a virtual space will help regional film industry professionals to share resources, and help secure sales and distribution for Caribbean films/makers. The best practice for the dissemination and promotion of Caribbean film will be utilised: communicating with audiences and filmmakers through partner websites and social networks. The Regional Film Database will further provide policymakers with concrete data on local cultural products that have been developed, financed and produced, not solely through local funding and support, but also by regional and international coproductions, financiers and film crews to further encourage, facilitate and improve government support for the creation of feature films. The project can also directly enhance opportunities towards strengthening and making actionable Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) through participatory efforts created by regional collaboration. Finally, there is a significant expectation that as a direct result of the Caribbean Film Mart + Regional Film Database, more Caribbean films will be produced and exhibited, with regional audiences given more opportunities to see reflections of themselves and their stories on the screen. It is hoped that this will contribute towards a more educated, aware and objective society; one that can celebrate its history and heritage, critique its social and political misgivings and explore its collective creative identity.

opening night gala TUESDAY 16 SEPTEMBER Globe Cinema 6.00pm – Doors open (park and ride the shuttle from NAPA, 5–6.15pm) 6.30pm – Film screening: Pan! Our Music Odyssey Zen Nightclub 8.30pm – Reception 10.00pm – After-party (cash bar) Limited tickets are available for $150. Call 621.0709.

PAN! OUR MUSIC ODYSSEY

Director: Jérôme Guiot 2014, Trinidad+Tobago English, French and Japanese, with English subtitles Documentary feature  / 80 minutes / WORLD PREMIERE PAN! Our Music Odyssey is the story of the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, the only new acoustic musical instrument invented in the twentieth century. The film boldly dramatises the almost mythical invention of pan in the 1940s, and then surges forward to tell the stories of people from all over the world—T+T, France, Japan, the USA—who have staked everything on their love of the instrument, and whose passion and daring draw them each year to the “world championships” of steelband, Panorama. Written by Kim Johnson, T+T’s foremost pan writer and researcher, Pan! is interlaced with dramatic re-enactments of the rags-to-riches tale of the steelband movement, which was born into poverty and violence but climbed to the highest levels of social and artistic acceptance without losing its life-or-death urgency. The result is an extraordinary global human adventure, as rousing and life-affirming as any great pan symphony. The director, Jérôme Guiot, writer, Kim Johnson, and producers Barthélémy Fougea and Jean Michel Gibert will be present to introduce their film. Born in Belgium, Jérôme Guiot studied editing and directing at the National Institute of Radio Engineering and Cinematography (INRACI). He has directed several music videos for the Belgian pop artist Stromae, including “Alors on danse”, “Allez vous faire” and “Tous les mêmes”. He also directed the short film Retour simple (2009), and has directed web documentaries and commercials.

closing night film TUESDAY 30 SEPTEMBER MovieTowne, Port of Spain 6.30pm – Film screening: Cristo Rey

CRISTO REY

Director: Leticia Tonos Paniagua 2013, Dominican Republic, Haiti, France Spanish and Haitian, with English subtitles. Narrative feature  / 96 minutes  /  T+T PREMIERE JANVIER is a good-natured young man living in the town of Cristo Rey (Christ the Redeemer) in the Dominican Republic. The son of a Haitian mother and Dominican father, Janvier, like so many Haitian-Dominicans, is the constant target of casual discrimination and police harassment. After his mother is deported to Haiti, he is desperate to reunite with her in Port-au-Prince. Reluctantly he takes a job with a gang leader, El Bacá, as a bodyguard to Jocelyn, El Bacá’s sister. Soon the youngsters are in the grip of a clandestine love affair. As Janvier becomes more entwined with both Jocelyn and El Bacá, he is forced to make a difficult, dangerous decision. Inspired by Romeo and Juliet, Leticia Tonos Paniagua’s enthralling and energetic film updates Shakespeare’s play to a contemporary Caribbean setting, with a fresh, urgent take on the classic story that makes it feel as though it’s been ripped from the daily headlines. Leticia Tonos Paniagua will be present to introduce her film. Leticia Tonos Paniagua was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. She completed her studies at the London Film School, where her thesis was an adaptation of the Junot Díaz short story “Ysrael”. La hija natural (2010; ttff/11), her first feature, was the Dominican Republic’s entry to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. Cristo Rey (2013) is her most recent film.

Director: Miquel Galofré 2014, T+T English Documentary feature / 74 minutes WORLD PREMIERE

Director: Ernesto Daranas Serrano 2014, Cuba Spanish, with English subtitles Narrative feature / 100 minutes T+T PREMIERE

ART CONNECT vividly illustrates how creative intervention changed the lives of a group of young people in Laventille, a disenfranchised and volatile community in T+T. The film documents the profound impact that painting, poetry, music and dance had on the children, who were given digital cameras to record their experiences. By allowing the viewer intimate access to their world, they reveal their hopes and fears, and we witness their lives transform.

LIFE ISN’T EASY for 11-year-old Chala. When he isn’t getting into trouble at school for his violent behaviour, or with the police for raising fighting dogs, he has to contend with an alcoholic mother who spends her nights hustling in Havana’s nightclubs. Chala has one person on his side: his teacher, Carmela, who absolutely believes that no child is a lost cause. But when Carmela falls ill, Chala himself is in danger of falling through the cracks of an unforgiving system, in this heartfelt, clear-eyed drama.

BLANCO

COWS WEARING GLASSES

Director: Melvin Durán 2014, Dominican Republic Spanish, with English subtitles Documentary feature / 62 minutes T+T PREMIERE

Director: Alex Santiago Pérez 2014, Puerto Rico Spanish, with English subtitles Narrative feature / 93 minutes CARIBBEAN PREMIERE

BLANCO portrays the daily life and human side of six albinos of different ages and stages in life, who have more in common than just their physical condition. Uninformed about the symptoms related to albinism, these people live their lives with normalcy despite their unique appearance, visual impairment and the harmful effects of the sun on their skin. Shot with an often ethereal beauty, Blanco neither exploits nor patronises its subjects, instead presenting them as they are, with warmth and compassion.

MARCELINO is a celebrated painter and art teacher with a curmudgeonly reputation. On the verge of losing his sight and being squeezed to retire from the university, he reaches out to his only daughter, Isabel, a writer of self-help books. With his thoughts turning to his final end, Marso seeks forgiveness for abandoning his family decades ago. The wounds of the past prove difficult to heal, however, in this engaging and touchingly bittersweet comedy-drama.

HOTEL NUEVA ISLA

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES

Directors: Irene Gutiérrez Torres, Javier Labrador Deulofeu 2014, Cuba, Spain Spanish, with English subtitles Documentary feature / 71 minutes CARIBBEAN PREMIERE

Director: Rommel Hall 2014, Barbados English Narrative feature / 111 minutes T+T PREMIERE

THE FORMERLY LUXURIOUS Hotel Nueva Isla in Old Havana is now in ruins, but it is home to people living on the fringes of society, like the retired public servant Jorge. Abandoned by his wife and children, Jorge’s only motivation, like a Don Quixote forgotten and gone astray, is to continue a quest he’s followed for years: dig among the dangerous ruins of the hotel, where he is convinced that the former owners hid valuable objects before fleeing the Cuban Revolution.

BASED ON a popular television sitcom, Keeping up with the Joneses is centred around the Jones family: Irving Jones, his wife Angela, their daughter Tracy and son Nathan, who are stars in a reality show called Life & Times in the Caribbean. When the Joneses are kidnapped, all is thought to be lost. That is until Angela’s mentally ill brother, Anderson, and three friends from Green Meadows Mental Institution, go on a mission to save them.

Director: Brad Klein 2014, Jamaica English Documentary feature / 102 minutes T+T PREMIERE

Directors: Dan Sickles, Antonio Santini 2014, Puerto Rico English and Spanish, with English subtitles Documentary feature / 87 minutes CARIBBEAN PREMIERE

BEFORE REGGAE conquered the world, Jamaica gave us ska. This exciting and uplifting documentary tells the story of ska music in the words of the musicians themselves, from the rhythm-and-bluesinfluenced sound-system dances in Kingston in the 1950s to the classic ska period of the 1960s to the coming of reggae. The film is punctuated by performances from the 2002 “Legends of Ska” concert, and features interviews with Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Jimmy Cliff, Keith Richards and others.

THE TRANSGENDER community of Puerto Rico is as diverse as it is vibrant. A unique exploration of self-discovery and activism, Mala Mala features a cast of unforgettably colourful and vivacious subjects that includes LGBT advocates, business owners, sex workers and a group of drag performers who call themselves The Doll House. This is a passionate and winning documentary, one that portrays a fight for personal and community acceptance punctuated by discouraging lows and triumphant highs.

Directors: Tabaré Blanchard, Iván Herrera 2013, Dominican Republic Spanish, with English subtitles Documentary feature / 84 minutes T+T PREMIERE

Director: Karen Marks Mafundikwa 2014, Jamaica English Documentary feature / 83 minutes T+T PREMIERE

IN MAY 2011, history was made when the flag of the Dominican Republic crowned the world’s highest mountain, Mt Everest, marking the first Caribbean expedition to reach the mythical peak. That mission inspired three young Dominican boys, fishermen’s sons, who set out to conquer the highest mountain in their country, and the Caribbean: Pico Duarte. The Mountain unites both missions, intercutting one with the other. The result is an epic adventure, built on motivation, inspiration, determination and achievement.

WHEN QUEEN ELIZABETH II visited Jamaica in 2002, she was petitioned by a small group of Rastafari for slavery reparations. For Rastafari, reparations are linked to moving to Africa, from where their ancestors were brought as enslaved people. This timely, important film traces the Rastafarian petition and a reparations lawsuit against the Queen over a decade into both the British and Jamaican parliaments, while interweaving stories of earlier Rastas who pursued reparations in the 1960s.

Directors: Shakirah Bourne, Ricky Redman 2014, Barbados English Narrative feature / 90 minutes INTERNATIONAL PREMIERE

IN PERICO, Cuba, an Afro-Cuban community has kept alive songs and dances brought from West Africa via the slave trade almost two centuries ago. Through years of searching, filmmaker Emma Christopher tried to find the origins of these cultural artefacts. Then, in a remote village in Sierra Leone, people watching a recording of the Cubans’ songs and dances joyously declared “They are we!”, and joined in with the songs. “COLONIALISM IS...violence in its natural state, and it will only yield when confronted with greater violence.” So declared Frantz Fanon in his classic indictment of European imperialism, The Wretched of the Earth. This provocative film matches astounding file footage of the fight for decolonisation in Africa with selections of Fanon’s incendiary text, powerfully voiced by musician Lauryn Hill. The result is a bold, empowering visualisation of colonial (and neo-colonial) power and its dehumanising effects on the people who exist under its rule. SIMÓN BOLÍVAR (1783–1830) is arguably the greatest figure in the struggle for independence in the Americas. This sweeping, stirring epic—anchored by a star-making turn by Édgar Ramírez—tells the story of his life. THE LUNCHBOX

Director: Lacey Schwartz 2014, USA English Documentary feature / 65 minutes CARIBBEAN PREMIERE

Director: Ritesh Batra 2013, India Hindi and English, with English subtitles Narrative feature / 104 minutes T+T PREMIERE

AS A CHILD growing up in a Jewish family in upstate New York, Lacey Schwartz was always told that her relatively dark skin and curly hair were the result of a certain Sicilian ancestor. As a young woman, however, she began to pull back the curtain on matters of race and family secrets, as chronicled in this deeply personal and riveting documentary. The film raises larger questions: What factors make us who we are? And what happens when we are forced to redefine ourselves?

SAAJAN is a taciturn, middle-aged widower about to take early retirement. Ila is a young housewife caught in a loveless marriage. One day the lunchbox that Ila sends to her husband via Mumbai’s celebrated delivery system accidentally starts going to Saajan. Ila and Sajaan begin sending secret handwritten notes to one another via the lunchbox, until the day that they decide it is time for them to meet. Deftly avoiding trite sentimentality, this is an utterly charming and poignant romantic drama.
